Selling apps to other developers/publishers? - App Stores

I am moving on to other projects (some will be Android apps) and I want to find a good home for two of my apps. They are simple, but found over 51,000 people who downloaded them and 12,000 use them actively. I listed them on Apptopia, but I would like to know if there are other places I could list them on? Could you share your experiences? What did and did not work for you when you tried to sell/transfer your app?

Apptopia doesn't work. App prices there are too high.. Interetsed in selling your apps directly to me? msg me.

Friend of mine, tried sell his really popular game with 1-5kk downloads, and failed, because most of companies purchasing sources/apps offer way to low offers, at least in his opinion, compare to possible monthly revenue, example from advertisement, also I heard rumours, that it might not be fully safe - for developers.

money managing app

does anyone know of a top money managing app that does NOT ask for my bank/credit accounts? i want basically an offline to manually add myself the amounts. i had http://www.ascendo-inc.com/Money.html for the longest time on my blackberry and still use the desktop version but cant sync it to my android because its not made for android. im looking for a replacement that is basically the same thing. would be a great bonus if it has a desktop version also! the market has really failed for me in categorizing and sorting and i have had way better results by asking the users here.
Its called EasyMoney. Great UI and a ton of functionality.
The dev is responsive and he promised me the features i requested.
Its $10. You can purchase a license through paypal if you don't have access to paid apps. The price might sound a little high, but trust me, its well worth it.
Unlimited accounts with what ever currency you want, transfer between accounts, recursive transactions, graphs and so on.\
A 10 day trial is available i think. Go for that at first.
ok for that price its way better then 30 and addtional 10 for updates on my old blackberry. will try them and hope they can provide a desktop client in the future. thanks for the reply!

[APP] auto-mate first showing of features

Hi all
I've been a member of XDA for a while (have a hero and been on the villanrom builds since they began). But I am a developer full time and so I have decided to start in Windows Phone 7. I know silverlight, I know .NET so why not.
I have started the company 'Infinite Monkey Theorem' and this is a showing of the first application.
auto-mate. This app allows you to record your cars stats at each fuel up and service to allow you to view statistics about your cars. This app will also allow you to setup service types (months or miles) and the app will schedule them for you taking into account your mileage per year. MOT and Tax renewals are stored and show when they are close.
The reason for this app is this: I drive 24,000 miles / year which means that I need to maintain the car more than just a yearly service, this app will tell me when I need to change my oil or have a minor/major service based upon the miles I drive per year and the miles I'm doing recently allowing me to budget for it accordingly.
This app syncs to the cloud so you can look over all the cars you are monitoring from your office and export the information or book a service.
This app is in beta at the moment, it is not feature complete as I need you to be able to say you have done your MOT or Tax but its almost there. Of course with it syncing to the cloud there is a cost, that I MUST pass on somehow. I looked into Ads but Microsoft in thier wisdom only allow thier ad framework in america so Im out (UK). But I'm thinking of a free version that has ads (in future) and does not sync to cloud. Thoughts on what you would/might pay for this app would be greatly appreciated.
The future of the app?
Well I am planning a pro version which is for business mileage and will export from the web site allowing business travellers to fill out expense forms. But there are lots to add to this app as well.
Take a look at the vid and let me know what you think.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tyw_ivcygk
Njoy.
id add light comercial vans upto 3.5tonnes as many courier use wm devices so many will upgrade to wp7
Love it and it looks superb. I dont know what you can and cannot do in regards to apps interacting with other features of the phone. But the option to put a reminder in the calendar or a pop up one month before the tax is due or service is due etc I think would be really beneficial (liked I said not sure if MS will let you do that though)
The only other thing I can think of is a field it enter a monetary value for the top up. So you put 44.66 litres in and it cost £70 for instance. You could maybe track this in the same way the MPG are, but as a Pence, or cent etc per mile.
In regards to price, there are alot of apps/games I have seen for say £2.99 that I refuse to pay for (bejwelled for one) but this I would pay for. Im not sure what price you were expecting but Id happily pay £2.99 for it which seems the average.
I know you have spoke about the cloud but is it possible to export the information to PDF or excel etc and then have the users email this to themselves, this would cut your costs but again I dont know whats allowed
Good Luck and I look forward to this being released.
4 or 5 euro isn't a bad prize .
if you could put in lpg and diesel blend (trucks that run on diesel and lpg ) then this app would be the hammer .
it would also be nice if you could ad your own car/truck .
lets say I have a scania R420 and I am driving on diesel and lpg , I would want to know if I am saving money .
normally a truck uses 32 litre of diesel every 100 KM
now it uses 22 litre of diesel and 10 litre of LPG
Diesel: costs 1 Euro
LPG: costs 0.50 Euro
it would be nice if your app could calculate my savings per 100 KM .
if you could make that happen you would have a winner .
Greetings Cees.
looks great! i would be willing to pay $5-7 for it without adds. I would also be willing to beta test for you as i am picking up a samsung focus on monday.
Keep up the good work, hopefully we will see this app in the market soon!
App showing in other games on my phone
I bought the app yesterday and couldn't find it. Today I noticed in other games. Should I uninstall and resync? I pinned to start for now.
thanks for what looks like a good app. Have another question. I have a csv file exported from a program I was using on my iphone. Any way of exporting or manually entering almost two years of data online vs the phone? You also mention website. Was is the url so I can check it out.
Thanks,
Johnny
Looks like a decent app but it also shows up in other gas for me
Thanks for comments
Hi all
Thanks for the comments, aint been on here in a while. Dont know why its showing in the games section, I've downloaded the trial and it shows in the normal menu, have purchase it and try it that way.
Answers:
1) Cost of fueling up will be coming in an update (not long)
2) Putting final touches to website then its live. it will be at www.infinitemonkeytheorem.co.uk You will be able to do everything you can do on the phone but see more information and view multiple car details over each other
3) Had to do some changes to the app to see the charts better, this is coming real soon.
4) will be adding fuel type soon.

One idea I have going is that as the data is stored online, I should be able to send a message to the phone when a service / mot /tax is due and the pic will go amber and show a 1.
The thing i'm working on right now is auto-mate (offline edition). The basic functionality of keeping track of your vehicle, store when your tax/mot is, and it will schedule the services for you, but all offline. becuase of the zero cost to me, it will be priced low. thinking £0.75...
Hope to have that out in a week.
Just checked and microsoft has put it under games, when I specifically said Tools and it was under tools originally.???
Nice one microsoft.
I could e-mail microsoft to change this but I'll just do an update which will fix it. Sorry for it being in the wrong place, not my fault.
Glad to hear. I just tried uninstall and reinstall and it didn't work. I hope I can enter my 2 years of data easily on the website. Can't see doing that on the phone. I could just get a new car and start over Those new 5.0 mustangs are nice. Add sync and I would be a happy camper
Prepare to be one happy camper, now im not saying now, im not saying in 1 week but excel import/export is always a step in the process
Just to let you know, an update was sent to microsoft over the weekend. This update will put the app back in the apps list. Include better charting, bug fixes. And ability to send error reports on some errors if they happen
Thanks for the update. Finally moved from under Games. When will the web site be up? I still haven't entered my previous data. Have been hoping to do it online and sync to phone.
Its in alpha now.... Beta next then live.
I just realized after putting in my second entry that I can't enter how much per tank or price per gallon. Any chance you will be adding this?
Yes, this is coming in an update.
Clicking on the historical button for miles/week shows the graph for MPG?
Also, whenever I enable the live tile, save the settings. The marker always goes back to disabled?

Amazon AppStore.

I just wanted to say that the Amazon App Store is a really nice alternative to the Android Market. With honeycomb finally get to see new apps. Angry Birds Rio is really nice, and nows its free today for the ad free version.

Can someone explain to me the logic in having another place to get apps outside of the Google Market that benefits consumers? So I get Angry Birds Rio because it is exclusive however, if I remove the Amazon market app it stops working. Why? And all the other apps I checked are already available in the Google Market. So why do I need to use the Amazon Appstore other than exclusive content which in my opinion if fragmenting the available apps?

Different features in the actual marketplace; different payment processor (Amazon, which I use extensively, has all my payment information but I do not use Google Checkout); different prices and yes, a different selection. Amazon and other app stores can offer additional features to developers like the DRM you are complaining about which will lead to fragmentation that may or may not be a good thing (time will tell). Who knows, maybe there will be a prime-esque subscription service at some point. Best Buy may sell the same games as Gamestop, but I'm glad I have the choice to never shop at the latter.

I am all about choice but having multiple places to search is not a positive feature in my opinion. Will we have 10 other app stores pop up next week? Not very appealing in my opinion.

Well I just like the ability to see all the new released apps. In Google's market for the Xoom all you can see is the featured and top apps.

I can see you concern but I do not see how that is any different from other shopping experiences. I prefer Amazon's search/sorting capabilities from my brief look earlier. I'm sure eventually there will be apps to search any and all available app stores.

That is an issue that Google can resolve. You get 10 other companies providing an app store, how is that helping? You then have to do the same search 10 times.

I see your point. I agree I would prefer one place to get my apps. But right now when I just go browsing for apps amazon is alot easier.
This has to be one of the biggest blunders I have ever seen with Android yet. Most of the Amazon market is filled with apps that are already available in the Google Market. The only app I have seen so far that is not available is Angry Birds Rio. And if you do not install or have removed the Amazon appstore app, you cannot even run it. Does that sound like the same issue with DRM protected music?
And what allows Amazon to create their own app store? Is it easy for 20, 30, 100 others to start their own store with mostly the same apps with their own rules? This does not look good. Who wants to search 100 stores for apps to find what they are looking for and on top of that, have different rules. This has to be the most retarded thing I have ever seen since owning an Android device and is doomed for failure.
If you don't like it, don't use it. Let market forces determine things. If 10 app stores popped out tomorrow I guarantee most would not succeed. As it is there are several alternative app stores for android already, and they have not caused any problems. Competition is ALLWAYS a good thing, even for our beloved google. Same reason I am happy that apple is constantly pushing on android and vice-versa. Competition is the underlying rationale for using Android for me.

So on your PC, you would rather have one single source for all your software? You don't comparison shop, buy from different vendors, directly from developers? The app concept and having it all in one place is a convenience, thats it. Its like saying you should not open up a Target because your town already has a Wall-Mart or something...

This is not my PC. You go to Amazon store and you see the same apps available in the Google Market. You think the average consumer wants to search multiple markets for an app? I know I don't. And the same app works from Google market and not from another app store because their appstore app is not installed? You think this is a good user experience? I don't. Do not compare to PC experience because the Android tablet experience is based on competition from Apple iPad not from a PC experience. This will be a disaster in a year from now where iPad users can search one location for all their app needs and Android tablet users will need to search 100+ for theirs. There is no reason why these apps cannot be in one location.

haha i don't want to get a back and forth going here, but really, just don't use the amazon app store and all will be ok. not to overblow the analogy, but two supermarkets usually carry 99% of the same things, doesn't mean you should get rid of one or preclude new ones from opening up.
i realize that apple people have their walled garden with their false sense of security and limited options, but take music purchases as an example: i can either say, buy all my music from iTunes like most Apple people do, or i can do what i do, which is source it from eMusic, Amazon MP3, directly from the artists, etc, all of which i am able to do from both my galaxy s or my xoom, and all of which i am able to do for less money than if i just bought everything from iTunes. oh and since the artists usually get a better deal if i avoid the iTunes store i know more of my money is going directly to them. same thing applies to app stores. its not really all that complicated, i mean, how lazy have we gotten if we can't be bothered to look for things on more than one app store?
as far as the drm deal where apps won't work without amazon appstore, i am not crazy about it, and if that is the case, i would definitely think twice before buying anything from them. maybe some content providers will insist on using amazon's system, but if the terms are that restrictive i'll just take my money elsewhere.

Listen, I do not want back and forth either. I want to understand the reasoning behind having another place to get apps. If there is a restriction or process that does not work posting the same app to the Google market, what is it? Why is another market or appstore needed other than money to Amazon? I don't get it.
Why would developers choose to use the Amazon store over the Google Market? Can someone answer that please with specifics? Is this a takeover of the Google market?

The only reason i could think of would be different methods of payment. What forms of payments do they both use? Actually another reason could be the amazon one may also allow "banned" software, as the market is run by google.

Right now? I do not know as I am not familiar with the policies of them both. However, as we have seen with the Apple App Store there have been many rules which have upset developers over time. Some of those are directly tied to how much money a developer can make off their app. For example, if Google were to mandate something similar to Apple's new subscription model I imagine many developers would like an alternative.
From a user perspective, having competing promotions like Amazon's free paid-app every day is nice
I agree that it can be a hassle to look for things in different stores but it is for the best. Its the universal rule of conservation if you will. The Amazon Appstore with bring competition to Google forcing google to step up its game if does not want to loose customers. For example Amazon will have a free paid app per day, maybe that will move google to do the same or top that. Amazon will test each app first to make sure it is not malicious and even though it will never be perfect maybe that will move google to do something similar. Amazon has worked out deals with developers in regards to the checkout process which may lead some developers that before only sold their apps from their own website to put them in the appstore (Gameloft). Also this has led some developers to drop their prices at the Amazon Appstore.
I understand not everyone thinks this is for the best or that its too much of a hassle but when you think of things from a perspective of growth and innovation it seems to be good.
In regards to the DRM content it is one of those things that are just tough to deal with sure we can try to avoid everything that has DRM but that is why Netflix and Hulu have not been supported thus far.

[POLL]Does PlayMusic,TVShows & Magazines Unavailability on NEXUS7 outside US matters?
As you may already be aware of, some of Google Play features are not available outside of US at this moment, and that includes Play Music, TV shows and Magazines.
DOES IT REALLY MATTERS TO YOU?
How many of us actually buy these things from market, please use the VOTING button.
I just hate all websites cribbing about NEXUS 7 and bringing out Negative points unnecessarily !!!
I prefer to have these items available, but if they were not due to location or whatever reason I'm sure we as a community could devise a workaround/solution.
The next step is to rename the thread to something besides [POLL], heh.

XDA devs will make it work, that's another story.
Basically I wanna know how its a negative point & how many ppl actually uses it !!
For me, the only thing I would be interested in is the TV shows, but I can happily live without. I don't care much for the magazines, and I already have Google Music, through the use of a proxy as soon as it was released!
It does matter up to a point but for me the number one issue putting me off the Google Play shop is the absolute lack of proper search engine. Considering how Google made their name in the first place it is just embarrassing. If they would sort that out I would happily live with the lower level of content.

Same here!
Google Music is actually the most important feature for me, as I have all of my music files stored there and working perfectly since day one. And there's also plenty of good and free books available in the Google Play store.
I'd like to see Magazines. Music would probably be useful too (currently not in the cloud at all). Also, unrelated to Play, I'd like proper Wallet support (I did the hack to get it working on my Nexus, bought 3 coffees with the pre-pay and then it didn't work any more as I can't recharge it)
I'm aware there's workarounds for us UK folk but it all seems so unnecessary, especially when Apple seem to have sussed it. I hope Google can work out whatever crappy licensing rubbish prevents it at some point soon.
I'd like music to be available to buy but its not as if its hard to buy/download elsewhere and upload to the library.
I know if/when TV becomes available it will likely be months/series behind the US availability so I'll still use other methods to get recent shows. Recently I decided to check out iTunes and the UK was things like series 6 of mythbusters against the US currently showing series 10. I'd actually happily pay for the TV if they can get US shows available in the UK at the same time/not long after they are in the US. Not likely though.
Magazines aren't really a big consideration.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
Music I'd like, but I'll just use the workaround anyway, the rest doesn't matter at all.
Well you can sign up for Google Music using a proxy, and from that point on, use it just fine on Android (you can't BUY music, but you can use it to store your own music). I have been doing this for over a year from the UK.
If you want Magazines, then you have Zinio, which has an excellent selection. I think you also get some trial issues too when you install it (I did with my Asus TF101)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zinio.mobile.android.reader
Perhaps Google should just buy them...
TV Shows, well Loveflim and Netflix offer that...
So no, whilst it would be nice, it's not essential, as unlike Apple, Android gives you the option of consumer choice. In the UK we have Apps/Movies/Books. And it's sure the others will arrive eventually, once content publishers can be certain that upsettting the iTunes/Apple monopoly for content publishing is worth it. Apple are the ones that are holding a gun to content publishers heads. Supply to Google and lose iTunes publishing.
#BoycottApple
I put down that it matters, but I still bought. I do consider it a negative, when up here in Canada it seems that if there's one thing Apple does right, it's allow us a more inclusive media selection. I mean, I still use iTunes for purchasing music, and thanks to iSyncr and PlayerPro I can still reference my media library but.. it's not as slick as a real Google solution.
Don't care about the TV, but Magazines I also care about - would love to be able to read mag's on that thing. I'll check out Zinio, but not holding my breath.
So ya, to me it matters as in Google stop ignoring us, but doesn't matter enough to affect my purchases..
Thankfully EBooks do work up here at least....
I think if I bought a nexus 7, I'd try to use the play store
seems Close call, let see the no. on 19th July: UK Release !!
Not a big deal, as I will mainly use it for browsing/internets and some gaming.
I don't want to buy music as mp3, but I want to subscribe to music streaming service, ditto magazine and books. I don't want to buy them, but I would like a "credit" system where I can pick a few books or magazines every month. If that's not possible, I don't need any content from the google store, just apps.
well im from germany and it would be much better to have some good german magazines build for the nexus 7.. the U.S. is not the only market ^^ all in all maybe 40% at the end of the year I guess.

Ah, sure I had tried this in the past but took another look, and seems ideal. It's got my usual holiday-reading fare in there like T3 etc.
Cheers for the recommendation. Will investigate the music workaround at some point for my existing stuff too.

[Q] Answer me this

I'm writing a paper on the use of apps for my college course. Basically, I'm wanting to know what the main reason is for the development of apps from a developer's point of view. Is it money, making something useful, or pure entertainment in developing? Also, if you're not a developer how many apps do you have and how many do you actually use/find useful? If I could get some people to chime in and share their experiences and opinions it'd be greatly appreciated!
Non developer.
I mostly use (in order):
Tapatalk (car and IT forums)
Cortana (Windows Phone digital assistant)
Browsers (data compression, normal, tor)
Games (allsorted)
Jesse, first of all thanks for the reply! It seems as if all your apps have an actually use for you. Have you ever paid for any of your apps and if so was it worth the money?
Not a developer, but I mostly use browsers and I also use ppsspp for my gaming needs. I find it fun to experiment with an Android device, because that way you get to explore your device's full potential. And since android is highly customisable, the possibilities are endless.
Thanks for the reply! It's interesting that you guys both brought up that you use multiple browsers. Is there a reason for this? In Jesse's case I can see how you would need a separate browser for tor to access .onion sites but personally I just use the stock browser and in the very rare occasion will I open up Google chrome. Could you tell me a bit more about ppsspp? I have my note 4 rooted and running custom ROM so the customization is great I completely agree. Android is awesome!

I do have other apps too, I just don't use them as regularly. Some of these are different launchers, lock screen customizers, and apps like tasker, as well as some one click root apps I'm trying. (if you can help me root my MT6572 please help here

)
All the apps I originally listed I never paid for except for GTA SA(not pirated, but I have some originally free games that are cracked)
On this post, I have paid for tasker, nova launcher prime and my locker pro. That was mostly because I had a free $20 google play voucher with my phone.

As for browsers, I use google chrome on my xperia sp (I might get rid of it when I root it though), whereas on my xperia t I mostly use the stock sony browser. Now, as for the ppsspp, it's actually a psp emulator. In other words, it allows you to run psp games (in .iso format) in your android phone. I think it's one of the best apps on the play store, since I don't like most native android games like temple run, minions and such. Since you have a note 4, which is a very powerful device, I highly recommend you to check it out.
This one IS coming from a developer.
Oftentimes, when I make an app, I saw a hole and I wanted to fill it. The most recent app spawned itself from the Droid Turbo not being rooted until now(finally).
People heard there was a root method so they were waiting on a hair trigger's notice to find out if it had been released. So I took it upon myself to let people know when it happened, where to get more info, and when it was released, how to get it for themselves. It spawned over 400 unique downloads on 15 different devices with an aggregate rating of 4.82.
I also like to improve on apps that I've already seen. If I feel something is drastically missing, I like to look at what they have and ask what I can do better with that.. then add what's missing.
Another example is an app I created that is made for creative commons photo sharing. So for example, when someone needs a picture for their design project, then they can simply open the app, search the word, and download. I came up with it for my senior project and we branded the whole thing, but it never went anywhere because it was unrefined.
In contrast to that reason, I often make apps because I'm testing something and it snowballs. I have a bunch of different "app pieces" in a handful of languages sitting around on my computer.
To summarize, I make apps because:
1. There's a hole and I'm going to fill it.
2. I want to improve what I see.
3. I'm simply passionate about it.
Hope that helps!
