Can I flash twrp recovery using odin without root?
Sent from my GT-I9070 using xda premium

Which android version are you on? For JB,there is only in CoCore-E kernel and you can flash by using Universal Kernel Flasher or via CWM.

I've heard it's not compatible in jelly bean. I'm currently on gingerbread, but if I flash Jelly bean, is there a risk of bricking or will the recovery be as it is??

Who said that TWRP is not compatible with Jellybean? And no there is no risk of bricking your phone if you flash or update to Jellybean (but don't flash the Chinese firmware - I've heard that some people bricked their phone by doing that)... Just be sure that the firmware you will be flashing is the "right" one... I suppose that you are running the Indian Gingerbread firmware - so you can officially update to DULP8 (but backup all you data, apps, etc . first)... And yes, root it and install CoCore E 6.2 or 6.8 kernel - it has TWRP 2.5 with it...

Ok but it is written that cocore kernel 6.8-or-something version is only compatible with jb. And I meant that flasing twrp when on jb is not supported. It was written on the thread. And by the way I am on JPLK2 firmware so is it safe to flash that kernel over twrp?.. I'm relatively newb to kernels but not custom roms, so it may seem like a noob question... my apologies

No. Galaxperia is jb stock based rom. You need to be on jellybean first to flash that. Once you're on jb, you can flash with either twrp/cwm. If you flash that while you're on gb, you're gonna stuck at bootscreen.

You need to stop worrying about "bricking your phone"... as long as you know what you are doing, nothing bad should happen to your phone... and Yes you will lose TWRP... but after updating to JB you can easily root it and install CoCore E kernel with TWRP.....

Custom recovery (TWRP in your case) is on the same partition as kernel is. By flashing stock firmware kernel partition is getting wiped and new kernel with stock recovery will be instaled. First try to understand what is happening when you do something, and you will not have anything to worry about.
Againg what is already said - you can't install JB custom ROM on GB, and you can't install GB custom ROM on JB. Flashing firmware with Odin will not brick your phone, but only if you use firmware for your phone. If you have I9070P, I9070 firmware will brick it. And otherwise, if you have I9070, I9070P will brick it. Hard brick.
If you want TWRP you have to install kernel with TWRP embended in side of it. Rooting will not harm your phone, it just insert SU file that enable having root permissions.

All right. I was doubtful because in my Micromax canvas 2, all I needed to do was to wipe /system,/data,cache partition and dalvik cache and I could flash just about any custom rom, so I was a little confused on this one. Thanks

By flashing a safe kernel like Goku, Speedmod or Notecore for your stock TW ICS you'll get a safe cwm...it is up to you which one you prefer, just try them out...
As I know Speedmod is very stable (no oc/uv but battery friendly), Goku is undervolted/not oc'ed (don't know the voltage table) with a 100MHz frequency, but it makes no sence 'cause 100MHz use the same voltage as 200MHz...and finally there is Notecore with an eye more on performance than battery life (but it is good as well regarding battery)...if you decide for Notecore, flash the STD-version first (not every Note can handle the oc'ed version).
To switch from TW ROM to CM9/CM10 it is recommended to go back to GB via PC Odin to do a fullwipe from there to safely switch over to CM9/CM10. Other's only flash Abyss (a GB-kernel) without going back to GB to do the full wipe, but I read something about that there COULD be some problems at the end...you'd NEVER flash CM9/CM10 directly from TW ICS stock or custom ROM!!!
Ok, so happy flashing for you
thanks for your rich info advices bro, a few questions.
1. custom kernel will render from official ota updates?
2. will mess up my current app, data? like notecore will reverse sd n ext sd
3. needs to restore backup after flashing?

1.-> I don't think that OTA is possible for rooted devices, but via Kies (yes, this buggy software) you'll get official updates if rooted I've read...I always flash my FW via Mobile Odin. You can get the stock FW's on sammobile f.e.!
2.-> No, Notecore overwrites only the stock kernel...your apps'n'data should be safe! The built-in CWM of Notecore kernel shows the correct paths for internal and external sd!
3.-> Before flashing anything you'd allways backup your apps with TB f.e.! And before flashing the kernel, you'd wipe cache/dalvik cache (not DATA!) or use the jbroid kernel cleaning script (this wipes cache, dalvik and fragments of old kernel for a clean flash)! After a kernel flash there is no need for a restore backup if all went as it should.
When on Speedmod, Goku or Notecore you can also do a nandroid backup before flashing any other kernel (I allways do).
And just to clear things before you'll try to flash...You have a rooted device already???
ok thank you :thumbup:that clears my doubts, yes im already rooted with mobile odin but no cwm injected well m ready to try out..

Okay, here we go...:fingers-crossed:
If you stick with Notecore ( I think so, 'cause this kernel is amazing), you have to flash often 'cause Gavin (g.lewarne) allways is cooking a new creation of his outstanding kernel.

Thanks for the advice so far guys, just a few more things:
do I need to go back to a GB rom before flashing a stock ICS ROM via Odin?
I saw in this thread that says it's optional: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
And just to make sure, if I do flash back to a stock ICS ROM via Odin, it will overwrite my current kernal/root right?

You can flash straight to ics but remember you'll then be on unsafe kernel. Do wipes before flashing.
Yes, flashing stock will overwrite kernel.

Help noob

I have stock ICS 4.0.4 rom and I want to root
my Note and flash to Cyanogen ROM or paranoid rom.
1 question: Will I be able to flash using Philz Cwm6 Kernel, or should I use other Kernel?
2. Does a stock ICS rom is a peoblem flashing to Jelly Bean Cyanogen or is the kernel which is important for flashing?
P.S Sorry if I wrote something because I'm still noob on phone modding.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
just go to install a safe kernal here for ur ICS4.0.4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
my advise is do a backup using the safe kernal b4 flashing any roms it might help u in case something when wrong.
if u really don't know how to flash CM u can go find a rom manager it might be the easiest way for noob.
Flashing cm requires first flashing a cm 10 or 10.1 kernel, have a look in chasmodo's kernel repository in the stickies somewhere for cm based kernels.
Doesn't matter what rom you're on, you're right it's the kernel that's the important part.
Also if flashing cm base, make sure you perform full wipes before and after flash for best stability.

Philz has fixed th error 7 on the 3.99 release. So you can go ahead and do the formats and flash the cm rom. There is actually no need to flash the th cm kernel first.
