Hey guys,
After much research it looks like we might never get an update to JellyBean. I'm thinking about going with one of the custom roms, but have a few questions.
- What are the drawbacks? I see that most people mention losing WIFI Calling and TouchWiz.
- Since I only have 100 minutes, I use talkatone (w/ google voice) for free calls using wifi/data... will losing the wifi calling feature effect this?
- Does losing TouchWiz mean losing support for some of the Note's features (especially with regards to s-pen related features)?
Talkatone and WiFi calling are independent of each other. You can use talkatone.
The s-pen functionality is still there and it works fine. What you lose are the samsung s-pen apps such as s-memo and s-note. There are suitable replacement apps available in the play store. Stylus gestures are only in the ROMs released since June I think.
Also, latest jellybean 4.22 is unstable with the chipset the note is built on. There are occasional random reboots, some graphical issues. Recommend that you either use a 4.1.2 ROM, such as CyanogenMod 10.0, or a 4.2.2 dated from mid April or before, which is when the instabilities started. So CyanogenMod "experimental" or "snapshot" or M3 (three names, same rom) dated 4-11-13 works pretty well for me.

Hi, i have a Verizon Galaxy tab. I was interested in flashing a new ROM. Does anyone know if the tab has a Sim card? and which is a good ROM? Has anyone successfully flashed a ROM where everything worked? I use my tab in the car and need 3g, gps etc. But im itching to flash a kernel and a new ROM. Anyone have any advise? looks like most of them are for GSM and not CDMA. Please Help!
The Verizon (and Sprint) SGT does not have a SIM card as they are CDMA devices.
There is a small handful of ROMs available however at first it was pain getting started flashing the CDMA SGTs I've messed with.
Personally, I like oldmacnut's ROMs.
However, I'm currently running KhasMek's kernel and the stock ROM (just until oldmacnut finishes his GB port) - Also, running LauncherPro to hide that awful touchwiz interface and Dolphin Browser HD (for better browsing) - This has made the SGT loads better for me.
My advise to anyone looking to flash ROMs (even as unlikely as it is) if you're note 100% okay with the possibility of a brick, then don't flash. Personally, I've never encountered a bad flash I couldn't recover, but your milage may vary.
Thanks Addictive,
I am also waiting for stable GB roms for my VZ Tab. But I need to flash a nice kernel and a ROM. Even though the rooted tab runs nice with some tweaks......such as launcher Pro. I never used Dolphin HD. Ive always used Miren Browser since its lightweight and real quick for me BUT i will def give Dolphin a try. I might follow your footsteps and flash KhasMek's kernel and wait for Gingy. Have you noticed any significant differences as far as performance with this kernel?
The kernel is a touch buggy, but for me the performance boost was worth it. Lagfix, ext4 conversion and over clock were too good to pass up.
Using SetCPU to bump up on demand to 1.4GHz helps a bit when I push the tab (google music streaming in the background, navigation running in the background, bluetooth paired to car for audio, a friend browsing the web .... simultaneously) - Doing that stock made it angry, audio would skip and UI would lag, now its nearly perfect.
Also, I use Refresh for Android to reboot the tab automatically at 4:30 AM everyday. This alone has helped with stability/performance. Recently though, it has stopped automatically rebooting the SGT. I got the app because I was too lazy to setup a cron job to do it for me heh.
Hmmm well I have the ext 4 conversion (using OCLF) and that definitely made it much snappier but mine is running stock as far as cpu goes. I haven't experimented with overclocking...not sure if I want to risk damaging mine. But it did spike my interest since I have the same setup and have a car mount for mine. So I stream music and goole map it along with other goodies (like trapster) and sometimes it stutters. Would be cool to see how much faster it would go. And yeah rebooting always helps lol so I might flash that kernel friday. Have you tried any other ones?

As everyone knows, on stock, all (free) tethering apps are broke and openvpn is a disaster. I switched to Hashcode's CM7 and both work perfectly on the first try. As I understand it, CM7 is the only AOSP-based D3 rom out there. So am I correct in thinking that all the other roms (which are just cleaned up and modded versions of VZW's rom) have Verizon's software installed that breaks all free tethering apps? I'm concerned about VZ's spyware (CarrierIQ) and all their other crap. I've only ever had AOSP phones.
I love CM7 and the fact that it is free from *ALL* of VZ's software, but it currenly has no working support for videocam and a couple other hardware bits. So I'd like to try some of the other roms that are discussed here to see if they are as stable as stock.
So, can anyone tell me if these other roms (Mav, SteelDroid, etc) are free from spyware and artificial limitations imposed by the carrier? Does tethering work WITHOUT the TBH baseband hacking? Does OpenVPN work?
Hello.
One of my friends with a GT-i9000 want to upgrade to ICS or JB.
But he uses a lot UMTS vidéo calls. Is there any rom with that capability other than official samsung ones.
Thanks.
I've seen that even nexus S isn't capable of video calling. I think this is crazy. UMTS phone means video calling functionality. It have been available for nearly 10 years, and now that the network coverage is sufficient to use it, new phones aren't compatible.
I know it's not an easy part but we really need to have an open source implementation of that protocol.
id=2664 This is the issue on google code for official Android.
id=3763 An issue in cyanogenmod about the preceding issue not being treated by google.
I really hope this will change someday.
(No links, because no post, even if I've been here for years.)
I agree, it's really "not ok" that in our days we can't make a video call. but fortunately we can use apps like skype, tango and others.
Looking for a battery friendly, speedy ROM with Wi-Fi Calling. Any suggestions? It doesn't matter if it's GB or ICS. I'll be giving the Exhibit 4G to my mom, who needs Wi-Fi Calling on her phone, once I get my new phone. Thanks in advance!

best rom i came across is AOIP 1.5 8/10 with whitefix kernel and as far as wi-fi calling there is numerous apps in the playstore that allow are free. Magic Jack is one of them.
If you must use the Wifi-Calling feature, you should use a Gingerbread ROM. Non of the Jellybean ROMs have that feature implemented. AOSP Ice Cream Sandwich has that feature, but it doesn't always work. You can hear the person talking, but they can't hear you. If I recall correctly, you have to clear the cache via recovery to get it to work again. You can always use google voice wifi calling and use one of the apps from the playstore.
Simply put, the new unofficial build of CM 13 for the s5 is amazing. I didn't know the s5 could be that smooth. However I am locked back to a stock rom just to keep wifi calling. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development/rom-cyanogenmod-13-0-android-6-0-t3237502
Now the word on the street was we would get it http://www.tmonews.com/2015/10/cyanogenmod-13-android-rom-will-have-t-mobile-wi-fi-calling-support/
However, after that one picture leaked. Not a single word was said again about the mater. Now I can assume the feature hasn't entirely made it over to our rom, or that implementation is on a more per device basis. (device specific codes). Either way, I don't want to wait till April just to be let down by another buggy official rom.
So many voip programs, why depend on build in one?
