I was given a Samsung Galaxy tab 8.9 LTE/sgh-i957 about a year ago for free and it has been pretty good. It is pretty slow compared to new tabs and I don't really need the LTE. My question is should I root it and run a custom ROM or just buy a Nook HD+ for $149.99? I can use hotspots on my phone from anywhere so the internet connection isn't an issue. I am just curious if I will even notice a speed increase on the sgh-i957 with a cleaner non-bloated ROM at it's age.
What version of android are you running now? If it's gingerbread you'll see a large change in performance if you go to ics. Cm10 and ics run about the same on my i957. I'm rooted.

To root do.the following:
Download twrp onto your computer http://d-h.st/dx3 Flash it in Odin, PDA
Download superSU-busybox on to your phone http://d-h.st/vjq. Flash that with twrp
You will be rooted. I've assumed you are familiar with Odin and flashing custom roms.

Familiar with rooting, Yes, have done it many times on many phones, current LG Optimus G is rooted. Familiar with Odin, No, this will be my first time using it, but I am a reader and will not do anything unless I am sure.

Best guide for Odin is in the i727 skyrocket development forum. There is a sticky by vincom that is a return to stock / Odin guide. Just follow it with the tab specific files. I'm on my mobile or I'd link you to it. Twrp, you flash just like you would a stock Rom. Pay attention to what what options are checked in Odin. You only want auto, reboot, never re-partition

Thanks, got it rooted and froze a bunch of apps but it is still pretty slow. I guess I will be upgrading because Magazines look amazing on the 1280p Nook HD+ display too.

Can someone point me to a Odin file with root and an Odin file containing a cwm. I keep seeing everyone talk about flashing with Odin for easy root but I can't seem to find one specifically for the sch-i800 (Verizon) tab.

Looked around a bit more and I still can't find anything. All I'm trying to do is root the tab and flash cm9 or aokp. All the root guides are unclear about the Verizon version of the tab and the ones that say anything about the Verizon tab all say use heimdall. I am not familiar with heimdall and would much prefer Odin for my Samsung rooting needs. I own the galaxy s, s2, and s3 and Odin has been my friend.

So if I use this link to get the CWM need All should be good? I mean i'm root using Odin and I can't recover anything, add custom rom cm9. It always freezes on me doing either. Should I go back to stock and redo this over again??
He has a verizon tab 7. That link is for the 7.7 model. Do not odin that, you'll brick the tab for sure.

This isn't working for me and I'm not sure why. Also, the captivate isn't showing that USB Debugging is connected, even though it's on and ADB via SuperOneClick and detect the phone. Drivers from samsung's webpage are installed as well.

It depends which firmware your Cappy is on.
Refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266 if you want to root and flash custom ROMs.

Depending on the firmware version, ExynosAbuse should do the trick (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297).
I got DVALI6 so would be safe? I dont want to end up with a dead phone.

Do a little more search then just asking laying on your back.
Anyway look for threads in the development section.. there is a few topics that would help you. The titles are self explainatory.
A little digging is good.. then you will learn in deapth and perhaps solv a few things your selfe.
Good luck

I did search but can't find one explaining how to do it via phone. Funny how people praise the search button and it barely helps.
Sent from my Galaxy S3 4G
Sorry.. dont want to be rude.
But if you read a little more in the forum you will ensure you dont destroy your phone soon.
The easy way then:
1: Buy mobile odin from play or find the creators xda thread and download for free
2: Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1914394
Download I9305_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5 to your phone.
3: run mobile odin from your phone.
In mobile odin, scroll down a bit and chose "Open file..." choose the sdcard you downloaded the file to. Now brows to the prev. downloaded file I9305_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5 and run. Dont check any boxes.
Done
But if you want to understand the deapth of the dangers you could encounter and prevent , check this thread from xda:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1967124
All links are from xda.

You can get mobile odin and flash either cwm, philz or twrp recovery with it. Just make sure you download the .tar file. Once that's done you will have a recovery you can flash zips in

Didn't mean to thank you. If you are on gingerbread then use Odin to flash a rooted kernel. Use chain fire's or overcome. Not sure if the links in the forum is still good but a Google search will help.

Just follow this instruction:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256439
It's the only way to do it if you are on JB rom. There were other easier way to do on GB and ICS, but they don't work on JB.
Keep in mind that since you are on JB, there is no way for you to use any GB or ICS rom. Not even if you install safestrap and custom roms.
When going through the process, make sure that you select the correct network device! I was on a laptop and it defaulted to my wired network even though I was on wifi.
I was planning to install liquid smooth 4.2.2 official . so I would have to downgrade? Since I can't install safe strap..?

My understanding is that you are on stock JB right now.
So stay on that. Go through root using the link I provided.
After you get root, install safestrap 3.11 (don't use newer version, they have problems).
then you can install any 4.1 or newer Android on the slots in safestrap.
Perfect!! Thanks!! I shall root and install safe trap. Thanks again for your help!!:thumbup::thumbup:
