[Q] LG Optimus Black LGL85C (Straight Talk) upgrade from GB to ICS - LG Optimus Black

Hi,
I'm an Android noob and I did read “[HOW TO]The Big N00B how-to!”. I'm a somewhat advanced Windows 7 user, I taught myself Fedora and I'm confident I can learn Android. I am not a programmer or developer.
I just made the leap from a dumb phone to a smart phone, I wish I did it years ago. I have Straight Talk which is a partnership between Tracfone and Walmart. I've used Tracfone for years so I decided to continue with them. I purchased an LG Optimus Black LGL85C with Android 2.3.4 which is the same as the P970. I bought an older style model because I liked the features and there is an ICS 4.0.4 upgrade available.
The back story on what I've done so far. I tried to upgrade using the LG mobile Support Tool. It downloads ICS then stops at install telling me to contact LG Support. I contacted them and I was told I have an Optimus Black P970 made to be distributed in Germany so they cannot do anything. I live in the United States. I was told to call Straight Talk, they told me they have nothing to do with the operating system and cannot do anything.
I then tried upgrading using the KDZ Firmware Update EN Tool and the V30B_00.kdz file. That did not work crashing because of some sort of conflict with msxml4-SP3. I installed msxml 3, 4, 6, and the msxml technet fixit. Nothing worked so far so I gave up on that method for now anyway.
Now I'm contemplating using the SmartFlash Tool. I downloaded the LGP970_V30B_00_AP.bin and the LGP970_V30B_00_CP.fls files. I do not want to screw up my phone and I'm not really looking for a custom ROM to install. I am open to it though after I do more homework. Here are my questions:
Can I use the P970 ROM on my LGL85C phone?
Is there a newer official ICS ROM with the latest updates that I can use? This one is from December 2012.
IF so will I get OTA updates from LG?
Is it safe for me to follow the direction on this website hackmyandroid named "Official ICS Update for LG Optimus Black P970 Rolling Out – Install Manually on Your Device"? I cannot post the link.
I rooted the phone using Framaroot.
I installed SuperSU Pro, BusyBox Free and Rebooter.
I'm going to install ROM Manager Premium and ROM Toolbox Pro
I'm Thinking about installing BusyBox Pro and a few others.
I know they have more tools than I need but I'd rather have more at my disposable than not enough.
If I'm not going to get LG updates I might as well think about checking out custom ROMs.
Any help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Norman

I assume this is firmware I can use if I fail incredibly badly.

ICS has some issues, mainly:
- the touch screen becoming unresponsive (only solution is to pull the battery)
- GPS is broken for many
- Sluggish behavior at odd times
- dialer issues ( zero as first number, dial tones not working with prompts on automated systems)
I got tired of playing and decided for stability. I had too many missed calls at inopportune times due to sluggishness, and pulling the battery every time the screen was unresponsive was old.
The final straw was when I was trying to get through on an automated line with key tones.
I couldn't take it any more and re-installed Marvel 9, and have been quite happy ever since. It's stable, runs all of the app store program I NEED, and is lively and responsive. Zeus is fairly solid too.
If you want to "play", have fun with ICS or an ICS-based ROM.

Hi,
Thanks for the info, I've been reading and learning a lot. I'm interested in something fairly stable that can be updated. I'm not ready to "play" yet. I need to read and understand things before I do something. I like to learn from other peoples mistakes. Learning Linux I couldn't have cared less how many times I crashed it because all my stuff was on Windows. Now I very rarely go into Windows. I don't have that option with Android though. I'll figure it out though.
Norm

"stable that can be updated".
Google is shifting most things to the Play Store. The Android OS version isn't completely essential, as long as the applications you want will run. I strip the installed ROM down to bare-bones, then install what I need from the app store.
Unless LG is going to patch ICS (I think LG is done with the P970), I see no advantage of ICS over GB in terms of security - provided you only download from the Play Store. Some of the GB-based CyanogenMODs (2.37) for the P970 might actually be better if the latest batch of security patches are back-ported.
I worry about stability first; I don't have a land-line in my home, and my cell phone is not a toy.

Official Google Nav for 1.6 and above in Market

http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/23/google-maps-navigation-officially-comes-to-android-1-6/
When trying to download onto my phone from the Market, I get an error message 'Package file was not signed correctly.'
I'm running Cyanogen 4.2.5 on my Rogers Magic 32A.
Doesn't work for me in denmark
I think this is only US.
It's been released for the Market on all devices, but I think it has something to do with our devices using test-keys and not release-keys...
Thoughts?
Same problem in Belgium with 32A using CyanogenMod 4.2.5 with Kernel 2.6.29bfs.
Very sad
working fantastic on my MT3G running Dwang 1.13. Didn't get an 'update available' notification, but installing it from the market worked flawlessly. I gotta say, navigation with google layers is freakin' awesome

I have the same phone and ROM version and it updated just fine from the Market. However, I did push the software to my phone, following the instructions here. Not sure if that's why it works without issue.
So i guess its confirmed that this is still US only. BAH
"Some features of Android 2.0 are not available on Android 1.6, for example, the ability to use the "navigate to" voice command as shown in our demo video. However, you can still create a shortcut that will allow you to launch Navigation and start getting directions to a specific place from your current location with just a single touch from your home screen."

ugh...
If it is US only, why did they not restrict it to the US on the market ? Or maybe that's technically not possible with the current market configuration ?

Or you can search the Market for 'Nav Launcher' and it will enable these features through an external application. Works fine for me.
Same issue on a Mytouch 3G (32B,) in the US and also running Cyanogen 4.2.5.
This is a fresh install of cyanogen as well (literally nothing more than the 1.6 base image and then the cyanogen update.)
I'm also getting the "package not signed" error. Not sure what the problem is. Running CyanogenMod Android 1.6, but I honestly don't remember what version of Cyanogen it is.
This official update no different than the 1.6 hacked Maps w/Navigation that was pulled from the Droid dump.
Even if you can get it installed, you still need to use either Directions shortcuts or the Nav Launcher to get it working outside the US.
I keep getting errors cannont remove / no such file or directory
on cyan 4.2.5 seams like nothing different from 2.0 droid nav
I sure do wish that people stop giving apps 1 start because it doesn't work on cyanogenmod..... these are precisely the people that bring down heat on developers with their crying. God forbid they have to do a search on the net... and, dare I say, read 3 lines of text.
People need to realize we are not flashing official software here, and so we have no right to b*tch if something that's made for official software doesn't work on our hacked ones. There is not one dev here that I can remember who doesn't clearly say that if you break your phone it's your responsibility, not his, or the manufacturers. That's why we have this community here, if you're having problems most members here will help you out however they can because that's what this place is about tweaking our equipment as much as possible and fixing it when we mess up. I would say most people here enjoy helping others out with tech related stuff, I know I do in whatever way possible, but I have no sympathy for those that can't be a$$ed to read a few lines and just want to flash their phones with total disregard of what could happen.
How do you think google feels everytime they see a one star rating on one of their apps, or any other app, that works perfectly fine on official images when the person comments "DIS SUXXORS, IT B NOT WORKING ON C.M 4.2.5"? It's a miracle they didn't crack down on cyanogen much sooner than they did. PLEASE, PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE if you have issues with something you downloaded from XDA or any other site on the net that deals with this kind of stuff, don't go complaining to your mobile carrier, or whoever developed your mobile's official software; come here and ask for help... besides 99% of the time I'm fairly sure that we'll do a much better job of helping than anybody you can contact from your mobile carrier, or official developers. Also, if you brick you're phone be responsible for you're mistake; don't try to be sly and send it in because it's not working to your dev because again this only attracts unnecessary attention to this site. I'm fairly sure that cease & desist that xda received from MS a few years back was due to precisely this.
I've customized windows mobile, palm, symbian, android phones, plus ps1, ps2, ps3, psp, wii, and so far I've never brick anything, or at least not to the point I can't bring it back, so does this mean I'm super lucky? or super smart? Not really, it's quite simple really my secret is this: READ, Read like your equipment depended on it because quite frankly IT DOES.
Sorry for the rant guys, it's not directed at any one of you, but maybe just maybe one of these "people" will find it and correct themselves. I'd actually wish the mods would post something on the main page, but then again who am I kidding the problem originally arises from them not reading in the first place.
I agree.
Also not working on my phone (32a Magic). Currently looking for a work around.
I have searched for:
Google
Google Maps
Google Maps Navigation
Navigation
Etc, Etc, Etc...
and can NOT find this version in the market???
I updated to the latest "Google Maps" from the market, but it does not have the NAV Features.
AHA!
Redownloaded and now get the "Package Not Signed" error as well.
CyanogenMod-4.2.5

Call lg support now

If there are any things you want improved in the software call the support now
My complaints:
Bluetooth does not work with third party software and is unreliable in general.
This has been fixed on other phones with the same broadcom bt chip via custom firmware.
USB host needs software but the hardware is capable.
(same usb controller as motorola xoom)
F-Secure's annoying sound every time it finishes a scan without finding viruses.
(LG is the customer not us so they have to force them)
End your call with asking the case to be elevated.
I've called them with little luck but if we all do they have to fix it.
1. Would be nice if they would give you the option to "repair" your phone in LG update software. Sony Ericsson's Update software allows you to reflash your phone with the newest firmware, even if its already present on the phone.
2. I would also like support for the mkv container, would save me some time remuxing some videos. And while we are at it, recording in FullHD should be 1920x1080, not 1920x1088.
3. The thing I would like the most would be a pure Android OS, without all the LG stuff (Facebook for LG etc.), F-Secure and such. This way I would be able to choose the applications that should be installed on my phone.
My few "complaints", other than that, best phone I have ever had
Then call the support number on their website. The message they gave me is that they are wayting for feedback before they release a patch

According to what I have heard the Android OS that is running on the LG is as "close" to Vanilla Android you will get with an custom UI. So apparently LG is not too deeply rooted in the OS as say HTC are.
The public reasoning for the close to stock approach is because they want the hard core of the android development community to program for the device another example is the unlocked bootloader and easy rooting. Sure you loose your warranty but its easy to do.

Great thread, magfal. I hope users here use their voices & inform LG of all the bugs they've encountered. I'm glad LG wants ownership opinion, & now it's up to us to push for change.

It's totally true. There's no framework integration except for:
Music bar in shade
Font engine
Toggle buttons in shade
Graphics
It's completely unlike Sense or Blur, you can simply remove the bits you don't want and replace them with stock Android stuff (except the actual framework).
There no extra system process or services running as a result of LG framework mods on the O2x - it's a "raw" as it can get whilst still being an "LG Phone".
The only things that are tightly integrated are the Music controls and font management and you can hardly blame them for that, they're better than stock Android. My problem is that the music controls only work with the LG Music app so they're useless to me (PlayerPro). Modding this is what resulted in my temp brick...
Lets keep on track here but the issue i see as the most important in your post is the ability to use the player controls with third party music players. Call lg and tell them what you think they should improve

Bloat Freezer - issue

Hey guys, today i tried to open bloat freezer, and i got the message that needs update, when i clicked to update, i got the message that is not available at the market.
I checked market via pc and i found it, but its not available anymore for me for installation
(although i have already bought it). So im wondering is it closed for me or for any P990 users ?
any1 have experinced the same ?
Just checked as I have it installed as well. I can't see any issues with it but I have it set to auto update.
Still seems to be appearing the the market.
I had the same issue and by installing another rom it disappeared but don't ask me why because it came back on another rom. I think it was on the mdc rom's
so try to install another rom.
Deinstalling the app won't work i already tried that several times
Bloat has been blocked from the market. Dont know why, but there seems like the app is doing something Google isn't happy about, as they have blocked/removed bloatfreezer two times now...I have been in contact with them, and got the following response. I decided to but MyBackupPro instead, as it gives the same possibilities and alot of other functionality as well
If you are an old customer that is having problems upgrading to the
latest version, instructions are below, please continue reading. If
you are a new customer with another issue, you can ignore this email
and I will respond to your email as soon as I can.
As you have probably noticed, Google removed the original Bloat
Freezer from the market for a stupid error in the app's description.
This makes it impossible for you to upgrade normally to the latest
version. There is nothing that we could have done to prevent this, and
Google refuses to reinstate the original app after we fixed the error.
We apologize greatly for the inconvenience and want you to know that
we love our customers and want to make this as easy as possible for
you no matter how hard Google tries to make it!!!
Below are instructions to get us the info I need to transition your
purchase from the old version to the new:
1. Go ahead and purchase the new version that is in the market.
2. Go to checkout.google.com and find BOTH the original order number
and the new order number and email both of these to us.
3. We will then refund your purchase for the original order ASAP.
4. You can then continue using the new version and get updates as
normal forever.
Once again, we apologize greatly for this inconvenience and are doing
this the best way possible. We hope that you will help us get back to
our 4.7 star rating by leaving a rating AND a comment in the market so
that others know that the new Bloat Freezer works just as great as the
old.
Thank you for understanding and sticking with us through this speed
bump that Google threw our way, we appreciate each and every one of
our customers and will be doing lots of manual labor to get all of
these orders transfered.

Says right in the OP.
Thank you.
Will give it a try this weekend.
Cheers
Is it stable?
My updated, rooted, CWM 5, Honeycomb is so stable right now I am afraid of trying a new ROM but at the same time I am very curious. Is everything running smoothly? What is better in your opinion?
Thanks and keep up the good work for us, users. (no idea how you guys do these modifications)
CWM 5? where did you get that?
This is for the streak 10 and not 7, are you sure you're on the right page?
Clockwork Mod 5.0.2.7
You are right. My bad.
Thank so much!!! It would be even nicer if you keep Quickoffice HD pro.
Was quickoffice preinstalled?
I dont recall as I have it though amazon (it was free for a day)
first thank you for making this rom
I would like to know may ics be available to streak 10 pro in the future
either official or cm9
coz I may buy it in a few days
thx in advance
I would imagine ICS would be eventually made available, it's too new to not recieve it.
I would recommend against buying a s10 unless you have specific reasons to get one vs a different tab.
I only got one as a companion to my s5 and s7, there's better alternatives unless they're not available where you live. (All t2 tabs are more or less identical, main thing is rom support)

I live in hong kong and streak 10 pro is selling at about usd 280 in china (where i can easily go across the border to buy it). Before that I have considered Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire (ask my friends to buy from us for me)
Compared to other tablets (samsung SGT 10, asus TF) it is about two third of their price. I would mostly use the tab for web browsing, pdf, ppt and little gaming.
ICS upgrade is not essential for me right ? But I would like to know the support of non-HD 2.x apps on the 3.2 system ? Can they be run on the tab ?
ICS would add very little if you're already on 3.2, it's mainly to bring phones to parity.
For a tablet, ICS can be considered android 3.3. It adds lots of small things, but overall it's not a huge change. I couldnt recall offhand from the release notes or the presentation anything major for a tab, it's either bringing phones to parity or new hardware specific.
Most apps will run fine, i've yet to see one that doesnt work at all (but most of my apps are at least tablet aware and some are HC native apps), worst case you can play with the scaling button and it'll think you have a giant phone.
At least the price is dropping very quickly, it's original MSRP was ¥2999 or ~$370 where you can get a gtab10 for ~$400 on ebay. Under 300 it's reasonable, but you're saving on the rom support. The gtab and tf101 and xoom and the like have massive communities for rom support. But this depends on where you live, as being in HK means you dont really need to import it might be a reasonable buy.
My rom is pretty simple, and yet I dont expect anyone else to make anything more complex, much less release it on xda/somewhere visible outside china.

"I would recommend against buying a s10 unless you have specific reasons to get one vs a different tab."
I agree with you!!
I need feedback from users that have installed it, it seems that the install script may be causing install issues as it's flashing back to back and putting in pauses might make it run better.
I have not actually tested the entire install script, I only know that the images it's flashing and the commands are good. BUT I run each line manually so there's always a delay.
I need input from more users in this regard.
if I install Chimeradroid ,after can i return to original stock rom without problems?
must I place extracted content of nvflash and chimeradroid 32, in the same folder?
in your guide..in Upcoming features:
•Long term: Languages available on the Streak 7
this includes italian language too?
how much time you estimate can it be implemented?
I dont currently have any plans to as it's extremely tedious to do so.
There is a script to back up your current rom in the package. You should run that even if you do not wish to install Chimeradroid.

[Guide] Updating your Huawei Ascend P7-L10 to Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop)

After going through days of Googling, asking people, researching, digging through XDA, fiddling with my own Ascend P7, I've finally managed to fit all the pieces together and make it work properly with the latest Lollipop update. It's posted on my blog because I might update it in the future and it's easier doing it there than maintaining a thread here on XDA. At least for me...
Article:
https://rejzor.wordpress.com/2015/12/03/update-huawei-ascend-p7-l10-to-android511
If you need any help, ask away here or on my blog, I don't require any registration so it's easy and fast even for those who aren't registered on XDA.
Followed the instructions. Worked like a charm.
Only exception was that I just did b839 update from the phone updater. As it gave me an option to DL and update from B830 > B839 as soon I turned it on at B839 step... was a 70-80mb update size, compared to the one you linked which was 1.3gb, entire thing.
Also what's the simplest way to root the phone now?
Yeah, you can use OTA updates, but I wanted to be sure and decided for full versions. With OTA you have to strictly follow the iterations where with full versions you can skip those in between. But since I haven't actually tested that I didn't want to write about it because things might behave differently then.
worked like charm, thanks! too bad we can't get rid of the emui though.
I honestly don't know why people hate EMUI so much. It has a bit of getting used to it at first, but after a week or two I liked it so much I never looked for any other launcher. It's smooth, really well and logically organized and simply works. The lack of separation between home screen and app drawer is actually pretty good. I just tossed less used apps in folders on last page and the more used ones on first 2-3 pages. Dunno, I really like it. Plus, it comes with tons of really useful features otherwise only found on rooted phones via 3rd party apps (the app firewall for example so you can prevent data transfer as well as roaming for individual apps).
