[Q] MX Player 720P Decoder changing from HW/HW+ to SW midway - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Already have the neon decoder installed, the problem I keep running into is that a 720p video will play beautifully with HW or HW+ when I open a new video. But if I do something like fast forward/backward, turning on the subtitle during the play, the player seems to reset itself with the screen going black for a short moment. When it comes back, it will play the video from the very beginning again but with SW only. I will get the HW/HW+ not supported message if I choose those two decoders. Anybody knows why?

All formats or only one or two?

They are mainly mkv.

Frustrating media playing issues

Hi all,
I've looked around but I guess we will have to accept the fact that the N7 falls short when it comes to media playing capabilities.
The other day me and a friend were comparing 2 awesome devices, my N7 and his S3.
The S3 handles most formats of video without any issues and even features an amazing PIP feature that lets you see videos on desktop or over other apps without lagging the system.
The N7 on the other hand can hardly play any worthy media formats. I downloaded some HD YouTube devices in mp4 format via tubemate app but couldn't play any of those with hardware and software rendering.
I couldn't even play my 720p movies that the S3 or the galaxy tab handles like a baby.
I'm guessing there might be some way to watch movies otherwise it seems an awful waste of the multi core processor and gpu.
Looking forward to your feedback / comments
Not really sure what's happening on your end, but I can play all files perfectly smooth. Though only up to 720p mkvs so far. I'm using BSPlayer by the way.
I've yet to find a video file I couldn't play, though I also haven't pushed past 720p mkv files. Mostly using MoboPlayer and the VLC Beta. What are you using for a video player?
Yeah, you have to install bsplayer litehttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bsplayer.bspandroid.free

Just got my nexus yesterday (first android device ) and tested a few media players, there are a number that have hardware decoding and can play pretty much anything.
I've settled on using "DicePlayer" as its the only one I found that still supports DTS, it also supports smb natively so no file manager needed.
You need to install "DicePlayer" and "DicePlayer Plugin" if you want DTS then you need to follow the advice in the thread below (simple process)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769799
Having no trouble at all playing 1080p mkv over smb very impressed
OK now on sure there's something wrong at my end. No wonder I was so frustrated. I have tried all of the above players but not able to play high def files. My device is stock, unrooted and otherwise running awesome. YouTube HD works great but if I download the same video, it doesn't play past a few seconds on software rendering. On hardware rendering there's no video.
Do me a favor, download Katy Perry's Wide Awake video using the tubemate android app. Select a high resolution and see if you can play it. Thatwill answer a lot many questions
Agree on DicePlayer, it has always been the best for me on tegra 3 devices.
The video playing capability on the nexus should exceed that of the s3. Thats where the quad-core comes in handy.
If you want the "PIP", or floating video window on the nexus look for Stick It on the play store.
There was a video on youtube that I cant find now. They tried to see how many stick it windows they could get opened before the prime was out of memory and gave up. They got to somewhere around 14 or so seperate windows all playing different videos. good times.

I'm not installing an app I don't want but I did download "Katy Perry's Wide Awake" in 1080p from the KatyPerryVEVO channel, played it over smb from my pc in dice player and it worked fine and was hardware decoded.
Of course you need "DicePlayer Plugin" for HW decoding

Couldn't find diceplayer plugin. I can only find plugin for tegra. 2. Any link?

If you mean you can only find "DicePlayer plugin for tegra2" that's what I was referring to.
I cant post links yet on here due to my low post count
Yup. OK installing the tegra 2 plugin and retrying. Will update in a bit

OK, installed the tegra 2 plugin and still the same issue. The player stops at exactly the same spot, around a minute or so. Tried with 2 different videos. I'm guessing now that there is something wrong in the app that I'm using to download these videos since its difficult to imagine that such a great device would lack here.
Funny thing is, same videos are playing flawless on my Desire HD

Sounds like you have an app installed that is causing problems.I know the ultimate rotation app many use to get a tablet ui caused the same effect on my n7.Once I got rid of it I have never had another problem with any video.I use the BS player and it plays about anything I have come across. jmo
I dont have ultimate rotation. I use adw to get landscape home. Tried BSplayer too but let me try again just to be sure

I suggest you look at MX Video Player with the ARMv7 codec pack. Both are free and available on the market. Plays everything I've ever thrown at it. Every once in awhile something looks funky and to resolve it I switch it to S/W decode mode.
Anyways, I hope that helps.

HD videos lagging on CM10

whenever i play HD videos specially mkv file 720p, the video playback lagging. but when i play lower resolution videos, the playback is smooth.
I use CM10 rom, and MX player . how can i fix this lag?
I think it's because of the screen resolution. Remember, your screen is only 480x800 and the minimum resolution to play HD video is 1280x720.

The problem lies within your original intentions.
I am assuming MX Player is running the video codec through a software decoder (SW) so you shouldn't be expecting considerable performance, especially when you are pushing the device past its intended playback capabilities.
Nah its the kodecks. Stock could play 720p vids smooth because it has samsung codecks,CM10 has not. They are somehow registered by samsung and belongs to stock roms. I read about this long time ago when I flashed CM7. For 720p videos i suggest you to use any good 3rd developer media app such as any other than mx player. Sw decoding will never be as good as hw but samsung got the hw drivers so we are in problem
P.S. Remember to download the codeks for ARMv7 for mx player.

Galaxy Tab P1000 and 540p MKV problems

Hi guys. I have Galaxy Tab P1000 and I love it, because it has 7 inch display (yeah, 1024x600, that sucks, I agree). I tried to play NBA game 540p MKV rip and I had issue - sound was far behind video. I thought, that rip is ****, but no. In computer and LG Optimus 4X HD everything worked flawlessly. I tried MX Player, internal Video player - same **** (Android 2.3). Throw P1000 away and just buy Nexus 7?
Try BS player?

or DicePlayer as it supports hardware playback
Hi,
When using the MX player, you have to select HW+ decode.
In my tab, i can watch 720 MKVs without problems. 1080 is too much.
Also, it is a big difference if you use the internal memory vs the micro SD card. Micro SD card performance depends on the class of the card.
I hope it helps.

Addition to MX player case - some time you need to use HW or HW+ decoder for video, but keep using SW decoder for audio (icon audio on the right, unchecked the option).

Does the Nexus 7 play 720p or 1080p videos flawlessly?

Does the device play .mkv videos smoothly?
I'm thinking of getting the device for video playback, just want something which can play my collection of videos.
Beamed from Jupiter on my Galaxy Note II
1080p?No problem
hell yes i watched avengers full 1080... so smooth... these days I don't even use laptop for videos any more. Anything I want to watch I put it on my nexus
Nice!
All the more reason to get it!
MX Player with h/w acceleration plays 1080p videos flawlessly. Just finished Cloud Atlas 1080p and it was incredible.
I use bsplayer for playback. It's excellent

I have no problem with 1080p video playback. It's very smooth.

Plays my BD rips in MKV just fine, but I downsize them for the N7 because there's no appreciable difference in quality and a huge difference in file size.
I usually will use mp4 instead of mkv so my thumb drive will work in my Xbox360 as well. I haven't had any issues with it running from a thumb drive in 1080p
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
You can play 1080p but the N7's resolution only goes up to 720p
I dunno about mkv, but I've played 1080 mp4 with no issues. Used MX Player.
As long as you use the ffmpeg plugin for your video player... diceplayer, Mxplayer, the archos player... the nexus 7 will play all videos, even 1080p, with HWA using very little CPU. Usually staying in the LP core.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
No problem with 1080 using H/W decoding but I loose audio sync with S/W decoding.
If its encoded in Hi10 then no, it will play in software mode and drop frames. This isn't the devices fault, the available media players and codecs just don't support it yet. otherwise it runs other encoded 720/1080p just fine and smoothly.
Seems I am only facing slow problem while playing such HD movies..its not flawless for me..I am using MX player..any suggestions ?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I never bother with 1080p since the screen only displays up to 720p. I change all my mkv files into mp4 and play them inthe stock video player without issue though. Play perfectly smooth. Watch at least 2-3 movies a week. If i'm lazy though i have MXplayer installed for when i don't want to change it into an mp4 format. Sometimes need to use software decoding to play certain files well. But it always plays them no matter what without a problem!

Did you set the hardware decoder to HW+? I because with only HW you can have slow playback.
i would also like to state.
This is a 720p screen, and i have no issues playing 720p video. The screen will not display 1080p resolution, so 1080p video is worthless on the device.
They may work but they are down-scaled versions of 1080p, to 720p.
There is no purpose for 1080p video on this device. Also, the screen is too small to really notice the clarity of a 1080p resolution anyways at 7". 720p looks and plays wonderfully on this device!! 1080p video >.> if you have a codec, it will play at 720p. Dont waste yo space!!!

Hey off topic, but dont use mobo
It has got a adware
Use MX instead
Its really cool
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Its gonna be the same with the avi and mkv files as well if they are encoded with ac3 codec.
I asked htc they will consider putting this into the future upgrades...
Till then use mxplayer and set the decoder to hw or hw+
