I am looking to get the HTC One and buy it though Ting and use it on Ting but I would like to install stock ANDROID on it I asked a Ting rep and was told - "We need access to Sprint-specific settings in order to complete activation and make sure it runs on the Sprints network through Ting, so you might not be able to activate it and use some features."
So my question is if I bought the HTC one through ting would I be able to install stock android on it and make it a google play edition and have it work fine?
Thanks to anybody that can help me. love the site just rooted my nexus 7 today!

What they mean by sprint specific might be certain ## codes which are only available through a sense rom. You should be able to activate it on a sense rom and then flash to a GE ROM. The only GE rom i know of though is still in beta and it doesn't work that great. CM10.1 is working fine though. It's as close to AOSP as you can get while also being stable.

I am wondering if it is now possible to permanently make my tmo one think it's a Google play edition. I read something about changing the cid. I think all the hardware is the same except the tmo has support for aws. Would this be a problem?
I love aosp but I don't want to root and Rom. I want updates from Google if possible. If this is not possible I will sell this phone and buy a play edtion at a small loss...
We don't have a complete dump of a Google edition phone. We need the radio, bootloader and recovery for a full conversion. An RUU would be even better. With s-off and the complete dump of the phone, complete conversion should be trivial.
That's strange. Shouldn't we have this by now?
Nobody outside of a few reviewers has the phone yet.
As soon as the devs get the phone we'll see this happen.

Hi,
I have bought this HTC one sprint variant and i want to know whether we can activate it outside US. And do we need to activate to use the phone(normal apps apart from calls and sms)??

I would have to say that activating a US phone outside the US is going to be an epic fail. But, I could be wrong. Check here:

I would be prepared to speak with a Sprint rep and also be prepared for disappointment. You could always sim unlock it and open the global settings which will allow for international use, albeit with some adjustments.

Even an unlock will do... I was afraid that we cannot use the phone entirely if we cant activate.

Not sure if that makes a difference or not, to be honest. That's why the first link was to Sprint; they would have more solid information than just me spitballing. You can root, unlock(bootloader, not sim), and S-Off and then flash a 4.3 ROM with embedded global and GSM settings, of which my build of Beanstalk is one. My advice would be to research different alternatives based on your situation, and decide how you want to proceed. I am sure there is a way to get the service you need out of your device, but I can only offer these suggestions, because your situation is pretty unique.
Good luck.
I'm a bit confused after reading.
I have an account with Ting using an old iPhone 4 (3g). The iPhone was free so I figured I'd give it a shot. I do not like it.
I'd like to get a decent Android phone - I had a Thunderbolt, and through work I have a One X, so I have already invested in my favorite apps. But work phone is not for personal use so I need my own phone too. I like Titanium Backup so root would of course be needed.
I was thinking of the One M7 but - here is the actual question - I sometimes travel overseas, and would like to be able to pop in a SIM card and have hassle-free personal communications when in Europe or India, I'm not sure if this is possible with the One M7.
Or should I just buy a Nexus 5 and be done with it?
Your advice is greatly appreciated.
OK, with some more Google-fu I have answered my question (it could work).
Now I have to figure out if Sprint will SIM-unlock a used phone for me if I'm on Ting.

Hi guys,
I am on the verge of purchasing an HTC one which is on the Sprint Carrier and has a bad ESN.
I was wondering if would be possible to convert this phone into a google play edition and use it on GSM networks outside the USA.
I would appreciate it if someone can help me here.
Thanks and Regards,
Bonnie

I think the only thing that a Bad ESN will prevent is use on Sprint. As far as SIM unlocking, and GPe ROMs, I don't know much about the process.

No you need an actual GSM phone to effectively do this.

Thank you for the prompt reply. But without being unable to convert it to a GPE and use it on GSM network it will be pointless in me getting it. Can you please ask someone you know?

The phone can be used on gsm you just have to SIM unlock. As far as effectiveness of using gsm will depend on the carrier and which frequencies it uses. Converting is impossible because the official GPE is only gsm and has different partitions. You can however use a GPE Rom

I am actually using a bad ESN sprint M7 and I live in the Caribbean on a gsm network(digicel) No issues so far. I have 4g data speed.
My bootloader is unlocked with H-Boot 1.56, I'm S-off, rooted and TWRP recovery. I'm on the 6th rom I've flashed (Tried CM 11 Nightly, CM 10 Snapshot, Stock Deodexed rooted 4.1.2, 4.4.2, MIUI, Viper Rom) and I've been working on this device for about 48 hours non-stop. I am NEED of assistance if ANYONE can offer it,
Is your device also locked to another account on Sprint with the bad ESN? I've got a Sprint HTC one I've performed the Sim Unlock attempting to use my T-Mobile sim, but it will only allow Emergency Calls. No text, no voice and no data. I've gone into the *#*#4636#*#* service menu and changed the settings to WCDMA, but NO dice. Searched for service and nothing appears, just a blank screen! I've even attempted to change RUIM settings in DFSCDMA Tool. I have changed the radio around about 5 different times with NO fix. I have searched high and low on these forums and haven't found anyone that can help me.
My contract with Sprint is up now and I've called boost mobile: incompatible, called straight talk: incompatible. What pay as you go service is compatible with this darn phone? Or anyone get their phone working with one off these services with some tweaks? Need to be sure as I can't have a non working phone even for a day...Thanks!
