Wifi Tethering (T-Mobile) - Nexus 4 General

I know most of us have rooted roms and tethering is not a problem but just in case you dont want to circumvent the system T-Mobile now has free tethering with unlimited data plans. At least thats what they told me yesterday and added to my regular No-Contract acct. Call them up and check it out or sign up online and see. I was told its a feature that was just added on for them this month. My boy added it to his Iphone so I know it does work...
Hope it helps someone.... If this is old info my bad:good:

they include 500mb tethering in their plan. more than that, you need to pay. 500mb isnt much.

I know that my statement is that unlimited data vets you free tethering...at least it did for me.. Just an FYI to others call and check

Not sure how else to say this but here we go. Yesterday while in the T- Mobile store the rep I formed me of a recent change. Anyone with unlimited internet can now get tethering for free.... Unlimited tethering and not the first 509 as stated on the web by T-Mobile. I am not a rookie and was simply passing this on .Now if you have asked a rep today and they told you different then fine. But if your statements are based on anything prior to today ease refrain til you ask. Now I am simply posting as said prior as an FYI.... If I am wrong and it slows down after then my info was incorrect but until then I am going with what I was told... Again just trying to help I am on vacation now but will check my acct later and post screenshots if applicable

Yes you get 500mb of tethering but there are questions as to T-mobile can truly track it since the Nexus 4 does not switch APNs when tethering like other phones do

There IS a recent change in the fine print language that indeed allows 500MB of tethering on 'Unlimited' data accounts, and I believe this is what the rep was referring to, whether intentional or not. It likely will never be 'unlimited tether' due to the fact of network restraints, and they have repeatedly indicated they do NOT want to be anyone's ISP for home-based bandwidth. Widespread 'unlimited tether' would bring this network to its knees in mere days. Please consider that this rep wasn't completely knowledgeable/forthcoming.

Welp, I did some quick google-digging, and DID come up with an interesting change in terms on all plans BUT the Unlimited Nationwide 4G, which still maintains the 500MB limit:
http://deals.t-mobile.com/unlimited-4g-data-no-contract
This page indicates all other 'Unlimited' data plans (no UN4G) can tether to their full rate...and fall back to 2G when the bucket empties. I'm happy to be wrong, playya! LOL!
EDIT:
Aw man: again misleading..the fine print:
"Smartphone Mobile Hotspot: (Tethering/Wi-Fi Sharing): Qualifying plan required. Plan data allotment applies.; Unlimited 4G data plan includes 500 MB of tethering. No roaming. Use of connected devices subject to T-Mobile Terms and Conditions."
This statement can be read several ways, naturally...TMO really needs to step up and simplify this silly language.

Gotcha...correct info is more important than right/wrong. I just recall several months back a thread where users were bemoaning paying for Unlimited Nationwide 4G and not getting ANY tethering...even when they wished to pay extra for it...it simply wasn't offered (assumed too abusive to the network). Even I was shocked they changed and allowed 500MB on that UN4G plan. Cheers!

I have the $30 pre paid 5 gig plan and you can add tethering for $15 a month. I have used it though with apps just during power outages. I never had an issue but I don't come close to using the 5 gigs anyways.

I just added it to my plan. I chatted with them first to confirm that it could later be canceled without affecting the basic plan. They prorated the first monthly fee because I'm already in middle of the billing period.
It annoys me that they make it so hard to find exact terms and conditions. At the moment, the blurb on the signup page doesn't say anything about limiting the high speeds to the first 500 MB, just says "Plan data allotment applies." The allotment is first 5 GB at up to 4G speed; time will tell if I get that with other connected devices.
How would they even know (sorry if that's an ignorant question)? Truth be told, I've been tethering all afternoon since my DSL went down. I decided to make it "official" when I found out it could take a couple of days to get my regular DSL back up again, but I didn't have any problems throughout the afternoon tethering a laptop and a tablet. Other than suddenly seeing a surge of use, how would they know I have tethered devices?

They randomly check user agent strings. I started getting the warning texts a few months ago (was on value unlimited which doesn't have a tethering allotment) and then they blocked me from accessing Internet Explorer from my laptop via mobile hotspot (but could still use Chrome or my iPad). One phone called they switched me to Simple Choice and kept my contract term so I didn't have to pay a migration fee.

I just switched to unlimited 4g a few weeks ago and I've occasionally gotten rerouted to a page that says I don't have tethering or I've reached my data limit. Disabling tethering and reloading the page works to bypass the page I'm using native android tether, and that's the only problem I've seen so far.

Neither do I but Amazon stated they can slap me with a $250 fee if I don't keep the phone for 180 days so I didn't want to do it.
They won't know if your just swap your SIM out into a new phone. But.. I dunno if it would work due to Apple just being different

Wow, iCrap is really wrapping things tight. I switched from my blackberry to the captivate and nothing had to change. In fact I still have the BB Personal Unlimited w/texting on my plan today and have even made changes (like killing visual voice mail) and have not had issues or questions. (and yes my account now shows the captivate, they picked it up after the first day of use and changed the phone listed on my account) I'm not saying the iPhone isn't diff, it just kills me that they have to be such pricks about their crap.

I have a feeling they're going to screw some people over with this, myself included. Before I switched to the TB I paid for hotspot on my DX. Now that I'm on the TB it no longer shows up in my features, and I bet they will switch to tiered data before the 15th. Forcing me to change my plan to re-add tethering and go to tiered data. Pretty much defeating the whole purpose of why I bit the bullet and threw down $700 to get this phone and be on unlimited 4G before they did away with it.

It's a free promotion and it says it when you use the hotspot. They can't charge you or sign you up for something during a free promotion. When I spoke to Verizon they said it will be some kind of notification (they don't know what yet) sent out that the promotion is over. I tried to opt out before the end of the promotion and both reps couldn't find a way because they didn't have anything to opt me out except a note on my account.

it's the people doing this that are the reason this tiered data crap is happening in the first place. I pay for things I use, especially with all the attention illegal tethering is getting now.

Whatever you had on your plan should carry over, Tethering and all.

If we were to add the tethering on to your account you will c the charge....it will not show the soc for tethering until after the promotion is over next month. So you are correct by saying the tethering did not roll over because as far as your billing is concerned it did not roll over because it's a different soc than ur 3g hotspots....if u choose to keep or "add" tethering it will not effect your unlimited data so no worries

ah ok. Couldn't help but be paranoid about it, after what AT&T did when they went tiered last year, although they didn't offer tethering before then for the iPhone, but if you wanted tethering when they added it you had to give up unlimited data.

I always felt it was more people like you as too why people like us have to find a way to get our phones tethering the way we want it and deserve it: FREE.
The majority allow Big Red and AT&T to tell us this is how it will be pay it or don't have it. And people complain about it but still shell out the money to these companies. If more people stood together we'd get things change. Lest that's how it used to be. Now most are too busy bending over to the companies to stand up to them.

WRONG do you remember when Verizon rolled out 3g data service back in the day and it was tiered at first as well? It was long before there were apps for tethering and before a majority of people even knew what tethering was. It's their way of making more money.

Eh you are stretching it there...yeah they had "tiers" but there was always an unlimited data option and lower options, like there are now. With the new tiered plans there won't be an unlimited data anymore...it will be how ATT is currently charging for their data.

Sprint did good - Non-HTC Related

I just called Sprint because my mom uses an LG Optimus S™
She consumes about 5-6 mb of data per month, but since it's a "smartphone" she has to get charged the $10 fee.
Well, I called in after having been with the phone for a couple of months and asked (Not told) if I had to pay for the fee since she only consumes about 5-6mb of data and doesn't really utilize the phone to its capabilities.
After putting me on hold of a min or two, she came back and told me that they evaluated her account and data consumption and will issue a $10 credit monthly to cover that.
I was reminded a couple of times that I should be paying for it because of the type of phone. Also, once I switch to a new phone the discount will be voided.
Still, their customer service really helped out. That's a $120+(taxes) yearly savings.

That $10 fee is mandatory for smart phones its the data package for it in lames term everyone should pay for it and you shouldn't be excluded from that I mean I know you use a lot of data so do I. They don't charge you that because you use a lot of data, they charge you that because you have a smartphone

Try talking to them now and mention the fact that they can trace the line the previous months to see the data pattern.
Since my mom doesn't even text, she can see this feature is lost on her.
I guess that's why they did it. I also have a business account with 6 lines, so that could have factored in to their decision.

There are a couple models where they comp the premium data fee, like the Replenish. Might want to have your mom get one of these units instead, if they are available when she upgrades.

Yeah, they told me that. I'm bidding on one as a back up.
Originally the 10 dollars a month was a WiMAX surcharge, only charged to people with WiMAX phones... A couple months to a year later they renamed it to "premium data" and started charging all smart phones, which is a joke because they barely have any phones that aren't considered a "smart phone" anymore.
I have been with Sprint for 14 years and believe me I have had my share of ups and downs with their Customer Service Department. I have a fairly large account with them (8 phones) and have always managed to resolve issues. Sometimes I didn't get everything I was asking for, but was satisfied in the end.
Basically it's their plan pricing that keeps me a customer. As many have stated, their service in my area is not the greatest but having compared plans with other carriers I simply couldn't afford them.

Note 3 AT&T $35 Data Plan... Add Minutes?

$35 Data Plan.. Here's the catch you cant order like that from AT&T ..I'll post in a few days where I got it after I gte the Phone and get it activated the Phone(If it's a error I don't want them closing it before I activate)
But basically it looks like it was considered a tablet and therefore qualified for just data plan
Right Now I use T Mobiles $30 a Month Data Plan on a LG 9 ..that Plan comes with $100 minutes.. with is perfect but I wasn't able to order the Note 3 for it.
So the idea is after 180 days I can terminate the att plan pay $300 early termination fee and take the Phone to the T Mo $30 plan so I get the talk minutes..(simply order the pre paid sim card)
In the End I am paying $689 for the Phone but never more than $35 a Month for service(and that's the point... not paying $80 a month)
Yeah I am hoping Google Voice will work in the meantime. If Not I may have to live with Aim
It would probably work if you had the tmobile note 3. Att will be able to detect the att note 3 imei and put you on the correct plan probably. But good luck

I dont understand how next is cheaper... Its better if you want to swap and get a new phone every year but that is expensive too.
Lets compare...
Regular contract - x$ for plan + 299 for phone + 35 activation = 334+x $ For a 2 year plan but most often they let you upgarde at 20 months
Next program - Still pay x$ for plan + Full price of phone ( eg note 3) = 700 + x$ For a 20month period..
Unless i am missing something big

I dont understand how next is cheaper... Its better if you want to swap and get a new phone every year but that is expensive too.

I get a percentage discount on my monthly bill each month for a full year. A supervisor cussed at me when I was trying to get my note 3 on the phone. They kept telling me they would call me to order the phone but no one ever called. Happened 4 days in a row so when I got to talk to a supervisor we got in an argument and she let the F word slip.
That's why my post said "my next program is cheaper than most."

When I was talking to the REP on the Phone I tried to get her to Match T Mobiles $30 Plan .. 5 Gig Data and 100 Minutes Talk .. Nope wont do that either. So I'll just wait a month or 2 and buy a T Mo version of the Phone for $450-$500 as they start flooding ebay..and put my $30 a month T Mo sim in
OR Black Friday is just a few weeks away.. probably buy brand new no contract $500 ..
doubt this is going to work, the phone is a phone and not a tablet. it will not work as a tablet, the system see's the imei and will correct it. i work for att and have seen it happen.
im not even sure what plan you are talking about either, the basic tab by itself plan is $30 for 3gb. not sure what you have.

$80 tmobile unlimited plan

I tried in the Note 3 forum but it's a cluster fu.. over there so I am gonna try here. Does anyone or has anyone used this plan? I want to switch to this one so I can use my phone as a hot spotfor my computer when I'm at home but I don't want to hit some fine print limit. So I'm hoping someone here has done the same in the past.

That will give you truly unlimited data from your phone, with I think 3gb of native tethering.
Do a search and you'll find a lot of answers on how to acomplish what you're trying to do.
Keywords: WiFi tether router
Hope this helps.

Thanks For The reply but that's not quite was I was asking about. Getting around the tethering limits is relatively easy I was curious if I use say 100gb playing like Final Fantasy 14 plus my normal usage will t-mobile come at me and say I've used to much data you know?

No, you will be fine.
Like I've said, do a search and you will see that people here are using hundreds of gigs, some even 1tb+. Truly unlimited is truly unlimited.
I do 300+gb a month and never experienced a slow down or anything of that nature.. Blast for it..

I hate how some people take advantage of *unlimited data. Eventually they will do away with it because of this type of use

Some of these people who use it as a dedicated internet shouldn't advertise it.
this is not how T-mobile setup their plans.
$80 unlimited is phone only data. The plan included 5GB tethering over t-mobile hotspot app.
I hope carriers block the abusers and not punish us all

Agreed. We already went from $70 unlimited to now $80 unlimited.
??? Self-limited or Communty-limited, Unlimited Data ???
Why should someone who is paying for an unlimited data service, not utilize it as to their own prospective needs, or be punished/restricted for doing so???? Anyone urging the same for anyone elses say, TV usage??? Or HULU views??? Isn't it at all feasible, in this world of tolerance (haha), that someones legitimate needs might just be different from someone elses???
Wanna punish someone??? Why not suggest say, the Service Provider, who makes BILLIONS (in profit) annually, providing a service that CLEARLY does NOT cost what is charged, by any reasonable standard?!?!? And I'm OFF my SOAPBOX!!!
Sorry for the rant as well...

Consciously using and abusing versus using subconscious is different. Like me I don't monitor what I use. is use Wi-Fi when I can, etc. I don't rely on my MOBILE phone for my internet. Why don't they get an ISP for heavy use. If you use 100gb pm on a cellphone in a billing period, you must not work and thus you should have access to a WiFi network. To brag about using high amount of data is duh mm .. Learn the game! I'm thinking of the future I don't want them to punish all of a for a few defiant couch potatoes

This is America ...... EVERYTHING is over priced. That's a moot argument. My argument is on principal and moral. I'm not defending the business at all. They all can lower prices. But I like the idea when I use my LTE I don't have to count !megabytes, when people use LTE on purpose because they feel they can now we risk losing unlimited

I can see both the points. Eventually the "abusers" will lift the already high prices to an even higher point. That being said - we, as Americans, get absolutely raped on the cost of our service. Not to mention we are among the slowest in the world when we take what we pay into consideration. So part of me is saying "**** these corporate criminals..." Another part is saying "easy does it...don't ruin a relatively good thing..."

Im REALLY sorry NOW... That I said ANYTHING lol... Why didnt I think of those points to make?!?!?
The point of he T-Mobile network isn't about coverage it's about data that's what they advertise is the "data strong " network they have set up their network to handle the amount of data that is being used unlike the other carriers that have capped data

First of all jack ass I was throwing an arbitrary number out there. I have no idea how much data a MMO pulls. Secondly what's the difference between using a cell phone for my Internet and using Comcast besides I can get similar speed for a much better price using T-Mobile. I am only home for maybe two hours after work and that's enough time to eat mess around on the computer for a bit and crash so **** off with your generalizations. It'd make zero sense for me to spend an extra $100/mo on Comcast just to use maybe 20hrs/wk. If you want to pay my bill then I'll call them tomorrow. If not piss off.

not saying the companies don't make a lot of money, but you do realize that its not 100% profit, setting up 4G LTE and LTE+ speeds for networks is HUGELY expensive.
That being said, competition will always drive prices lower. I sell phones/activations and trust me, 95% of people use 1 gb (or less) each month. we are such a minority that it doesn't matter how much we use.

You're absolutely right. It can go both ways, but at the end of the day truly unlimited is truly unlimited. No matter what the nay sayers may think, their opinion can't over rule the fact that truly unlimited is what it is. Lol...
TM, pushed the whole truly unlimited campaign like mad angry birds head on first. Now that customers are utilizing a service that they signed up for, doesn't give TM any right to try and take that away. Truly Unlimited Data is what customers are paying for.
So for them to even complain now is called: hypocrisy.
It also seems that the ones complaining are perhaps jealous or can't afford the $80 plan or maybe jealous of those who have a grandfathered unlimited plan? Who knows. ..
The fact remains, no matter how you tip the scale, documentation will beat conversation any day.
Truly Unlimited is Truly Unlimited. Pretty black and white to me.
And for goodness sake, what's the difference of streaming 1080p Netflix on your phone vs your 1080p TV? ROFL....

If someone uses 10000gb in a month or 10gb a month the infrastructure cost doesn't change.
I use on average 15-20 GB a month. T-Mobile is flat out the best carrier with the best prices for what they offer. If I'm paying for unlimited data, regardless of whether I use 20 or I use 200 it shouldn't make any difference. T-Mobile makes it a point to advertise that truly unlimited means just that: truly unlimited. They expect people to switch to their network for that very reason. I don't see the person using 300gb a month as an abuser; he/she is taking advantage of a service that is being paid for. They aren't doing it in an unethical way or cheating the system.
