Yes you will have to re-lock your bootloader and flash stock recovery and be on a stock rom take the OTA
So simply locking the boot loader will allow OTA update if you are on Stock Rom is it ?
I also have TWRP Recovery installed - There is no need to remove that ?

Got Stock with Goodies 4.3 - Working Great so far !!
I'm running stock rooted and everytime there is an OTA I flash back to stock recovery, install the OTA, flash back to TWRP recovery and let it install SU. There is no need to relock the bootloader.

I am stock rooted S-OFF Locked Stock Recovery and I use rootkeeper. Just backup root take update then restore root.
I got my phone to this state by
REVONE Unlock and S-OFF
Booted into (But did not flash) TWRP to flash superuser
REVONE LOCK (Not Relock)
Install rootkeeper from apk store and backup root
Now I can stay stock and rooted.
***In the event that root keeper fails I can always use the S-OFF to zip update the recovery to TWRP and reflash superuser then reflash stock recovery.

Today I unrooted my phone and relocked it so I could update my phone to 4.4.3 but every time I try to update it the phone will boot into fastboot mode and it reads "security warning" under where it says "Relocked". It does that every time I want to go to recovery.

You need a stock rom and stock recovery for the OTA to work.
I'm using both a stock rom and a stock recovery.
Why are you trying to boot into recovery if you have the stock recovery installed?

The screen will read "Entering Recovery" for 1 second then goes into fastboot mode.
Might want to try installing the stock Android system recovery again (doesn't sound like you have a recovery installed at this point). Sounds like that's what your issue is. You can also use a RUU to get back to stock and then take the OTA update.
To run a RUU, would I need to unlock my bootloader again?

No.
Well, I tried to run RUU and FUU and both of them failed. I can't get passed step 1. Can I install a custom recovery and try again?
Make sure the firmware version of the RUU matches what you have installed. If you need a reference hit the second link in my sig and scroll down to the section regarding Hboot versions.

You need to reinstall the stock Android system recovery to take the OTA update. Also need to be on a relatively stock ROM to take the update.
How can i reinstall stock recovery rom. Is tbere any option to keep twrp and install new software version

I just got my sprint m8 hk edition 2 days ago, after which I htcdev unlocked, rooted, s-off'd(tried firewater got whelped) used sunshine successfully, flashed captain throwbacks latest twrp, then proceeded to debloat. After I got the notification for the 1.54.654.13 update I fastboot flashed back to stock hk recovery 1.54.654.9, and got that ota installed and only had to reroot was still s-off and unlocked. Fastboot flashed cap's twrp again, then I got the ota update for 1.54.654.15(didn't realize this thing needed so many updates, I now know I still have 2 or 3 more to go) So I flashed back to stock hk 1.54.654.13 recovery, tried installing 1.54.654.15 and it reboots and tries to install it makes it to about 25% then the pic of the phone gets a red triangle and I have to hold pwr and volume up to reboot. I've redownloaded and reflashed the stock hk 1.54.654.13 recovery multiple times as well as deleting the ota update and redownloading it 3 times to no avail same result every time. Soooo, my question is do I even need to update step by step? Or should I just download the latest firmware 2.16.654.4 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173 and install thru my pc. If so, I believe I need to relock my bootloader then ruu to 2.16.654.4. And last question, do I lose s-off by ruu'ing?

You do not lose S-OFF ever. Only way to go back to S-ON is by doing is manually.
I believe it was the first or second OTA but you had to be completely on the stock ROM (the OTA looked for certain .apks in folders and if you didn't have them [ie. you debloated] you can't OTA).
Since you're S-OFF just go flash the latest firmware (no need to relock and RUU).

You can get the firmware zip that doesn't have the new recovery so you don't have to reinstall recovery again either. If you don't have the H/K version it is this one you should download from OMJ's thread:

i did fastboot rebootRUU then fastboot flash zip firmware.zip it ran thru and after I rebooted my wifi won't turn on and my software version is still the same and my sdcard is borked too heeeeeeeellllllppppp
Not sure what to tell you about your Wi-Fi or SD card issue. Are you using a custom kernel? As far as the software version goes, that won't change by updating your firmware. That will only change by flashing a custom ROM. Software & firmware are not the same.

did you unlock the bootloader and root? Its not a problem with TWRP. Since you have received the OTA sounds like you didn't do any of the requirements to install TWRP. I would do some research on Unlock Bootloader, ROOT.

TWRP isn't going to let you install the OTA file. You need to update your firmware. Flash lastest TWRP in Hboot or fastboot. I would read this thread here.

To upgrade you need to flash lastest firmware then ROM of your choice. To make that happen you need updated TWRP. The ruu is your OS and firmware, you better care.
I got an OTA update named OTA_M7_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_TMOUS_7.18.531.35-7.18.531.2_release_450302.zip with size about 180MB.

Should post this question here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2305490
and the answer is probably yes since I don't see why T-mobile USA would push an ota update only to you
7.18.531.35 is the t-mobile US equivalent of 7.17.1540.35 which is the latest version with the stagefright 1.0 vulnerability fixed.

You need to be on 100% stock rom including stock recovery to install ota updates. Better to return to stock using a ruu before applying the update imo since many users soft bricked their phones when attempting to install lollipop ota updates on stock rooted phones. If you need the RUU, look in the RUU collection thread, there is a 7.18.531.2 RUU posted there (link in my signature). Don't forget that questions should be posted in the q&a section, not in general. :good:
Thanks for your help. I found the RUU for my version. So, since I need to go back to RUU flash, I will need to re-setup my phone from scratch again just for getting this OTA....sucks!!
I wish they would make it easier to update modified phones. Just overwrite my root changes to /system and destroy my recovery but keep my /data and /sdcard. I can recover from that much faster than doing RUU and set up from scratch!!
So, on m7, isn't there way to flash stock on /system and stock recovery through fastboot and then take the OTA? I have done that on at least Samsung and Moto phones in the past and it worked fine.
So, if I restore system and boot partitions from my backup to stock, can I sideload the OTA ZIP using TWRP?
I should have made a recovery.img from the original stock recovery partition. Do you know if I can find the stock recovery here somewhere?

Yes, either using a RUU, or a combination of a stock rom/backup (/system partition) flashed using twrp and then flashing the stock recovery back.

already uploaded here:

or you can extract it from the ota update.
It was possible to update a stock rom + rooted phone simply by flashing the stock recovery back in the past (on kitkat roms and eariler) but it looks like its not possible anymore on lollipop updates. So much ppl posted here with the same problem: "Phone is stuck at HTC splash screen after installing update on stock rooted phone". Example here and here
The biggest problem if the ota install fine but the phone is stuck at the booting screen (like in the link above) is that your firmware will be updated to 7.18.531.35 so you won't be able to use the 7.18.531.2 RUU anymore unless you achieve S-OFF or edit your MISC partition.

Thanks for the great help! I can't thank you enough.
One question: if I do fail to apply the OTA zip after restoring boot, system and recovery to stock, I will still be able to get TWRP back on the recovery through fastboot and restore my full TWRP backup to get a working system back, right? Is there a gotcha in that route?

Hey,
I wanted to download the OTAs to my phone, and the update goes directly to recovery. I think I have removed root from my device by using the full unroot option of SuperSu after which I factory reset my phone.
How to remove recovery and basically download and update the OTAs?
Cheers!

It may depend on the current phone OS. With Lolipop you will likely have to RUU the phone, with KitKat you may get away with just flashing stock recovery.
First you will need to post output from "fastboot getvar all" so folks here can help.
Use aroma recovery it will back you to stock recovery , then relock your phone after that you can install ota updates .
I'm thinking about rooting my moto one power but i want to stick to the stock rom for various reasons.
Although, I'd like to have xposed and a few more tools which require a custom recovery.
How to fully unroot my device for the update taken that twrp can't flash stock rom updates, or how to get and install ota updates after having root? Will data loss be a factor?
Please guide me.

You're wrong, if you use twrp and magisk OTA's will fail
Boot into TWRP and flash Magisk. In this way you will retain your original recovery and also be able to flash magisk.
I did this with my Nexus device 3 years ago (I used SupeSU) and was getting OTA updates each time. The only problem was that I was losing root every time I would get an OTA update.
I don't know how Magisk works but if it works the same way as SuperSU did in this case, then you will be able to update your device via OTA.
You may try this if you want to, as I don't know whether this method still works or not.
fastboot boot <twrp-recovery-name>.img This will boot your device into TWRP recovery without replacing original recovery.
Then just flash Magisk and reboot your device. You will have your stock recovery intact.

Magisk reflashes itself after OTA updates of Lineage thus going by that, the device should lose root access once an OTA is flashed. Thats just a theory though!
