Southwest Airlines WiFi - Nexus 4 General

Here's something to check next time you are flying in a plane with on-board WiFi. I'm not opposed to the cost, but hey - if you can use some feature free, especially on a short flight - why not?
I discovered a few Android apps worked just fine connected to their WiFi without signing in. Specifically Maps and Google Voice texting. The texting was very handy to stay in touch with folks waiting at the airport. Most apps that use internet would not work without signing up.

windows live messenger. so flaky

I installed the 10.6.34.800 build of messenger. Im using 3 network in UK. installed WLM and the Indentify as N95 cab. used to connect fast and reliable.
lately its been pain in the a$$ to connect, it connects to HSDPA, the 3g icon changes to H but then that damn busy icon just spins until it timesout.
I flash new roms on it all the time, so always installing WLM and apps. the first few times after flashing are fine, then it grinds to a halt.
I wonder if there is some file created thats jamming it or some cache file ?
other apps work fine. IE, beyondfeed, google maps,
i would blame the 3 network, but Ive installed IM+ and it connects first time, everytime to msn network, so now Im blaming this $hit WLM. When its in this mood, it wont sync either. sticks at checking internet connectivity , after it goes to H.
has anyone having / had the same carry on ?
TIA
Happens to me too. It always seems to work really well after installing it but then fades.
i had problems with live messenger also, couldn't sync or retrieve my emails, i contacted ms support and they told me that this happens sometimes for no reason. it will work perfectly for a while then nothing. i was told to sign out and then sign back in. doing this works everytime for me.
Have you tried BeeJive? http://www.beejive.com/wm6/
3 sometimes block Live Messenger, depending on what tariff or contract you have at the time. For example if you buy the £5 Internet Browsing bundle, as part of the terms of the bundle Live Messenger is blocked. I've found some of the third party softwares have the same problem with working for awhile then breaking.
A way round the problem is to setup a proxy on your home PC, but this isn't really ideal unless anyone knows of a way of proxying Live Messenger only and not Internet Explorer.
thnx, I tried only WLM and IM+ . I'll stick with IM+ until I change to O2 or find an answer. When it played up again today, I disconnected data in comm manager and put on wi-fi. It connected in seconds on wi-fi, then when I put off wi-fi and 3g back on, it connected again instantly.
its back again to sticking this evening. IM+ works ok on w-fi and 3g, WLM connects on wi-fi only unless I get lucky and keep playing about with comm manager by disabling/ enabling data and wi-fi.
i am on 3 payg for £5 a month, so it could be part of the problem. I know, before, it point blank refused to connect on 3 until I used the Identify as N95 cab.
would love to know what's causing it.
That's the problem that's been reported in other forums/posts, if you stick an orange sim in or use Wi-FI the Live Messenger works without fail (well, almost) but as soon as you use the Three sim it keeps playing up.
The fact that you can connect via Wi-Fi, disconnect and connect straight away via GPRS/3G makes it seem like all they do is block the DNS from resolving? If so it'll be a stupidly easy fix. I've heard it's some setting in the SIM that Live Messenger looks for though, which would be much harder to break.

How to keep IM apps running

How can I keep applications like skype, IM+, ebuddy etc running for any length of time? Even with settings for always on and no power save, they seem to disconnect after a while, either just after a long time, or immediately after I start using the browser or other applications. And then some, like IM+, wont conenct anymore unless I force close and restart.

Are you using Edge or 3G? As far as I know, without 3G or 3.5G, you can't talk on the phone and keep the internet connection live. YMMV.
Well I have 3G switched on, but the strange thing is that when no 3G signal is available, or it's weak and drops for a bit, then the phone switches to G (gprs) rather than E (edge), or does the phone just not display E?
Having said that, it disconnects the apps regardless of whether I'm using the phone or not

hey there)
firstly about 3G <-> Edge/Gprs switching. literally speaking edge is a piece of hardware equipment embedded into the base station. afaik not every base station has it, so in case you see G that means that either you are served by above mentioned base station or all the channels are occupied by other subscribers which rarely happens nowadays, because carriers expand the capacity of the base stations in order to provide full range of services to their subs. in other words if 3G is not available you would see G or E, you can't manually force your handy to use Edge only, it's an improved version of GPRS so to say
as for the im apps disconnets. i personally use Meebo and it never signs me off. it doesn't matter if i use the phone or switch to other apps. it runs in the background as a service until i choose to sign off manually. give it a try. if it keeps running in the background then maybe Im+ have an option to keep connection alive in its configs. otherwise it can be a bug in the ROM you are using.
Hope it helps
Thanks, I'll give Meebo a try. I guess I found the 3G/G/E thing weird cause the last 2 phones I had did change from one to the other in sequence, so I assumed that this one was skipping a stage, especially as it is slower than my last phone when browsing.

edge/gprs (2G/2.5G) does not allow you to transfer data and to use voice service simultaneously. because it uses the same timeslots as voice does. but it won't disconnect you.
Thanks again for the recommendation, very stable and overall much better than previous apps I've tried for msn. The only few times I was signed off it signed me back in automatically.

Google navigation on evo does not require sprint data?

can we get that ported?
just checking out this review of the evo

although i think gps+data is better, when i travel i don't usually have 3g so using gps only would be beneficial to me.
what do you guys think? is this guy full of it?
My guess is he doesn't know what he's talking about, or he misspoke. Unless there's about a gig worth of google maps data stored somewhere on the device, it absolutely needs a data connection to get the map data on the fly.
Wow this sounds great!
you need a data connection, either through wifi or 3g (or really slow through edge) to get the map, or the route if you are using navigation. the gps does not need data to put you on the map.
if using navigation, the map data is cached, and the gps tracks you through the path. i can load the path at home, on my connection, or in decent 3g, and then my navigation is maintained through dead zones, because of the cache. my buddy lives in total wasteland, and i drove out there a few weeks ago, with no loss of navigation at all. i had no phone signal for half of the trip

[Q] Mysterious huge 3G data usage

My AT&T Samsung Captivate has 20 to 30 MB data usage per day recently (without using Google maps or web browsing or tethering or streaming). Last time I thought it was due to Google maps, so I stopped using it. But I still have mysterious huge data transfer after I stopped using it. It will easily consume all of the 2GB cap for a month. I checked the daily usage from AT&T web site and knew that these huge data transfer happened very soon after I cut off my wifi and started to use 3G. My wifi setting is "never sleep". I use K9 email mostly, but I think I don't have that much email (20 to 30 perday, mostly no attachments) to cause this problem. My phone is rooted with very minimum modifications. I did have Market Access installed, and I am not sure if the turning on of Market Access to emulate the T-Mobile caused this problem. When the T-Mobile emulation by Market Access is turned on, I can see that the APN has been changed from AT&T to T-Mobile. I have to turn on the Background Data Sync for K9 email to sync at constant intervals.
Does any other person have similar problems? Are there anything I can do to find out which applications/services did this? Does Android has some kind of firewall to detect, identify, and stop these unauthorized data transfer?
Here is the link to similar problems in iPhone user.

There is a thread here, somewhere......someone had the same issue, and they called AT&T.....they stated that their issue was random 20-30 MB use overnight and Customer service said it was normal.

[Q] No switching to data when wifi signal weak

Here's a classic problem I've been having:
I have wifi enabled at home, and it works great. I walk out to my car parked on the street, and from here my phone still sees my wifi network, but it has a very weak connection and basically can't transmit any data. I open Google Navigation to get directions to drive somewhere, and the phone just sits there trying to find directions, or connect to server, etc.
It would seem that whenever my phone can find a weak or public wifi (which requires a login-screen and does not actually "connect" to the internet), then I essentially get no data connection whatsoever. Isn't there supposed to be a function in the phone that will automatically switch over to 3G or whatever data network is available to fill in the gaps?
This is really annoying me, as Minneapolis has public wifi everywhere, which my phone thinks is "connected" when its really not, so basically its a coin flip as to whether my data connection will work when I'm driving.
Try turning off Wi-Fi?
Of course, I do turn off wifi and the problem is gone, but I seldom remember to do it on my first time. It's most apparent and annoying when I do a voice command or voice search while driving, and then it says "connection error" and I feel like chucking my phone out the window.
If I had true 4G and an unlimited data plan, I'd probably never even bother with toggling wifi on, but as it stands now, with a 200MB plan, I really need to keep wifi on whenever possible.
Is this a common occurrence with Captivate, or Android in general? I ask because this issue just came up yesterday, and I just got owned by an iPhone4 user. We both wondered if it was going to rain soon, so we both opened our browsers, and I was stuck looking at this stupid public wifi login screen, and was putzing around with wifi, when BAM, he just shows me his iPhone with fully loaded weather radar, etc. Hence I wanted to get this issue resolved now more than ever.
Not sure if the phone has this setting but windows 7 has an option to turn auto connect to open wifi spots off. So you gave to manually connect.
