Inaccurate/Wrong Reception Bars/dBm - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

I am currently using @albinoman887 's CyanogenMod 10.1.2 ROM for my Velocity and the 4G LTE performance is fairly bad. On SpeedTestdotnet I am getting about 15 Mb/s download (and 60 KILObytes/s on 3G).
Could this be connected with the incorrect display of reception? I get a string of impossible numbers of dBm (with approximately 220 ASU) and the bars icon always shows 3 bars.
I'd post this on the development thread for the ROM, but I'm not allowed to, yet.

So now I am trying the latest build of the PACman ROM and am still getting the reception error. I have seen in the developer thread that some people get "no" reception. albionman887 I think this is connected to your CM part of the ROM in PACman also.

Now using the Dirty Unicorn 4.2.2 ROM. Same problem. I'm really unhappy about this as I prefer seeing dBm rather than bars.

I have now tried flashing back to ICS Borked 3.7 and did a clean flash to PACman. Same problem.

They all use the same device tree... and kernel.. All bugs run throughout each rom.

[Q] Awful 3G signal after flashing CM7 Kangaroo

I flashed Kangaroo CM7 from General section.
After I flashed it, my 3G signal is very very weak.. It is only one little bar or not even one. When I go out my signal gets better but not as good as it was.
I've flashed tens of modems, I tried Insanity, Stock JVZ, Custom ROM JVZ... still same 3G problem. I also tried to change signal type, but it didn't help.
I don't know how can I fix that. Maybe I have scew'd somewhere I don't know.

CM 7 and 10 always lost signal

Hi all,
I'm always losing cellular signal when using CM 7 or 10 roms.
And I will not be aware of the problem until I try to make calls, then the signal indicator will turn to an "X". Which means I could be missing incoming calls.
It doesn't matter which baseband I use. This problem always occur as soon as on the same day I install the rom.
I don't have this problem however as long as I'm using stock roms (30A, 20S, 20Q, etc), even if the rom is from other regions.
I'm from Singapore and having the signal problem on M1 and Starhub. Would really like to use CM roms and appreciate if any one can help.
Thank you.

Use SU1120 BB
OK. I have flashed my BB to the SU1120 as suggested. Will monitor from here.
Thanks.
Update: With Temasek's Kang, the phone has been working well for the first 36 hours since flashing. However, i have been having signal lost a few times already today but the signal always manage to come back after some times.
So I guess SU1120 is better than all other BB that I've tried, though signal lost still happens. Looks like I have to stick to the stock rom with stock kernal.
Those in Singapore, what BB are you using with CM7 / CM10? Do you encounter signal lost?

Odd signal issues Atrix HD

I recently flashed the (Unofficial) PAC Man ROM over night, and noticed my signal bars were blank. I have 4G (It says sometimes) but when I check my signal strength, it's 0 dBm 99 asu. It can see my Network, says I'm in service, and gives me my IMEI number. However, my phone number is unknown. I'll upload screenshots, and will answer questions (Obviously) if need be. (Note: I can't post in the dev forms, as I don't have enough posts, thought I have PM'd Skeevy about the bug. ROM runs fine otherwise ) Thanks in advance.
Well it's noted as a known bug in almost all 4.2 roms so...

Hm. Read the PACMAN rom bug list and it didn't show up and that's what I'm using.. Oh well. 3G works, I get signal, but my phone number doesn't show up, so eh. I can live with it I guess,
I am one of those folks that will keep flashing for latest stuff cause I like the bleeding edge...
I did have a problem today that all my roms I flashed to had no service. No matter what I did... No bars and WIFI couldn't even be turned on.
End result fix was to flash back to ATT stock US rom through RSD. Then putting CWM back through fastboot and then my customs worked fine. I'm sure it was something dumb I did that caused it, but with an unlocked bootloader, I have no fear of trying anything

Honestly, I think it has something to do with the way 4G LTE is encoded with the ROM. I've flashed stock, gone back and installed CWM and re-flashed PAC and still had the issue. But It still works, I just don't get signal bars, with 0bdm and 99ASU all the time so yeah. 3G and HSPA+ work flawlessly. If I have HSPA+ and 3G I'm fine lol.
Now that GPS is pretty much figured out, which is what I've been focused on, I'll start looking at the stock build.prop and and compare it to PAC's. Should give me some insight to the 4g issues.
I wasn't aware that all 4.2 roms had the signal issue. I see it on PAC maybe once a day and its gone within 5 minutes. I'm not 100% positive, but I think it has to do with wifi. When ever I notice a wifi issue like it not connecting as fast as it should, sure enough the grey icons follow.
Went to Taco Bell last night, saw their wifi connection but didn't connect. Got home, home wifi was slow to connect and they grays. Makes me wonder if there's an issue with the wifi queue or the phones "which internet do I use?" queue.
//Was in drive thru line for a while for 3 Beefy Crunch Burritos...in the store, the guy upfront of me in queue had an 18 item order. Looked like he was leaving the grocery store with all those Bell bags. I thought, dang, his gut's gonna like him in the morning.

Last line made me LOL.
The issue just seems to be 4G and LTE. WiFI on your PAC rom seems runs wifi great, but sometimes it disconnects (very rare for me, but I think it's for everyone in my house, we have quite a few WiFi hogs, lol). I'll just keep flashing your new roms as they come out, and hopefully it'll be fixed. Not to big of a deal if it isn't lol.
signal strength
Did you compare signal rating from your stock ROM to custom ROM?

If you have an older router, try changing the WiFi frequency from auto to 2.4ghz -- fixed my WiFi disconnect issues right up. Also, if that doesn't, then set up a static IP for your phone since, in my experience, static connects a lot faster. That's not really a bug as it is a hardware issue (an I can't afford a new router issue).
As for signal. Can't test LTE\4G. Not available in my town. 3G works fine and doesn't have any disconnect or signal issues. I can suggest to try different modems from the various fastboots.
Its just that the custom Roms don't "see" the 4g signal is all... So it gives a no signal bar. Its different from the connected bars and fully connected bars that still show signals.

[Q] Nexus 7 3G: mobile data connection dies while downloading large files

As the title says, my tilapia's mobile data (3G/HSPA) connection occasionally stops transferring data while in the middle of a large download, whether it's a simple file downloaded from a browser, a Play Store application or a YouTube video. Turning airplane mode on and off always fixes it. (Clarification: the signal doesn't drop, just the data. The signal indicator stays blue for a while after the connection drops, then turns gray.)
It doesn't happen on all ROMs. It happens on Purity 5.5.0, AOSP 4.3 (tested with Androguide.fr's ROM), CyanogenMod's August 7th nightly, IceColdJelly (July 23rd), RootBox (August 5th, unofficial build) and others I'm forgetting, but Paranoid Android is immune (3.67 and 68 tested). I haven't updated my radio or bootloader to the 4.3 ones.
I haven't tried using alternative kernels yet, so it might be that. (Edit: it's probably not the kernel, just flashed M-kernel mr1 and the problem is still there.) In the mean time, if someone has any ideas about what's going on...

Well i know its a PIA but if i were you i would try going back to stock and see if you still experience the same issues! It could be ROM based issue your seeing on certain roms. Also one kernel that works PERFECTLY wont always work for another person with the same device. Also have a look at what radio is in use for your device. I own the WiFi version. But just like your smartphones id assume the tilapia has a radio/modem that gets flashed during ROM installs.
First thing is see if STOCK does it. IF it does id assume a failing 3G radio in your unit sadly!

Updating Modem Firmware on Oneplus 3t

Hi guys,
I just flashed the latest Omnirom and Magisk om my OP3t. I noticed that my cell phone reception is worse than with OOS 4.5.1.
I was wondering if I can resolve this with flashing a modem firmware?
I found this XDA forum page that lists several modem firmwares: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/how-to/firmware-modem-collection-flashable-zips-t3565535
Can I just flash these over my Omnirom ROM? Are there any other things I should think about?
Thank for your help!
That's an outdated forum. Flash the latest Open Beta FW zip from this thread.
There shouldn't be any risk, but it's highly doubtful that your reception would be better just because you updated your FW.
On Oxygen OS the signal icon is tampered, the shown signal strength does not represent the real value.
This is why with all custom ROMs the signal may appear to be weaker than with OOS

That is a good point, one shouldn't assume reception based on the signal "bars", as they are not standardized by any means, and really don't mean much of anything.
User should look at the dB reception indicated in Settings>About phone>Status>SIM Status
Even then, I think I saw a post where someone claimed that OP meddles with the dB numbers reported?
Also, I'm not too familiar with OmniROM. Some custom ROMs flash firmware automatically, some don't. So it may be worth looking into, whether this particular ROM includes firmware or not.
But either way, if it's the latest OmniROM, and it included firmware, it should be an updated modem. If OmniROM doesn't include firmware, than it didn't touch the modem, and it was the same as before (4.5.1 modem I presume, since you mentioned it). So I'm confused why you think the modem is "worse" than before.
Thanks for all the answers all!

I assumed because I wasn't aware that the bars were not standardized and because 'fewer bars are filled' with Omnirom than with OOS. Furthermore, I wasn't able to receive phone calls yesterday at the office, which I am not sure I experienced when I was on OOS.
I have been looking at my dB for the cellular connection. Are there any pointers on what is considered good/acceptable/bad? I found these numbers on an older Howard Forum post, but I am not sure if they apply for all types of networks (GSM/H+/LTE/etc):
-105 to -100 = Bad/drop call
-99 to -90 = Getting bad/signal may break up
-89 to -80 = OK/shouldn't have problems, but maybe
-79 to -65 = Good
Over -65 = Excellent

Also, I flashed the Open Beta 25 - Oreo Modem Firmware, but it did not improve my reception unfortunately.
Thanks!

I've seen similar types of charts. Can't say how accurate they are. What I can say, is take them with a grain of salt. Right now I'm getting -109 dB at my work. Which is a location I consider good reception. Never get problems with voice calls in or out, and the data speeds are decent.
That is a good point about whether the charts apply to all the network types (GSM, HSPA, LTE). Since they are different network technologies, it makes sense that they might have different dB parameters about what constitutes good vs. bad.
