[Q] looking for purchase advice - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am seriously looking at the HTC one as my next device.
First a little history - I currently run a HTC Vivid which sadly was a great phone with little support. Fortunately for me, I have been running WCX illuminati roms for the past 2 years, so that was as good as it ever got for this device.
Now, I am on AT&T, however my employer pays my monthly bill which is a huge blessing, however I have to fully fund my phones at full price, with no allowable discounts, as our wireless devices are managed by a company called tangoe, so going into an AT&T store is a no go, unless I pay full price.
All that considered, I have 3 options, pay full price in an AT&T store, the HTC developers edition, or the google play edition. All 3 are very close in price, but which is my best option, considering I know I will be running custom roms for the most part.
I do like sense, at least from my experience with WCX roms in the past. However open to running vanilla android if no go tweaked roms are out there. Suggestions?

One more detail,
I really like the thought of a bigger screen, as tiny text is difficult to read, I see there is possible an HTC ONE MAX coming to the US this fall, wondering if I should hold out for that one?

I would go with the HTC developer or AT&T and get the 64Gb model (and then install a custom ROM or at least superuser to get rid of AT&T bloat).
If you don't need that much storage, go for the GE.
I've not heard that the MAX is going to be released in the US.

32 gb is way too much storage for me. I'd recommend One to everyone! I thought I'd hate blinkfeed, but it's pretty neat. Boomsound is a huge plus. The screen is the best, period. Support will be plenty thanks to xda. Camera is just what I'd imagine, and even a bit better in dark situations. The front camera is very good and it's wide lens a huge plus.
Things to know. Check the camera. If the picture is anything but black, it might be broken or need an update.
Check for gaps near the speakers. Some are better than others.
My phone (black One) had some black paint spill on the edge near the volume rocker. Impossible to remove. So there's obviously some problems with manufacturing. I'm happy with this any way.
Edit: I don't have solid evidence to back this up, just some testing of my own. The Samsung GS4 seems to have a better antenna than my phone. Tired a couple of different radio firmwares and it was always worse.
T9'd from my black HTC One M7

Do you need 64GB or is 32 enough? Because that can affect what options are available to you. Aside from that, all three are basically the same hardware-wise. The AT&T and HTC Dev editions will have the same HBOOT bootloader and same Sense ROM, except the AT&T one comes with AT&T bloatware apps installed and skinned network icons in the status bar. The Google Edition will come with a different bootloader, recovery, and (obviously) OS.
After you unlock your bootloader and install a custom recovery, however, you can easily** switch back and fourth between all of these different configurations, given that the underlying hardware is the same (the only exception would be if you were using a Verizon or other non-AT&T model).
** Note that switching the bootloader/radio/recovery itself can be a bit more tricky as it requires S-OFF and you probably shouldn't be doing that very frequently. Switching ROMs itself, however, is no problem. The only reason you would really need to switch out something like your bootloader is if you want to receive OTA (over the air) updates. I.e. if you want OTA updates for the GE (Google Edition) you will need to be running the GE recovery and bootloader and all that and if you want Sense OTA updates from HTC then you need to be running HBOOT, etc.

HTC One X is now the same price as the Atrix HD

At&T has a new price point for HOX at $99.99 on contract so is the Atrix HD worth it still? Right now I am not sure since CM10 looks pretty good on the HOX.

I strongly considered the One X but the limited and non-expandable internal memory was completely a deal breaker for me. I have a bunch of music and movies on a 32GB card that I would have had to squeezed down to its 16GB internal memory. Why in this day and age would they do that? Might be a "cloud" thing. Since with the "cloud" you don't need large on-board memory. I don't buy that. I don't want to blow my very limited unlimited data plan, and not all of us have LTE coverage. While I have LTE at home (though with WiFi I've never needed to use it) my work still is on edge!
In addition I got the Atrix HD for $49 from Best Buy AND I signed up for their upgrade gift card (back in Feb) so I got a $50 gift card back instantly.
Thanks and I forgot about the expandable memory, and good deal with bestbuy now. Wish I could do something like that myself, but I want to hold onto this unlimited plan for as long as I can just to stick it to At&t. Now that I think about it the I hope that the tmobile version gets a microsd card slot like the Sprint Evo LTE. Outside of that I hope motorola unlocks the AHD's bootloader since stock doesn't seem like it is taking advantage of the S4 cpu.
I also hate how they shrunk down the internal memory from 32GB to 16GB in the US version, it was a deal breaker for me as well.
I have my family on a family plan so we have 4 lines.
I have another upgrade coming in a week and my family is happy with what they got. I was thinking about picking up an SGS2 Skyrocket or maybe even the new Sony that came out, but now that the HTC One X is cheaper I'll be getting that.
When I traded my Atrix 2 in they gave me $150 and I got the Atrix HD and I still have the $100 gift card, so I'll be getting the OneX free as well (at cost of being in contract)
Even though the Atrix HD had been disappointing because the lack of a dev community and the locked bootloader. I've grown to really appreciate the phone because it's engineering has been so solid for the hardware/software, that this phone has been running so well I see no need to change anything about it.
Eventually in a few months Dev will pick up on the Atrix HD, until Then I'll have the OneX sometime next week to play with.
One X vs AHD
Yes it appears on Sunday the price of the 1X is going to match the price of the AHD making it a challenging decision. However, since the HTC has been out for a couple of months, many of the bugs and hardware issues have reared their ugly head, at least on the AC forums. Of course, I do realize this a very small percentage of the total population of One X owners. Regardless, I'm not a fan of what HTC did to a perfectly good functioning multi-tasking in ICS which is where the AHD shines. And yes, the lack of microSD in the HTC is also annoying.
Has anyone in this forum had any regrets for investing in a mid-level phone like this? All the GS3 fans rave about it, but it too has its issues and I don't like the fact that the native email client does not allow pinch zooming emails. When I tested the AHD it seems it does and I also like the Smart Actions app too.
As a noob Andriod user, would you folks recommend the AHD due to the near stock Android experience? I don't want to waste an upgrade and need to make the best decision. Thanks.

If I had the chance I'd get the SGS3
If I had to choose between the MAHD and the 1X, I'd probably stick with the MAHD. Even though the MAHD isnt really any fun to modify right now, that'll change soon or later.
It's really up to the person. If you already have doubts about the HTC One X's UI, then I'd stick with the MAHD
I love the ability to stack icons on your home screen to make folders, and the feature to swipe icons like your email or texts to get a preview without opening REALLY saves time and makes using ICS so much more productive.
As soon as we can unlock the boot loader, this phone will become a monster.
If we only had root access right now, I'd be able to edit the build.prop and have this phones hardware beat the 1x and SGS3 no sweat.
So if I understand correctly, an important part of the decision about which device to purchase should be the developer element? In another thread in this forum that has to do with someone that exchanged their GS3 for the AHD, a guy who's a big GS3 proponent stated he feels its unlikely the AHD will get a JB update since Moto moves very slowly with updates even though Google owns Moto Mobility. And since the boot loader is locked on this phone, there won't be any development yet.
From my perspective, the choice needs to weigh all the elements of the phone, how many issues people are experiencing and that it's well balanced in all areas. A new consumer review vid was just posted in the AHD forum on AC and it's well done. He points out all the strong points and the weak ones on the AHD, too. And as we know, the big sticking points on this phone are the camera and battery though from what I see in the XDA forum, most have found using Juice Defender and/or the Smart Actions battery saver help resolve the battery problem.
I like the new garnet red color for the ATT GS3 and with the credits I got at Amazon, it would reduce the price to nearly $100 (though I could get the AHD for $25 But money aside, I just want the best phone that will be reliable and do everything it should without any problems.

That doesn't actually have to be an important element in your decision if rooting, flashing Roms etc. isn't your strong point or desire in Android phones. Since this phone is still new development will be very slow for who knows how long!
I came from the GS3 which I owned for at least 3 weeks. I loved the phone, everything it was hyped for came with it. It was quick and snappy right out of the box, but so is the AHD. From owning the GS3 for that amount of time; easing into the AHD was not bad at all. It was still quick and snappy out of the box had no complaints thus far for speed/multitasking, phone as of now is unable to be rooted so what you get is what you get. As far as JB update...well I'm not too sure on that criteria, I came from both the Atrix and Atrix 2, now both phones still don't have ICS i believe don't ..quote me on that lol but both phones are capable to experience ICS thru ports via ROMs. So they still get a little taste of how it is, I personally believe if we don't "Officially receive JB" eventually we could possibly see ported ROMs of JB (BL unlocked hopefully) in the near future. Aside of the BL being locked some members are at work of producing a root method for our phones and once that gets done..boy our phones are just half way there lol.
Haven't had any problems with the battery thus far since I have activated Batt. Extender App thru Smart Actions immediately out of the box, also installed Juice Defender and I can say it does make a huge difference so your not missing out on the battery too much.
I too loved the look of the GS3 in Red and was considering exchanging colors as opposed to getting the AHD, but I came from the White GS3 and i suffered from the deadly "Paint Crack" defect on the back cover!! I figured damn well I don't like the blue color and it did have a problem as well with the back cover...so I assumed the red just might have a defect lying there somewhere hahah.
I purchased the GS3 at Radio Shack for $150 thru upgrade which came to $207 after taxes so if you do plan on ordering the device through Amazon your getting quite a good deal, cheaper than any other person had problem gotten the device for lol.
All in all the AHD is a very reliable phone as well as the GS3! Both phones are capable of doing the same daily routines i.e texting, calling, browsing, etc.(Root/Rom aside) You can't go wrong with either device they are both great and I recommend both, it totally comes down to personal prefrence! If you were to ask me IMO I would get the AHD it's price point is unbeatable and for what comes out of the box you definitely can't go wrong, you won't be disappointed! Hope I was able to be of some help!

Your unlimited plan will last as long as you want. Just don't downgrade data plans, because then you lose it. I kept mine. Actually did a cross upgrade (one of the phones on plan was due for upgrade but not the one that I wanted to upgrade). They switched my unlimited plan to a LTE unlimited plan, without any question, or argument.

Did you do this through at&t or a third party like best buy or Walmart? The reason I ask is when I went to a third party for an upgrade in the fall last year they said I would have to drop to a tiered plan. I went through At&t then to keep it, just wish I could get these reduced deals through places like amazon and RadioShack.

Chcl8.. Yes, you were of some help. Went back to the ATT store today and one of the reps is very knowledgeable and also owns a rooted Atrix that he's running Linux on too. I left the store thinking the GS3 might be the better decision due to not knowing if the AHD will ever get the JB update. And to me, that's BIG deal. I've never rooted or flashed a ROM due to owning an iPhone for so many years, though it's something I'd like to learn at some point. But I don't want to do anything that would void the warranty.
He said that after a few weeks I probably wouldn't notice the blue cast on the screen, though to me, it's pretty obvious now. And the points you are making about the hair line cracking in the plastic on the back of the GS3 was interesting and also made me think. But having a removable battery is nice just the same. I'm really torn right now and can't decide. And since I'll be getting the phone from ATT, getting the AHD will also include the car dock and car charger which is nice. I do prefer how Moto has skinned ICS as compared to TW though but the camera really isn't great at all. UGH!

I think it'll get it, it'll just be a long time before it comes out. I'd bet the next version of Android will be out before this phone gets JB. If you guys ever get root though you'll likely be able to get it before the official update drops via leak on the Moto servers like what has recently come out for the Atrix 2. As for the hairline cracking, if you go ripping the cover off like a madman you can expect that. but if you get it started a little, and then use your thumbnail to run along the bezel of the phone to get it off the rest of the way you won't have an issue.

I'm really interested in seeing what you have planned now that root has been released! Have you had a chance to work with the Atrix HD yet?

Would you recommend the Droid 3?

I recently bought an HTC Desire Z but was given the T-mobile model which doesn't suppport 850Mhz 3G, which is what my local network runs. The eBay seller has a Droid 3 XT883 that he can exchange my HTC for, would you recommend your Droid?
I really like the QWERTY keyboard on the HTC but there seems to be less in the way of ROMs for the Droid. Any other models you can suggest?

Its not a bad device, its got a solid cpu and ram which is still pretty speedy, the keyboard is one of the best available ( besides the droid 4's ), but in terms of roms and dev support its almost dead. They devs still around are still working very hard but sometimes a lot of things are outdated , and if you get brick it can be hard with limited support.
It is quite durable and reliable, easy to root as well, once hash develops the JB ROM it'll be a solid phone. I use mine day to day, on an ICS ROM, and it works well. However, doesn't mean I won't buy the fighter once is out, due to the fact that its a bit old. But I would recommend it.

Never even approach to this phone. It is the worst smartphone I have ever not only owned, but even held in my hand. This phone has managed to disappoint me not even in Motorola, but in whole Android. I'm pulling the thread to get brand new flagship on WP8 - thankfully we will never see WP8 on Motos. F..k Moto, damn droid!
the biggest pro to this phone, the keyboard, sucks for me. i've had 2 now and both have had problems with double pressing keys and some keys (particularly the question mark) not wanting to register. plus there's very little support. stay away
edit: on the pro side i can use it to open my beer bottles because of the metal bezel
DROID 3 - good specs, terrible support/updates. biggest drawback at the moment is the locked bootloader. i'm currently trying to decide whether to keep it (hoping we can actually get an OS update) or sell it.
if you're looking for the QWERTY keyboard and full 3G band support, have a look at the Xperia Pro mk16a. It's a good piece of equipment already running Jelly Bean.
Droid 3 could be good for you
If the following apply to you, the Droid 3 is a great phone:
1. You are OK with not having the latest and greatest version of Android
2. You don't mind rooting
3. 3G rather than 4G is OK for your purposes
Number two kind of applies to all Verizon Android phones in my book. They are so incredibly full of crapware as they come from Verizon that the hardware seems basically crippled by it. However rooting it and installing Titanium backup and then freezing all the crapware so it can't run transforms the phone. Personally I don't much care if I ever get ICS or JB on it. Once de-crapified the version it has is fine in my book. Then again my needs are probably less demanding than others. For me my phone is just a glorified PDA for getting my email, providing appointment notifications and storing my contacts. I use Touchdown for those things and that is going to be pretty much the same no matter what phone I use it on.
The speakerphone is the best I've had so far, very clear sound. The camera is above par as well, crisp and little grain, certainly better than my Atrix.
Absolutely

[Q] What phone is next for you?

I see 3 contenders, each has strengths and weaknesses [in no particular order]:
HTC One (M8)
Samsung Galaxy S5
Sony Xperia Z2
I'm not thrilled with the camera on the HTC One (M8), but overall I'm ok with HTC
and have been very happy and thankful for the support I've received on this forum,
I love my Vivid and it's still a great phone.
The S5 has a great camera, and all the other features that matter for me [SD card slot,
active community support, replaceable battery, strong environment resistance] ... BUT
I don't like KNOX and based on what I'm reading [and experiencing with my Samsung
Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition tablet], that lockdown & strategy isn't going to go away
any time soon ... and may, for all intents and purposes, be 'insurmountable' without
giving up warranty support - which isn't OK with me, cuz I'm not made of money ...
On to the Sony ... seems like the specs are pretty good, perhaps lacking in onboard
memory [16Gb at the moment, I'd prefer 32Gb or 64Gb], good processors, decent design
and build quality ... but the community support seems thin [perhaps because Sony isn't
a huge player in the US? Perhaps because they're release cycle & adoption by big US
carriers is a lilttle thin & doesn't get as much press as HTC and Sammy? I don't know]
and I don't know how good the accessory market is for them ...
So the question is ... what phone is next for you, and how/why did you come to that
decision?
If it's one of these three, great ... if it's not, great ... because that may help me to see
options I have missed.
Thanks in advance for taking time to slog through my drivel.

Trying to keep the expenses down, so to actually upgrade I am considering the Galaxy S4. The S5 is too expensive, HTC One does not have a replaceable battery, don't particularly like Sony these days.
Mind, I am still 3 months from upgrade time, and my mind is not set.
I replaced the Vivid with a Nexus 4. Comparing the early effort for custom roms Vivid vs Nexus, it was literally night and day. Waiting weeks/months to find a way to unlock the bootloader vs 2 minutes with the nexus.
I will never buy another carrier branded phone, nor a phone that is locked down. If I were to upgrade again, I would have to go with the Nexus 5. I might not get the bells, whistles and prestige of the lofty flagships, but for an Android buff like me, the open nature of the nexus line is priceless.

I was using Vivid in 2011, 2012.
In 2013, I was thinking between google edition i9505 and AT&T SHG-I337 for the upgrade Google edition came unlock but it was cost around $600 at that time. AT&T phone was network locked but it cost around $65 for upgrade with 2 years plan.
I went with AT&T SGH-I-337. I rooted the phone before I activated. After activation I installed the custom rom. The phone came with Android 4.2.2.
This month I installed the 4.4.2 custom rom (Golden eye 29, 30 then 31). I am very happy with S4 this way.
I am thinking of going for S5 after the developer find a way to tame the knox thingy.

If the HTC One (M9) rumors are true, are you switching?

The latest rumors say these are gonna be the specs. And even if they're wrong, they'll be pretty close.
5.2-5.5" QHD 1440P Screen
Snapdragon 810 Chipset
3GB of RAM
64GB Storage (Up to 128GB of expandable storage by MicroSD)
20.7MP Rear Camera with OIS
13MP or 4UP Front camera
Android 5.0 Lollipop with HTC Sense 7.0
Water and Dust resistant
Cat.6 LTe modem
And 3,500 mAh battery.
The specs are pretty similar, but if I were to switch, it would be for the extra battery life and camera. Plus, you can switch from Sense to GPE when you want. (After the RUU is released)
Other news web sources says otherwise,

The answer is no. There is no reason to switch because I personally use a Nexus device to stay on top of the chain when it comes to custom ROM and custom kernel developments.

Me too. But Google Play Edition phones also come not too far behind. Just a matter of about 2 weeks.
But I still probably won't switch

This is true, even though GPE is good, its still not a Nexus. I usually have 2 phones (one as a backup which is currently a G3) but I wouldn't mind something different maybe a G4 as a backup. I love my Nexus because you can do anything you want with it.
Only if there was a GPE option, and at least a 5.5 inch screen. IMO GPE is just as good as a Nexus. The m8 had GPE and Sense Roms, AOSP/CM Roms and multi boot. Development wasn't lacking for the M8.
I don't hate Sense but I like a Google experience not HTC(at least not software wise)
It needs to lose some forehead from the M8 to really make me want to switch.
The M8 was one of my favorite phones I've had in recent memory. I like the N6 better, but I'm also a phone slut.
I agree I miss my m8. I almost regret selling m8 for the N6
So, I'm pretty interested in the M9, only as a GPE version though. I am back on my M8 after issues with my N6 and HTC really did make some good hardware.
We'll see what happens in a couple of months.
I keep hearing that it will be only 5 inch screen...this does not please me...
HTC makes nice phones, but if the screen is less than 5.5" then I'm not even going to consider it. I'm keeping my Nexus 6, however a good backup phone is always nice.
Not switching. I like the Nexus, and don't give a crap about having the 'newest and shiniest', as that game never ends...
Sent from my Nexus 6
i love htc devices and their sense, but i hate htcdev and getting back to stock it is really painful. changing the supercid is okay but if you make one litttle thing wrong you may get a bricked device.
I'm probably never going back to a HTC device. I've been a HTC user since the Evo 4G. But I have serious issues with how well the radios work that HTC uses. Very poor performance overall. I could never get either a WiMAX, or LTE signal in my home with an HTC device. Case in point a M8 will never get a LTE signal, but my N6 gets -90db+ signal everywhere except for the basement. Same with the M7 , and the Evo LTE. Zip for signal.
My Nexus has about the same signal as my G3 does but it's better in areas where traditionally it would be weaker. (Only a -10db difference) however my Nexus golds onto LTE longer.

Advice on Buying Nexus 6?

I'm basically wondering how the Nexus 6 is doing? Has the latest update to 5.1.1 worked well for people or does it feel old? Will it most likely keep getting updates through Android M too? My S6 Edge benchmarks amazingly but Touchwiz ultimately sucks even now that it's gone through a VERY cheap lipo surgery.
Constant redraws have made me resort to using Nova Launcher and the RAM management is atrocious, I'm actually in habit now to always open the multi-tasking pane and closing all apps whenever I go to open a new one (on an $850 phone!!)! And don't get me started with the damn backwards capacitive buttons ON THE BEZEL. I can't tell you how many times I accidentally pressed them while holding my phone sideways for games or even just taking pictures. Now I have to make sure to hold the phone awkwardly to not press them...
It's just frustrating not having your expensive phone's stock OS work well (HTC One M8 being a prime example of how to get stock right). I also absolutely love having Stock Android on my Nexus 9 so it'd be sweet having stock on both phone and tablet. My only worry would be if anyone knows if a newer big sized Nexus phone is around the corner or is the Nexus 6 still a legit phone and worth the pricetag?
Thanks in advance!

Because a smartphone is a personal choice it is not easy to answer your questions. I will tell you what I did with my N6.
1. Rooted and flashed Franco's kernel.
2. Disabled not used Google apps.
3. Used build.prop editor.
Switched to tablet mode by changing the value LCD density from 560 to 384. Font size to huge.
WiFi scan interval from 15 to 200.
4. When available using apps with a black background.
Result is better battery life. And I hardly use my PC anymore. My N7-tablet is no longer needed.
Nexus 6 will get M and who knows after that? Quite possibly the next version. Then when support stops, we'll still get AOSP with a bit of dev work involved.
Samsung RAM management has always been bad. My S3 was terrible at it. They just cant get it right.
Stock = Whatever the phone comes with, so for the first part I assume you are referring to Touchwiz and Sense as Stock on those phones, but by the second part of your post when you say stock, it seems like you really meant Vanilla / Pure Android?
One of the reasons to buy a Google phone is that it is likely to be well-supported both by Google and by the community.
My last phone was a Galaxy S4. It was a very nice phone but I hated TouchWiz and Knox so I jumped ship and I've been very happy with my N6. As long as you are happy with a huge phone, you certainly don't need to worry about support.
Long time Samsung user (prev phone was S3). I looked long and hard at getting an S6, but too many disgruntled users (RAM, battery, and locked bootloader - although Rooting was achieved).
Looked at M9 and LG3 too. Hadn't really considered Nexus 6. Then after reading reviews and user comments, I bought an unlocked 64GB version for $549 ($150 off) on Amazon. Rooted it withing 30 minutes and had AT&T put a SIM in it.
Really happy so far (1 week in). Great battery life, fast, and no AT&T or Samsung bloat.
Also - I was off contract with AT&T, so I have 30 days with Amazon to return it if I want to.
I'm sort of in the same boat. I have about a month to decide if I want to go with this phone, the G4, or something else. Currently on an iPhone and while I like it, I miss Android. My first Android phone was the OG Droid from Motorola, so I'm leaning heavily to the Nexus.
While I'd love to get the 64GB version, it's just not in the cards at the moment to pay full price (just bought my wife a new road bike, and we're trying to save for a move), so I'll be using one of the 2 year upgrades on my AT&T account when it comes up next month.
