Stream HD Netflix? - Google Chromecast

So I read that only the new nexus 7 has the updated Netflix app that allows for HD Netflix streaming using chrome cast.
I found this out because everything I streamed from Netflix (from my s4) was in standard def.
Anyone have a workaround for this yet??

I streamed from my S4 a few days ago. It was standard def for a minute or two, then went to full HD.

1. I was under the impression that 4.3 devices still need the right DRM support - so a 4.3 custom ROM may not support full HD in Netflix.
2. Right, Chromecast will stream up to 1080p no matter where the cast is initiated from.
Although since my TV is only 720p, I wish I could save bandwidth by limiting the streaming to that resolution.

Is there any Netflix movie that really streams at 1080p? If so let me know which one please.
All the movies I tried on my computer didn't even had a real 720p quality even if the HD button was activated. So if it really was 720p, it definitely didn't look like so good as some 720p videos that you can find on torrent sites, youtube or vimeo...
On my Galaxy Note 2 it's even worst, the quality is similar to 480p at his best.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 4

Streaming on your computer will be lower quality than through Chromecast. Many of the content providers for Netflix do not trust desktop OSes to provide a sufficient level of DRM, so they limit the streaming resolution. On Chromecast it streams at the highest possible resolution. However I can't vouch for which content streams at true 1080p because I only have a 720p TV.

The new Nexus 7 can stream 1080P on the device since it has a 1080P screen. It has nothing to do with streaming through Chromecast. The new/old Nexus 7 and any other Android device will stream the same exact quality through Chromecast to your TV.

When you setup your chromecast on your S4 you didn't have an update for the Netflix app? It may have just been random but when I set mine up last week on my s4 there was an update available. Anyway it streams at 1080p to Netflix really well. I'm sure there are older shows/movies on Netflix that are still in SD but I tried that new show orange is the new black and it steams at 1080p and looks awesome. The post above me seems the most logical way it would work.

1. Only the Nexus 7 streams full HD from Netflix. (When referring to android devices)
2.Chromecast will pull the stream from the internet (not your device) and stream what it can. Not sure if it does full HD though (1080p).
Edit: It seems that the chromecast will stream 1080p Netflix and YouTube, Tab-casting is limited to 720p however.

I can confirm that the Nexus 7 limitation is hard coded in the app. It specifically checks for the Nexus 7 device, not for a certain feature. I have removed that check in my modified Netflix App, it might be what OP is looking for. I have not yet tried to disable the check for Android 4.3, as I've for now simply assumed that that is actually important.

Frustrating media playing issues

Hi all,
I've looked around but I guess we will have to accept the fact that the N7 falls short when it comes to media playing capabilities.
The other day me and a friend were comparing 2 awesome devices, my N7 and his S3.
The S3 handles most formats of video without any issues and even features an amazing PIP feature that lets you see videos on desktop or over other apps without lagging the system.
The N7 on the other hand can hardly play any worthy media formats. I downloaded some HD YouTube devices in mp4 format via tubemate app but couldn't play any of those with hardware and software rendering.
I couldn't even play my 720p movies that the S3 or the galaxy tab handles like a baby.
I'm guessing there might be some way to watch movies otherwise it seems an awful waste of the multi core processor and gpu.
Looking forward to your feedback / comments
Not really sure what's happening on your end, but I can play all files perfectly smooth. Though only up to 720p mkvs so far. I'm using BSPlayer by the way.
I've yet to find a video file I couldn't play, though I also haven't pushed past 720p mkv files. Mostly using MoboPlayer and the VLC Beta. What are you using for a video player?
Yeah, you have to install bsplayer litehttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bsplayer.bspandroid.free

Just got my nexus yesterday (first android device ) and tested a few media players, there are a number that have hardware decoding and can play pretty much anything.
I've settled on using "DicePlayer" as its the only one I found that still supports DTS, it also supports smb natively so no file manager needed.
You need to install "DicePlayer" and "DicePlayer Plugin" if you want DTS then you need to follow the advice in the thread below (simple process)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769799
Having no trouble at all playing 1080p mkv over smb very impressed
OK now on sure there's something wrong at my end. No wonder I was so frustrated. I have tried all of the above players but not able to play high def files. My device is stock, unrooted and otherwise running awesome. YouTube HD works great but if I download the same video, it doesn't play past a few seconds on software rendering. On hardware rendering there's no video.
Do me a favor, download Katy Perry's Wide Awake video using the tubemate android app. Select a high resolution and see if you can play it. Thatwill answer a lot many questions
Agree on DicePlayer, it has always been the best for me on tegra 3 devices.
The video playing capability on the nexus should exceed that of the s3. Thats where the quad-core comes in handy.
If you want the "PIP", or floating video window on the nexus look for Stick It on the play store.
There was a video on youtube that I cant find now. They tried to see how many stick it windows they could get opened before the prime was out of memory and gave up. They got to somewhere around 14 or so seperate windows all playing different videos. good times.

I'm not installing an app I don't want but I did download "Katy Perry's Wide Awake" in 1080p from the KatyPerryVEVO channel, played it over smb from my pc in dice player and it worked fine and was hardware decoded.
Of course you need "DicePlayer Plugin" for HW decoding

OK, installed the tegra 2 plugin and still the same issue. The player stops at exactly the same spot, around a minute or so. Tried with 2 different videos. I'm guessing now that there is something wrong in the app that I'm using to download these videos since its difficult to imagine that such a great device would lack here.
Funny thing is, same videos are playing flawless on my Desire HD

Sounds like you have an app installed that is causing problems.I know the ultimate rotation app many use to get a tablet ui caused the same effect on my n7.Once I got rid of it I have never had another problem with any video.I use the BS player and it plays about anything I have come across. jmo
I dont have ultimate rotation. I use adw to get landscape home. Tried BSplayer too but let me try again just to be sure

I suggest you look at MX Video Player with the ARMv7 codec pack. Both are free and available on the market. Plays everything I've ever thrown at it. Every once in awhile something looks funky and to resolve it I switch it to S/W decode mode.
Anyways, I hope that helps.

TV out, Miracast or anything like it?

It's driving me nuts. The only thing that stops the the Nexus 7 being nothing more than a toy or glorified ebook for me is the fact I cannot find any form of big screen streaming for it. My 2 year old phone has MHL abilities which is okay but someone must know if there are any plans for the Nexus 7? It seems to be ridiculous to have such a powerful device and not be able to use it on a bigger screen.
I've searched back 10 pages on this subject and found nothing so welcome any fresh perspectives on it.

+1 to BubbleUPnP...
Though screen mirroring is not possible in BubbleUPnP, you can throw any media from it to your TV or other
DLNA enabled devices...
Luckily, my TV has WiFi dongle and Wi-Fi direct feature...
so, once my device is connected to the TV via WiFi-direct, launch BubbleUPnP and select the TV as renderer, I can
throw any media to the TV...
I'm also hoping and wishing for the screen mirroring...
Hi I will look at BubbleUPnP, I've been using Skifta for the time being which does DNLA quite well.
I use my PS3 as a receiver but it doesn't support many file formats.
It's a real shame the Nexus doesn't at least support MHL.

Fling with the Chromecast

My Chromecast will be arriving in the mail the 28th and I cannot wait to play with the sucker. Now my question is this. Will I be able to run Fling on my Chromecast without rooting it or does it need to be rooted? Does this apply with AirCast as well?

Nope, it will work fine without root. Just don't expect miracles with Fling. It can run mp4 videos fine but MKV's and AVI's are a mess. The transcoder used is complete crap and unless you are running a beast PC and don't want 1080p video you will be ok, otherwise those file types are unplayable as is. MP4 streaming works because it doesn't need to be transcoded. It's just being played natively on the Chromecast.

Stream local unsupport content yes. Mp4 files will work fine. So will Mp3's. Just not AVI's. I think AVI's are causing the most problems actually. MKV's can get playback but it's so laggy and quality of picture is very low. AVI's just seem like they wont play. Still this device has been out for about a month now. You can't expect hacked features like this to be complete. If you buy a Chromecast now you are buying it for what it will do not what it can do.

I'm able to play avi just fine.
mpg is also good.
mkv does have problems that they're still working through.
The latest update earlier today fixed the discovery issue I was having. Now I've finally been able to play with fling and chromecast. Very satisfied and excited with how it's coming along.

Here is a list of Apps that are already working on CCast support
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromecast
As for what I would like to see....
1 - I would like to see the XBMC remote programs allow you to cast to Chromecast as a Target. But I think they would have to add transcoding to XBMC to do it well....
2 - Would like to see a good SCREEN CAST app which I think may in the end not require an APP because it will be native to Android.
3 - The Ability to leverage HDMI-CEC capabilities of Chromecast in an App to enable CCast to act as a Remote Control via IP. (But better would be an IR blaster port in the next generation CCast so those without HDMI-CEC setups can use it as well)
4 - Screen Mirroring support for PC outside of Chrome (Not really an App as much as a program for PC)
Twitch, undoubtedly my app I'd use the most.

I doubt that Dropbox would add casting to it's own app.
Whats funny is I looked at the DIAL homesite and saw the Bittorrent and uTorrent name registered in their database...So soon your Bittorrent client like Azureus or uTorrent may get the capability to stream to CCast.
Check out who has registered names and prefixes for DIAL support.

BBC iPlayer and LoveFilm.
Although I understand they're both UK and the ChromeCast isn't out in the UK yet...so probably not going to be soon.
I do wonder how many Chromecasts are "live" in the UK though!

Great Article! As great as the Chromecast is....It is the DIAL protocol itself that is what makes the device exciting and the Potential to change the way we do TV in the future.
Just imagine TVs with Two Way DIAL support...Whats on the TV can be sent to a second screen...
Or content from any device that supports DIAL can be sent to any TV.
No worrying about the Manufacturer keeping their smart Apps up to date anymore.

Otherwise you can use Avia (paid option) or RealPlayer Cloud.

I've also been a VERY proud owner of a Galaxy Note 3 since around early to mid-October when it was first released. All Chromecast-enabled apps have worked just fine on my phone **SO FAR**. As far as I can remember, I've never had a single issue casting from my Note 3, even with the "working" version of Koushik's AllCast/AirCast app. Everything has been just fine and problem-free thus far!!(As far as I know....*[1.]My fingers have remained crossed since I bought this phone back in October. ...&... [2.]This wooden desk has had a small knuckle-sized hole 'knocked' straight through it!!* LOL). But yea, as far as the "stock" Samsung Video app goes, as long as your Chromecast has been rooted and you've installed the correct, "working" version of Koushik Dutta's AllCast/AirCast app onto your phone, you *should* be able to just open up the Video app, locate your video that you're wanting to cast(Google's Chromecast PREFERS for "casted" videos to have the .mp4 file extension and also to have been encoded using the H264 video codec and the AAC audio codec.), and finallllllly, locate and press the "Share to AllCast" button up at the top of the app(If you don't happen to see the "Share to AllCast" icon up at the top of the Videos app, you just MAY have to click on the little 2 or 3 pronged "Share to..." button up at the top of the app instead and just scroll down the list that pops up to locate the AllCast app.). Assuming that your Chromecast has already been properly rooted and the correct version of "AllCast" has been installed, your video(Also assuming that the video has been properly encoded in the H264/AAC codecs.) *SHOULLLDDD* start playing on your tv screen in all its beauty (...with an echo ringing throughout your house/apartment/trailer/cardboard box(I'm TOTALLY J/K about this one!!) coming from your Chromecast sounding eerily like Tarzan in the jungle!! Lol!!).
