Finally, a viable messaging solution for android. The current version of Meebo for the android platform(V6) surpasses the quality of BuddyMob. I(along with others) have confirmed that there are no disconnects while phone is asleep, no forced closing, and no lost incoming messages while phone is asleep. Also, the best part is messages are received almost instantly without using sms. Pure data. I am sooo excited I could cry. Now I can say my G1 is finally a competititor in the pda market. Thank You Meebo!!!!!!!!!

Also, please post your results here. Maby the developer will see our support and improve the app.
Interesting. I had a few issues with Meebo that made me switch to BuddyMob instead. I will definitely check the new version of Meebo out.
Ugh. Unfortunately it still won't remember my ICQ UIN/password between sessions. I really can't be bothered to type that in manually every time I log on. It's a pity, because Meebo does seem to have improved a lot in other areas, like how it's now listing my contacts' nicknames instead of their UIN's.
after 2 days of use, I noticed the battery life is better with meebo.
mannyb, have you added this comment to the market? The dev might add the feature if he/she sees enough request for it. I noticed my requested features were added.
Also, for the U.K. users who are upset about the builtin IM missing some networks. This is a good free solution. If we get enough ppl supporting the dev this app would ROCK.

But the built in IM client really does suck, IMHO. Hard. I have a couple hundred buddies. (I use it for work and for play..) and have multiple accounts with multiple groups and I find that it takes forever to load, then populate with buddies... plus, the stock apps (as well as most of the other IM clients) insist on showing empty groups. So, I've got 15 empty groups showing...
Meebo combines all buddy lists in one, it's SUPER quick to load, can have more than one of each account signed in plus empty groups are ignored. I'm sold.
Plus, the built-in IM app uses text-message credits for both inbound and outbound IMs (with the exception of GTalk).
If Meebo would add Facebook chat to the Android client then this would be a no-brainer.

It has support for Facebook chat you just have to first set it up on meebo.com and then once you sign on with your Meebo account on the G1 your Facebook contacts will show up. I have tried it and it works well,.

get an account on meebo.com and set up your facebook/aim/yahoo/msn/icq/myspace/etc... accounts. Then, sign in under "Meebo" on the android client and they're all there.

Palringo PTT looks to be coming but is not in the alpha release yet (icons there). It's coming along nicely, but far from complete. I love that with Palringo you log in to one Palringo account and bam, all your other accounts come up and log in. Pretty hawt.

Meebo does that too. Choose "Meebo" from the drop down list on your phone and any IM networks that you have associated with the Meebo web account auto-log in. I currently have MySpace, Facebook, G-Talk, 2 yahoo accounts, AIM, ICQ and MSN.

DO any of these apps allow for status updates in aim?
There is so far a HUGE issue with Meebo. There is NO status updating. You cannot go "Away" or "Idle" or any of that, nor can you post your own status. To me this is a major drawback that needs addressing. I tried BuddyMob, it didn't really work very well. Ill be waiting on an update for Meebo. (there was actually one today, but did not address the problem at hand.)
So you can in fact utilize facebook and Myspace messenger within meebo? How does this IM application effect battery life? Is it push messaging or is the application just constantly polling a server?
I haven't noticed any major battery draw while using it... I don't always have it on. As for changing statuses, I just don't think that's a big issue for me. It I'm not available for chat, I just turn the thing off. The only issue I have regarding meebo is the notification is always on even after I've logged off, saying I'm still "signed on with x number off accounts."
@gimpeh - yes, sign on via the website and create a meebo account and you can add facebook and myspace as well as yahoo AIM, ICQ, etc... . Then, on the G1, dont sign on to each account (yahoo and aim, etc..) just signon to "Meebo" and you'll signed onto all of your accounts at once.
So far, none of the IM clients - online or real apps - can handle being in an environment where they lose signal on a regular basis. My office building has scattered signal inside for T-Mobile, and if I walk to another office, I'm bound to lose signal for atleast 15-20seconds. None of the IM clients can handle this. The builtin GTalk is the best, by far though. It's atleast able to reconnect after losing signal. But I will leave Meebo running and come back 30min later (After walking around the building a little bit) and it will ALWAYS be disconnected.
Is it really that hard for the developers to poll whether there is signal every few minutes and try to reconnect? It seems like the apps that "claim" to do the polling tend to give up after a certain number of minutes.
In my opinion, all IM apps should continue to poll for an active connection until the radio is shut off. I know it would be a battery drain to a certain degree after a while, but I know many people who are in my situation where they lose signal for very short amounts of time several times a day.
I've been pulling my hair out looking around for how exactly to have emails pushed to the G1. I have both K9 Email for Yahoo and the stock Gmail app for Gmail that I'm trying to get it pushed on.
How the hell do I get this working?? I see no options ANYWHERE to do it, but upon Googling it, everyone seems all happy and excited that it -can- push emails. But, NONE OF THESE PLACES EXPLAINS HOW! I don't care if they're glad it can or not, I want to know HOW to do it. Google themselves don't even mention it.
Can somebody please explain how to push emails before I lose my mind and possibly all my hair??

what the hell are you talking about?
You automatically get all emails from the account you registered your g1 with pushed to your device if u did not manually disable it in settings. Via thhe mentioned G(oogle)Mail application!
You can also use the suppiled email app that comes pre installed on the phone. Works with all the major emails except those from an exchange server.
That mail isn't exactly pushed, from what I understand pushed emails to be. Pushed is immediately sending a notification once email is received, the one in Google mail and K-9 has timed when it checks the source email.
Not even SMS are really PUSHED to your device. It is how it is. Use it and shut up.
How shall it technical work to push something to your device ? It is impossible .. The intervalls for sms/calls are just much shorter.. thats why mobiles drain so much battery even in standby.. and the intervall for gmail to check new emails is shorter than 1minute .. i dunno how much is it but it's near to instant

The GMail client does not "check" the source email, it uses a proprietary version of IMAP IDLE (push) technology. It is indeed pushed to your phone, when "Sync" is enabled. However, K9 and the stock email app do not provide IMAP IDLE support at this time, so there is no way to set that up. K9 has it on the To-Do list. I don't know about you, but the instant my account that is set up with the Gmail client on the phone gets an email - my phone notifies me, sometimes it is faster then a desktop client. And, I assure you that it is not constantly sending out requests checking in for mail on the server, that would be poor coding on Google's part and waste a lot of their resources.
So, to answer your concerns directly.
The GMail client IS what is referred to as "Push" email.
The K9 and stock Email clients are currently not capable of "Push" email.

How about doing some reading before sticking your foot further into your throat.
IMAP IDLE - how it works.
It is very efficient.
"This means that an active client will always be kept up to date. The IDLE command deals with the situation where the client has no more requests to make. The server responds to the idle command when there is a new message (or messages) which indicates to the client that there are new messages. "
as i said it .. the g1 "pings" the server all the time ..

You're still looking for a clue, almost getting there
In case of push mail your phone does NOT poll for new mails: The mailserver will notify your phone when new mail is available. Yes your phone sends an idle command, but nothing happens after that: The connection is just left open and when there is new mail the server will send it.

I think you are grasping the concept, but the semantics are lost on you.
It works like this:
1. Client connects to server, does it's initial check-in, and handles new requests.
2. Client sends IDLE command to server, telling the server that it is still active, but not actively sending requests.
3. Client sits IDLE (no more data is transmitted from client to server unless an action takes place on the CLIENT requiring transmission - ie, an email is sent).
4. Server receives a new message.
5. Server sends a packet to the Client (knowing where it is located based on the open - yet IDLE connection).
6. Client responds to the packet and is subsequently transmitted the message.
See how many times I used the word IDLE - get the picture? As long as you know what IDLE means, you will understand how efficient this is. Here is a quote from that page I posted a link to:

Proxin - I believe (although I could be wrong) what is going on is that you don't have the Gmail as your primary mail account - the one that everyone sends email to.
I only lately began to use Gmail. So, I have three email addresses that are set to forward to the Gmail account. The time it takes for these email to be forwarded and received by Gmail is the only lag I experience at all.
If you are using Gmail's "fetcher" feature to fetch email from other accounts... I have seen up to 30 minutes before each "fetch." So, it can take awhile. In which case I suggest that you go to any primary accounts that you have and set them to forward your email to your Google account and see if that decreases the delay.
Touchdown by exchange is the best email push app on g1 currently. But its not free . if u wanna sync contacts u can do that during the trial period
I just got my g1 Monday and all my contacts were on a server and I was discouraged that I could sync google or my g1 contacts with the exchange server. I then tested every app in the marketplace i could find and couldn't get any to sync contacts except Touchdown.
ExchangeIt worked fine after I figured out how to use it. Most of the other apps only work for Microsoft Server 2007 so they weren't compatible.

Touchdown rocks, and is worth the money.
Even the Exchange support in the upcoming cupcake is lame, as ig works with a lame email client.
I'm not sure if anyone else has come across this, but I use a POP email account on my desktop, and I also have it set up in K-9 Mail so that I can receive my email wherever I go. What I've noticed though, is that 95% of the time, it says (on my desktop computer) that there's already an open connection/something else is already using it. Occasionally if I close K9 with the Advanced Task Manager, I can download my messages.
But it seems as though its sending some keepalive or something. I have my e-mail to check every half an hour, but I know for my e-mail(Telus)..sessions time out after 10 minutes.
Anyone know if there's any way to get around this more efficiently, or if there's an alternate email application that handles these connections better?
I know that if I switch to IMAP, it works fine..the only problem is that Outlook doesn't store a copy of the messages locally with IMAP.

when i first ran the app it asked me for my phone number, i put in a bogus one out of curiosity and my push notifications still worked.
so needless to say, I LOVE THIS APP!!!!!!!
this is looking nice. a few bugs, like it keeps asking me if i want to add another account... and i don't have another to add but i guess its nice it asked ;p Should be nice once it develops.

Yeah, read about this service last year. Interesting to know it is developing an Android client.
However, I can't be the only one who thinks that for a true smartphone platform like Android, it makes little sense (and indeed adds unnecessary uncertainty and security issues) to be routing mail through an intermediate party when there are applications that can connect directly to the mail server.
i looked around thier website but i didnt see anything about thier email being routed through a third party, where did you get that info?

As far as I know, all of the apps you just listed DO use SMS for push e-mail. That is the main reason people with Data plans that don't include messaging cannot use the stock GMail app.
The old "PULL" method is where the mail app reaches out to the server every so often and downloads any e-mails if it finds them. This of course wastes battery life since it does this polling regardless.
The "PUSH" is different in such a way that the server sends specifically-formulated SMS's that are intercepted by the GMail/iPhone Mail/other mail apps. These apps then prevent these SMS's from showing up as SMS, and instead they reach out and grab the e-mail from the server. This saves battery life by eliminating scheduled polling, while at the same time provides that "instant" e-mail feel.

The GMail app does not use SMS to push, it can maintain a TCP connection, as does most other "push" type applications.
If Seven does not use SMS to push then mea culpa. However, from the looks of their website, all data still has to route through their servers.
i read through thier privacy statement on thier website. is sais they dont store any of your data. altough it dosnt say it does not route through...

They ARE the THIRD PARTY
you can compare it simliar to how blackberry works. everything is routeted through blackberry's servers before it hits your phone. blackberry being the third party. that's why when you sign up for a BB plan, u get BIS or BES, it all goes through blackberrys servers. It isnt like microsoft's direct push where the connection is only from the server to your phone, no third party. I used seven when i had WMO, it was ok, it doesnt use SMS.
you download an app to your phone and you connect the app to seven's servers. this keeps a constant connection and when you get email, seven willl alert the app which notify you and download the email. it was ok, but the app was very laggy and it was a major battery killer.
I have 3 basic issues with the phone, which I otherwise love. Here they are:
1 - The e-mail client cannot in-line forward e-mails. It attaches the forwarded message as a .eml file. This is especially annoying as Android cannot open .eml attachments. So essentially, if someone using and android phone forwards an e-mail to my android phone, I can't read it.
2 - Mail is never "marked as read" in the mail client unless either a refresh or more mail activity occurs. In other words, if I get an e-mail and read it on Outlook, it will stay unread on my phone. This leads to constant notifications of new mail, which I've already read unless I manually clear it. Note that the Gmail client does this fine, when mail is read on the computer, the phone knows and marks it read on the phone, eliminating the notification.
3 - I would really like to pull down the notification tray from the lock screen. Is this possible?
SO would I be able to fix these issues and would probably be willing to root, if rooting would fix them.

1 - Mail client doesn't change if rooted, so it'll do exactly the same until someone fixes the source and recompiles it. In that case you'll need to root to use it.
2 - This is the result of mail protocols, not anything to blame the phone / client for. It'll happen the same if you use 2 computers. Gmail client works because it uses push notifications from server. If I remember correctly, Exchange server also pushes when connected, so I suppose default mail client would work the same way if connected to Exchange server. Again, rooting won't help.
3 - I don't know of such mod. The only thing which is close, is disabling the lock screen completely - and for this (again, if I remember correctly, you can check it by searching either the forum or just google) you have to have root.
Also, you can try 3rd party mail clients for (1) and partial (2) solutions (refresh once in a defined while). I don't know any, since I've never used the mail client, but there might be some which address those problems.
