when i read at this page.... gsmarena.com/htc_desire_c-4759.php
at the storage it has "4GB include" but the device has 90MB rom and 940MB memory...
anyone please explain that
p/s this is my first post and i'm from vietnam, sorry for my bad english.
hello all you guy :good:

Welcome to XDA
I don't exactly know how it works but you only get around 1GB of space you could actually use!

Usuasable memory..
You are right. Both the websites and the box in which the phone is shipped shows the internal memory to be 4GB. But in reality this storage space is also used to store the phone's software. So the 4GB is actually partitioned into two parts, one storing the software and another part as the actual usable memory which can be used by the user. So you get a little less than 1GB of internal memory.. around 935mb or something. To know more.. go to HTC's website.

actually its split in three parts
1 part for the OS,sense,etc
2 0.94 gb for apps
3 ~90mb for storage (media,pictures etc)

so part 1 take for 3GB??

apparently ICS+Sense 4.0+bloatware=3gb
it's like the galaxy s4, from 16gb you get ~10gb of user storage
imo this is just a marketing scheme something like internet speed ads. they say "internet speeds up to 150mbps" not 18mBps(even though it's the same thing) because ppl like big numbers ;the difference is you still have the same internet speed while with the phone the 4gb mem is a lie ....unless you format the whole internal memory and use the phone as a throwing weapon....

and even though it has 512 MB RAM, we just get only 414 MB

Actually it is 512 or 414 mob of RAM..?

Our phone has 512mb RAM but the android system itself uses ~100mb so we get to use only 414mb

Galaxy S has more NAND memory hidden?!?!

http://android.modaco.com/content-page/312298/got-the-stalling-problem-rooted-try-this/page/180/#
if im not wrong.. there is a total of 2GB oneNAND space on this moviMCP chip that Samsung uses.. It has 16GB moviNAND and 16G bit (2GB) of oneNAND for random access.. 1.4GB is accounted for, another 600MB is still unknown..
since this moviMCP is configurable which is confusing but the moviNAND is sequential, thats why is slower.. OneNAND has NOR interface which makes it suitable for random access and can hv 20MB/s transfer speed so the stl blocks should be sitting on it..

One question. When you put a 2gb memory card into a PC, do you see the full 2gb?
No you wont see 2GB but definitely more than 1.4gb!

but if it doesn't....
only around 1.8gb exists on a 2gb space. minus some for system usage, that's about right....no magical space except only in dreams.
But the 16Gbit we are speaking of don't have to be counted *1024 instead of 1000 again again when calculating in GiB. That are really full 2GiB, 2048MiB and so on. Did you think raspdeep, one of the top devs here would be that much of an idiot?

[Q] Ramdom Access Memory

Hello running Teamhacksung ICS 15 with ICY GLITCH v14-
I need some help understanding this....I have 2 gb internal storage? 13.03 gb USB storage? 4 gb external micro-sd card? I have 1.85 available Internal 11.74 USB ...all that being said...why is my memory being so taxed? please see attached screenshot
The Captivate has 512 MB of RAM, 16GB of NAND flash memory (partitioned for different parts of the OS), and you have a 4 GB NAND flash Micro SD card.
RAM is different from flash memory or a hard disk. RAM is what your phone uses to run software and hold temporary data for quick access.
Lol because our phones ram sucks.... at best i get ~ 125MB free ram. I avg 40-80 MB with all my widgets and a few apps open.
Edit: that 512MB is a lie... THE CAKE IS A LIE! lol
But thats with all apps running at startup? If you have less apps running shouldnt you have less stress on RAM? Man it sucks someone hasnt developed an app similar to readyboost in I HATE WINDOWS...doesnt it use flash memory as ram? Ok...so with reference to my screenshot my memory usage is normal?
Why do you want free RAM? If it's unused, it's wasted. Another tidbit that no one seems to ever mention is that resources in Android are memory-mapped. If things like images and other binary objects are aligned properly, they will not be copied into RAM at runtime, but read directly from their stored location.
This is true. But android doesn't always manage its memory perfectly. I usually close apps out of habit, but if I let it I can have alot of apps open and I won't notice. Then again I've been using since 2.1 and that REALLY sucked with memory management.

True. 340MB is free for user space. The rest is for kernel, video, audio buffers, etc.
340MB(Galaxyian) is on big MEM kernels(truly 344MB on others, but he found a way to keep HD recording!) On any stock ROM's it is 329MB available...
Image above says he has closer to 355mb

For me Ramexpander say is not compatible with Ace.
I heard swapping partition from sd card to increase the ram, sd card might get damaged!!, is it true?
Reduces SD Life so yes.
Sent from my iPhone
but i guess you will change your sd card before it gets damaged so much, that you will notice.
i only had this once on a USB pendrive. it loses data since some weeks ago. but its about 8 years old.
lets say that todays SD cards have better lifetime than years old USB sticks. lets also say that you use your sd card more often than i used this stick (backups later car-radio). so we can say your SD card might have a bit less lifetime. lets say 6 years. in 6 years you will (most likely) have a new phone, sd cards are "oldies" and if not, 1TB cards are state-of-the-art.
so....yes you loose lifetime but i dont think you will use it till it "dies"

It really depends on use. When I swapped i ate through my sdcard in less than 6 months.. so there you go. Keeping low swappinness will increase sd card life, but it does depend on use.

there are quite a few apps for increasing the ram like ramexpander and swapper...
but before using these apps remember that the read and write speed of sd card(which is secondary storage) is vey less as compared to that of the internal ram.. and probably thats why ram is very expensive as compared to sd card...
so if you use these apps may take a bit longer to start and even the best of sd cards i.e. the class 10 one won't last longer than 6 months...
Increasing ram
Hi i install ram manager pro apk on gts5830i then i create a swap file 128mb using this apk, then on sd card i see swap file img does it mean my phone ram increased.... i didn't install any kernel for it... plz does tell me if it increase ram or not...
I tried something on a other phone from my neighbor. is a huawei with same specs than the galaxy ace..
I moved apps to SD card with link2SD and created a Swap file in the internal storage.
The internal storage is much faster than the SD card and much better for swap file.

What is RAM
Random Access Memory (RAM) is temporary data storage that the CPU uses during calculations. The more RAM a device has, the more calculated results the CPU can store - which means less time the CPU has to do the same thing over and over again. In other words, the CPU can check RAM to see if it has already made a particular calculation in the recent past. If it has, it can use the pre-computed results instead of wasting processing time recomputing the same calculation. In short, more RAM means a more efficient (and faster) device.
SWAP
What is SWAP
Swap is, in short, virtual RAM. With swap, a small portion of the hard drive is set aside and used like RAM. The computer will attempt to keep as much information as possible in RAM until the RAM is full. At that point, the computer will begin moving inactive blocks of memory (called pages) to the hard disk, freeing up RAM for active processes. If one of the pages on the hard disk needs to be accessed again, it will be moved back into RAM, and a different inactive page in RAM will be moved onto the hard disk ('swapped'). The trade off is disks and SD cards are considerably slower than physical RAM, so when something needs to be swapped, there is a noticeable performance hit.
Unlike traditional swap, Android's Memory Manager kills inactive processes to free up memory. Android signals to the process, then the process will usually write out a small bit of specific information about its state (for example, Google Maps may write out the map view coordinates; Browser might write the URL of the page being viewed) and then the process exits. When you next access that application, it is restarted: the application is loaded from storage, and retrieves the state information that it saved when it last closed. In some applications, this makes it seem as if the application never closed at all. This is not much different from traditional swap, except that Android apps are specially programed to write out very specific information, making Android's Memory Manager more efficient that swap.

Every phone I buy always has less than the advertised storage space, I understand some will be taken by the rom and apps.
What I wanna know is what the heck is eating almost 8 gigs? That's a retarded high amount.

theres always about 600-700mb free. wtf?
then when you free it up with a task killer, theres only about 1gb of free ram.

It seems to be system reserved storage. The size gets larger as you go up in storage size. Considering the benchmarks on the I/O being chart toppers, it's possible that it is being reserved as a performance booster of some sort.

You have to factor in reserved RAM (my S3 has 2GB but only 1630MB is available to apps. Part of that is dedicated to the graphics chip and the rest is system reserved.
That said, you will not have RAM issues with 6-700MB free. I run a ton of apps at the same time on mine and with the exception of some huge games, I rarely have run out of RAM and had a background app killed by the OS.
512MB phones only had like 384MB available total because of the other 128 going to the GPU.

Yea my bad.
It's a 32 Gb phone, and you can see by the pic that almost 8 gigs is being eaten up by "other". That's about what the LTE came with. That's just an insane number. They shouldn't be able to advertise a 32 gig phone when all you're really getting is 24-25 gigs.

For one thing, it's measured differently. When ANY manufacturer of Memory based ANYTHING (except RAM for some reason.) says "this-many-gigs" they are actually measuring the bytes. So, they really mean 32,000,000 bytes. When converted to Gb this is only 29.8 GB.
False advertising? Kind of. But seriously every storage manufacturer does this so it's common practice at this point.
So then we see that the OS and all the other stuff is taking up around 7GB. That still seems ridiculous given a Windows 7 install can take up as little as 8GB.

Hi,
I'm a bit surprised that if I add free memory and used memory from the Settings app the total is about 1.7 gb. Ain't we supposed to get 2gb? I hope sony didn't do the hdd trick (see wikipedia page on Kibibyte, I cannot post link as a junior member) and even so 2000000/1048576 = 1.907 ... where's my ram?
Under CPU-Z that show : 1.732Mb.

yes it does but I thought it will be included in the "used memory"... if the OS takes 300 mb that's ok but why I only got 900 mb free when I kill all apps? I used to have a nexus 4 and with the same amount of memory on chip there was a *LOT* more available in the settings menu.

That 900MB figure is about the same I normally have free. Various apps and services take up about 800MB on my phone, which seems excessive but I've turned off all background stuff that I can (some Google and Xperia services just won't go away, however). The only good news is that Android will free up memory if it's needed so that 900MB is not a finite figure (at least that's what I assume).
Hmm. I generally have no more than about 300 mb free memory at any given moment. Even just a few minutes after reboot. No weird apps or excessive widgets. Do you guys really have 900 mb free? You can check your memory on the fly using Cool Tool from Google Play.
The Z3C has 2GB of RAM, don't worry. What you are missing is used by shared graphics memory. BTW: This is exactly the reason why the Z3 has 3GB of memory (instead of 2GB) for its screen resolution is full HD opposed to "only" HD on the Z3C.
Anyhow, is it really necessary to start another thread on the same topic if there already is one?

I have never had any doubts about the two gigs. But how much free memory do you have on your Z3C after a reboot and after a few hours of typical usage? My other phones with this much ram have generally had a lot more memory available at any given moment. Not that *free* memory is of any particular use in android, but I'm still curious to see whether your Z3C's are the same.

When I boot up the phone and immediatly check it shows some 800MB of free memory. About 500 to 600MB after a couple of days, fluctuating though. However, don't think these numbers have any meaning for Android keeps as much in memory as possible in order to increase responsiveness. It also depends on the Apps installed and the bloat disabled/blocked. Further, comparing it to other phones you had earlier might also be misleading since the version of Android could be a different one, hence comparing apples to apples would just not be possible.
