I recently bought a new Sony Xperia SP C5302. Problem is MX Player crashes directly to the start screen (the one with the SONY logo) while playing MKV files, not right away, but after I'm some time into the video.
Sometimes this happens just as I start a video, sometimes when I'm midway, and sometimes it doesn't even crash on one video but crashes on the next video of the exact same kind (like two episodes of a TV series).
On the first run, it didn't ask for any codec, so I didn't install any. But after this problem, I've tried installing ARMv7 & ARMv7 NEON codecs in every combination possible. I've also tried messing around with the settings, H/W, S/W decoders, etc. Nothing solves it.
This problem I've experienced only while running MKV videos. The stock player from Sony (Movies player) runs the entire video without any problem. It has been able to run all MKV videos I've thrown at it perfectly without any problem. However, it has no support for subtitles.
An even greater problem is, not only MX Player, but other Android players like DicePlayer, BSPlayer, MoboPlayer, all of them crash in the exact same manner as MX Player does, while playing MKV files. I've tried them all, with and without the respective ARMv7 codecs, wherever available, in both H/W and S/W modes.
Since the stock player can play the same MKV files that crash MX Player, without any problem, I assume it's not a hardware defect, but some software or codec problem.
Please advise what to do...

Ofcourse its not a hardware problem. I having MX and Dice Player. I am a movie lover. always watching my favourite movies in my SP only. All are 720P and 1080P. I did not faced a single problem like u mentioned.
Try to update ur Phone. In video players make sure u activated hardware decoding options..
And yea stock video player is good. But it have some minus points too.. Did u try new VLC beta?
If ur using . 211 firmware means update it to . 284

You're most probably right. Right now, I'm on .211. It'll probably solve itself once I upgrade it to .284. I'll do it within 20 days, since I don't have access to a reliable PC and internet connection right now.
And for all who asked, the player crashes while playing MKV videos of any resolution, not just 720p or 1080p. Foot example, I first encountered this problem nearly a month ago while watching episodes of one TV show, in 720x404 resolution (from one source). And right now, I'm facing the same problem again while watching episodes of a different TV show, in 624x352 resolution (from an entirely different source). The file is H.264 / AVC / MPEG-4 AVC / MPEG-4 part 10, and frame rate is 23.97602.
Thank you all for trying to help. I'll upgrade to .284 within the next 20 days, as soon as I go home, and get my hands on a reliable PC and internet connection. I'll monitor my posts here and in the MX Player forum in the meantime. So long...

Guys, i have a problem with my i9001.
My phone is rooted and i installed the gpu "new" drivers from the development page. I have upgraded from 2.3.3 that comes default when i buy it to 2.3.5 through KIES, not through ODIN, so it's with vodafone ****s or whatever.
Anyway, the problem is the following:
I want to watch some mkv .720p tv shows on it (like dexter, supernatural, etc) and i tried with a couple of players but every single player will decode the mkv in "SW mode" not hardware, so it won't play properly and it will lag. I tried with bsplayer, mx video player, mobo player pro and even DICEPLAYER (the full version).
So, any ways of playing 720p smooth ? i guess it's because of Adreno 205 which is weaker than Galaxy S gpu.
Come on, 130 views and no replies? sorry for double posting.
Oh, and i didn't installed any "speed" scripts like adrenaline shot or whatever.
Fact is i just bought the phone and i don't want to lose my warranty already. Do i lose it when i install adrenaline shot for instance ?
Update: My actual ROM is I9001BUKP2, which is Vodafone branded and my phone is simlocked (most likely).
Can this be the problem ?
Update 2: Very weird thing happened. I put an episode from The Walking Dead, 350 mb .avi to run with MX Video Player and surprise, even .avi LAGS in hardware decoder, but i'm lucky that MX Video Player got S/W Decoder FAST and it played almost smoothly (95%, still little fps drops).
After that, i tried with an episode of Grimm, this time 720p, .mkv but WEB-DL (even more better than normal 720p releases of groups like IMMERSE, CTU, etc) and the HARDWARE DECODER went AVAILABLE this time, but it lags terribly. I tried with S/W Decoder FAST and lol, it worked almost smoothly.
So, what the hell is the problem ?
Could it be my I9001BUKP2 firmware ? it's official, updated with KIES, i guess it's the same as this one on XDA.
bumpy ^^ ........
still bump .... come on :|
Update: I am now with XXKPS 2.3.6, still the same problems. MKV 720p are laggy, and every single .avi movie is laggy in hardware decoder as well. only softare decoder can decode avi movies to be smooth, but 720p still be laggy.
hey guys .. i curently have feamod v.1.3 based on CWM 5 0 2 7 .... what change if i flash 1.4 ? i use cranium RC7 update 1 with kernel v6 cranium 1900 ghz
but i wanna flash broodrom RC2 final but i don'w know what kernel to use... is v6 1900 cranium ok wit broodrom ?
Well then, how about re-encoding your movies using e.g. xmedia recode or SUPER or whatever? Choose a lower resolution. That's a phone, don't expect it to play HD content - on the small screen that does not make any sense at all.
Well, for others it works perfectly, only i seem to have problems. And anyway, samsung is reporting that this phone can run 720p movies without a problem.
@arialth, GET THE **** OUT.

same issue here, i tried a 720p movie on my i9001 and it used SW decoding in mx player.
I noticed one thing though, after installing mx, it didnt ask for any codec to be installed, i expected it to ask me to install the ARM7 codec??
Same problem here, the moment you want to watch a 720p mkv video you can't use HW decoder.
I am using 0.1.0 cm10 ROM from Ivendor with 3.0 Kernel.
Use VLC, it supports hardware decoding of all media formats.

Already tried that, I've done some search around and I think it just can't handle a 720p mkv.
Bear in mind that the I9001 has a better CPU but a worser GPU, so it's possible the I9000 is able to handle 720p mkv better.

Also, Samsung does indeed report that the device can run 720p movies in mp4 or whatever format.
Seeing as they're own video player doesn't have a mkv codec it is possible there just isnt mkv hardware support.
Sorry for starting a new thread, but I searched and couldn't find answers.
I'm trying to play 720p mkv files and they are all stuttering in my CM7 kang and etana kernel. Youtube 720p videos are ok, but the only way I could find to play my files was converting then to 640x480 (someone wrote that in some thread).
Is there any other way to play these files?
Maybe not enough ram. Tuurn off some apps

The built-in player (and all other players usig "hardware acceleration") works for some videos, for some others software-decoders work (mx player has a pretty good one).
BUT, you will not be able to play everything on this phone. "Hardware decoder" only supports up to a certain specification and "software decoding" is limited by the processor (overclocking might help a _little_ here).

Weird, I have same rom and kernel right now, plays ok even in HDMI the only problems this have is with 1080p with high profile, or some main (see bitrate), simple profile plays good.
when i play 720p mkv files i get a little stutter and audio-video sync problems. A 720p mp4 files plays perfectly though.
Hi. I Flashed my note a month back with the Checkrom v5 Rom, suddently my stock video player is unable to play MKV files and the MX video player can only play them in SW mode. I tried to reflash, and everything seemed fine at first but after a day I exprienced the same problem, now im thinkin maybe I must go back to stock Rom, its really annoying cuz i liked that ROM, any suggestions?
Yea I noticed this as well, didn't bother me too much to play it in SW on MX but I could never find a fix for it. I just moved to ICS and was done with it lol.
Try BS Player Light or Dice Player - both are capable of playing mkv containers HW accelerated, handling dual audio, embedded subtitles and play HD content.

You where on to something here
Spent half the day installing uninstalling various players and their versions.
Mobo player lagged on .flv files
Rockplayer lagged on large .flv or couldnt use hardware encoding.
MX Player latest version kept giving me FC
then i read about MX Player v1.5 being stable and compatible for CM7 so i gave it a try... it works FLAWLESS!! and it even Hardware Encodes when it needs which none of the others did.
thx to those that recommended.

I use a combo of bsplayer lite and mx player. Best of all, they're both free! Grab em, on the play store. install the arm v7 codecs if you're having trouble playing files.
I like to use MX player. easy to navigate to fast foward, to increase/decrease volume while driving. hehe
Have You Tried QQPlayer??

I still recommend you Mobo player.. Don't use "Mobo Player Pro"..
Go to settings and set it to default "Soft Decoding"..
I myself played many .flv files of more than 1GB data......
Because I love watching movies on our device...

bs player is good player..it performs better than rockplayer.those formats which are not supported by the stock player ar played with softwaredecoding.thats why at higher resulutions those players can not give good performance.i've tried h.264 hd file it only gives 20 to 21fps..but the mp4 version gives 31fps..only reason is hardware decoding instade of s/d..by the way rockplayer can play any format..
Sent from my CSL-MI410 using XDA
QQPlayer is capable of playing any video file extension..its a free tool available for download in market.

I am using Zeus 6.11n. All videos are out of sync about 0.3-0.4 sec. Am I the only one with this problem and is there a fix?
out of sync when... watching at phone? transfer and watch at pc/laptop? uploaded and watch at youtube??
One thing I can tell you is, I don't know why but when I upload directly to youtube it say something like "sound could be out of sync" or something like that... so before I upload a video I use a video converter to make it avi or mpg or whatever [original video file is 3gp] and the upload it to youtube and is good to go

Every video I watch on my phone is out of sync. I watch it on my PC and it is fine. When I transfer it to my phone it goes out of sync. Even youtube videos are out of sync.
What video player are you using? Are you using a hard-decoder or soft-decoder?
I had the EXACT same problem when i was trying to watch a highly compressed mkv through moboplayer and mx video player.
I trie using MX Player, Mobo Player and even the stock LG Player, using HW decoding. I get the exact same result. I tried the same video on my Optimus ONE but there it works fine. I will try software decoding and edit this post.
EDIT: It is the same using software decoding.

Try to reflash your device and if it doesn't work download a fresh patch of the rom again and flash it............
Tried reflashing. Even tried flashing other rom. It seems to have fixed itself when i flashed cyanogenmod RC1. Every rom based on the stock one seems to have that problem.
Try moving them to the internal memory as sometimes sd cards do that (especially slow ones such as the one included with the phone) see what happens and report back. Try withthem on the sd of the other phone u have and see also. Last but not least try with lower res vids to see what happens. If all fail send it to lg and see what they reply.
I had similar problems before changed my sd card with class 10. Also dumped Mobo player and now use BS player. No problems now.
I have bad sync in every long videos recorded with my OB in any rom.
SD problem maybe?
