So I'm new to the rooting and ROM game. Its fun and I enjoy doing it. When I got my HTC One from Google, I immediately rooted it and flashed a new recovery. My next step in the learning process is learning how to unroot and go back to stock. For example if I need to send it in for RMA. What does this process entail and how do I do it???
Relocking the bootloader I can do, I think, its the "unflashing" recovery and reverting to stock that I'm in need of assistance on.
Thanks!
can anyone help with this as im trying to find the same thing
You can return to stock using S-OFF, flashing a signed RUU and turning the security flag back on.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2158151

Hello Guys,
I got my New Incredible S two days ago but I am unaware of the rooting/unlocking process.
Here are my questions:
1. I am now on Stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 ROM. Is there anyway that I can root my device without having to unlock it.
2. If I do root the device then will I be able to unroot it and revert back to stock (Any risks)
3. If I choose to unlock the device, can I revert back and re-lock it.
4. What is the difference between S-ON and S-OFF (I dont understand the terms in the first place)
5. Difference between the rooting and unlocking process.
Please guys, i will be greatfull if any of you can help me out with my queries. I am new to HTC. I was previously using a Galaxy S and it was too simple for me to install custom roms. Came to HTC only for the Sense UI.
Thank you.

Welcome to HTC. I suggest you search and read the sticky posts in the forum. It will provide you with knowledge and answer your questions. On the HTC S-OFF provides you with a true unlocked system which makes it very easy to mod.
The official HTC unlock method does not really provide you with a flly unlocked system, so there are some mods that aren't as easy or impossible to perform.

Yes the Revolutionary S-OFF can be undone and reverted back to S-ON. Yes if you S-OFF and keep your stock ROM, then you should get the ICS OTA notification, but you will have to revert back to stock in order to apply it.

Sorry mate, that did not clear my mind. In simple words, If I choose to S-OFF and stay on the stock rom Gingerbread 2.3.5, will I be able to apply the official ICS update even though I have S-OFF with stock rom.

No the OTA update will fail because the S-OFF process write protects the bootloader and prevents anything from overwritng it to preserve S-OFF. The OTA will have a new version of the bootloader and since it will not be able to replace and update the S-OFF bootloader, you will end up with a phone that will not boot.

Thanks man. No more questions for now. I think I will wait for the Official update to arrive on my phone and then update to Custom roms if I dont find the OTA update interesting enough.
Hi my HTC One is one of the units that has the purple haze with photos at night (so ironic because it's supposed to be good in low light...) and it's gotten worse so I want to return it back to Sprint (I also have the insurance).
The store said that I can return it to Sprint and see if they can fix or replace it. However, I wasn't sure if they accept rooted phones or it voids the eligibility? I've had this issue even when it was stock and unrooted but I thought it could be fixed with a custom rom lol.
So I just wanted to know if I need to go through the process of unrooting it and bringing everything back to stock to return first?
I saw this and wondering if it was too good to be true? I'd much rather not go through the process of unrooting if I don't need to.

yes rooting voids the warranty of the device.. they get to know the tampering when they see ***tampered*** and ***unlocked*** flags... anyways you can run a ruu a return it to fully stock and get ***locked*** flag easliy... which will give back your warranty...:good:

Thanks so just curious when running the RUU, is it okay that the ROM i'm currently on is a 4.4? (Badboy) I read that it needs to be S-Off and I think mine is S-On. Does that prevent me from running the RUU?

no it will not prevent it from running RUU but if you want you can mask that s-off flag by s-on... just google it..
Thanks a lot everyone! I just ended up doing the RUU and returning it to stock .
One weird thing was that I ended up using Hasoon's all in one toolkit and it initially couldn't detect the device (error: device offline). I think it has something to do with the new Android SDK. Is the toolkit out of date now? Do people still use it?
I just ended up manually going to bootloader and then just relocking it through hasoon that way but just curious if it's advisable to continue using the all in one toolkit or if it is too outdated.
Hi guys, I got an original M7 last year, which was running stock and I flashed bigxie's GPE 4.4.2 ROM. I want to sell my M7 now and can anyone guide me to flashing back to stock sense 4.4.2?

this two guides are a bit confusing, as i was hoping to get a stock sense zip.file in which i can just flash and un-root, re-lock the bootloader and get done with it. I'll be selling this phone to a friend of mine and he said he wanted to try out sense and he'll flash custom rom after he's done testing so I guess i don't really need to go 100% stock as long as it's running sense, unrooted, running stock recovery and able to receive OTA. Can anybody guide me to that? It will be a biiiiig help cause i'm still a newbie in these and it would mean a whole lot to me. Thanks

Look, if he's anyway gonna flash a custom ROM, you're gonna make his work harder by resetting it to stock as he will have to unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery, root and then a ROM. So, if that's the case, just flash a Sense ROM like ARHD and sell it to him. So, to flash a custom rom, all he has to do is wipe and flash it.
If, for some reason, he insists on a stock phone which on which he's gonna flash a ROM (makes no sense to me), follow the 2nd guide. If you're confused what to do, I can help you out. Post the output of you're 'fastboot getvar all' and remove imei and s/n
P.S. ' running sense, unrooted, running stock recovery and able to receive OTA ' is a fully stock phone
Except that a fully stock phone is S-ON while you're S-OFF

Hey guys.
Another one trying to get back to issued state before returning to UK carrier for purple tint camera repair.
I've got my unlocked rooted S-OFFed HTC One M7 phone back to carrier stock Sense 5.5 from a kindly provided TW backup.
The carrier updates are d/l-ing but when it reboots to install it goes into my TW recovery.
I'm on hboot 1.57.
Tried installing stock recovery but I must be missing a step.
1) How to let the carrier Sense 6 updates install automatically?
Thanks in advance.
You will have to get back to stock recovery. It will not load as long as you have anything else.

Thank you.
I had to strip a carrier recovery image from a carrier RUU and now all the carrier system updates are installing.
Just a few more tidy up steps and I can return to the carrier for repair with a clear mind ... maybe!
Regards to all.
ok i have made a mess of my phone and am hopping that someone can help me sort it out. i am newbee to this.
i bought an htc m8 on sprint from ebay and shipped it over to ireland. so in order to try and sim unlock it so i could use it on networks over here i did a small bit of reading (not enough as it turns out). i unlocked the bootloader and flashed twrp recovery for sprint. i then downloaded a new rom thinking that it would also unlock my sim. i wiped my phone system before flashing the new rom but forgot to make a backup of my stock rom so there is no going back for me to that. so the way i sit at the moment i managed to get cm12 nightly to work its rooted with s-on.. i tryed using sunshine to s-off but it tells me i need to install a rom closer to stock. any rom i install wont work and i just boot back into bootloader.. i would like to get s-off if thats posable now and also install a rom that looks more like htc stock with sence on it...
thanks in advance
If you go to the HTC dev website, you can download an RUU to get back to Stock sense. Then after that you can S-Off and root and do all the other stuff you wanted
