I am probably going to have one of the first Chromecast dongles in Canada unless someone ordered it with 1-day shipping or got it from a Best Buy across the border. I ordered it from Amazon with 2-day shipping to pick up in Point Roberts. I should have it by Friday or Saturday. I can report back as to how many region-related obstacles it throws up.
The first is getting the Chromecast setup apk as it's not available on CDN Play Store. Thanks to the helpful Dropbox link in this forum, I've got that covered.
If there is anything to note that CDN Chromecast users should be aware of, I will edit this first post on an ongoing basis.
EDIT: I have posted the Chromecast apk as of 2013/07/31 to the top post.
Summary:
- Everything works.
- If you have cloud music enabled on your Google Play Music it works.
- CDN Netflix works.
- YouTube works.
- Google Cast from Chrome desktop works. I do not have a powerful enough desktop to stream video but that is unrelated to region.
- If you connect your Android to a VPN or a DNS-changing service to try and access non-CDN Netflix, it will not cast titles unavailable in Canada to Chromecast successfully. Workarounds include either connecting your router itself to the VPN, or entering custom scripts into your router to redirect its hard-coded reliance on Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4).
Cool, so I guess I'm not the only one in Canada looking to get one. I got someone to order one for me, but I won't have it in my hands any time soon (10-20 days).
Looking forward to hear about any region issues. Hopefully there aren't many.

Welcome! I will keep you and the rest of Canada updated. It should arrive in Point Roberts sometime tomorrow. If it arrives before 1PM or so I'll go get it tomorrow, and otherwise Saturday morning.
Yes, do let us fellow Canucks know how it works here. Eagerly waiting for its release here in Canada or otherwise re-stock in the US...
OP, can you also link to the thread/post where the apk is posted to make it easier for all the non-US users?

I installed the Chromecast app and am wondering now if the nexflix / youtube etc apps for chromecast to work are also region specific. Please let us know! I ordered but a little too slowly so I'll have to wait.

Just got mine too! Been playing with it for an hour.
Setup worked via Nexus 7 using the apk posted upthread.
No problems with Netflix, YouTube or Google Play Music, casting from phone or tablet.
My old netbook on Windows XP was still willing to let me attempt to cast a Chrome tab but the results were lousy. From my dual-core desktop I had acceptable results casting a non-HD MP4 file direct, casting static web tabs and casting YouTube videos which would already be optimized. Attempted to cast a Collegehumor video and it was too laggy. I guess I need to get myself a Core i5 or better one of these days!
But yes, no trouble in Canada at all. Out of interest I tried connecting my tab to a VPN and launching a Netflix video only available in the US. The Chromecast just errors out. Perhaps a service like Unblock-Us would be useful since you can set the DNS at the router level and then get US Netflix.
Thanks for the initial feedback guys. Keep them coming.

What dual-core processor specifically does your desktop ? I plan to do quite a bit of casting from Chrome and my computers aren't exactly the latest spec.

Pentium Dual Core E5300, 2.6 GHz.
I can add this: I set up my router with a free trial of Unblock-Us, and then tried to cast a Netflix show that is only available in the USA. Again I got an error. So whatever stream Chromecast is using, it's not intercepted by this service.

The Chromecast app is now appearing as available on all devices in my Play Store. Did Google remove the region lock?
EDIT: Nevermind, Google's web interface seems to think I'm in the USA now but Play Store on-device still thinks of me as CDN. Probably for unrelated reasons - a combination of a US billing credit card and Unblock-Us.
Great news! I've got mine on order probably be a month it so before I get it, glad to know it will work.
I'm considering getting Chromecast for my mother and sister. Both have android phones but are not the most tech savvy people.
My big question is, are they going to be able to set this up to work with Netflix Canada reasonably easily? Does it even work with Netflix Canada?

I Believe the restriction on certain media outside the US is more having to do with united states copyright laws in other countries or some such. I don't think its a -google- discrimination.
Anyway I am sure its frustrating and I would be a little disappointed as well.
Yeah...good luck with that.

I think you will find it's a movie company restriction, nothing really to do with Google....

Old news
Sorry to say but the world is bigger then the states. Almost every country has different laws/restrictions ect. Not half of all the options you'll have in the states work in Europe due to above. I'm waiting for the Nexus 7 to be released (in my country) to buy one but I know we will miss a lot of content. Be patient google is working to fix this (I hope).
Even Barnes & Noble require you to have a credit card with a US address before you can buy any books on your Nook.

And have fun trying to buy things while you're out of the country. It (the Nook) doesn't even have the decency to tell you that it's not available until after you order and it just doesn't work. Eventually, you see an email pop up on your phone telling you that your money doesn't spend since you aren't in the US.
At least they let you keep (and download) everything you already purchased.
Google is trying to expand, the problem is that everything requires a contract signed with the media rights holders. And those holders are different in every freaking country.
Google isn't restricting your access, they just don't have the legal ability to give you that stuff until all the contracts get signed. Cut them some slack.

You either knew of these policies before hand or you didn't do your research before buying. In my opinion ignorance of policy is not at all a valid argument against a content provider. Google didn't force you to buy the product and they didn't force you to keep the product.
It's kind of like me buying peanut butter to use as an adhesive, then building an entire house using peanut butter instead of nails and glue for all material connections. Except the peanut butter would need to have "Not to be used for adhesive properties or as a construction material." But decide to use it anyway and then when my house starts falling apart I go on a derogatory defamation campaign and try to file a lawsuit demanding an injunction which would require Jif Peanut Butter Inc to start using epoxy resin in their peanut butter.
I understand you being frustrated but it's not googles fault and they didn't declare that the product would work in every place on Earth, they made it clear from the start that wasn't the case.

The problem is that Google disables your content if you go outside the us. Can be really annoying if you purchase and download a lot of content to bring with you when traveling. This is not the case with amazon kindle or iTunes... You have to be pretty stupid to buy content in the play store IMHO, except apps of course.

I'm curious. For example, you 'own' the Transformer movie.
If the entire movie is downloaded to your device (or a book for that matter), vs. streaming, and you enter into a country where there are licensing restrictions on the movie, would it still show as being available or would it disappear?
Has anyone run into this scenario yet? My assumption from the OP's post signified that the content was being streamed and not already downloaded onto the device.
That would be akin to you buying a bunch of movies, TV shows, songs onto your iPhone/iPod, and as you travel around the world and you can only listen to them in 'certain countries'.
Cheers,
Kermee

Booted my Nexus 7 via VPN so I can get the credit on signing in. Downloaded the books offline. After I switched VPN off play books and magazines disappeared so I would say yes on those.

I can understand google preventing users from buying content when outside the covered areas but to prevent users from using the content they have purchased just because you connected to a wifi network outside the us is stupid. This makes a Nexus 7 a no no device for travelers. I love my Nexus 7 but not even Apple does this if you travel with your iPad and have books and magazines on your device you can enjoy them anywhere, after all you paid for the content. Google needs to fix this for travelers.
The first Nexus 4 that I purchased was using a vpn and my debit card issued in my country (Dominican Republic), I used to enter the google play web from my pc using the same vpn but one day i forget to turn the vpn on and for my surprise, when I went to the google play page I had full access to all the content like apps, movies, tv shows, music, magazines, and devices. Ever since I had been able to purchased a few more nexus 4 to friends.
At the same time my Play store (in the phone) got full access too. I don't know why nor how this happens but I totally like this. I have asked many friends to enter their play store to see if they had access to movies, books and such but they only had access to Apps and Games.
I FEEL LUCKY!
As for Google's Music service, I know it can be bypassed to work any place but lately I have been reading that some people couldnt use the new All Access service because they were in unsupported countries. I tried to subscribe today for the free trial and boom it works perfectly.
this is me been lucky or there is an explanation to this?
thanks.
Did you shipped the N4 to an American address like I did?
After I purchased the 2nd N4 for my colleague, Google assumed that I am either an American citizen or live in the States.
Since then I have also full access to the play store incl working wallet.
Funny part: I tried last time to download a localized application for Taiwan, Play store told me that this program is not available in my device country.
And this is only for 1 Google account.

nice! that is exactly what i did,,
also I gave a giftcard to my girlfriend like 1 month ago, and after redeeming she had access too.

Google is no more using IP address to get the country of user. They stopped it about 3 months back. Since you used to use VPN to connect Google thought your country of origin is US and since now they have stopped checking IP's it doesn't know you are not from US.

As I know, not a chance! A shipito, or something like that would be necessary. Or, in my case, a fast trip to US...
Who's getting one?! I think this thing has a lot of potential to make some waves:
http://lifehacker.com/chrome-unveils-the-chromecast-an-hdmi-stick-for-stream-897062318
I was hoping it would let you mirror your device but it basically turns your Tablet/PC/Laptop/Android into a remote. Allowing you to queue up videos and send them to your tv wirelessly. I think it's pretty cool that you can queue up stuff and continue to use your device for other things. Perhaps someone will be able to hack it so it can mirror your android device?

People have been reporting that they just walked into best buy yesterday evening and asked for them and was able to purchase them. During the announcement yesterday, they said it would be available at Best buy starting on the 28th. Seems like most stores already have them in stock, you just have to ask for it specifically.
I grabbed mine at Best Buy this afternoon on Long Island. It's really awesome, especially with the 3 free months of Netflix. You can stream local media on it as well. I'm using Plex media server for that, and you can also stream Amazon Prime Video too, so it's a really versatile solution for really cheap.

To be fair, I believe that the "cast a tab" functionality is still in beta. Perhaps it will be optimized with time and performance may improve. Also, it uses 2GHz wifi bands, so it could potentially be affected by other 2GHz devices in the area.

Best Buy
Best buy is where it is at. shopping cart by customer service. what a great deal. using chrome to stream i am on my desktop over 40 foot from my rougher on my desktop pc pushing video files with no problem. also the tv is 15 ft from the rougher that is 40 ft from my desktop. also i have found when pushing from phone or tablet you can reboot and netflix keeps on playing. i give it 12 stars out of 10 great job google. i hope soon we could do screen share from our devices or pc's {playing games on a device that is charging with moga pro! That would be sick!!}
I just picked one up at Best Buy. They still had a few left in stock.
They also gave me the 3-months of Netflix (it prints out on the receipt). Pretty nice since that promotion was discontinued. I didn't really have a particular need for it, but at $11 (after Netflix discount), it was a no brainer.

Is there any way to properly cast Hulu without a Hulu Plus account?
I'm rather unexperienced when it comes to both Hulu and the Chromecast. I have a free Hulu account without Hulu Plus.
On the Play Store, I could only find a HuluPlus app and a japanese Hulu app, so I'm assuming there is no regular American Hulu app for the free content.
The Hulu Plus app wouldn't let me log in with my free account, so casting from my phone or tablet seems to be a no-go.
Casting from Chrome on PC is a pain, as you can't use your PC while casting in full screen, or it will revert to a regular window again.
Using a trick from Lifehacker to use the Pop out player to cast full screen isn't satisfactory, as it comes with black bars on all four sides of the screen and is terribly slow.
Is there no way to cast regular Hulu to the Chromecast? Another Hulu app I am unaware of or maybe a third party app?
Nope no way to do it without a Hulu Plus account from a phone or tablet.
I personally find Hulu Plus worth it.. Yes you still get ads but they are greatly diminished and the amount of content it opens up is a good value for what I'm interested in.
On the pc, can't you alt+tab out of the stream? It works with other players

I do regular Hulu through PlayOn and Avia to CC. Looks pretty good and supports subtitles.
So you use Playon as a DLNA server playing Hulu, and then Avia to cast the DLNA stream to the Chromecast?

Yes, works pretty well except for the common problem with PlayOn that you can't easily forward/reverse video. Pause works fine though. Another advantage of PlayOn is that it uses VLC player so can play basically any local video format.
All the PlayOn channels give CC the closest thing to a Roku experience to this point.
So if I understand correctly, you can watch all kinds of things through playon, but playon requires a paid subscription, right?

Yes.. I want you to be very very aware of PlayOn.. They are a incredibly corrupt company.
Absolutely DO NOT PURCHASE the lifetime subscription. You'll never find a EULA or ToS agreement on PlayOn's site. They have changed the lifetime plan more than twice and left users in the dust. I'm one of them.
I paid for a lifetime subscription to Hulu and whatever was in PlayOn at the time and none of that is included any longer.
If you must deal with this company, the yearly sub is the best run for the money. I have a counter-press release ready when this company releases their ChromeCast plugin to warn people of this, but I figure that of you are interested in this option, you should know about this corruption.

I won't even purchase a yearly account if that is the way they do business....not worth it to me

I've only tested PlayOn briefly a few years ago, and it didn't work with my Samsung Blu-Ray player at the time, so I didn't pay for it. But I've since mentioned it to a few other people who use it now, and I've never heard about this.
So tell us more. What exactly is the problem with their lifetime subscription? What are the two times they left users behind? Are you referring to when they switched from a one-time purchase to a subscription model in 2010? And when they added the PlayLater PVR feature that wasn't included in the basic subscription?
The lifetime subs were changed when PlayOn went to HD and when they went to the subscription model.
The way they rolled it out to users is by a lifetime sub and you'll be fine, one month later they left all in the dust. I'm not even sure what PlayOn basic does, but it sure doesn't do hulu.
When they left the users behind for HD, I can imagine it went the same way.
Very very corrupt company when you bait and switch your customers in a regular basis
