[Q] Worth rooting and getting a CM mod? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello dear XDA peeps!
On my previous android phones I felt the need to root and and install other roms because they where slow and had so much crapware on them them but with the lovely Xperia Z I felt the need yet now I'm getting curious tho. Can the the be faster, have more features, better battery and such with a new rom? Will I notice any any changes?
Another question, I read that 4.3 is on its way, both the official and the CM one. How close is that?
Thanx in advance!

about the first question i dont know im still stock
and 4.3 i guess in 2 - 3 months

I don't think it will take that long. There is a working CM on 4.3 in ZL-forum.
Sony Xperia ZL C6503, rooted, 4.2.2 Stock

I wondering about the existing 4.3 roms now, wonder if they are worth trying?

The 4.3 superdroid rom works really well and the pac rom 4.3 is only a couple of days away.. All in all i have noticed battery life improvements the focal camera is superb and all the things you can tweak now a days is definitely worth leaving the stock experience behind and never looking back..
Sent from my C6603

I'm on a CM based ROM (Asylum), it's very smooth with no lags anywhere and the battery life is as good as stock with my usage pattern.
The only real downside is that the camera isn't that good compared to the Sony stock one. I've tried out the focal camera and am not that impressed in terms of image quality. Hopefully there will be some improvements.
Also, none of the sound mods work that well with CM ROMs.
I suggest stick to the Sony firmware for the time being if the sound and camera are important to you.
I don't think 4.3 will bring a vastly different user experience.
Edit: viper4android seems to be working on 4.2.2 and below. Haven't tried it though

Ok thanks for the info
Ive read about the sound improvement mods but Ive been to lazy to try any of them. Is there a big difference in sound quality from the non-modded stock rom and the sound mods??

Is it worth flashing?

Is it worth flashing a new ROM at the moment? I mean, the ROMs I've seen are incomplete and I read about a lot of problems? If its worth it, what is the best ROM out now and why?

I don't really know about problems with arman68's infiniROM. It is smooth, fast and battery-life is much better than stock.
Not really "goodies" which can cause issues.
I use the AIO Mod v6, system-apps and debloater and i am satisfied
But, if it is worth is your decision

I think Omar ROM is the best in the moment. Each 3 ~ 5 days there's a new build. That's good because you know that the no one quited the project of something like that, different from Pi-Llama that you never know the next update.
It has great battery life (2 days without charge it), smooth like hell and i'm without bugs at this moment. I'm using jully 4 build.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174731&page=144
The best you've to do is make a clean install. Wype everything and format all your device, to then install it. Works like a charm. If you install build over build, you'll get lags soon or later.
I hope i helped you.

Same here, works without a flaw - butter-smooth and seriously great battery-life (~6h30m screen uptime, playing around with the phone like a little kid... still 28%).
To be honest, I didn't try Omar's - but arman68's infiniROM is just perfect.

I really thought about trying omars ROM but there are to much issues postet for me. I don't want to make a full wipe twice a week. I want to use my phone
But its a great work what omar is doing. omars kernel is integrated in armans ROM...
I think I'm really considering Omar's ROM it seems less hassle than infinirom even though the constant updates, but I think that if I just backup my apps in a zip or whatever I'll should be fine :3

You don't need to make a fill wipe with each build. You can install it over the old. As I said, there will be an hour that you have to make a full wipe and a clean install, if not, you'll get lags.
I have personally tried both Omar's rom and Arman's infinirom, I don't really notice much of a difference between the two. Omar's rom has more goodies, but imo Arman's is better as a daily driver just because updates don't come out as often. They're both worth trying out. Regarding battery life, I haven't seen the remarkable battery life that everyone has with infinirom. At best, I usually end up with 3.5 hours screen time after two days of use. Omar's gives about the same battery life. Then again, cell signal in my area is average at best.
Oh and one last thing, is you want to use some mods in the forum like shaftenberg's music controls, use Omar's as it's deodexed. Hope you like whichever one you go with, they're both better than stock!

Omar-Avelar's ROM totally worth it. It seems to be the most actively developed and people are liking it.
I came from Moto Defy and Defy+, I was used to CM10 (the best d* ROM ever) and Omar-Avelar is the closest for XT890 I've used so far.
=D

I think that's the point.
With every respect to any developer here, but we are still on stock ROMs. Omar did some great changes to the kernel, but most of the work are mods, deleted system apps and so on. Tweaks here and there, but not every tweak is for anyone.
Take automatic brightness for example: arman68 tweaked this so much, you can get outstanding battery life with it - if you use it.
Personally I prefer *my* settings, which are 40% brightness indoors, 100% outdoors, that's it. AMOLED lives with its colors, why darken it to get some hours more in standby?
Every user will tell you other opinions, some need extra fps for gaming, some want to swap SD card, some other need very dark screens for reading at night. It depends what you want.
Summary for me: I stay on stock, deodexed it, disabled some Motorola stuff I don't need manually, disable Google Now(!), put some mods in it for my likings and a happy face and I'm fine with it. In general I got same battery life, because the largest battery hog is the display.
You might want to test Omar's kernel for stock ROM, think, that's the greatest deal - but have in mind that you might not see or "feel" the difference.
I second that! Omar's is the best so far, but make sure you do regular nandroid backups.
+1

Can users of there ROMs write here pros and cons.
Thank you so much

It's new on the market, give xda some time.
Sony phones have less ROMs than other OEM's phones. Stock ROMs here are very stable and less buggy than those of other manufacturers.
Plus, the camera issues with unlocked bootloaders aren't helping any.
Don't worry, with some time, we'll get good ROMs too. Just have a look at the Xperia Z forum.

I tried monxified and romaur.
Monxified is cleaner (maybe too clean lol) and I like the power menu so i stayed with that.

[Q] Are you happy with your xperia sp?

Had my xperia sp for a couple of weeks and am very surprised by how dreadful the stock ROM was. I came from a GalaxyS2 that was smooth running stock and amazing with the plethora of custom ROMs. I did a little research before choosing the phone and saw a couple of gripes here and there but a lot more positive reviews. I am very surprised that there are not a lot of threads starting here with "this phone sucks balls"!
The lags around the system are shocking and having to press the touch screen four times for before it eventually responds a second or two later to all four touches! Not good Sony.
Is my phone broke? I don't think so, although crippled by an unlockable boot loader, as the cm10.2 for locked bootloader does fix it.
So are you happy with yours?
Your phone is not broke?
I too came from a Galaxy S2 and changed for the battery life and 4g capability.
Also have a locked bootloader so feel hamstrung as I always had Slimsaber on my phone.
Currently on Existenz which is an improvement over stock.

Eh...sort of. At times I do feel really happy with it, but some days I just want to get rid of it. I constantly plan on switching it for a Moto X, but then I find few features that make me wonder if it's really worth the investment. Right now, I'm quite happy running stock rooted rom with few Xposed tweaks, which I never tried before.
i'm not happy because of update that sony gave was terrible :')
i hope sony will give the kitkat update for SP to fix the sh*t, to to add more sh*t
Not happy. I will probably sell phone under price...
- .254 battery life s#cks
- .266 lag, lag, lag
- .201 still lag but little better than .266
Bad camera, not greatest build quality...
After 5-8 years of using Sony/Sony Ericsson phones this is the worst one! I need to buy something else but i dont know which phone should i buy.
Using custom rom Carbon(kit kat version) and quite happy with it. I think it could be better. Battery life is the ONLY thing that i concern. Already used latest .201 stock and not happy with it. Will use SP at least for a year more. :fingers-crossed:
Sometimes im happy with my phone because it can play more games plus hd screen compared to my previous SE android phonetbut im very much disappointed with the camera and sometimes it lags.

Happy compared to my Old Samsung Galaxy S Plus (horrible device.... but great ROM support better than here with the Xperia SP....).
Sometimes I just dont like the way Sony is handeling this device. Delaying updates and now even rejecting Kitkat? It is lame.. But I get use to it.....

Well, Sony Xperia SP is definitely the BEST phone in its price category. That everybody have to agree.
I know the stock firmware is not well optimised , but... hey I used to own a Samsung Galaxy Y before , so anything is better than that low end smartphone.
It's been a pleasure and pain for me.
When it runs well, it's amazing.
Smooth, good looking, very capable capable hardware .
Other times, it's a dog! Hanging, slow loading with app crashes.
I got mine to replace a Moto G that I destroyed accidentally. Pleased and disappointed with it at the same time.
Come on Sony. Please fix the issues that some people are having with this excellent phone!
Im a lot happier now im on Ultimate PureXSP v2, 201 stock should be as smooth as this ROM!

Well i used SP for like 6 months. I loved my experience. But due to exams approaching, i had to switch to a larger device and ended up getting Z Ultra. Kit Kat is horrendous compared to 4.3 so i'd suggest you guys not to dream about it. Maybe 4.4.3 will be better. But for now i'll stick to 4.3 as it is much smoother and faster. I kinda miss my SP though. It was lovely

What ROM are you on? Have a locked bootloader and very limited in ROMs. Even found the modified stock ones are only marginally better. Cyanagen for locked bootloader has saved my phone from imminent death!

Every version of stock ROM is extremely laggy, has problems like bad RAM, very unresponsive touchscreen, freezing, etc. That's why I use CyanogenMod 10.1(UB) which is extremely fast and has no problems at all.
I suggest buy Oneplus One
better phone with new CM11s

I'm running Vanir AOSP android 4.4.2 but it's only for UBL
Unhappy with xperia sp
the back cover is squeaking, android stock is so laggy and full of bugs, camera is the worst. the sd mount for games is not permited, only for pictures and music.
the good is in the games in some games xperia sp is faster.
i think change my xperia sp for nexus 5,galaxy s3 or moto g.
i am very disappointed for sony and this phone.

Depends on your tech savvy. Personally I don't mess around with roms when I have everything I need in stock, especially on my primary phone. Sometimes you also mess up your connectivity to your carrier (this is called EFS partition, back it up!). I've messed with Xperia phones before and I like the stock roms on them. I say don't put cm, unless you HATE your stock rom. Even then you can just theme it with Xposed if you're on that level or use a 3rd-party launcher for beginners and of course you gotta root it Rooting is more for system tweaks tho, only after you install Xposed you can do theming.
Hope this helps,

Personally, I disliked Cyanogen mod because I was so used to the look of my phone. Cyanogen mod changes the entire feel and asthetics of your phone to increase its efficiency. I personally couldn't put up with it, but it may be different for you! I would just stick to stock rom unless you intend to stretch your phone to its absolute limit, in which case Cyanogen mod will help you!
camera quality will be lost, battery life is the same like stock, im using it since jan, sometimes annoying bugs are present..
there is no efs on sony and there are no problems with those like on samy or lg.

I went to cyanogenmod last week, it's fine so far and has many features which can make you excited. the CM based ROMs are super fast and smooth, them can give you another feeling comparing with the stock.
If you want to install CM, you need to unlock your Bootloader, it means you will lost your Bravia Engine forever unless you relock it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/development/tutorial-xperia-z-zl-bootloader-t2153261
As far as I am concerned, I always want to explore something new and XDA forum is better than SONY. believe me
Sony fw is actually based on AOSP/CM itself.. But if u r bored with stock, u are always welcome to try CM ROMs.. They provide their own features, customizations and a different theme engine.. Plus CM11 actually gives u more battery backup and better RAM management.. Hence an upgrade in the performance level.. But both are good in its own ways.. :good:
Only time I've moved to cm is when the manufacturer stops development for the phone, or if the standard rom is just bad. I had a Moto Atrix that was worth the move to cm. The Xperia is fine without cm and I can't think of anything useful it would add.

its nice to take a break from sony's ui. ive tried PAC and PA and some others for a month or so, in the end i ended up going back to sony because CM nightlies are too buggy atm.
its really up to you, both offers slightly different things, CM has more themes to choose from and like i said its a nice break from sonys ui if you got bored of it.

Rom & Mod Reccomendations (Just got a Z1)

Hi,
I'm picking up a Xperia Z1 C6903 for a friend. She basically checks email and takes photos with her phone, so Camera/Video and Battery Life are priority.
Can anyone please recommend a good Rom and/or Mods for me.
I usually get more obscure phones for myself (never had a Sony) without so many options of mods and custom roms, so its a bit harder than I'm used to to sort through the pages on XDA... there so much to go through here so any help to narrow things down a bit for me would be appreciated.
Thanks!

If you /she is not big fan of custom ROM (aospa, paranoid, CM, DU, PAC etc.) I would say just root the phone and use stock ROM.
Stock ROM is best for battery and photos together.
Rooting is good in case she wants Xposed and all the modules.
Don't unlock the bootloader since this will remove some propriety code for display and camera.
I haven't used any stock ROM so can't talk about them.

Thanks, I often find custom roms better for battery life. And can see that there's a few camera mods available. So I assumed a custom rom (either with a Stock based or not?) and camera mod would be the way to go? Also, is the stock camera app the best performer (in terms of image quality?)
Really can't see any need to meddle with the standard rom.
The Xperia range of phones all have outstanding battery life and excellent photo/video software built in as standard.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I was thinking this sound good: [MOD] Z1, Z1C & Z1S 8th Edition - Camera… | Sony Xperia Z1....
And there seems to be a few scripts which claim to improve battery life & speed like Fly-on-Mod...
I guess i'm just not used to stock being the best option!!! I cant help but want to change something
If you want to meddle then root and Xposed would be the simplest option.
But given the original criteria are already met by the standard rom and the fact that it's not your phone I still can't see the need.
Do you really want your friend coming to you with every minor niggle they can dream up, thinking that you caused it by modifying their phone?
Just make sure they upgrade to 5.1.1 which is due out any day now.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
thanks.
I've got it running stock KK, rooted, locked bootloader with xposed & dual recovery.
I decided not to update to LP until 5.1.1 is out (any day now it seems...?) due to slow downs in 5.0.2
From what I can see I'll have to update with Flashtool (if I can find the "Customized AU" file) or updated via Sony PC Companion and re-root & re-install recovery.
will both methods will result in a data wipe?
When it does come out - is there a way to update without loosing here data/settings? & will current rooting methods still work (I used easy root?)
Thanks for your help everyone!
