I just wanted to share my project that I been working on. I installed a nexus 7 tablet in the dash of my 2013 Chevy Silverado. I completely removed the factory radio. Installed an aftermarket amplifier for audio out to the truck speakers. Working steering wheel controls for audio playback.
Redoing my install. I bought a case for the tablet and fiberglassed it right to the dash.
Still have more sanding to do...
I would advise against using the case I bought. The fiberglase/bondo does not stick to it.
I'm currently running:
Kangarom
Poweramp
Pandora

This is really nice! Thanks for sharing.
I am thinking about doing the same thing, although I just recently installed a nice aftermarket Pioneer HU.
But it seems like my car's screaming ANDROID at the moment
Could you please share how you managed to get steering wheel controls working?
That would be awesome.
Thanks!

Steering wheel controls work using a joycon exr connected to a usb otg cable then to the nexus 7. Here's a link to the site you can order it from. There's more info there too.

Great stuff! Thank you.
This is a very cool project and good work! If I wasn't such a poor graduate student I would consider doing this with maybe a galaxy note. My Mazda 6 dash is too small I think to accommodate a tablet. Thanks for sharing!
Very nice setup man.
I also have a Silverado and just began my install and just started working on the mounting process but im a little stuck. Do you think you could provide more detail about how you mounted your nexus? I bought a $10 double din kit off eBay but it doesn't really fit too well so I need some new ideas.
Thanks!

I used some epoxy (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000PELVT0) to glue the frame of the double din kit to the kit. I then used a dremel to cut the the front of the kit to the desired thickness I wanted for the frame. Then used some plastic and the epoxy again to build a case around the tablet. If I have time after work today I'll take mine out and take some more pics of it and upload them for you. I pretty much only used the frame and the parts that screw to the truck from the kit. The rest is some other plastic I had and the epoxy.

Any car with a console big enough to support a double-DIN headunit has room for a 7" tablet. That's almost exactly how big the opening is.
Thanks that would be great. Any other ideas on how to mount it would be helpful too.
I got a webcam to work in the daylight by attaching some sun glass lens to it. I'm not sure how it will fair in the dark tho.

For triggering the reverse camera...the joycon exr that you can use for the steering wheel controls can also be used to trigger the camera. It looks like the droid4 oem moto car dock attaches to the base with a ball joint. Can someone who has one disassemble it (should just be able to unscrew the tightening ring) and measure the diameter of the ball?
Also, can you post some pictures of the dock from the back? It's possible that the dock clips onto the ball somehow, rather than having that part built-in. I'd like to know that if possible.
I'd like to put together a permanent installation dock for my wife's d4 for christmas, but I can't find any pictures of the back to see how this hooks up. So I have no idea what adapter to buy.
Alternatively, anyone have any luck with any other docks (d4-specific if possible, I hate those big ugly universal clamp docks) and can tell me how those mount?
Thanks in advance

My full written review is there as well. In short, its the best wireless keyboard I have used. Definitely worth the asking price of $55.
This is my first YouTube video, so there is much room for improvement. I plan on continuing to review various android hardware and accessories should you wish to subscribe. Let me know if you have ideas!
Great video review. Is the back part / empty plastic really just for the stand or are they hiding components in there? It kind of reduces from it's portability. Do they make that part of its plastic removable?
Have you tried it with the nexus 10? If so, does it sit well like the galaxy?
Nice review. Too bad about the home key. Get a sleeve case. I'be seen them at "5 Below", if you have that store. And yeah, it's $5.
I have a Logitech k400 IR keyboard. Works well but connects through OTG cable. Bluetooth would be better.

No there are not any components in that area, no. I wanted a stand really bad though because I dont have a multi angle case though.
Yes, I used this with a nexus 10 for a while. It actually fits better than the note. I think its because of the grippy material, but it doesn't slide around as much as mine.

For some reason, I left my brake wire unconnected and it works just fine without any warnings when I hook up my phone either immediately before or after the Head Unit turns on. However, if i were to hook up my phone some time after the AppRadio has been turned on, then it will show me the warning screen. So I left it unconnected and just hook up my phone immediately. My AppRadio 2 is a US version too.

Go to samsung site or newegg and buy the 5 to 11 pin mhl adapter. Don't buy from ebay as you may get a fake unit and end up with snow issues.
S3 and note 2 needs 11 pin and the pioneer android kit uses 5 pin mhl.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Or just return that pioneer cable which costs way too much and just buy the Samsung 11 pin mhl adapter and any hdmi cable. It's way cheaper and you can get the official Samsung adapter from the Samsung site with the 50% coupon.
the pioneer kit doesn't work with the s3 is cause its a 5 pin when the s3 needs an 11 pin.
Thank u for reply. My pioneer cord is already install and i got it for $35 off Amazon. Do u have a link for the adaptor? With that adaptor my phone will work and charge at same time? Also wondering what a tasker app does and which one do i download? I heard that the tasker will do everything once phone is plugged in and turn off screen too. I really liked the fact the dock could do audio out and charge via the pogo pins, so I figured that would be perfect in the car. When I got the dock, I couldn't find a good spot to mount it....until now. The completed setup works awesomely!
All you need for this project is a metal bookend and some JB weld.
Bookend
Dock attached with JB Weld
Piece removed from the cover bezel
Wires fed to where the back of the dock will be
All I did here was wedge the bookend between the radio and dash kit, and then attached the cables for power/audio
BACK TO THE PRIMITIVE!!!!

Nice ... as long as you do not drive ..
Works fine when driving. The pins actually make better contact if the tablet is pushed slightly forward, so I bent the vertical part of the bookend to keep it slightly forward. Plus the rubber on the rear of the nexus making contact with it seems to create enough friction to keep it from popping up.
WARNING: Turn down your volume.
Good to know this works. I was planning on doing something a bit similar, but slowly building it up to be cleaner in the end. The dock will be an integral part, though.
Do you have any trouble keeping the tablet charged? I know people have no problems if they use one of the recommended chargers from the charger thread, but I wasn't sure if the dock may hinder or slow down charging any.
Awesome! Thanks man

Well I have it set to keep the screen awake while charging, so it does still drain the battery. It really isn't bad though. Barely goes down. The speed of the charging seems equivalent to charging via usb connection, rather than the wall charger.

Sorry for not responding for so long. I did have a bit at first when going over bumps, but over time it stopped. I think it's because the pins springy-ness calmed down over time. Also, the bookend helps keep the tablet from moving, because the rubber backing of the tablet makes contact with it and keeps it from too much. So over time, this setup has ended up working perfectly.
I have the same setup. Do you constantly have to enable media output to dock? When I start mine up each time I have to go into the sound settings and fix this.

Has anyone seen any kind of tech, case, housing, or attachment that adds sound to both sides of the phone, similar to the HTC one? With such a gorgeous screen this phone is perfect for Netflix or movies but I hate having to Cup my hand around the bottom of the phone to improve the sound. Also not always in the mood for the complete isolation that earbuds enforce.

Yeah, or even just some sort of device that snaps onto the sides. And either redirects the sound of reproduces it. You're right tho, it's prolly a pretty small market. I just wish LG would have followed HTC in that respect. They seem to have put a lot of effort into the quality of the sound the phone is capable of handing but didn't care about how well it reproduces that sound.
