I've got an XPERIA x8 which I've recently re-rooted and upgraded from Froyo to Gingerbread (read more about this nightmare here). One of the first things I installed (just because I noticed it in Play Store and it was very well reviewed) was "Go Launcher Ex" and it's blowing my mind. Everything is nice and is the way an android phone should already come! However, it's not too good for performance on such an old device. At the moment I'm coping with it anyway. It's awesome-ness outweighs it's bloated-ness a fair bit (though the Next Browser has crashed my phone a few times so back to Opera Mini for now). So I just wondered what other people who use this phone use and think about the available Home Launchers out there.
Personally, I got a bit bored of LauncherPro on Froyo as it was pretty buggy and not very good at space management compared to Go Launcher. The things about Go Launcher I'm liking are how easy it is to customise, the fact shortcuts can be grouped in the app drawer (automatically as well!), dock and home screens (LauncherPro was buggy at this, opening a folder and going into an app would sometimes cause the folder to stay open but invisible and nothing to be selectable on the home), how you can order the app drawer in numerous ways, how many home screens can be added (I try not to overdo widgets, but I like to have the simple time/date/weather combo one as it's useful and stylish and one or two for power/performance management which I usually combine on one home screen to keep the others speedier) and it's stylish and to be honest, quite quick in itself. The only problem is that while it runs smoothly, I know that it's keeping it's pretty large share of memory while I'm trying to use other things, so if there's anything similar but with only the stuff I like about Go Launcher, I'd like to try it out. So, lemme hear what's your favourite and why
zeam launcher all the way for the smooth, minimalistic graphic and obviously for the personalization.

Recommend the above launcher since its xperia styled and more customizable
very good and smooth.
For me the best launcher is launcher pro. It's fast, smooth, lightweight and has a lot of options. This launcher can look as you want, as arc launcher, as s launcher, as 4.0 launcher, just change background and icons.
Holo launcher is light simple and fast

The lag seen with ADW is really starting to annoy me. At first I was ultra happy with the phone, but then some of my friends with iphone 4s pointed out how choppy the switching of homescreens was on the N1 along with the stutter seen on the app drawer. I have googled everything and cant find a fix. I already tried doing the recomended settings from the link below, but there is still lag. Will switching to launcher pro fix my issues? I am hesitant to switch because I love that ADW has the look of the stock froyo launcher, is it even possible to have the stock dock look in launcher pro?

Ignorance is bliss...
Now ask your friends with iPhone to show you an app that will automatically turn off their WiFi and turn on BT when they leave their home, for example. Then ask them to show you live wallpaper on their phones. When they fail, chill out and understand that you can't fix it. Android launchers aren't capable of seamless scrolling, because the system behind them wasn't meant for pretty graphics.
You're only 2346851 in number to ask this question.

Haha so true, ignorance is great. Yea i know alot of people had similar questions, but all the threads i found were not for N1s and they were pretty old, figured out some genius must have done something about it since just about everything else has been done on these xda forums. I just hate seeing wasted potential. The snapdragon and 512mb ram is more than enough horsepower to get simple smooth scrolling down. Just wish there was some type of gpu acceleration support.
By the way how do you turn off the wifi automatically when you leave home? I rely on the powercontrol widget.
I had a similar point from an iPhone user, I barely noticed it - and then I pointed out I was running a custom launcher (launcher pro) with a TON of widgets and animated wallpaper. Since then an update has made it silky smooth.
There are a few themes in launcher pro, default froyo is one - I use wide froyo which gives me:
phone-contacts-app-drawer-sms-browser
buttons.
Gingerbread should help in this department, or so they say. Currently the best the launchers can do still has a hiccup or two from time to time. Personally, I don't even notice it, using LauncherPro, as the poster above me, with all 7 screens full of icons and widgets, and Starfield wallpaper.
Locale. It's a great concept app. I used it, but stopped - now I just keep BT and WiFi constantly on (BT almost doesn't drain battery - usually less than 2% of the power - and WiFi is present at home and at work, so I turn it off only when the phone is expected to last long in places where no WiFi is found). Since I don't have other uses - like turning down the volume automatically in specific places, etc - I stopped using it.

Have you changed the app drawer to 4 apps per row? I remember 5 per row being set on cm6, that will make some difference.
Yes, launcher Pro has a Froyo dock look. In the settings its called "froyo" I think. It looks pretty good, a little different than ADW.

Yea i did change it to 4 apps per row, and it did help a little. Im going to test out launcher pro. Is there anything i should know about switching launchers and running cyanogen 6? If i dont like launcher pro will it be easy to switch back? Some places said that adw still runs in the background and that i have to uninstall adw for it to not hog any resources.

You can easily switch back. A lot of people seems to be experiencing a little lag with adw in the latest CM version. Launcher pro doesn't have this issue.
I'm not sure about Adw running in the background, but you can easily uninstall it using titanium backup.
I just played around with launcherpro and im not impressed. There was still lag, though it could have been because i didnt set a default launcher and adw was still running in the background. The switching between the homescreens was a little smoother, but thats because it did it alot slower. I prefer the more stock look that adw offers. On launcher pro the screens had 4x4 columns/rows but i didnt like the grid spacing. For some reason my beautiful widgets weather/clock was 20% smaller in size compared to ADW. Not sure why the widgets and icon sizes are smaller in launcherpro (i kept switching back and forth between launchers to compare).

My experience is that Launcher pro is generally smoother and faster than ADW. I believe the newer versions of ADW have improved quite a bit, but LP still gets my vote.
However since the 22x nightlies as well as the official 6.1RC1, I have been experiencing some lags no matter which launcher I am using
If you need to stay with CM, you might wanna try another kernel, it helps

I bought my nexus with cm6 already installed, and still havent bothered updating to the newest 6.1 version. Mainly im just waiting till the end of the month. Dont want to mess anything up and i need my phone to be fully functional till then. All i know is that in the sd card I saw a clockworkmod file, so im assuming thats the backup. I will go into installing custom roms probably when gingerbread is released. I might try installing launcher pro again and uninstalling adw fully and see if that fixes the lag. I like ADW and just wish the app scrolling was a little more smooth.
**** I just found out that my ADW version was 1.0.1, and there have many updates since then. I found a 1.2.0 version and will test that out. http://code.google.com/p/adw-launcher-android/downloads/list
Learn to play with your N1. Once you're proficient, you could easily do partial wipes and ROM flips inside of 5mins.
Heck, if you've got a good wifi you might be able to wipe full and restore inside of 10 mins.
Point being, you'd feel safer about trying/looking at changes like a new different launcher and ROMs, knowing that you can flip back to a solid setup with all your data and apps intact.
This play is part of the beauty in the N1.

Couldn't agree more I used to juggle roms and now I use miuimod with lpp with the screen cache turned off and if I have to compete against a iPhone showdown then I put my min CPU at 384 and it should be as smooth if not smoother. n1 is great for tinkering

Found out the cause of the problem was live wallpapers. On launcher pro, as soon as live wallpaper was disabled it ran like butter. I was hoping to get live wallpapers to work also, but having lag is not a good trade off.

A lot of it depends on the specific wallpaper in question. Slower, more subtle animations tend to behave better (and use less battery) than some of the more intense ones. I recommend one called Substrate - it slowly evolves and changes, but keeps the homescreen transitions very smooth and snappy.
I'm currently running one called "better matrix" or something similar that is very eye catching but doesn't bog things down too much.
Just curious what the GTab owners that are running HC are using as their default launcher? I just flashed HC today, and actually intend on keeping it for a while. My problem is, I really miss using launcher pro on my Froyo roms. Just the ability to resize wigets and define columns and rows is invaluable. I've been reading on Xoom forums that many of it's users have actualy reverted back to ADW or LP. It's also been said that the HC widgets (scrollable) will still work, regardless of the launcher used.
SO...easy question, anybody go back to VTL or LP in lieux of the stock HC launcher? I think I'll mess with it tomorrow and see if I like it better. The one thing I think I like about the stock launcher is the long press ot add items to the home screen.
I am in the same boat. The HC launcher sucks. Sure there are some aspect that are nice but nothing that would make me stick with it as a long term launcher.
I may try my LP+ a little later.

I was running it for a while to see if I wanted to go in that direction. I never really used VTL all that much. Sometimes too much customization can get confusing. It ran fine while installed, no FCs (well, no more than stock launcher or LP, anyway) and no problems with widgets, etc. I think they probably said that it wasn't compatible for Honeycomb so that folks that install it don't come asking them to fix things. i mean, technically, honeycomb itself is buggy, so until the firmware is stable, a launcher can't be blamed for any hiccups that may occur.
In any case. I ended up installing Launcher Pro, and frankly, I'm loving it. It doesn't have the same honeycomb feel when adding items ot home page, but really, I only do this occasionally, anyway. and the app drawer isn't the same, obviously, but all in all, I like how it looks, and runs. I can use the entire screen for widgets (and resize them BIG +) and icons.
The only thing lost is the dock that's at the top of the HC screens, with search, apps, and + (add item to home screen)
well, I never use search, and I long press ot add items, so all I needed was my app drawer access. I set LP for 1 dock, no background, then added the app drawer icon to the very bottom of the "dock" so it looks like a perminant app drawer icon right above the notification bar. Looks sharp, if you ask me.

So it does. I gave it another shot and got a pretty sweet setup I think.
So I switched over to LP+ and now my battery life while not on (in standby) sucks and now I am back to the random shut downs when trying to power up from standby. The way it used to with older ROMs witch had never happened with an HC rom.
Now I could be full of it but that is me experience since installing LP+ Take it for what it's worth.
any reason why i get Such a terrible redraw on the stock launcher? i am rooted, debloated and running hte V6 script (does it with it installed and not installed) and i get bad redraw probs...any fixes? with ADW i get nothing..but i kinda like moto lancher...
thanks!!
I believe it's to do with how much memory is allocated for the launcher and whether its set to stay resident.
I'm sure it can be manipulated in the framework somewhere probably systemui.

i just made ADW look almost excatley like the blur launcher so im ok with that..and it runs so much better..i just wish i could find the EXCATE look alike dock for adw..
Better off trying to hack the framework and work it out from there, i also prefer the stock launcher cos it's refereshingly different enough to most other launchers i've used and i've used them all including- Sony Arc, Samsung Galaxy S 2 and optimus 2x/3D launchers.
Just wish the stock launcher had an option for folders like the Arc, very handy.

Here's a fix: Move apps from Media Area to Phone if any. Tell me if this helps.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
That could speed things up.
-smc
there was only one app (game time) on the Media Area and no it didn't do anything. The thing is that I'm using Launcher Pro and it is still VERY SLOW to load everything up EVERY TIME I go back to the homescreen. This phone is acting slower than my D2GG
the new blur launcher is very memory hungry. It constantly gets killed (when launching another memory intensive app), then when you get back to home (or even want to see running apps) the horrible redraw/delay happens. Especially if you have widgets on the home screen and stuff like beautiful weather, expect horrible performance out of it. I can't understand why Motorola released the phone with 512MB RAM only...
The only true way to fix this is to go ADW or Launcher Pro (or other lightweight launcher). I was long time ADW fan but it feels LauncherPro behaves better on our phones. Using it now, screen redraw is minimal if not non-existent. Happy now. (not as happy if phone had 1G RAM )
using launcher pro, when I unlock the home screen sometimes it is drawn black where my shortcuts should be and the bottom shortcut bar is displayed fine

That's been a bug with launcher pro for a looooooong time. Just slide your finger across the screen and everything will appear just fine.

Hello, I am quite new on the Xoom and Android, and I just discovered that we can easily change the ICS Launcher ... I thought we could only do this by adding a piece of software on top of ICS and I didn't want to do that for performances reasons ...
But yesterday I discovered I was totally wrong about the launchers, I tried "Nova Launcher" which is free on the market, and I was absolutly amazed about this launcher fluidity : using the stock ICS launcher, I couldn't add a widget without slowing down everything, going from icones pages to icones pages became then laggy ...
Now with Nova Launcher, no more lags !!! (well, as always, except if you use animated backgrounds but I don't).
I was feeling like having a Quad Core Xoom ! Plus the sliding effects are beautiful (3D cube effect), you can also have a dock on the bottom of the screen, chose how many columns and lines of icones you want, etc ...
Any Xoom user should install this, you will feel like having a new device with perfect fluidity !
Great info! Thanks!
Sent from my Xoom
Had to try it Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 running ICS after reading about it here and WOW the speed is amazing. Stock ICS was pretty good but this is just another level. Highly recommendable!
Nice. I like this.
Thanks I'll Install That
A little trick : to have the best fluidity possible, I disabled the option which let the background image move when you change of icones page (sorry, I don't remember the exact name of this feature in the options menu).
APEX is the other high quality ICS launcher. I ended up going with Apex on both phone and tablet. Try the free one on market.

Agree! I have Apex on my phone and tablet as well. Best launcher I've ever tried (out of many) and the developer is very open to suggestions and bug reports. Bought the pro version to support this great app.
I also feel Apex Launcher is the best. Plus, Apex Launcher integrates directly into the Cyanogenmod Launcher Settings. It's a neat feature if you're into that. (I am not sure if Nova Launcher does this...)
With the intention of supporting the developer and unlocking the pro features, i also bought Apex Launcher, and I am having no regrets.
I was on Apex, but switched to Nova. I like its dock better on tablets than Apex's; it's a bit bigger and spaced more normally. I also noticed Nova's search bar in both phone and tablet mode is correctly proportioned to the stock launcher's search bars and the Apex one is a bit bigger and stretched. It's picky, but I'm CDO (OCD in alphabetical order) by nature. Also, I like Nova's organization and the fact by integrating Nova Prime with TeslaUnread, I don't have to install another app for unread counts on my widget locker. There's also the issue Apex has with themes on tablets where the themed icons are tiny and look minuscule compared to the ones without a themed icon which are but normal size. I've brought this up MANY times and each time I get a "oh, we just found the bug and fixed it" every time, so Idk if they just found the wrong bug and fized something else by accident or the bug is more pesky than it appears, but I'd much prefer Nova's correct theme scaling regardless of if I have to apply it myself. Currently, however, I've switched from Lustre back to stock ICS cuz I like the rounded better. Does Apex Pro have the platform folder style? That's another thing in Nova I couldn't live without. Plus the overscroll effect on tablets in Nova has correct margines but goes way too far off the screen in Apex.
Nova isn't THAT good - ok, it's fast, but it has some bugs, like dock isn't docked - there can be icons UNDER dock, which is quite stupid (and I haven't seen option to alter that), then, placing icons into dock is frustratingly inaccurate (hovering over the icon place will place icon to RIGHT (not correct, but as direction -> left, right) place).
Not good for me. I prefer stock. Will try Apex now...
I didn't like NOVA.
I am using Go Launcher EX (not the tablet/HD version, but the regular version).
Loving NOVA!
Don't need the dock. With EOS rom, I can add quick launch items to the status bar. Who needs a dock?
Anyhow, very stable and fast.
Also the gestures are a good feature as well. Just remembered that I can also change icons easily.

I have absolutly no problem with the dock, all is OK for me, I didn't find a single bug yet.
ADW Launcher EX (the paid version) is still the smoothest launcher. Maybe it doesn't have that ICS look that you may love, but it is the best launcher for tablets.
It is smooth even with live wallpapers (only the lightest, but it behaves far better than stock/nova/apex launcher)
Im using Nova a week now and it's awsome! And the bar ahhh it's epic
using Nova after i saw recommendation here!! im satisfied but i have one problem...when i receive sms on ics xoom they dont appear on the screen like it was in honeycombdoes anyone have this problem?
I've been using Nova since its inception, but its just not what I desire for my Xoom. Both Apex and Nova lack the small features I really want for my tablet, but I'm really leaning towards purchasing Apex. It just has a little bit more.
Nova is fantastic for my GNex, but the Xoom is a totally different experience. I can't wait for Chameleon launcher in the fall.
I went back to ADW. Too many force closes with Nova. I too am waiting for Chameleon.

I love them both (Apex has better themes SO FAR but Nova's are coming close already, and the tablet layout of Nova is 10X better on Nova since the overscroll effect actually works best on it and grid sizes are more correct). I prefer Nova's aesthetics (like Holo design for TeslaUnread + the option for changing the Color Theme in the latest beta that makes all of the blues whichever colour you pick). I've got Nova Prime and regular Apex since regular Apex has 9/10 the paid features of Nova anyways. I'm excited for Chameleon as well, though, so we'll see what happens!
Would anyone recommend a different launcher to replace Touchwiz?
I've used nova launcher on my OP1 but are there any other launchers that would be recommended?
honestly i haven't used Nova since my Nexus 6p days, after Oneplus 3t i started using default launcher. the samsung one isn't that bad
I have been using Apex launcher since Galaxy S3 together with weather/time/cal widget beautiful widgets app (I found out about this thanks for flossy on youtube) it makes for a perfect experience and I set all the backgrounds to black, looks like app icons are physically above the screen.
Tried giving the stock launcher a good try. I ended up going back to Nova. I like the customization too much. The good news is it's faster then hell on this phone. Love it.
I also ended up going back to SwiftKey. It does such a good job of knowing what I want to type.
I like stock but Nova is great on this phone. Especially if you get into the sesame integration, very quick to use.
Action launcher is the only other one worth a damn IMO.

I have been using Apex launcher since Galaxy S3 together with weather/time/cal widget beautiful widgets app (I found out about this thanks for flossy on youtube) it makes for a perfect experience and I set all the backgrounds to black, looks like app icons are physically above the screen.

a40l, most of the launchers I have tried do not let me use the weather widget that I use with stock touchwiz. Could you tell me specifically what weather app you are talking about that gives me a good weather widget for Apex? I'm gonna give it a try. Your post makes Apex, & your configuration, sound inviting. Thanks
I use tabs in the app drawer instead of folders, so Nova Prime works the best for me. And it's still the quickest launcher around, bar none.
