[Q] Stuck in recovery mode - galaxy s - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am sure that this has been covered before unfortunately I am very technically challenged. Let me briefly explain. My son has a galaxy S, his bottom 4 buttons stopped working, he downloaded an app which somewhat replaced those. He read that you can do a factory reset and it might restore the buttons. Mind you he is 14, in doing so it went into recovery mode. Now it is stuck, we have read many threads and have pressed just about every combination of buttons to try to get it out, I guess ultimately we are trying do get it into a download mode in order to reinstall software, none of which have worked, is there any way to do this without the home button, sorry if this has been rehashed many times.

stuck in where? n what button cant be use? is it bootloop?n sgs got 2 hardkey n 2 softkey + 2 vol button, so which one?
n u can do jig if hardkey broke

Ok, I have made a mistake, I looked at his brothers phone and the model is actually model sch-I500, the buttons that are not responding are the buttons across the bottom, the home, back, search and settings. The phone is currently stuck in the manual recovery mode. I can toggle up and down but am not able to select anything due to the home button not working. I have downloaded the ADB program and was able to see his brothers phone. I am still not able to see the phone that is stuck. So I know the drivers are ok. I have read that the usb debugging has to be enabled. Frankly I have no idea if it is, it does come up on the computer as a cd drive but not accessible. I do not know what a jig is. Thanks.

[Q] Captivate without 3 button combo

I've tried everything in the book, my Captivate is one of the phones that will not boot into recovery using any sort if button combo, I have to use ADB. My phone is rooted, lag fix, bloatware removed, sideloading enabled, MobileAP installed, and the Vibrant's GPS files installed, and I'm afraid that someday I'm going to need my phone in recovery/download for Odin3 because I've bricked my phone, but I wont be able too because if my phone's setup. I'm just asking, question of concept, is it possible for someone who knows what they are doing (I have no inexperience) to find the difference between a Captivate w/ the 3 button combo, and one w/o, so that I could manually enable it.

if you brick your phone, your main worry is how to get into download mode. take battery out, put back in, hold volume down+power while plugging in usb cable. can you at least do that?
As I said, I've tried every trick in the book, it doesn't work.

go to where you got it, tell them its a samsung problem, they SHOULD replace it. Before you okay the replacement try to boot the phone without the sim to recovery.
try turning off. Unplug USB. Then hold down the Vol down button and the power button. Just the 2 of them.
Then insert the USB cable 2-3 seconds after holding those 2 keys down.
That worked for me even though I used to use Vol up and down and power all together.
Hope it works for you.
we need a sticky that includes EVERY single way of recovering from all these "bricked" phones. I'm nervous that it will happen to me one day and i won't know what to do. Everyone says there is always a way to unbrick, but there sure are a lot of people that have claimed to try every possible way of entering download mode and still not happen.....and i don't want to get stuck with them!
BTW, did you try plugging your phone into the wall for awhile and then going back to trying usb and download modes?
i also have the same problem with a friends phone. i know the newer ones have issues with the 3 button combo and adb is the only way. i suppose there is a way to remove the block from boot that detects the command, maybe like a different firmware, i remembered that the stock i9000 firmware on the captivate uses only vo down + power to get to download mode but i will not want to risk the phone or it will be bricked.
i know alot of users in this forum are saying read the stickys but until u experience the problem, u will be singing a different tune. there are new captivate owners that cannot get into download mode with the 3 button combo.
i will confirm this and i have 3 other captivates that going into download mode no prolems with 2 possible 3 button combo, just only 1 that doesnot
Yes, I think someone needs to make a sticky for this. Mine works with 3 buttons, but I have seen many many users now that have 3 button disabled. I'm sure they appreciate all the suggestions, but every single person recommends the regular button methods that just don't work!
I would say, if it were me, I would stop modding it now before you f*** it up and return it to the store. I would also test the new phone in store until you get one that works.
I'm sure someone much smarter than I will figure out a software method for this. I find it hard to believe the when the phone is in Phone--!--computer mode that there is no possible way to force it into download mode via software. I know adb doesn't work, but theres got to be some other developer tool that will work.
Part of the issue is terminology.
Recovery Mode is what you use to clear cache, clear user data, or install an update.zip file by selecting "Reinstall Packages".
Download Mode is the screen with a yellow triangle and android digger icon and allows you to use odin to flash. This is the important one for recovering from a problem.
Both modes can be entered with ADB. Both modes can be entered with hardware buttons and that's where things get tricky.
On my phone, I can activate recovery mode with the steps below:
Power off
Hold both volume buttons
Press Power
Release power when I see the AT&T splash screen
Release the volume buttons a second or two after releasing power
If I continue to hold all three buttons, the phone simply boot loops at the AT&T screen with a blank flash in between. If I continue to hold the volume buttons after releasing the power button, the phone will boot normally. I have to release them to get into recovery. The phone also has to get past the AT&T splash screen before recovery will load.
I can only enter download mode with the steps below.
Phone off
Remove battery, sim, microsd
Hold volume buttons
Plug in USB
Plug in battery
The phone will then immediately enter download mode.
People need to be very careful when claiming what mode they are in and how they got there.
thanks for repeating what millions have already posted.....that doesn't work for a ton of people around here. Luckily, it does work for me, but in the case i get put in the same situation as those guys, i want to know how to get myself out. There are some people that know what they are talking about and still can't get into download mode, and yes, that is including adb reboot download
just because it works for you doesnt mean it works for everyone
I agree. I want to know just in case that happens to my phone one day. I refuse to think that without the 3 button option your phone can be hard bricked. Worst case some has to figure out a JTAG method.
And from reading a few threads, it looks like the build date is related to 3 button modes being disabled. Many users without 3 button have build dates between 8-11-2010 to 8-14-2010.

Not sure if you were responding to me or not, I simply wanted to point out the difference between recovery mode and DL mode as I see plenty of posts where someone is trying to use odin but can't get into "recovery mode". I don't doubt that there are phones that won't work with the hardware buttons.
Welp, count me in as having a brand new Captivate that will not go into Recovery or Download mode. I've tried all the suggestions and stickies, as well. Its like the phone simply ignores button presses while starting up. I bricked my phone while attempting to reverse the lagfix. No idea how I managed that. It now will only boot to the AT&T splash screen... over and over. At least, I'm able to exchange it today as I just brought it home yesterday. I'm going to try boot into recovery before I leave the store with the replacement. Although, my fear is the "bad batch" from manufacturing is actually the new "anti-xda haxor" safe guard from Samsung.

I was in the same boat as you...both phones so far won't go into recovery or dl unless adb'ed... have had the same fear as you. However... sister's captivate goes into dl mode just fine. Got them both at the same time...
Let's hope there's some workaround for this somewhere down the road.
Those of you that are missing 3 button recovery and download mode, if your phone is working do this,
go to the phone keypad, dial *#*#197328640#*#* from there it will pull the service menu, go to Version Info, SW Version, READ ALL SW VERSION
Look at the line labeled RF CAL DATE.
Mine for example is, RF CAL DATE 07-11-2010 and my buttons work.
It looks like phones with an RF CAL DATE between 8-11-2010 and 8-14-2010 have the button problems. I just want to find as much data as I can to verify or not-verify this.

Interesting. That means so far, the earliest i have seen is 8-11-2010 and yours is the latest. Looks like that was a bad week at the Cappy factory.
This is what I was talking about. I was in the middle of Odin3, going back to stock so I could take it back and do the "manufacturer defect" thing to get a new one, and out of no where, I didn't touch anything, nothing was unplugged, but my phone's screen went black, and it rebooted itself to the "phone+!+computer" screen. Anyone wanna give me some tips to maybe get them to replace my phone without looking at it, for the same "manufacturer defect" reason?
Oh, and by the way, my phone is one of the unlucky ones. So I can't boot into download mode. Period.

No I didn't but I've already bricked my phone, and it wouldn't have worked for my firmware anyways...

[Q] No really, I bricked it...

OK, I've been reading here for 6 days all manner of Captivate unbricking. Here is my story...
I picked up a Captivate on the Rogers network. I connected it to my email server (Exchange 2010) with no problems, poked around, noticed the lag, noticed the SMS time issue, then promptly rooted, installed clockwork, and then threw cognition 2.2 beta 9.1.3. Quite frankly I was shocked at how much faster it was.
Anyways, after a day of poking around, I could not get my email to my exchange server running (tried the email.pak floating about), so I actually decided I was going to go back to the backup I made of my phone using clockwork before I installed cognition. When I restored my backup, I thought I had bricked my phone.
I let it rest for a day, then came back here, and found one of the 3-4 different variations of the 4 button download mode combo that permitted me to do the 1 click restore. This restored me to the AT&T version of 2.1. It worked, but was less than desirable.
I decided that at that point I really wanted to go back to stock, so I downloaded the stock backup on the Rogers Captivate wiki page, and did the restore using clockwork. The phone has not been the same since.
When i turn it on, I get an at&t splash screen, then in about 20 seconds I get the at&t "jingle", but the splash screen stays on. I can't seem to find any key combination that will permit me to get back into download mode so I can restore using the One Click that worked for me the first time. I have tried:
1. 3 button salute with USB in first, battery out initially.
2. 3 button salute with USB plugged in *as* I was inserting the battery.
3. Power and volume down (both with and without USB, and with battery being plugged in after USB and "during" insertion of battery)
4.Power and volume up with same combo's as #3.
5. Just volume up and volume down with same combo's as #3.
In all cases Odin was running before USB connected, running as administrator. I'm running 64bit windows, but I'm sure I have the correct drivers because I did this the first time with Odin and download mode and I haven't added or changed anything. But just for arguements sake I did uninstall, and then install the drivers again.
Any combination of power and volume buttons just gives me a battery charging logo. Occasionally when holding up until the second black screen I will get a quick indication that the computer might see something, but it dissappears withing a handful of seconds showing it promptly removed.
I'm downloading the Android SDK in the hopes that when I get the normal at&t splash screen after the "jingle" that something might actually be running in the background and maybe I can adb reboot download it but I'm not holding my breath.
Anyone seen this that has managed to get out of it? I'm starting to think the "unbrickable captivate" can be bricked. Assuming it is bricked, short of taking it back, is there anyone on the internet that can jtag these and in some fashion bring back to life?
Cheers,
Tim

and download mode is easy.
1. start odin3 and have data cable plugged into the computer
2. insert proper files if needed
3. hold volume up and volume down for 2 sec (no power button needed) then insert usb cable, continue to hold volumes till either the download mode screen pops up or odin3 sees the phone(if you bork the phone bad enough you can corrupt the download mode image, i did it with the not to successfull manhatten project kernel) but despite the screen being black it very well may be in download mode.
4. start flash
5. if it doesn't work send it to me ill find a use for it
alternatively if the phone can go passed the splash screens and boots fully you can adb reboot download. just get the development kit and drivers on your pc.

just to be clear, you are holding volume up as well as volume down starting with the phone being powered down and continue to hold them after you plug in usb untill something shows on the screen?
if your phone is not seeing the volumes buttons you are one of the very unlucky few that had a problem at the most inopportune moment.
there is also a way where you hold all three buttons till the phone reboots twice, or something. let me try it and ill give more specifics.

Pull the battery, open odin, plug usb into computer, hold vol up and down, plug usb into phone still holding vol buttons, drop in battery still holding vol buttons, when dl screen pops up and yellow com port lights up in odin release volume buttons. Do not touch power button at any time

Have you tried rebooting into recovery mode instead of download mode? Stock recovery is adb-ready and you should be able to adb reboot download. Its a long shot if you're having problems using button combo to get to d/l mode, but it's probably still worth a shot at this point.
If you were able to use 3 button combos before all this happened, and did NOT have to install the 3 button combo fix, its strange you don't have access to it now... Could restoring a Rogers Cappy to AT&T stock be the problem?

Yes, that's exactly correct. I do this:
1. everything pulled (battery, USB, sim, sd)
2. Open Oden (1 click)
3. Install battery
4. hold down (and keep holding) volume up and volume down
5. insert USB cable
6. depress (i.e. don't hold) power button
Goes straight to battery charging indicator.
If I swap #6 with holding the power button down, it continually reboots while just barely showing the battery charging indicator. I've tried letting go between black screens on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th black screen. Still no android dude with the shovel.
Try all the steps you stated but not the last one where you press the power button. Don't press the power button.

Trying to get into recovery mode gets me the at&t logo and the "jingle", but no recovery mode menu to reboot, etc.
This is what I'm worried about, restoring the Rogers stock over top of the Odin 1 click restore (which is an AT&T image) has bricked it and prevents download mode from invoking.

I know, I played with adb before I bricked it. ADB needs to "see" the phone, it no longer sees it (I have three computers, all three can't see it, but they can see my friends cappy with no problems first time, every time). Same process for his phone works every time to get into download mode, but not on mine.
And yes, have tried other USB ports on the same computer, both on the mainboard, and on the front ports.
Keep the ideas coming though please, I will try every one.

There's a trick to prompt download mode through a "jig" which you can hack together for about $2 in parts and a sacrificial microUSB cable...it works on the other SGSes, but I think it should work on the Captivate as well. Never tried it personally...

[Q] Bricked my Tab...please help!

Hello
I was in the process of updating the firmware of my 'brand new' tab, when for some reason, the PC crashed and it all hung. The tab went all blank and now Odin doesnt detect the tab either. What do I do? How can I get the tab back into the mode that Odin can detect? Please help!
1. Did you put the Tab in 'Download Mode' using the Power & Vol Down buttons first?
2. Did you first terminate Kies from your PC's System Tray before running Odin?
1. Yes. After selecting the files in Odin, I did put the tab in download mode using the Power & Vol down button & Home button. That doesnt work any more. Neither does the Power + Vol up button
2. I didnt terminate Kies before running Odin. I didnt know I was supposed to do that.

If you did not terminate Kies first then that is 100% the problem.
Try it ....
Thanks for that info..but how do I get the Tab to get into download mode now? It doesnt seem to respond to anything I do! It really fits into the description of a brick now!
Some machine's also require a third button (as in on the Galaxy S) by using the Back button as well.
The tab doesnt have any other hardware buttons..just the power button and the volume control. All other buttons are sensors (like the galaxy S)...
By the way..i really appreciate your help!
No problem but I do have to shoot out for about an hour....
Re the 'Back button'. Yes, I know it's not a hardware button but just as on the Galaxy S it needs the back button to complete the Recovery/Download modes.
The Tab has been reported in some countries to also want the same.
What country are you using and I should be able to tell you if you need this third button or not.
If you can not get into Recovery/Download mode and the electric mains switch on didn't work either then yes, you really do have a problem.
Again, let me know the country specific you are using the machine on as if you end up having to send the Tab to a service centre you may find the Tab is no longer under Warranty.
Samsung got wise to the rooting as it was causing all manner of problems with returned units.
In the end they issued a newsletter to all service centres.
You can read that newsletter here ~ Samsung Newsletter to Service Centre's ~ Rooting Voids Warranty
Oops. Getting a little worried now....
I bought the tab from Dubai. Thats the reason I wanted to update the firmware. It has a lot of apps that I am not really interested in.
If you can't get into recovery or download mode you are stuffed.
I would try contacting your nearest service centre and see what they have to say.
Thanks for your help. I will keep trying....

I just described the restore button combo procedure here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9853737&postcount=12
For download mode do the same, but instead of volume up use volume down... That's it.
EDIT: saw you did that before. Sorry! Can you get into restore mode?
Let me summarize what I have done till now..
1. Plugged the tab to power via socket
2. Tried Home + Vol Up + power button - no response ..screen is black
3. Tried Home + Vol down + power button - no response..screen is black..
in both the cases I kept the buttons pressed in for minimum 30 secs..
I am NOT aware of a 'restore mode' ..could you please xplain?

That would be the mode you would have entered when step 3 would have succeeded. I think your Tab is really bricked. The scenario described is typical a scenario that can result in a brick. All I can do is show some compassion Sorry.
This is not good..not good at all!
Thanks for your help anyway...
Just got back.....
As I mentioned previously your only option now is to contact the nearest Samsung Service Centre and explain to them you tried to carry out a firmware update but the phone is no non-operative.
See what they say about it.... If you are in luck and they can't see you have tampered with the device then it should be covered under warranty.
When I contacted them here in the UK they told me if I brought my Galaxy S in they would fix it there and then... I opted out though as I could not get over to see them. I was fortunate in that the Recovery and Download modes were still working. Your case however is different, in that with out these two modes it is impossible to get the Tab activated.
I know it's not good news but honestly, providing you can get down to a centre they should be able to sort you out.
Yep, just done the same to mine also..totally dead, trying to flash JMA !
Take it back to the store you got it from and plead total ignorance, that's what I am going to do...
Thats precisely what I did...lets see if they can help...
My tab is back! They were able to revive my tab. Now to try again...

[Q] Help me turn my Captivate off!

So here is the situation:
My power button is non-functional. This happened before, and I was able to press very firmly on the power button to access a shut down menu and turn off the phone. From this, I was able to enter download mode (pressing volume button while inserting USB) and go back to stock, which surprisingly, fixed my power button. I thought this nightmare was over.
Now, my power button has stopped working again (ICS hacksung 5.0). No matter how much pressing, prodding, whatever, I cannot get the power button to turn off the phone.
I cannot find any adb commands to turn off phone.
"adb reboot download" simply restarts the phone, no download mode. (adb does recognize the device)
If I take out the battery, as soon as I put it in the phone boots up.
If I am pressing any of the volume buttons when I put the battery in, I can access recovery mode (But cannot select anything because power button is still broken)
Any ideas? I doubt my phone is still under warranty (1.4 years old) and I do not have mobile insurance.
Thanks for any help in advance
Depending on what recovery u have (cwm or ?), U can use the capacitive buttons, while in that revovery, to navigate and select the power off option.

Thats a neat tip that I didn't know about, but I can't find any option to power off? Sorry for being retarded but I have given this time I promise
cwm recovery is what I have installed atm
Reboot to CWM and Power off option may be at the bottom of the 1st screen that u come to. That is dependent on what version of cwm u have though.
Quick boot from the market, you can place a poweroff button directly on the home screen

The ICS ROMS CWM recovery doesn't have power off choice, so he can't do that.

Unfortunately the quick boot "power off" option simply froze my phone, or restarted it.
I let my battery drain so that I could get a dead phone (that part worked), but when I hold my volume buttons and plug in the USB for download mode it goes to the "battery" screen or (if both are held down) recovery. No download mode.
In recovery "key test" the power button fails to register any key press, but it is not spamming either. This seems like a hardware problem, but I am not sure how it was fixed when I flashed back to stock before if that is the case
I will next try making a download mode jig, I'll let you guys know how it goes...
My cousin had the exact same problem less than a month ago.
I see you tried reboot download through adb, have you tried it using the same command, but using android emulator from market? That worked for her phone so worth a shot.
its a far shot but odin is now available for use on the phone itself and works on our phones. maybe you can find a kernel thats had the buttons reconfigured. i know darky has one somewhere.

Thanks for this idea, when I use

#reboot download
the phone simply reboots. Same thing happens in "Quick Boot" 's "Bootloader" reboot option. This phone just seems broke as hell.
Firstly, this power button problem is a lot more common than you would think. It is most often a hardware failure - I mean the button mechanism (springs etc. just dies). Google it to see how common.
Your post suggests a clue: If just putting the battery in reboots the phone, then the power button may be stuck in the "in" position.....so it is always getting "pushed". Then anything you do would mean ht epower button is already being pressed. If this is the case, you will never get a software solution ???
Also, I absolutely do not mean to be nasty. But if you search both Q&A and General sections there are previous threads with this button problem. Many other solutions have been posted and it will be difficult to list them together.
Finally, you can actually replace - yes, replace - the button yourself. Google/you tube has it.

Samsung Galaxy S3 gt - i9305 stuck in downloading mode

Hey guys!
I'm using a rooted Samsung Galaxy S3 gt - i9305.
When I tried to open the hard reset menu by pressing the volume up + power + home button it went into the download mode and got completely stuck over there. The phone has no charge left. When I try to charge, it automatically boots up and again shows the "Downloading do not turn off target" but it doesn't get charged. If I press and hold the power button the screen goes black for sometime and then again it's in the Downloading mode. No matter whatever key combinations I use, this is what happens. Please suggest me some ways to fix this. I don't have a PC, so it would be great if you suggest me how to get my phone back without using a PC. But I do have another working phone.
Please guys help me.
Thank you.

it seems like you have something wrong with the keys circuits, you need to make a hardware check on that phone.
the volume down key and home key must be stuck(like always pressed).
No they're not stuck. I'm able to press and hold them. The phone actually responds to this, first the screen goes black and after awhile again the download mode is on.:crying:

i know you can press them, it's something in the board itself, circuits are touched or something like that, i can't explain because I'm not a good English speaker in "electronic stuff".
