what does these commands in mount & storage of cwm recovery do?
format cache (is it same as wipe cache?)
format system (is it same as factory reset in cwm?)
format data
format preload
format sd card
format emmc
does it hold significance to perform any of these operations during a full wipe for installing a new rom.
Some answers in here.

even thought its now called obsolete, I still perform those steps catered to my n7000. As posting suggest a bit overkill, but did prevent a load of issues cause installs are overkill clean.
At own risk of course and best from safe kernel. Id recommend it to everyone going from gb to ics, from ics to gb or even between customs roms.

format cache (is it same as wipe cache?)Yes.
format system (is it same as factory reset in cwm?)It will format your system partition. You will not be able to start your phone unless you flash a new rom
format dataThis will format your data. Same as Factory Reset)
format preloadI hope this is for preloaders which loads before starting the OS.
format sd cardThis will format your Internal SD Card
format emmcThis will format your External SD Card.
Wiping Cache/Dalvik/Data is required to perform a clean install of new rom. There is no need to use these commands unless you want a completely new phone without data (Including Internal/External SD Card).

unfortunately i realized that way too late, after formatting Sdcard (External card in my case). leaving me with a blank emmc (supposedly internal sdcard).
Hi,
I'm using a HTC one, which is rooted, s-on, unlocked. I'm also using maximus hd 13 rom.
I want to completely reset the content on the internal sd card. I already tried to format the card via cwm wipe and during aroma installer using full wipe. But afterwards my sd card is still not clean, all the stuff from before is still there.
How can I get rid of those sd card content?
thanks in advance,
Chris
Well I can tell you from experience that it's a lot easier than I thought it would be. I actually use TWRP and what I do is install the Rom I want...then format the sd card in recovery and reboot. It's that simple..at least for me. Now for cwm I think there's the option for to format sd..not just wipe..but I can't remember the setup off hand...I'm thinking the process would be exactly the same

Hi,
I've installed maximus 13 an hour ago, doing all wipes I found
I also use the factory reset in the android settings.
At the moment I'm looking for format options in cwm and I found the following in "mounts and storage menu":
- format /cache
- format /data
- format /sdcard
- format /system
- format /external_sd
- format /data and /data/media (/sdcard)
should I try these options? If yes, all of them? In which order?
I can't imagine that it could be so difficult to get your sd card clean

So I just recently installed cm10.2 onto my nook hd+, During the process while booted into CWM I selected the wipe data/factory reset, then installed cm10.2 onto EMMC. Problem is when I load cm10.2 it shows that 7gb of data is being used on a brand new load without any apps or videos. I've ran the storage management from a file manager and it only shows maybe 100mb being used. This tells me somewhere the stock OS with any apps/videos I had is still on the EMMC. Is there any way to delete this?

Did you have media files on stock? If so, doing a factory reset does not wipe the media files. You must go to CWM "mounts and storage" and format "data and datamedia" to get it completely wiped.

Never mind, I followed your instructions because I didn't have much to loose. For anyone with the same problem, I did have media on my stock os when I did a factory reset and that is why the new install didn't show all my storage available. Using the format data in CWM erased all of the left over media, it also erased all the apps and data I placed on my CM10.2 os. Still I only started loading apps so it won't take long to reinstall them.
You said you formatted 'data'. You need to format 'data and datamedia'.
And if you had done a nandroid backup first you could have saved the /data portion.

Question: I want to wipe everything from my HD+ and start completely fresh. What is safe to wipe and how do I do it in TWPR or CWM? A "factory reset" isn't good enough. It leaves old data around. But I've read too many stories about bricking a device by formatting /data using CWM.
Background: I've been running CM 10.2.1 for a few weeks now. Given what Jon Lee posted about Google and security, I thought I'd try a clean install of CM 10.2.1 without installing gapps, just to see what that's like. (And what services don't run.)
So I did the usual "factory reset" from TWRP and reinstalled CM 10.2.1. To my surprise, when I booted, the latest version of Google Play was still showing on the launcher!
I had used Link2SD to integrate the latest version of Google Play with the OEM system app. So apparently, that this was not wiped. And of course, internal media data is not wiped (not by TWRP, anyway) in a factory reset. But I thought /system was.
The TWRP FAQ has a page about wiping. It says
Depending on your device and its configuration, you may have options for wiping internal storage, external storage, sd-ext, android_secure, and/or an option for formatting data. There's almost no reason that you would ever need to use these items. These options are there for convenience. For instance, if you're getting ready to sell your device, then it's a good idea to wipe everything on the device so that the new owner doesn't get your private data.

But they don't tell you which to select.
TWRP makes it confusing by offering to 1) wipe data, 2) internal storage, 3) SDcard or 4) SDcard data in Advanced Wipe. Which is it for wiping your media stuff?
From what I've read, "internal storage" should be the same as "SDcard." So why both? And how is "SDcard data" distinct from those two?
To make matters worse, in the Nook I thought there was an additional element of confusion because the Nook doesn't call the internal SDcard memory what everyone else calls it.
So let's say I am selling my HD+. Would I select all of the above and still be able to install a ROM clean?
Or would I brick?
I know that on a desk top computer if you want to start bare metal, you format the hard drive, wiping everything, and install onto that. But judging from what Succulent wrote in his blog about recovering from an EMMC crash, you can't start totally clean with Android. Apparently, Android needs some preexisting files on the "drive" in order to install. (Like the devconf folder, which contains your MAC and your serial number.)
[Am I understanding him correctly? He was talking about recovering from a tablet wrecked by the EMMC brick bug. Perhaps no /data partition at all, as he offers a script to rebuild/expand that partition?]
I have read stories of people bricking their tablets by formatting /data from CWM. I don't understand why that should brick it. Why couldn't you boot into recovery? How can the /data partition affect the /recovery partition?
So - has anybody done a complete wipe on their Nook HD+? Please explain, for those of us who are obsessive compulsive, exactly how you do it.
To wipe your device with CWM go to mounts and storage and format /system, /cache and 'data and datamedia'. A normal factory reset only wipes /cache and the portion of /data that does not hold your media files. It does not wipe /system. Usually the ROM install does that, but the install script has a feature that saves gapps if you are installing the same version of the ROM (eg, CM11 over CM11). So to get rid of everything, including media files and gapps, do what I said in the first sentence. Of course after formatting /system you must put a ROM back on it for it to boot.
And it is not /data formatting that is the brick problem, it is formatting the /bootdata partition. They are different things. Don't format that.
And succulent was talking about /rom partition which is different yet that needs to be left alone. That is where the devconf folder is. It contains things you need to keep.
If you want to understand the partition structure of the HD/HD+ go to my HD/HD+ Tips thread linked in my signature and read item 16.
And please read my PM to you about removing those assert removal instructions from my dummies thread.

Thanks for the thorough answer. And explanations. I always find it easier to remember something when I understand the reason for it. So I didn't know before that the install scripts keep gapps.(But that's what I was deducing.)
I know to stay away from /rom and /boot. Hopefully, TWRP would not let one format those in their numerous choices for Advanced Wipe.
From what you've written before in one of your other threads, I know that you're not a fan of TWRP. So I still don't know what the similar commands are in TWRP for a total clean. But for now I can delete /system in TWRP and do the reinstall without gapps. When I'm ready for a total wipe, I'll revert to CWM.
Can we trade /factory for /swap?

Read it. (And made an image of my factory partition. And then moved it to my extSDcard for safer keeping.)
So, the Nook HD+ partition structure is a bit different from the stock Android partition stuff I had found on the web.
So, for those of us running a custom ROM, I presume the factory image doesn't do us much good anymore. Will the HD+ automagically restore after 8 failed boots?
If not (or even if it will), is there a way to take that 448MB in the /factory image partition and use them for, say, a /swap partition instead? I think an xda developer is doing something like this for the Galaxy Tab 2, where he's using some memory that Samsung uses for animations and uses them for ZRam instead. Since I've backed up the factory image, and since I already have your factory 2.0.2 ROM, I really don't need the image any more. Seems like wasted space.

You can play with the partitions all you want. Just don't ask me to help you fix it. You don't seem to heed my warnings anyway.
But other users be warned that factory partition has vital backup information there (it has more than just the factory zip there) and if you lose it, your device is as good as a paperweight. That is why I recommended all users back that partition up. Not for the factory zip, but for the backup files there. The device has other safety backup routines other than just restoring the stock ROM. An example is, I told you and succulent told you that devconf has vital files all ROMs need in /rom. Well, /factory has a backup of /rom there and if the device discovers /rom is messed up, it tries to repair itself. No /factory and no repair. Paperweight!

Thanks for the quick response.
I am sorry that I seem to have gotten on your bad side. I did what you asked and moved my previous comment out of your thread. And I warned everyone that you don't think it's a good procedure.
And I did heed your warning. I made a backup of the factory partition and even moved the copy to my ext SD card for safer keeping. Especially since we were talking about wiping the sdcard. (Unless you're trying to say that storing the /factory img on the ext SD card is a bad idea because I won't be able to get it back to the internal SDcard if/when I need it.)
As for the devconf files, they're in the /rom partition. I don't understand how using the /factory partition for a /swap is going to ruin the /rom partition.
From what you're saying, the HD+ still has a "safety routine" built in, even when running custom recovery and a custom ROM? Does that mean that its safety routine is hard coded somewhere? Or part of the /rom code itself? How does the HD+ know to look in /factory when its running a non-factory OS? Does CM tell it to do that?
You're the expert. I'm just guessing here. If the /factory partition were used as a /swap, and if the system turned into a paperweight because it needed the /factory image later someday, then couldn't one go into recovery and copy the /factory partition back over, per your instructions? As a minimum, couldn't one use succulent's emmc recovery procedure to get back to factory status?
I'd be willing to trade that off for more performance.
How does one know when the HD+ goes into this safety routine? Does it tell you? Or is it transparent to the user? It would be interesting to know how often that happens. Does the safety routine then repair the /rom partition once booted if it detects a problem in /rom?

If you want to know more how the automatic repairs work, go to my Nook Color Tips thread linked in my signature and read item A12. The partition numbers are different but the repair process works exactly the same way on the HD/HD+, including the need for stock recovery to be installed. There are two ways to get your device automatically repaired if you have CM and CWM/TWRP recovery installed on internal memory. One is to flash stock recovery back per my item 5 in my HD/HD+ CWM thread, and the second is to flash the plain stock zip from item 6 there. That puts stock recovery back. Then it can repair /rom if need be.
And there is no real drawback of removing the factory.zip file from /factory partition since it is basically the same as a plain stock zip I have published. But the other files there are vital and should not be touched.
You got on my bad side by publishing that assert removal procedure on the help forum after I asked you to remove it from my thread. I don't want to make it easy for any user to do that as I consider it dangerous for noobs to do. See my response to your posting of that procedure.

As I recall, I did not say the person that removed the assert was an idiot, it was the person who recommended it that I said was an idiot. The user was a noob and knew no better. He was trying to flash a Nook Tablet ROM to his Nook Color and the assert kept failing (doing what it was designed to do). The idiot was the one that told him just to remove the assert. He did that and bricked his Nook Color.

I got nook hd+ and used cm version 10.2 something for a while.
The device keeps crashing and restarting like crazy.
1 out of 10 times, it launches, but before I do anything, it crashes. Hell.
It has been crashing and restarting quite often these days, but since last night, all it does is crashing and restarting.
To make matters worse, I tried to format the device and install cm again. It did not work.
I made booting SD card and chose 'wipe data/ factory reset'. And nook said it wiped /data /cache data wipe complete etc. However, files were still there in internal storage.
On top of that, I had to try 4 times to install newest cm-11. It aborted.
Next, I tried to installnookjdplus factory2.2.0 . It had error. (status 6) to ne specific.
So, I tried newest cwm recovery. It installed, but nook still crashed.
I persevered and tried to install cm 11. It installed, but still crash and restart.
Hell. I literally spent whole day doing this. I am confused and frustrated and angry and experiencing a few other negative emotions English language dows not have in words.
Please, some advice.

CM10.x, CM11, and stock ROM need different versions of CWM recovery.
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2679899 for info/pointers on flashing CM11.
To go back to stock ROM, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613(item #6).
When switching between CM10, CM11, and stock ROM, you need to do "wipe /data & factory reset".
If none of the above helps the your problem might be due to an unruly app or hardware related.

Ok. At least I got my biggest problem now.
I think my roblem is wipe data/factory reset does not do job it is supposed to do.
I still see folders and files in internal memory after factory reset. I think that is why install aborts and crashes even after successful install.
I think my problem is that wipe data/factory reset does not do its job
It gives me message it is formatting data cache and stuff. And last day they gave me data wipe complete. But the problem is, in internal memory, I can still see old folders and old files.
I think he should be gone if it is formatted. Where do I get the meaning of factory reset wrong?
Its not what is wrong with me. And how can I make factory reset work
And second question is that I tried to install B&N original operating system from cwm-based recovery. I tried a few different versions of
nookHDplus-factory-2.1.1-plain-stock.zip
However it always fail to install. Install aborted for some reason.
Thanks. It seem helpful.

You can get v6036 on that same thread digimax referenced above (my CWM thread linked in my signature). And a data wipe does not wipe your media files. To do that, go to mounts and storage and select wipe "data and datamedia".

thanks

trying it. hope it works.
did not work
for about deleting internal data, I went to 'mounts and storage'. used 'format /sdcard' and 'format/ data and/ data/media (/sdcard), but still has stuff in internal memory.
and to my surprise , I have been using CWM-6028. so far. I thought its name was 'NookHDplus-bootable'.
hell. stupid me.
Anyhow, CWM-6028 has been giving me troule
so, I would try other versions.
So far, I have done
1. made boot sd by burning image.
2. copy 'NookHDplus-factory-2.1.0-plain-stock' files and other versions.
3. Insert SD in device and boot CWM.
4. choose zip from sdcard.
5. install factory plain stock.
then I get message 'Failed to retouch 'system/lib/libemoji.so' (WTF is libemoji? and it is always this same file.)
E: error in sdard/nookHDplus-factort-2.2.1-plain-stock.zip(status7)
Installation aborted.
hell. And I tried every factory zip.
Am I doing something wrong?
Failed tp retouch '/system/lib/libemoji' is error message I get
Everytime I tried to install factory stock.
I tried every version of stock files. And I tried all CWM. And even tried TWRP, but it is always the same message what the hell is that emoji?
And what can I do with it?
What frustrates me the most is the fact that it installed 99% in a minute without trouble and stays there 410 minutes until it fails to install. It's driving me crazy
Does CM makes Factory reset by power button and home button does not work either.
Because I am getting message factory reset failed.
If CM is not the reason for it, well, something is wrong. Very wrong.
I am suspecting Internal memory corrupted lr something.
I should seriously consider throwing it away now.

It is possible you have a bricked emmc. When bricked it looks like it is writing but is really read only and nothing takes. If you still have media files after a successful format data and datamedia then it is bricked. Probably best to get rid of it. You can buy a refurbished unit very cheaply these days.

Assuming that your EMMC is shot, you can try running off SD card this no-emmc version of CM11 ROM: https://iamafanof.wordpress.com/201...-4-4-4-for-bricked-no-emmc-nook-hd-04nov2014/. It's best to use a card with fast randomized block read/write (which is what Class 4 cards are typically best at).
Thanks guys. By the way, what is emmc?
Is it part of CM software?
Does not sounds like hardware.
If I had factory resetted a day earlier, I would not have had problems.
Well. That is the way it is.
I finally kind of got nook working. I am running it on SD card now.
I got to thank you guys for your good advices.
Problem is that this ecmm free booting shrinks storage space.
No matter what is size of SD card, Internal storage is 900mb and SD card got 100mb. (I mean virtual Internal storage the file made in SD card) Not enough space to hold a movie.
I am happier to have tab working, but also wish to use full space of my SD.
At least I wish I can have a few Gs of storage.

Right after burning the ROM image to SDcard, it should be possible to use a disk partitioning tool such as MiniTool Partition Wizard to examine the SDcard ROM image's partitions and resize the /data partition to fill up the un-allocated space.

See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49007593&postcount=84 for some pointers on how to create a CM SD card with customized partition sizing for HD+. Although it was written for CM11, you should be able to adapt it for CM10.2 by using the appropriate ROM and GApps zip files corresponding to CM10.2.
Please confirm if my problem has any other solution
my NOOK HD+ I have CMW 10.2.1 with 6.0.4.6 recovery. Nook went to loop while booting. Now I can go to recovery and able to boot SD recovery CMW 6.0.2.8. But issue is:-
1. For any update even for Stock ROM it gives status 7 error.
2. With system recovery 6.0.4.6 when I try factory reset the TAB reboot same happen when i try to format DATA. While factory reset and DATA format happens with 6.0.2.8 position remains same.
3. When I try to make backup on internal storage both with 6.0.4.6 (TAB recovery) or 6.0.2.8 (From SD card) it makes boot, recovery and system image but give error as failed to backup /DATA.
4. I have done every thing right from various and latest ROM's ( error Status 7), Formatting boot, system but 6.0.4.6 on NOOK is intact and is in loop.
Please tell How I can over come this STATUS 7 error or DATA backup error.
thanks.

Does it boot-loop to recovery?
If so, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55582281&postcount=1459 for potential causes and solutions.

CWM v6.0.4.6 is not compatible with CM10.x, you need to flash back to the CWM version you previously used.
