Hello gents and ladies
I have been using the LQB version of the Serbian official Jellybean update since it went out on Sammobile. Though I am experiencing some unpleasant things which I wish to get rid of.
I use this phone for basic things such as listening to music, browsing, texting and calling but I was negatively surprised that this firmware has lots of issues. At first I had problems sending and receiving messages, then the phone started acting weird when I tried to multitask (switching from the music list to the message box) then problems with the camera that has big issues with video recording and also video playback (video playback is a general issue, not a camera specific one). I have also had problems that lead the phone acting however he liked and freezing for long periods of time.
I just wanted to ask: is there anyone here that has the time and kindness to point me a ROM that is ready for daily use and to hand me a completely noobish tutorial on how to install the ROM?
I would also like to specify that I have installed the LQB firmware accordingly - reseted the phone, restored to factory settings and setting the render 2d thing from the developer options.
Thank you very much and I would really appreciate the effort of an useful reply.

Just take look in the Development Section, there's now a lot of ROMs to choose from... You can try Pure Vanilla, JellyMod, HarshJelly or LightJB... they are all good :good:
Or wait for about a week and give my ROM a try
And as for any ROM, the installation is quite simple.
First things first: root your phone.
You can root it by flashing the zip file Shaaan provided in the Original Development forum. Flash it through temporary CWM ( also by Shaaan in that section )
We're getting fired up now.
You're now rooted.
Flash the ROM:
1. Put in sd card
2. Boot into recovery ( vol up + home + power )
3. Select: apply update from external sd
4. Flash temporary CWM
5. Select again: apply update from external sd
6. Search for your file
7. Flash it
To enhamce your performance flash a kernel.
I'd suggest Pure Vanilla with CoCoreE 7.0!

Hey guys, thanks a million for your replies!
I do also have another question: I've lost my SD Card (phone was starting doing crazy stuff so I removed the SD Card and put it in my wallet but I can't seem to find it anymore now). Is there anyway I can root without the SD Card (Odin maybe) ?
Thank you,
Adrian

As far as I know, I don't think you can do it without a sdcard... I have heard of Mobile Odin - but I don't think its compatible with SGSA....

SD cards are not that expensive.
But in CWM you can flash from internal storage too! So try that.

Thanks for the advice, but:
1. What exactly is the definition of CWM? I have seen it around here but I couldn't figure out what it is.
2. I would like to avoid doing experimental things since it's my only phone and I don't wanna brick it or do permanent damage to it.
Thank you!

CWM aka Clockworkmod Recovery. It's a custom recovery used to take nandroid backup, flashing roms, etc. Search for a thread in general section for more (it pinned up there so it's easy to find). There's another recovery which serves the same purpose as CWM which is TWRP (team win recovery project). You can use either one of those and the only difference, twrp is touch screen while cwm uses the keys on the your device to navigate. However, there's now a cwm touch which basically cwm but you can navigate by touch.
As long as you follow the steps correctly and take necessary precaution, you have lower chance to brick your device.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply, it really helped. So the CWM is the recovery mode? (The one that is similar to the download mode?)
I'll probably give it a shot, but I'll have to read the tutorial carefully.
Thanks again!

CWM is a custom recovery image.
It allows you to flash .zip files which are not signed ( which is impossible in stock recovery ).
There is a tutorial somewhere in the Q&A or General section of the forum you should take a look

Hi there guys. As you probably noticed,i'm new here,so pardon me if my question sounds noobish at the time, but I promise I'll learn from you guys! Thanks!
So,the question's simple. How do I update my phone's firmware? Don't wanna brick or possibly damage my phone here,as I just bought a couple of days ago. So,is there any risk to update the phone's firmware? Thanks bros!
Have you use search features before asking this question?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111771
Yeah, saw that already, but it seems to convoluted for me. I need a one-to-one kinda reply. Honestly,I didn't understand anything that was written on that page. So,could please someone clarify it in a more simple, noobish, way?
Thanks bro!
pdf guides are included in the kit. just follow them
either you can use KDZ or R&D for the official
or flash any custom ROM with CWM
(the tutor is already out there)
and the risk ? bootloop or brick maybe
Thanks bros! And another thing, what are custom ROMs? I keep hearing about it like Cyanogen? What's the upside for using it?

Custom roms in simple terms are unofficial versions of the o/s modified or "cooked" by people who want to add or remove certain features or performance tweaks. The upside is you can find a ROM that suits your usage and aesthetic preferences. For more info read through some ROM threads and compare their features.
However there is always a chance something could go wrong even if you know what you are doing. So my advice would be to read and re read the instructions from rooting to flashing radios to flashing roms and look up the termanology until you think you understand and then read it all again. There are some good guides around that can givevyou the basics.
Otherwise you can wait until your carrier releases a official update.

Thanks for clarifying bros!
And another thing,I just saw this vid at Youtube.
It's called "How To Install CyanogenMod 7 On Your Android Device"
I can't post the link here because im still new, haha!
Is it really that easy to install Cyanogenmod on your phone? But your phone have to be rooted first, right?
I saw the list with the firmware from various countries, but not mine,Malaysia. How do I solve this? I'm still suck with V10-a,which i think is the oldest firmware for OB.
Also, what are these baseband, kernel and build number thingies? Anything important? Thanks! Really starting to get interested in these things!
I think the following is related to malayians so you have to use an indonesian firmware :
http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/tool_mode_country_check.jsp?model=LGP970&country=MY
- you can flash firmwares anytime whatever the situation
- to flash a ROM (cyanogen, nova...) you need the custom recovery mod called ClockworkMod alias CWM (available on the market via ROM Manager app, or my kit)
- and for CWM, root access is needed
once phone is rooted and CWM installed, phone potential is extended to the infinite. you can then install a lot of useful apps of more and customize your phone.
I think the general goal of all of that, is to optimize and extend possibilities as far as possible and then you'll be able to say that you "truly own" your phone
Thanks for clearing that up bro. BTW,would you recommend me using Gingerbreak to root my phone? Since i'm using an older firmware,it should be ok,right?

Ouh,wow, did that felt stupid, haha. So what you're saying is,after rooting my phone,I should get to installing ClockWorkMod Recovery,am I right? And the only way to install it is using the computer, connect it with the phone, and execute the UPK that you have provided in your download link. After that,I use the app,EzBoot,to boot into recovery mode,is this correct?
After that, what will I do in the recovery mode? Thankies again!
all right. as I said earlier, the recovery mode extends phone potential in an easy way. many ROMs and mods must be did via recovery. in fact, CWM helps you flashing files, roms, doing backups/restorations and more. jump the step and see by yourself.
don't forget to backup before anything

All right! Will root my phone as soon as my charge hits 100%! Using gingerbreak! Is the root reverse-able? I mean, can I unroot my phone once I root it?
you don't need 100% battery as long phone is plugged. for now, blackjack doesn't have a reverse process. but gingerbreak, yes, considering the fact you stay on v10a/b. you may try with the new superoneclick. the most radical method is still flashing a firmware (so you'll lose all stuffs)
and yes, backup any saveable thing. although CWM saves all datas, more safety is more safe

Hi guys, first of all, yes I'm noob, but neither I'm dumb or lazy. All I'm looking for is being pointed in the right direction, and some help in understanding how to upgrade the phone to something different than a paperweight or brick, whichever you prefer..
I've been considering upgrading my X8 with a custom ROM, and been reading a lot, but info is still very confusing, and in some threads downloads aren't available anymore. So i decided to create this thread and try to sum all my questions at once... If you could point out some easy guide links, I'd appreciate.
So.. Here's where I'm at.. I already rooted my phone and unlocked the bootloader. And now I'm stuck..
I dunno how to properly backup my data (i want call log, messages, images, apps, etc...), neither how to backup my ROM and stock kernel.
Also i find the flashing kernel and ROM process still a bit confusing. Dunno how to safely proceed to upgrade it.
And finally I'm confused in which ROM i should choose. I've looked at MiniCM10 with JB, but there are some minor bugs. I also saw SEMC Debrand Engine, ICZaraki and SonySX ROMs that looked great, but i'm unsure which will be best for me. I'm not looking for flashing it many times, in preference, I'd love to do it only once, and get it right at first. All i want is a fast, stable, bug free, and good looking ROM.
Thanks.

Just make backup of your rom before doing else ..
And if you want fast and stable.use cm7 or gingerdx ..

1. ROMs are constantly updated when a more stable version has been built.
2. ROM can be backed up in CWM recovery (or TWRP if you are using it). Just go to Backup and restore and select backup.
3. Images that are stored in the sdcard are not deleted unless you format it.
4. It's pretty much impossible to brick (the coma brick) a phone while flashing ROMs. You may suffer from bootloops though, which is what we call a soft brick. Just make sure you factory reset and wipe cache partition (or whatever the particular ROM requires you to do; that's why there are instructions).
5. Good luck.

the choice of kernel depends on which rom you're planning to use. some roms can be used on top of different kernels, so you may have to test them for yourself first.

Hello again,
I decided to go with MiniCM10, but i want to partition 2Gb of my 8Gb SD card for swap and apps, and i'm a little confused..
According to:
needs a clean install of miniCM10:
flash JB kernel
in CWM, go to mount&storage :
then, format /system, /data and /cache (so that kernel can use the new partitions size) any data on phone memory will be lost
set up your swap:
==> go to /advanced/Partition SD Card
if you don't want to use a2sd, then choose the minimal size for ext, and the size you want for SWAP
it will FORMAT your SDcard ! any data on SDcard will be LOST
and install the rom
swap partition should work
what doesn't work is the swap info menu
Click to collapse
All my SD card data will be lost, is this true? If so, how do i proceed to backup and restore my backups to my sd card?
I also read this in SIII ROM:
how to partition your sd card:
first
download this new link: http://easeus-partition-master-home-....softonic.com/
its free and you need it to partition your sd card or any other partition tool
8GB as a guide just change to sd size
1. back up your sd card to pc/laptop
2. open partition tool select your sd card and resize to 6gb
3. now with unallocated space make a new partition in ext3/4 2gb (make sure that both partitions are primary NOT logical )
4. now format both partitions
5. now put all your files back on your sd card. windows will only see the 6gb fat32 partition don't worry thats fine

Would this be applicable for MiniCM10 ROM swap procedure? It seems so much easier..
Thanks again for all your patience in helping me understand what i'm doing and guide me in doing it right.
Thanks!

Hi.
Firstly, i should start by apologizing for my stupidity and complete failure to be less... useless, when it comes to my phone.
I am selling my Galaxy note, which is rooted and has ICS Stunner 2 on it, with 'cwm-based recovery v6.0.2.7 (if that helps)
My issue is, Before selling my phone I took out my 'external SD' card and decided to reformat/nuke my internal SD, thinking that the firmware would remain intact and the thing would still be useable if i repartitioned it or whatever.. Again, a bit new to this..
Anyhow, half way through formatting the internal SD the process was interrupted. I can boot the phone, but when I do anything that requires use of the internal SD (saving photos, downloading apps... and in cwm recovery, even factory reset) it wont work
In fact, when I try a factory reset it says 'Error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure
I would love to know what I am meant to do to fix this, and of course am willing to provide any info you may need to help me out here..
As i was typing this the phone got sold and I am now running against the clock to make this work...
please, help!
Thank you so much and I again apologize.

Hi all,
Im usually pretty good with roms but i now realize i also can get ICS on which has opend a whole new world for me and suddenly i find myself in the noob seat yet again..
Im trying to install the newst Paranoid Andriod which i assume is this one:
pa_p990-2.6-08-newbl-tonyp.zip
I have downloaded the zip file as i do with all the other roms i have tried. I boot my phone into recovery and brows the SD card where i choose to install the rom. The installation start and after som time it pops me back into the recovery menu and nothing has happend.
I have tried to delete everything
I have troed with Miui version 4.3.2.8 and opti-trust 1.3A and those did the same..
Im suspecting that i missing something more deep with in the os. Maybe a kernal update or something? Maybe i have to update my andriod to ICS but i can't find out how to do that..
After allot of tried i finally managed to screw up my phone and had to recover back to a cyanogen mod i had stored on the SD card.
currently my phone is running with
Andriod-version: 2.3.7
Base band version: 1035.21_20120521
Kernal system: 2.6.32.55-Cyanogenmod [email protected]) )
Mod version is Cyanogenmod-7.2.0-p990
Version number is GWK74 (don't know if you need that)
can anyone point me in the right direction??
Sincerely
Offerlam
To start with, if you're using CM7.2, then you're on the old bootloader.
If you try to install new bootloader roms, the best that will happen is that they will not work.
Check which bootloader a rom is for before installing
Edit: You may have messed up your partition layout by flashing new bl roms. If this is the case and you are having issues, you will have to use the AIO tool from the development section to fix it.

Thank you for your answer but i need it to be dumped down ALOT more... like i know the technical term for a bootloader but what constitute a bootload on andriod? is this a bootloader P990_Stock-ICS-v28g-v3.01-standard.zip? I guess that must be ice cream sandwish? if so i tried to install it from the recovery prompt on the phone but that didn't work... perhaps i do have that patition issue you mentioned?
You have to download the old bl version of PA for your case
1. If you are unable to install/use any ROM properly after trying pa_newbl, it means that partitions have got messed up, and you need to:
Download AIO toolkit, install nvflash drivers in that, put internal_sd_fix from AIO thread and ROM zip file in SD card, then select option 4, and follow the process. Select old/gingerbread bootloader when asked, and cwm version of your choice. Then put a ROM flash int-sd_fix and the ROM in recovery.
2. If your partitions are ok (you are able to use cm7.2 properly), just wipe and flash pa-oldbl version (download link in same thread).

My CM 7,2 works fine so i guess i have to go with option 2 BUT
Wouldn't there be other benefit by changing my bootloader to a newer one?

the recommended way is
wipe data
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
format system
flash ROM
flash Gapps (some prefer to reboot after this...I never do that)
flash the latest stable Kernel (usually Kowalski Kernel)
I am sure you can get past the start screen.....
Note: First time boot takes longer with this ROM....so stay normal
TRY to keep the battery more than 70%...so you can finish all this work without any power issue.
hope this helps my friend

HI..
How to i format the system? is there a option for that in the recovery console?
and thanks for your steps... they really clarified allot for me..
I havne't gotten a answer on the bootloader thing. I was suggestet to keep running with my old bootloader but wouldn't everything not work better if i ran with the newst bootloader or does that not matter?
Is bootloader = Andriod version? say Ice cream sandwish is a bootload? can you say that?

I don't wish to be rude, but the answers to all of your questions are available to you if you search. It would probably be faster for you to do so than wait for an answer to be fed to you anyway

I have a samsung galaxy exhibit II 4g. I would like to root it and put Cm10.1 on it. can anyone point me towards a step by step? I've done it on the nook.
OK well first you need two files 1. A custom recovery cwm or twrp 2. Grab the rooted stock file located here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686384
Flash your recovery reboot wipe everything then install the rooted stock file when it boots check and see if superuser or su is installed if so your root and then find the rom you like wipe then flash then your done.
Make sure you back up your contacts photos or anything you need before wiping or it will be erased.
Please note to those who's going to say there no need to wipe i do it to avoid any fc's taking the extra step aint going to hurt.
I would also make a nandroid backup just in case

You can just flash a ROM after you install a recovery. No need to root a ROM you are just going to replace.

Not all ROM are rooted unless stated in the op
still no answers-please help
I have asked a few places, all wrong I am sure of it. Newbie! I have successfully rooted. Successfully been using 10.1. I am just having a hard time getting the swap sd function that is right for this phone. some zips don't show up on my sd card during recovery. so that just tells me I need to try something new. I even tried starting over and attempting slim bean and aoim 1.0. these weren't there either. For fear of totally jacking up my phone. I will stick with 10.1 I like it and it is working.
to make a long story short. anyone know of a sd swap that will work on this phone? please include instructions if possible. I am loosing my mind. and I know it has to be a simple fix and probably a really dumb oversite on my end, I can admit it. I need my music and need to take pics that I can save!
Thanks guys

yes please
That would be awesome! Is there anything special to remove 10.1 and are the gapps the same?
For best results wipe 3x flash ROM then gapps. Whenever you flash a new ROM you lose gapps unless they are included.

no matter how many times I wipe my sd card and re copy the zip files over, they aren't showing up on my sd during recovery mode.
