Okay, so being the wise person that I am, I decided that it would be a good idea to get the 4.2.2 sense update a few days/weeks before my carrier (Rogers) pushes it. I'll write it step by step, in case anyone can help me
- I started by making an ADB Backup, rooting the phone, and installing twrp recovery. No issues there
- When the phone started back up, I tried to restore my data, but the adb backup kept getting stuck on "com.Android.contacts" or something similar, so I decided I might as well try getting S-Off so I could change CID and get the 4.2.2 update.
- I used Revone, but it kept failing (error code -1). I posted in that thread about it, but I decided that in the mean time, I would just factory reset my phone.
I stupidly clicked "format" in twrp!
Now, my phone is on twrp with no OS. I tried downloading the rogers rom from HTC Dev, but it was a Zip file, and it won't install. I restarted the phone, and now I can't push anything to it. It says "error: device not found" when I try push the European 1.28 RUU (which I'm not sure if that would even work, because of CID/MID differences since the phone isn't S-Off.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :crying:
Okay, So I finally got the European RUU to push to the phone, only to realize that it's a ".exe" that can't be flashed from twrp. I have no access to a PC

Just flash any stable ROM in the meantime so you can at least boot the phone. Download ARHD, push the zip to your phone, and flash that.
I really don't understand all these people changing CIDs to force updates, especially when they go back to s-on afterward. You're locking your phone into a potentially problematic configuration. I helped another guy this morning who did it and then couldn't boot up but couldn't fix anything because he went back to s-on and locked bootloader.
If you want 4.2.2, do it the right way: S-off, flash firmware, flash rom. If you want stock, there are stock roms. All of this can be done on a Mac.

Well, I flashed CM 10.1, and finally managed to get S-Off. Now my issue is trying to go back to stock HTC Firmware. I can only get the RUU, which obviously doesn't work on Mac. Even If could extract the Zip, I have twrp recovery. How would I go back to a stock recovery that would allow me to get the OTA? I'm really upset about this whole thing. I mean, come on. HTC should've provided a Mac utility that allows users to go back to stock completely. I understand that they give you warnings about doing this kind of stuff, but I should be able to play around with my device and still be able to get it back to a functional factory state. I got iOS 7, and it was incredibly easy to go back. I've upgraded my Blackberry Z10 a 100 times with firmware from all over the world with no issues. I've also never had to deal with this S-crap stuff on my Nexus 4. It's just frustrating for end users.
Anyways, rant aside, would you happen to know how I can go back to a full factory state? I'm on CM 10.1 right now with twrp recovery.

Without a PC to run the RUU, I'm not sure. You can flash stuff, but if you want to be out of the box stock, you need a RUU.
I finally managed to get my phone to work. In case anyone comes across this, I'll write down what I did.
I had too many problems to list. From not being able to access adb on the phone, to the phone's memory being partitioned incorrectly, to the point where even a recovery like twrp couldn't format or access it in order to flash anything ("Unable to mount internal storage").
The solution to all problems (and if you're a Mac user like I am, this is disheartening), is that you'll need to run RUU on a PC. When doing this, you'll likely run into a few error messages.
Error 170: Make sure the device is in fastboot mode before plugging it in (hold power and volume down on boot, and select fastboot with the power button). You can make sure that the computer can see it by going to your device manager in windows, and make sure that it says "My HTC" under "Android Device." If it has a cryptic name with an exclamation mark, or you can't see it by using "fastboot devices" command, you'll continue to get that error.
Error 171: This error kept occuring when the computer could no longer see the phone after the process had already begun. The reasons this happens are many (ie your USB wire or drive might be faulty), but to me, it was because the phone was not going back to the bootloader on its own, and the computer eventually gave up. To solve this, start RUU.exe and WAIT BESIDE IT. You will come across 2 points where it says waiting for bootloader. Have your computer's device manager open, and hold the phone's power button until you see that the "Android Device" or "My HTC" disappears and reappears. RUU should continue when that happens. Again, you will have to do this twice! If you don't, RUU gives up on the phone as it does not go into the bootloader by itself, and will eventually give you an error.
For anyone going through this, just realize that as long as you can get into the bootloader, there's always a way to get it to work. At times, I thought my phone was completely bricked, but no matter what issue you have (including unable to access the phone's internal memory), you can always solve it if you can get into the bootloader. With that said, this process will erase everything on your phone, unfortunately. Everything is done at your own risk, so please don't blame those who are trying to help you. Good luck, and remember to always post your solution online, if you start a topic discussing the issue. I came across many people with the same issue who never came back with their solution!
Edit the title to solved
Not that it has happened to me but I think you could have just sideloaded a custom Rom from twrp and flashed that.

That was one of the first things I tried. It kept coming back with "unable to mount internal storage" or something like that, as I noted earlier. It was really weird, I couldn't format, mount, or do anything to my storage with tarp, and I couldn't get adb to see the phone. A lot of people have the issue with the One X, but I couldn't find a solution anywhere. I think what made the whole thing trickier than it needed to be is the fact that I changed my CID/MID, and in that guide, it is explained that you have to reboot the phone yourself in RUU, but I didn't realize not doing so would result in errors. I kept thinking it was because my device wasn't being seen in adv, so I was trying to get it to boot into any ROM for that to happen, and the inability to flash anything due to the internal storage error really complicated things. It's good to know that even this can be resolved, as I had all but convinced myself that I was dealing with a brick. I hope anyone coming across this issue in the future can benefit from my ordeal.

Hi, My friend recently enlisted my assistance with his phone. He has no 3g signal, the phone can't make calls, and apparently Sprint was having trouble activating it even though it has a clean ESN. It appears to be rooted, and has a custom ROM. I tried installing an EXE to flash me back to stock, but I dont have the correct driver I suppose. I intend to continue reading as I have been for the last 2 hours. Does anyone have any guidance? The old phone number from the previous owner is loaded. Is that halting activation?
Thank you!
I also try to connect it to Wifi. It connects, but wont let me access a web page. It halts about halfway through loading. Radio issue?
Go to this link and download the files and name it HERCIMG.zip and then put that on the root of the sdcard. Once its on the sdcard, shut down the phone. Now turn on the phone while holding the down volume button. Once it verifies the files, press the trackball to confirm the install. Once it is done the phone will reboot and be restored back to stock. Once its stock, have your friend call Sprint and retry activation. Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804692

It does have Clockwork mod, I'm assuming the previous owner installed a ROM, ran into this problem and bought a new phone instead of tinkering. I was directed here from SDX where I have learned some of the ins and outs with my Samsung.
I flashed a team heroC 2.3.4 which is a cyanogen I believe. It booted up fine, and is running but didnt fix my issue. It didnt wipe /System so the issue might be hidden in there? I doubt the end user will want to modify, etc. Also, I've noticed when people enlist me for these projects I also receive the complaints and am expected to do something about it.
I'll give this a shot, and then re-root, and keep trying. In the end, if I dont get it fixed I have a free hero to play with.
Thank you, and +1 to ya.

My phone has -s ON, that seems to be halting this process. I am trying to find the proper driver for this phone now. I have Windows 7, I have it plugged in, I run RUU and it says there is a USB connection error. I don't see it in Device Manager, nor do I see it try to trigger on my PC as a device.
If I rename the HERCIMG to update, and install as sd card/update.zip Will that cause an issue?
I will await a response in fear of bricking.
In Hboot it says can't find Hercdiag.zip
Other Hercdiags
and HercImg.zip
It appears that I have Hboot 1.47.0000
Would renaming to Hercimg.zip do the trick?
In this particular Zip I have:
androidinfo.txt
boot.img
Hboot 1.47
NV MFG
Radio 2.42
recovery.img
Splash
system.img
user data.img

+1, Thank you.
I am s- off now if that makes any kind of difference. I guess I will keep flashing different things until I can get something to work.
I was able to log into a google account over wifi, but still no 3g icon. I flashed the Gapps because all of those were missing somehow. I really wish I could get that HERCIMG to work. It also says Im missing Hercdiag, etc too. So maybe thats the issue?
I have radio 2.42.01.04.27
Is there any further detail I can post that may help us narrow down the cause?
I wish I had the correct data cable so I could use the RUU method. I'm assuming thats why the phone isnt triggering my device manager. (If it wouldnt have the same issue with HERCIMG.zip anyway)
Its gotta be something retarded that I'm overlooking here.
When calling Sprint for activation, the code entered into the dialer wasnt triggering the response necessary for activation either.
Would flashing stock recovery fix the Hboot issue. Maybe the Hboot file is corrupt? I have re-downloaded 3 times, but from the same mediafire host.

Actually now that you are S-OFF put the HERCIMG.zip onto your sdcard and boot into your bootloader. Don't worry about the others missing. Those are irrelevant. Boot into the bootloader when your phone is off by holding volume down and pushing power button. Then when asked for a confirmation press the trackball.
I made some progress. I formatted my SD card to FAT32, It was FAT before. Copied the file over, was able to flash that HERCIMG file.
Once I got logged in, it appears that this phone has been flashed to REVOL. So I guess I have more homework trying to switch it back to Sprint? It has the Sprint Programs installed, and Sprint boot screen.
It has a revol lockscreen, and the carrier in "About Phone" is listed as Revol.
What now? booo... Am I SOL?

I've rooted my Nexus One a long long time ago, and eventually reverted to it's original state. Let's skip ahead a year..
I wan't to use my Nexus One again until I can get my hands on a Nexus 4. I'm trying to root this bad boy, but run into a problem with every method. I got the one click method to work, but it wouldn't boot up. And when I try to go into Bootloader for recovery, it checks for the PASSIMG.ZIP file and then updates. If I click no, it makes no difference, it doesn't let me do anything. Updating will restore the phone to stock(unrooted). So I deleted PASSIMG.ZIP from the SD card. Ever since, I can actually click on Recovery, but I run into trouble(see further below). S is ON btw, I don't remember what this was, but I'm sure I had it OFF before? I have been using an iPhone for the past year and a half, so I apologize for being a noob. I'm not to tech savvy when it comes to these terms, either.
Short explanation:
One Click Root - I can root it, but when I go to Bootloader Recovery it shows the Android guy and a triangle around !
Using the old school method using Windows terminal, recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-passion.img was flashed without problem.
But I can't access Recovery!
In the end I'm trying to at least have an ICS ROM, or Jellybean(Really wanna try Google Now or whatever) if possible.
Check the Wiki for instructions on how to bootloader unlock your phone. Much easier. You can then flash everything you want using fastboot (so make sure you have the fastboot driver installed correctly).
Btw, the triangle means you still have stock recovery.

The unlock padlock icon means the bootloader is unlocked, correct? I've done that. And I actually went through that, and flashed the custom Recovery, still the same result. I'll retry it again.
I figured it out, but I don't get it...
I did this in kind of a different route, so just incase someone runs into a similar problem some how:
I rooted the phone using the one click root software on a windows PC, the N1 was successfully rooted.
However, same error recovery, even after adb flashing recovery(followed wiki and unlockr tutorial).
What I did different to fix the issue, was after the root, I downloaded Rom manager(yes I've done this before too, but...), I flashed the recovery via Rom Manager. After it didn't work(sadface).
I tried it again, but just out of frustration I re-flashed it after flashing. So I flashed the recovery twice, back to back. And poof, I check bootloader, go into recovery, and there it is(just like it used to be).
Close this I guess, (an embarrassing)problem has been solved.
So I have screwed up pretty bad and now tried fixing the problem myself before asking for help.
Earlier I flashed Android Revolution HD 12.3 to finally realize that I didnt work with sprint, however I forgot to make a back-up for my phone. I have tried using adb sideload to install viper's rom v1.1.0 via TWRP. After the flash is complete and I click reboot, I get an error saying "No OS installed! Are you sure you want to reboot?"
If I swipe to reboot, I end up with a black screen with a toolbar at the top. I am totally lost and have been searching to forums for hours on end. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I have been able to get viperROM to boot to the startup screen, however with a minute or so I get an error which states "Precess system is not responding, would you like to close it?" Then my phone restarts to the black screen.
You messed up your partitions by flashing that rom. From bootloader select factory reset to get your partitions back and then sideload your sprint rom and you should be set.
Or this method will work too.

I tried the first method and didnt have any luck. I did notice that when looking through the install folder, the .zips are no longer listed. However, when the phone turns on for a few seconds and I am able to open files through my PC, they are listed there.
Second method got me to the startup screen. As I attempted to connect to wifi, I had no phone service and also there was an error connecting to wifi due to "temporarily avoiding poor connection". Then the phone instantly restarted back to a black screen.

I know, I really lucked out. Took a solid 14+ hours of research and trial and error to figure out how to fix it. I had rooted my old evo 4G a few times thinking I still knew what I was doing, but that was a while ago. I should have definitely took some extra time to do some more research before I flashed.

Hi there,
I have searched high & low on the interwebs for a possible solution to my problem but have yet to yield any significant results.
I was on 4.2.2 Stock, Rooted, with bulletproof, and I had started to get random reboots and then 4 nights ago during the night it decided to get into a reboot loop. It would power up for about 20 mins and then restart again & again so when I woke up it was super hot.
So I thought it was time to update it to 4.3 now in the hope that this would resolve the issue but it didn't. I obtained the relevant RUU (Guru Reset M7 2.24.980.2 for HTC__039) from htc1guru and since I was only wanting to get the OTA in the hope that this would fix any other software issues, I only flashed the recovery. I then proceeded to do the large OTA update. This was successful. Then the reboots started again.
Time for a factory reset now, (which I realise I should have just done in the first place) but after setting up my details in the phone I am unable to get network over 3G/4G and when I go into look at the APNs, it says that no sim card is installed when it definitely is. When I go into Phone Info, it states that my EMEI is 00000000.
After looking around for what feels like hours, I read somewhere that I might need to flash the radio but I only have the radio from the previous RUU(Guru Reset M7 2.24.980.2) or can I use that since I can not find anything around RUUs for 3.63.980.2.? I don't want to make the situation any worse than it already is.
I am hoping that there is a simple explanation and fix & any help or guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance :good:
So you think the problem is that your software is upgraded and not your firmware? If so, you can solve that by dowgrading your software. If you can't find an updated RUU (nothing except a signed file from HTC should be called a RUU), there is still a solution:
- Find a system dump from a phone that is your CID and the version of Android you want. It will be a CWM or TWRP backup.
- Flash the appropriate custom recovery.
- Push the files to your phone in the appropriate directory (you may need to make a backup just to see what the right directory is).
- Restore the backup you just pushed to your phone.
Then factory reset and install the stock recovery. You may need to re-lock the bootloader (I'm not sure). Try to get the correct OTA. If you can't find it, try to download one and save as /sdcard/update.zip. Use the stock recovery to flash it. (You'll need to search for instructions on how to do that. It involves key combinations.) Finally, unlock the bootloader, make a backup, and (optionally) root. Don't install a custom kernel. If your problem persists, you likely have a hardware problem.
Thanks for your reply.
I have no idea if its software/firmware but its showing its on 4.3. I was speculating on the radio possibly needing to be reflashed due to one comment I read on a forum I randomly came across?
So I could use my very first backup I used through TWRP and push that to the phone?
While I am fairly new to Android(had to switch for the HTC ONE), I have been around idevices for a long time and have learnt to always keep multiple backups just in case
I left the bootloader unlocked as most guides say that you don't need to have it locked to get the OTA. I actually tried to find the manual OTA file and do it the way you suggested but at the time I had no luck.
I'll see what I can accomplish tonight.
Apologies on the noobness in regards to RUU.
Is it possible to use a RUU for lets say T-Mobile on an international variant? I see HTC released an RUU for T-Mobile for 4.3 but as far as I can see there isn't any others.

That's the first thing I'd try, yes. But I'm guessing just as much as you are.

Hahahaha Well I trust your guess way more then mine
Would I need s-off to copy the previous backup back onto the phone or would I only need s-off if I had to push something to system(which I do not need to do)?
I tried last night to run rumrunner and it continually failed and basically told me I had 2 different scenarios to resolve it(the following is coming from memory and its very hazy). One was to use a different kernel and the other was to use another ROM, but that wasn't the preferred option.
At work now so will try and restore my original backup tonight at home. Thanks for your help.

Sorry for my late response. You only need s-off to flash firmware that is older, for a different phone CID, or modified by a third party. Or to change other hidden partitions, like to modify the "TAMPERED" flag or to change the CID. Unlocking the bootloader is for changing partitions from fastboot mode: recovery, and maybe also system and boot. You do not need an unlocked bootloader to change these partitions from recovery if you already have a custom recovery installed. (You can definitely modify system and boot, but I'm not sure about modifying recovery with a locked bootloader.)

No need to apologise, I'm just happy that someone has been able to assist me.
I have used one of my previous TWRP backups, unfortunately I couldn't use my very very first one as it was missing some files, it obviously didn't copy it all across for some reason
I now have my EMEI back (woohoo) but I think the backup I used has something wrong in the kernel as I think it has bulletproof installed. I am going to return it to stock but following a procedure here as I need to return it to HTC as the phone will not read any sim cards. I have tried 3 different sim cards and have also tested them in a firends HTC ONE and they all work in his. SO it looks like I do have an actual hardware issue with the phone which isn't cool just before Xmas.
I already have major withdrawals from being able to play ingress :crying:
Thanks heaps for your help.
ok, so i was trying to root my sprint htc one, and everything was going, ok. i unlocked the bootloader simple enough. then i wanted to back up the data, before i tried putting roms on it. well twrp kept saying i only had about 34 mb of space which made no sense since i had formatted it, and only brought back things like contacts and texts. when i checked my phone it said that i had 24gbs. so i couldnt find an answer to this anywhere so while looking through twrp i saw the wipe function. not having seen anything about it, i said, maybe if i reformat it again, itl clear up. so i hit wipe all. well after it was done it only said i had 1.2 gbs, so still confused i went to load my normal os, well i cant. because wiping everything meant the system data the os is on. i spend hours trying to find a fix, as im only able to go between the bootloader and twrp, and i see a sideload option, and after following the steps, i attempt to sideload. everything is going well. Viper looks like its about to install, until at the last second it says install fail. but now i cant even access the recovery menu. literally stuck in the boot loader option. all my contacts and pictures and stuff are backed up, so i have no problem formatting my phone to scratch if it means fixing this, but can anyone point me in the right direction???? i cant find anything on this, ive been searching through this site, and some people with similar issues solve it by sheer luck, but i have no rom back up(since i was trying to do that when i got into this problem) please please help!!!
**edit** i was able to get into twrp by using the recovery steps, though im just back to square 1. is there a guarenteed reliable sideloader that can work?

Try the latest RUU first if it does not work follow the guide from the beginning it will get you fixed up.

Do you still have the memory issue? If so, try running a RUU, and see if that fixes your problem.
If not, just use adb sideload to sideload a ROM. Then wipe everything except internal storage and install the ROM normally.
EDIT: Looks like @BD619 ninja'd me XD
BTW sideload very rarely works when you wipe your sdcard.

hey thanks for the reply. i followed the guide and after some effort, everything seemed good, but when i was trying to load 5.03 sense 6 rom, i got to the htc start up, then it defaulted back to the bootloader..i went with the deodex version of the download, should i try the odex? or a different version all together?
and now it doesnt want to boot into recovery mode either! going to try redoing the steps, but i just cant figure out what the problem is
**edit* i cant fix twrp. the title loads, but thats it. endless loop
ok i got it to seemingly work. restoring content now. sat in fron of my pc for 15 hours...not even sure where imat or if i got any closer to rooting..smh..thank you everyone who helped. if anyone comes across this
to get out of the endless cycle of recover/loading screen.. delete your twrp, or whatevs your using. even if you have the latest, just redownload it. worked for me. i guess there is a huge difference between the odex and the deodex.i had figured deodex was a more refined version, but maybe it had more complicated software. in any case, if you are at a point where you dont have a base os, and you make it this far, go with odex, it worked for me. htc is big on back up, so i was more worried about having to scrap my phone then i was regaining data, especially with most of my stuff backed up to google drive. hopefully you guys are careful.
now...about this backup issue i had in the first place. how can i fix the storage issue? i have a 32 gb phone minus partition leaves me with over 24gb..why is it going based off the separate phonememory slot? why cant i change it?
