Moto X has me worried for Nexus 5 - Nexus 4 General

It seems Google has been so on point with nexus 4 and new nexus 7 plus all the updated apps I truly don't understand the point of the moto x. I mean at 200 on contract why would anyone buy this phone. Even though Google doesn't make the nexus why compete against yourself.
I have a feeling the nexus phone might either go away or not even be anything major this year. Its almost November what new processor would go in it. I am thinking this year the nexus 5 will be made by HTC and cost a lot more.
For some reason I like the material for the new nexus 7 and would like that as the back of the next nexus.

Wasn't it confirmed that LG are making the nexus 5? Usually oems get two shots..... I liked the lockscreen on the moto X

I mean, are they serious? Do they really think this is in the same league as the Galaxy S4 or iPhone 5 available at the same price?
I'm worried about a Nexus 5 now too. Cannibalize sales with a Nexus device or price the next Nexus way higher. Only the former is appealing to me and I'm sure it's not to Google.

I think the moto x is going to be a Microsoft kin type of failure. Is there some hidden features I am missing? HTC one, s4, new iPhone and even the nexus 4 are all better and same price. Why release all these versions like who cares for a dev edition x. I was thinking this phone would be free on contract and that would be the selling point.
Highly doubt a new nexus happening this year. I see Google just making the dev phones now.

LG said no.

Nexus 5 will be made by LG and so the Moto X does not have any bearing on it, or the Nexus program until such time that Motorola becomes a Nexus manufacturer.
This is just Moto still sucking. Not as terrible as before, but still bad.
Google needs to just take full reins of Motorola and turn them into a pure hardware arm of Google and not try to please everyone and end up pleasing no one.

Also Moto X is only going to be released in the US as far as I read, which makes sense as its made in the US and customization from other countries will take time and effort.

Oh, I see. I don't see why they won't make their phones through Motorola since they own them. Better than paying Microsoft for phones that profit other companies.

I think Nexus 5 is the last project of the Nexus. Then Google completely focused on Motorola phones.

Since the Nexus 4 is rather faulty imo (both H/W rev. 10 & rev. 11) - bad battery performance, getting abnormally warm during normal use (hate it), poor software optimization etc, I doubt that Google will keep rolling the nexus project along with LG. Samsung were fine partners.

Not quite sure what you are talking about. If you are facing all those problems, try using stock everything and see if the problem persists. There are 6 Nexus 4s among my family and friends and we dont face any bad battery performance, any stutters or anything. We are all on stock.

You never had a HTC One X? This gets way hotter than the Nexus 4.
Plus Nexus 4 back is made of glass, which is the reason you feel the heat more. All other phone such as HTC One and Samsung S4 has the same problem. This is due to the Snapdragon chip, not because of LG.

why not in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021559]

After owning a HTC One and moving to the Galaxy S4, I went back to the beautiful White Nexus 4. The feel in the hand of the nexus 4 is superior to any phone I have owned even though it has some lower specs

not worried here, Moto X is aimed to completely different kind of users, Nexus is aimed more for developers and Android Fans, Moto X has a locked bootloader and will be distributed via carriers. I think that the challenge is for Samsung or HTC which sells devices in similar conditions (not to mention apple). I Also think it depends of the kind of user you are.

Completely agree. Although i own both HTC One and Nexus 4, i find myself using my Nexus 4 more than my HTC One.And if Google was to make it their last project, they may as well go out with a bang! I'm talking Sony Xperia Z water proof body, Nokia's 41MP with 6 or 7 (i dont know how many they have now lol) elements camera lens, and full AOSP OS = my dream phone.
Behold The Google Nexus Lumia Z....is what i'm thinking lol.

I just want the moto x to be ported

Everyone something new comes out everyone starts complaining. So what that the moto x is running near stock with some cool features. So what that battery life is supposedly improved. So what that the camera is far superior. So what that Motorolas radios are usually really good. So what that benchmarks are on par with stock Nexus 4. So what that there will be a 32 GB Model. All the things that everyone complains about with the Nexus 4 is improved upon with the moto x. I love my Nexus 4. But I'm really tempted to get the developer addition depending on the cost. My concern is that asop based roms will not have all the features working since I'm sure all the teams are closed source

Google X family to replace Nexus family?

With so many shifts happening in the industry (like Samsung shifting to Tizen and away from Android, BB 10 OS, Ubuntu, etc) there is now talk of Google going against Samsung and Apple with an upcoming Google/Motorola X Phone to be announced at the I/O meeting in May during the anticipated release of Android 5.0.
Some are starting to speculate that the X Phone may not only be the next flagship device for Google but also the X family which may replace the current Nexus devices ( phones, tablets).
What are your thoughts about this? If true, do you see yourself making a jump to this rumored X Phone?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Google just started the Nexus 4-7-10 system two months ago.... I really don't see them changing anything, even the name to X, soon.
Besides, Motorola's designs are hideous (not quite as bad as Samsung's, but still pretty bad). I really don't want to see that X phone if it looks like other Moto phones. Give the next Google phone to HTC.

X-phone is a rumour for now. No one is sure if it's true. X if true is being built by Motorola, which recently pulled out of lot of markets couple months back. So it can't be a hit.
My guess is it might be a device for Verizon.
From Nexus 4
From a complete business perspective, any time is good to create a new line built off of the success of an older one. In fact, its much wiser to continue that method in rapid succession rather than to delay it. If sales have plateaued I'd consider it totally possible, and applaud Google in the process.
Of course, this is all just speculation.
I personally like the designs of moto, I loved my dx-2 and every other moto phone I've owned. In my experience they have a solid feel and a sense of quality.
There are many theories out there on what this X phone is going to be but the shifting landscape esp. regarding Sammy and Tizen makes me wonder if Google is cooking something up in house (w/ Motorola).

my guess is that its gonna be the next nexus device and will be branded as such, but google is going to push it as a phone for consumers in addition to the developer/android lovers phone the nexus line is known for, they are already starting to do it now with the nexus 4 but they would go all out with the x phone, so my guess is it would be on all carriers and available through the play store. theres not really any evidence that it would be revealed at the google i/o, maybe the x tablet will be revealed then to replace the n7. i think it would be released closer to the holiday season like the nexus 4
i think we can all agree it will be a helluva phone regardless if you like moto or not

4 is an unlucky number. First the S4 pro is the last of its series and a few months later is replaced by a significantly more powerful successor(mpdecision is a joke, the radio is a joke). The Nexus 4's launch was terrible, people still can't get one and there are rumors about halted production, and we can't forget the thermal issues. Our last strike being Qualcomm's lack of open source code for the S4 Pro which practically contradicts the purpose of getting a Nexus-experience. Might as well go with Tegra since openness is lacking from both.

I loved the processor on the Galaxy Nexus. At least that one doesn't run hot while playing the game Flow.
I can't play Flow for more than 30 minutes without it being extremely discomforting because of the processor burning up.

I think all companies can make great phones if they focused on making one device a year instead of 12 like the iPhone is always going to be a top tier device but Samsung will work on an s3 along with others like galaxy victory note 2 galaxy camera plus TV's and other electronics.
The nexus and the X are closely related in terms of names so I don't think nexus will be abandoned. Nexus emphasizes on the X (jellybean boot animation for example).
They just started a number system so they can go to letters since its going to be different like the Nexus X but... Since moto is Google's company and "droid" has these dramatic commercials they may market it as the "Droid" collides with "Nexus" and the world explodes and then they show NEXUS written in droid red letters and fade out the NE and US leaving X glowing.
Lol it looks beautiful in my mind hopefully my writing expresses that.

Google Nexus X
Not that large of a change. Similar to the scheme they adopted with Samsung. Nexus S and GALAXY Nexus. The Droid X series by Motorola was popular so if Motorola made one it would make sense as a name (or as a good speculation for a name)
It would also follow Apple's ditching of numbers with the new iPad.
I was planning on buying the nexus 4 in a few months. I shouldn't have to worry about this new nexus coming out into the end of the year right?

I agree but to expand. I wish that they keep it a solid family. Hate to compare but like iPhone.
If I buy a nexus on a 2 year contract I expect at least the first year to get all updates. People have the iPhone 4 and aren't in a hurry to get the five because its almost the same but I was going crazy when I was stuck on GB and ICS was out.
Like the droid RAZR, RAZR maxx, RAZR HD, RAZR HD maxx, That is 4 different models that are 95% the same but yet some won't get jellybean when others do.

Yeah what the heck is going on with that.
Im thinking the nexus 4 is going to be great. Even Google preview video with the guy talking about the nexus phone being the best nexus and abandoning other nexus from the past and now they "ditch it" within 3 months.
First off. Google should never have contracted with LG. You are a big company with big demands for a high profile device and lg can't make more than 5 for launch.
The N4 on Play has "sold out" tattooed on it since an hour after launch.
Samsung had the same with the s3 but it took one month then it was back in stock and never left.
I gotta say LG dropped the ball on this one.
http://www.androidauthority.com/nex...focusing-smartphones-nexus-5-included-146707/
I sure hope that they don't call the family of products "X what ever" because it almost sounds like a ripoff of apple and all of their "i products". That would be like Google referring to android as "Aos". Very lame.... Nexus just sounds better and means connection or link. That's a pretty cool name, that your product is your link to the world.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
The nexus brand has always had "X" as the logo.
My Nexus one had the X boot animation. So an X phone is still very relevant to Google and if they are going to start manufacturing their own hardware it makes sense to distance themselves from the existing nexus program.
New age.
New name.
I dont see that happening anytime soon. As someone above me said, Google just launched the Nexus family and people are beginning to recognize the name "Nexus". Why would they abandon that ?
Also, Samsung is certainly not moving away from Android. They are hitting record sales with their Galaxy line of phones and theres no point in ditching Android.

As much as I despise HTC for pairing with at&t to lock their phones harder than iOS. I will admit I do want the HTC one, but I don't want the "developer edition" or the carrier version. I probably would spend money for HTCs hardware with google's say in the matter. (fastboot oem unlock) for example.

I'd probably wait for the Nexus 5 and if it disappoints, then hopefully the HTC One and the SGS4 will be cheaper by then and I'll pick one of them up. Even better, we'll see how the dev scene plays out for these "Google Edition" phones and if the updates are truly from Google and such.
There is a thread for such discussion: [DISCUSSION] Google Nexus 4 vs any other phone
I am generally interested when the Manufacturers are willing to bring the Nexus experience to one of their phones.
Might not jump on this one, but it is a good start.
The Nexus 4 is still powerful enough, and I want to see how the not-so-smart button setup of the HTC One is used with a Nexus Experience version.
Cheers
i dont think i will ever get a non-nexus phone. i mean, okay, htc releases a pure vanilla phone, which will get updates. but android is developed primarily for nexus phones, thus android on nexus phones will be the way it was intended.
plus i dont even consider samsung phones because of their build quality, and im fairly unsure about htc's poor battery life.
only thing that could convince me to do a little detour of nexuses is the moto x phone. if it ever comes out with aosp and good battery life (only thing that bugs me in my n4).
Yes, god yes it's like the ultimate phone. But a lot depends on the timing. If it's launched after the new nexus or just a month before it not a good buy. But if it's launched in a month from now..

I'm still planning on buying the N4 and re-evaluating my options when the Motorola X phone comes out. The N4 is just cheap enough to do that. If I dropped $600 on a phone, I'd feel like I have to keep it for a few years.
I'm definitely keeping my Nexus 4. I just love this phone too much. I'm still not clear as to why anyone would buy the Google Edition of any of these phones. If you want that phone, buy it. If you want the Nexus experience, buy a Nexus. Some will argue they want stock Android on that phone's hardware, but I don't get why.
"Expandable storage!"
Is 64gb of expandable storage really worth $300?
"Better hardware!"
Has anyone really maxed the Nexus 4 out yet? We're getting diminishing returns on our hardware nowadays. Now, I can understand future-proofing, but you could get a Nexus 4 now, and a Nexus 5 when it comes out and still be around the price you'd pay for the GE of the One.
Those are the main points. There are always things like screen, speakers, hardkeys, and heck, even location of the audio jack that could sway the decision. I just don't think those minor differences are worth doubling the price of the phone. The Nexus 4 is by far the most bang for your buck, which is why I will be staying in the Nexus line until I don't have the option to.
To each his own, I guess. Plus, with the GE of the phones, ROM developers can develop their ROMs for these phones easier I suppose. That's assuming the OEMs will release the source code for their version of stock Android, since it isn't technically AOSP. And think about it: do you think these companies are willing to release their proprietary drivers and kernels to the general public for development reasons? Maybe, but I've grown cynical over the years.

I agree with you 100% on all of your points. I dont know why people complain about storage. You just have to be smarter about what you have on your phone, be realistic about it. You don't need 10 HD movies and 40,000 songs and 150apps at the same time. I've been smart with my 8GB N4 and i don't regret it at all.

Improvements over Nexus 4
-Built material (aluminum/plastic vs glass/plastic)
-Superior front facing speakers
-Better low light camera performance
-Optical image stabilization on camera
-1080p res screen
-IR blaster (assuming it ships with API for it...don't think it's in stock android)
-capacitive buttons (giving more usable screen)
-Larger battery (2300 mAh vs 2100 mAh)
Minuses vs Nexus 4
-no wireless charging
-possibly less development support
-higher price than N4
Am I missing anything?
Not at that price. I'd consider it @ $400... maybe $450. While I like HTC's build quality and materials, it's just not much of a value for me over the N4.

Trading their nexus by DEC.

i wanna trade but idk i love this phone so much
Getting the next Nexus. Hopefully made by HTC or Sony.

Don't think the Nexus 4 has enough trade value to do a one for one trade for the phones you mentioned.

I know, I love it too....that's why the only thing that'll make me get a new one before N4's EOL is a Sony Nexus. I absolutely love their hardware! I'm actually kind of impressed that LG did as well with this one, too...I've never exactly been a fan of anything LG makes, but man do I love this phone

i know not a direct trade and no one would trade those phones for a nexus 4
but i meant trade as in sell/ trade w/cash , etc.

yea i was a bit iffy about LG making this at first, but im very impressed with it.
And yea sony nexus would be nice
and most phones now pretty much have all same hardware (as far as flagship devices) sony makes some sexy looking devices
only thing i wish is the nexus had a 5 inch display :/
I will never buy another phone that isn't in the Nexus line as long as Nexus is being made. I came from the iPhone 4 to the Nexus 4 with zero experience in any Nexus device, or even Android in general, and I can tell you that pure Android is the best Android. I have a bunch of friends who hate Android solely because they bought a low-end phone that was running an outdated version of Android and had low specs.
"Yeah, but you should buy those Google Edition phones! They're so good and still show off pure Android!"
Yes, but at the same time, no. It's what AOSP 'should' look like, but it isn't truly AOSP. The OEMs still have to input their proprietary drivers/kernels to make it compatible with that hardware, so it's still customized. Android is developed for the latest Nexus device, and Nexus is made to show off the latest Android. I will sincerely buy every Nexus device that will ever be made because it is so open (and cheap). The freedom granted to OEMs, or end-users, is ridiculous. One line of code to unlock the bootloader? For real? Why WOULDN'T you buy Nexus? Come on.

Historically, not all nexii are as cheap as the N4. Just ask galaxy nexus, nexus s, nexus one and google one owners who bought devices from play. They paid an arm for their devices!! I love google's new subsidized price strategy, but it's just that....new I hope they keep it up, though, because I whole-heartedly agree with you!! I'll buy every nexus released as long as they are affordable in their prices.

I don't own a N4, but I do hope they keep the same price range as I will be buying a nexus for my next device come January. Hopefully there will be a N5 at that time with the same price I will jump all over that.

Bought my wife the Galaxy S4 yesterday. I love my nexus too but dang that phone is RETARDED fast. I mean, I didn't really notice any lag in my phone until I played with hers but there is a hint here and there. Even with my animations and so forth turned to .5x
I could flash Cyanogenmod and be good to go. I mean I had the EOL idea too but now I'm rethinking it. And to think what goodies may come in the fall. The Galaxy S4 LTE-A with a 2.3ghz processor.... REALLY.? Omg.. I dunno we will see I guess. I do love my phone but it's hard to resist hardware like that.

For me at least I know I want the nexus cuz I don't want to pay for all the extra stuff that I won't use like waiving my hand around like a monkey to use my phone. Anyways if I were to get a s4 and use cm10.1 on it what's the point of spending twice the amount of a nexus for when I can have a better version of cm10.1

Staying with the N4 till the N5 arrives...
Another vote for keeping the N4 until the next Nexus.
Thanks may be an option too. I'm excited to see what the future of Google and Motorola may be also.. I think the point of putting Cyanogenmod on Galaxy S4 would be the better specs of the S4.

In my opinion the n4 is the best phone available especially since it will get official/unofficial updates for 3-5 years or so,
Sent from my Nexus 4 @1.944 GHz on Stock 4.2.2
Well it seems that the S4 and the HTCone are not going to get their updates at the same time as us Nexus owners, Google says
On background, we will be working very closely with Samsung and HTC on future software updates for these devices and they will receive software updates shortly after a new version is released.

This makes it one more reason why I will stay with a true Google device.

Goodbye Nexus 5!! Google takes Nexus 5 off the new "Google Store"

Google announced the new Google store but the listing of Nexus 5 is gone .
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2015/03/meet-updated-chromebook-pixel-and-new.html
Clicking phones on https://store.google.com/ take you to the Nexus 6 listing https://store.google.com/product/nexus_6
The Nexus 5 has no place on the new site. This was speculated a while ago but just the feeling of it being off the store is awful.
I love the Nexus 5 with its quirks, endless issues and powerful specs at the price we never imagined.
Yep, not available for sale anymore https://store.google.com/product/nexus_5
I really do hope they replace it with another 5" device.
I'd love for there to always be both a "normal" phone and a phablet in the Nexus line.
Especially since I have no desire for a phablet, and I've only ever purchased nexus devices. I managed to skip the Nexus 6, but my N5 definitely won't last another year after.
I think it was taken off sale on purpose to push nexus 6 sales, me personally id rather have the 5. The 6 is nice but i know from nexus devices they are usually cheap and good for performance with a few corners cut, I couldn't buy the 6 for its price knowing there is better phones out there at a cheaper price

Loved my Nexus 5. Loved it. Slightly bigger screen (5'2"), bigger battery, it would have been perfect.
I sold it for the Moto Maxx (same specs as Nexus 6, also made by Motorola but 5.2" and 3900 mAh battery) but I still have fond memories. And my wife loves her Nexus 5.
For the specs it had and the price, it was fantastic.
yup , its gone from indian play store too ..
We will see it return.. Stronger and faster than it was before..
Cue Six Million Dollar Man theme music.
who knows? maybe there will be Nexus 5 2015 edition hihihi :fingers-crossed:
The Nexus 5 will still be for sale new on Ebay and Amazon among others. It's not going anywhere for a while. You can even still buy a new Nexus One if you wanted. Just because the play store has stopped selling it means nothing.
There will be.

I hope so. 5.5" screen, 4gb ram, and whatever fast 64bit cpu would work for me.
Farewell to NEXUS 5

Everyone has their own opinions....its mine...."discontinued" feels bit low..
I seriously hope they continue with the 5 inch Nexus series. Nexus has the best development community by far. We get all the new roms and features way before other phones.
I fear developers will jump ship to another brand if the only available Nexus is a 6 inch...

Technically discontinued is right. But I'd assume since the Nexus 5 is better or probably on par with most flagships nearly this long after it's 2013 release, people consider it as like a limited edition phone.. I'm on the fence. While I also feel that technically it is discontinued, I also feel like the value of the Nexus 5 may slightly increase because it's still a great phone for development and it's going to be harder to find, and the Nexus 5 IMHO was probably the best Nexus phone released to date, the Nexus 6 is a phablet and honestly don't know much about it's successor based on it's size I immediately figured it would be the wrong phone for me, plus I've heard the Nexus 6 had it's share of problems like any phone. Nexus 5 had their initial batches which were flawed in design somewhat and they updated the form factor for it.
(very proud to say I have a 32GB launch edition white Nexus 5 btw)

May as well call every discontinued device "limited edition".
