I have an almost new Nook HD running CM10.1-20130810-Nightly-hummingbird in EMMC (just updated today).
Most of the time, it won't wake up from sleep unless I repeatedly press the power button from 10 to 20 times.
Other times it wakes up immediately when pressing either the Nook button or the power button.
Once it wakes up, everything works perfectly. This is the only problem I have.
It had the same problem with both 20130624-Unofficial and 20130719-Unofficial.
Anyone have any ideas????

Do you have a cover on it? Maybe one with a magnet in it?
Sent from my Nook HD+ running CM10.1 on emmc.
Nope... no cover... I use a BookArmor case that doesn't have any magnets in it.
I have the same exact problem. I use a case with a magnet cover. Running CM 0810.

Then open the cover twice and it will be ok.

The magnetic cover issue is actually on HD+'s. I have heard of no one having your issue with an HD. Sounds like you have a defective power button. Did you have this issue on stock?

I have the HD and I have the same problem. I took off my cover/case and still experience these sleep issues. Yes, opening the cover twice is a workaround but it does not fix it.

I don't remember this happening when it was stock... but it was only stock for about two days before I broke down and installed CM10 to EMMC.
There's at least two of us out there with HD's with this problem.
I doubt its the power button as I can see the LCD flash on and off when I repeated push on the button to wake the HD.
The backlight goes on and off with black screen and without a lock screen.
Also the Nook button should wake it up but fails the same way.
Sometimes, when I remember, a long press on either the Nook or the power button will wake the unit up more often, even that fails a lot of the time.
I suppose I can flash it back to stock and see what happens....... sigh
I don't mean to get off track here, but I'm wondering about the magnetic cover issue.
I have an HD+ and a magnetic cover. I don't have any lockscreen set. On the stock ROM, it worked just fine. But, as mentioned in this post, I have to open the cover twice for my Nook to turn on.
It doesn't always take two times. Sometimes, if I set the Nook down and pick it up a couple minutes later, opening the cover once will turn it back on. Does anyone know why it's doing this?
Let me add something strange to this problem:
I can click the power button three times fast then hold it down......
.... and the Nook will wake up 98% of the time!!
Sometimes, I have to do it two or three times, but it always works!!

Mine does all the things in this thread, too. The open cover twice fix works for me, so that'll do as a fix for now. But here's another I found:
I can click the power button quickly twice, holding it in the second time. This brings up the shutdown menu. If I then touch the 'back' screen button, the screen stays on.
Hoping this might help someone who doesn't have a magnetic cover.
My HD running 10.1.3 does this from time to time. I have a Poetic case which I believe has a magnet in the cover. When it doesn't come on, if I push the Nook or the power button, the screen comes on and quickly goes out again. It may do this several times before it finally stays on. I'll have to try the techniques mentioned here.

My HD+ is running cm11, most of time, the wake up by opening the cover works perfectly, occasionarily, I need to open twice, didn't have other wake up issues.
My new HD is experiencing the same problem. I'm on the stable 10.1 cyanodgen hummingbird release. I would sometimes have to press the power buttons on the side or front repeatedly to wake it up. Before I had the "slide to unlock" lock-screen on but after I unlocked the screen..swipe to unlock..it would go back to the lockscreen, it would do this over and over until it eventually unlocks it. So I thought it was a lockscreen issue with the rom so I took off the "lock-screen". I would think the problem is gone but the screen just comes on for a split second and then turns off every now and then. You would have to use the home button or power button to turn on the tablet. It is annoying.
I just bought a Nook HD on ebay with a Poetic cover with magnet.
Mine does the same thing on stock 2.2.1, both before and after rooting, whether opening the cover or, with the cover already open, pushing the Nook button.
I don't think it ever takes more than three tries to wake it up, though.
Glad to find out that this problem isn't unique to my unit, at least.
Sorry to post to a 3-year-old thread.

I have an AT&T unlocked Nexus One that I recently flashed to CM-7.0.3-N1 . I have had a problem unlocking the device with the power button both when I was running stock Gingerbread and now that I have installed CM7.
When the screen is off and my N1 is in standby, I push the power button and the screen turns on and then back off almost immediately. Sometimes there is a half second delay before the screen turns on and then off. This usually goes on 2 or 3 times until the screen will stay on and I can unlock my phone.
Has anyone seen or heard of this problem, and maybe knows of a fix? It could be hardware related, but the button definitely sends a signal to the phone and it works fine to shutdown or turn on the device from completely off. Thanks.
ummm the power button on the nexus one has an incredibly high failure rate, all over the forum here. its a design defect from the factory. that's why it has always been recommended to root the device immediately, and use trackball wake, so you avoid using the power button as much as possible. you have to send the device to HTC for repair, that's your only option...
Thanks for the information. I will have to look into repairs.
You are already running a rooted rom with track all wake. Use it. To reboot the the phone use quickboot. At this stage you really don't need the power button on your phone.

This is a problem with CM7. Most advise turning off the screen off animation if it becomes a big problem for you. Make sure you are using the newest nightly and hope for a fix. I don't know if the RC's have this problem, but I would bet it appears on the 7.0.3 release.
At first glance that seems to have helped. Thanks for the advice!
No problem.
Also you can use widget locker to lock the screen then the trackball to wake, with that and quickboot I don't even touch my power button anymore. Although your problem doesn't sound like a broken power button so in your position I would switch ROMs and see what happens.

I'm experiencing exactly this too on the latest RC. It doesn't seem to be complete button failure but it's acting like I've pressed it twice sometimes. Disabling the screen-on animation does seem to prevent it from popping back on. But it still sometimes goes on-then-off when I wake it with the power button. So now I'm using trackball wake too.
As others have mentioned, this does not sound like a powerbutton issue, because the powerbutton still turns on the screen. The problem is that the screen turns off immediately after it turns on.
When you flashed 7.0.3, did you come from a previous CM verison? From stock? My first suggestion would probably be to wipe the /system partition (in CWM, it is under mounts and storage -- with Amon_RA, you need to find a flashable zip to do it) and reinstall CM and gapps. This will not cause any data loss. Sometimes, if you install a new ROM over an old one, the upgrade script in CM can get confused and carry over files that aren't supposed to be carried over. The system wipe fixes that.
I've been using this RC since it came out in late June. Only this week did it start flipping out on me.

It still can't hurt anything to do a system wipe, just in case something got screwed up (these things can be so temperamental at times). And, like I said, you won't lose any of your data.

I'm currently using S2E for apps2ext and some data2ext. How would a system wipe and reinstall interact with that? I'm a bit nervous on that front.
A system wipe shouldn't change any of that. It is one benefit of using S2E as it is a standard app that is stored in the /data partition without any changes to the /system partition.
Anyway, to be safe, it is a good idea to do a nandroid backup anytime you are doing something that involves the majority of the features in recovery.
It's a hardware problem for me. Failed completely as of today.

CM7 7.1.0
My power button seems to be in the process of completely failing. The new CM7 update to 7.1.0 has made it possible for me to lock the screen without using the power button using the "Notification power widget" -> "Go to sleep". Now the only times I have to use the power button are to shut the phone down or wake it up, which seems to be easier when the phone is plugged in to a wall charger. Are there any simple apps for shutting the phone down and maybe waking it up at a set time?
The only reliable trick I found to turn it back on was to plug into the wall and take the battery out/in a few times till it vibrated.
I ended up getting a replacement phone and then I sent the Nexus to HTC. They quoted a $55 repair cost off warranty which my credit card insurance would've covered, but when I asked for an invoice they offered to just waive the charges. Finally over a month later it came back fixed.
The app Easy Reboot can shut the phone down.

I also use an app called Lock Screen, which just locks the screen. I have it stored in my dock, because I don't like the space being used in the notification widget.
CM7 has an option for one of the items in the notification tray widget to be a lock screen button.

THANK YOU!!!! This has been driving me crazy. Turning off the screen-off animations did nothing, but turning off the screen-on animation seems to have fixed the issue. My power button is toast (my new power button ribbon cable just arrived... time for surgery), and I've been using the trackball to wake my phone. Before the power button died, it did the same thing. I'm using CM7.2. I installed it after rooting and went straight to cm7.2 from stock, so obviously the cyanogemnod crew haven't fixed the issue since 7.0.3 when this thread started.
I have noticed two bugs in verygreen's Nook HD+ Firmware:
1. The screen flashes on and off when I use the tablet while it is plugged into the wall.
2. The wifi will cut off, and not automatically come back on the device after a period of no usage.
Other than that, the firmware is great, please keep up the great work verygreen and XDA community!
I'd like to add that I (and at least one other person on the Slick Deals forum) have an issue with the lock screen not unlocking after waking from sleep sometimes. When I unlock, it looked unlocked for less than a second, then back to the lock screen.
It repeats over and over. The fix is to hit the power button to put it to sleep and wake normally.

Hi all,
We got our Nook HD+ on Wednesday. I was intending to root it and install CM 10.1 but haven't even got that far before problems have started. I thought I'd post this just in case anyone else had the same problem. When the problem first started, it still should have had plenty of charge left. I had been using it to read a book and play a game earlier in the day. I turned it off after use; now it won't boot back up again. The backlight seems to come on for a few seconds but then goes off. Holding Power and 'n' does nothing except turn the backlight on as previously mentioned.
We have not modded this device in anyway, neither is there a micro-SD card in the device. It is now fully charged but still presenting the same issue.
If anyone has come across this before, or knows another way to do a hard reset, please let me know.
Thanks, Peter
Let it charging for a while then try what you did again.

Did you try holding the power button for like 15 seconds, releasing and then briefly hold the power button? If you hold it too long, it turns itself back off.
If you tried that and are sure it is charged and it does not turn on, it is a hardware issue and it is time for a warranty exchange at the B&N store.

Had a similar issue the first time... Power it on... Plug the charger, leave it with the screen looking like this and wait 20 minutes. Reboot and check if it boots properly. If not, try rebooting by holding the power button and the volume buttons simultaneously...

Thanks. I went on the Nook UK support chat and they couldn't instruct me to get it started again. It's been returned and hopefully our replacement will be on the way soon. Possible hardware fault was the suggestion.
I have been using my nook HD+ on CM10.1, 10.2 and 11 for a few months with no problems. Then recently I got a weird problem. After some investigating and testing I can consistently replicate it as follows:
Leave it idle at 12:00pm.
Screen goes off at 12:01pm. (normal, because set to 1 min)
Now if I touch the screen or press the 'n' button or press the power button at 12:02 or 12:03, the screen comes back on, which is normal behavior.
However if I touch the screen or press the 'n' button or press the power button at 12:11 or about 10 mins after screen off, nothing happens, the screen does not turn on. It feels like it has turned off, but I don't think so because I have to hold the power button for 5-10secs to "forced turn off" (no visual indication), let go then hold the power button again and it will boot up the nook like it was turned off.
I have assumed software error at first so I completely wiped the entire nook, including /system, /data, /0, reinstalled a fresh M6 or M8 along with pagapps, but get the same problem behavior on the fresh install.
I'm out of ideas and suspect a hardware fault of some kind that may not be fixable by me. Anyone has the same problem and found a fix?
Edit: additionally, the 10mins is not fixed. It could be 10 mins this time, 20mins at another time. Also if I plug in the charger at this point of time, the led is a steady green.
Edit: more googling yielded the term 'sleep of death' that have somewhat similar symptoms. Still no solution yet.

I don't know how to fix your problem, but it is caused by your device going into deep sleep. The device is designed to enter a very deep sleep mode after 10 to 15 minutes of inactivity. This is to save battery. For some reason your device is hard to wake up. You might try playing with some of your settings, like whether wifi stays on in sleep mode, etc to see if that helps. The HD+ does not suffer from SOD (Sleep of Death) like the Nook Color used to.
Sent from my BN NookHD+ using XDA Premium HD app
Wifi may not stay on in sleep mode anyway even when set to always on - though I've not noticed this problem since M8 on the nook hd+, my phone does still have it. Perhaps enabling it will help due to wakelock on the cpu (keeps the cpu in use during sleep).
Noticed at rare times in the past that the screen could take much longer time than normal to come back on. It could just be hard to wait long enough. Don't know how long you were waiting but I've done the same thing as well as waiting for it to finally turn on.
If your using a lockscreen, you could try disabling that completely. Sometimes, there are bugs there.
In case anyone else has my problem, my workaround is to install wake my android pro so that it remains in sleep and never goes into deep sleep.
Tried searching for the same problem, but I can't seem to find it. I have cm-11-20150712 nightly installed on both mine and my girlfriend's Nook HD+. When we go to turn the device off via Power Off menu, it will act like it powers down, but then we will see the Nook start screen and CM11 will boot back up to home screen. It doesn't do this every single time, but it does it quite often. A hard power off (holding power button until it turns off) prevents it from turning back on.
This problem happens on more than a few CM11 nightlies, and I wish I could remember the one that seemed to work well. We never had this problem on CM10 versions.
Can someone please help me determine if this is a known problem, and if so how might I fix it?
Thanks
I am having this issue on 0719
