Hi,
Am looking to install CM10.1 on a Kindle Fire HD 7" but am totally new at this so obviously need idiot-level instructions
I've been reading through the threads in the development forum but am a bit confused as there appears to be conflicting advice.
On the one hand, there is this awesome tutorial by seokhun: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909
This seems to be just what I need, but then if I look at the main CM10.1 thread by Hashcode, at the start he links to this thread instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128848
This is where I get confused, which is the best path to take, do I need to do one or the other procedure or even both? The seokhun procedure does look a lot simpler but I want to get this right the first time obviously
Any advice appreciated.
I used seokhuns tutorial, only here's some advice I suggest u follow, make sure u check off the top box in fireflash before you tell it to flash, it should say in red letters if u need to or not, but because some people miss it just check it off anyways, shouldn't hurt anything if your on an older os, and please make sure you check the md5sum of the twrp and freedom boot images before you flash them as well. U can check the md5sum in es file explorer by holding down on the file and going to its properties and telling it to calculate md5sum and compare it to the one one on the page.

Hi
I have been reading alot about rooting Nook HD+ and I came to conclusion that I am rather confused. There are alot of tutorials and methods, and there has been a recent update to Nook recently. Some files seem to old some files not so sure if they are applicable or not.
I want to root it so that I can use adaway with my Nook HD and HD+. I do not want to install Mods, I do not want to do any other tricky Android OS stuff for now. I just need to eb able to root it.
I installed the SDK and I have a working adb usb bus now. I can send files files using the android adb command.
Which method of rooting is applicable to HD and HD+ nowadays?. I am kinf of tired of trying to locate an up to date information and the more I read the more I get confused about this process. So please help and give me a link/reply that works fine nowadays.
thanks

With any stock version above 2.0.4, the only way to root stock is to use my CWM method in my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. And once you get it rooted, heed my warning about how to set up adaway so it will not reset your device.

Use leapinlar's method, I used it on my own nook and installed carbon on it with no problems.

leapinlar, thank you for following up my thread.
I am going through your thread and I am again confused about one issue here. Which file is the boot related zip ? You are not referencing the names of the files in your detailed thread which makes it harder to follow actually. You have alot of information, thanks for your time however if you can name the files you want people to add, unzip, boot whatever that would be really incredibly helpful.
The other question I have is about Nook HD. Is that thread also applicable to HD all the way?
thanks

Now you are confusing me. What is the "boot related zip"? You mean the BOOTFILES? If so, it is the one with "BOOTFILES" in the name and ends in rar, not zip. And I don't name the files in the text since there is generally two versions for each file, one for the HD and one for the HDplus, and the text would get very tedious with all those names. Just look for HD in the title in your case and read the rest of the words to understand what they are for.
And if they have HD-HDplus in the title, they work for both.

Yes, I wanted to thank user leapinlar as well.
That post of yours was invaluable. I just picked up an SD Card, put the BOOTFILES, the extras and the Universal root zips on it and did all that you mentioned. It worked perfectly.
P.S: I'd like to add that I have a brand new nook (bought from B&N store in July 2013) and it booted from the SD Card at the first try. I mention this because you had said that this is sometimes an issue (hopefully B&N fixed it)
Hey guys,
Firstly many thanks for the help!
I rooted my Kindle Fire HD 7" successfully using KFFirstAide, worked fine.
I then selected option 10, to install second boot loader, TWRP. seemed to work fine. But now all that happens is the White and orange kindle logo shows for a second, and then the screen turns all red.
I'm assuming bricked :/.
Now my question. Will the factory cable that I can purchase help?!
Many thanks,
Mattt
Yes it will, from there you just need to reflash the stock bootloader. I don't know if kindle fire first aid has the option to restore the boot loader but if it doesn't theirs instructions mor or less in has codes thread on manually installing the 2nd boot loader. The instructions were designed for downgrading the boot loader, but they also fix a bricked kindle by restoring the file he included. If u can't find anything in the of first aid then use this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128848
Look underneath where it says "added 04/02" in red letters towards bottom of first post. Make sure you check the md5sum so u don't hard brick your kindle.

Thank you so much for your reply Stunts. I've just gone ahead and ordered the cable.
I think there is a restore option, but that was for the three partitions. Is that what I need to restore?.
Many thanks again I'm sure i'll have some more questions when the cable arrives!
Cheers,
Matt
I haven't bricked a kindle yet so I am not sure what partitions it backs up, I think it backs up boot, system, and recovery. If that's the case I don t think it will help but I am unsure. I can always download kffa and look through the batch coding to see what it does though if I need to. I'll look through the coding tomorrow to see, I don't have the mouse to my PC with me and its a pain to follow scripting on a tablet IMO.

Matt,
I was in the process of flashing CM10.1 to my Kindle the other day and I encountered the same problem with the red screen. I had forgotten a step. All I had to do was do was exactly what Stunts said, in the step under "added 04/02" (in red letters). You use the fastboot cable and the Kindle in fastboot mode to push that file onto your tablet.
Once I did that, the red screen went away.
You guys are amazing, thanks so much Stunts and calkenneth!
I really appreciate the help!
When the cable arrives I'll flash the boot loader from there, hopefully that will unbrick and I'll carry on from there.
Just one question, is the bootloader, the same as what is effectively stored on the root partition / ie the root backup img.
Thanks again guys!
Um if I am understanding that correctly then no is the answer I think. I am a Linux user so I understand the root partition, not sure where the boot loader itself is stored, outside of the actual block that I think we can backup off it. I don't think its a mountable partition, though if it was I wouldn't mind perusing it in read only mode. I just personally haven't seen it.

HUGE thanks to both you guys!
Cheers so much stunts and calkenneth. I did exactly as you said. The cable arrived, fastbooted the boot loader and all was good!
Managed to install Andriod and Google Store. Now it's working like a charm and I'm loving it.
Thanks again!
Excellent, glad to hear it!
What guide should I follow to install a 2nd bootloader and recovery? I have a 7kfhd with 7.4.6.
Most guides are a bit outdated or for previous software versions.
Should i downgrade the software first? If so, to which version?
I already rooted it. I just don't want to brick it so soon as it is for gift. I have read all I could but I still have many doubts. So I prefer to ask to someone who knows more before I brick it.
OK I will link you to the tutorial but before going through this process please tell me one thing, are you going to put a custom rim on it or do you want to leave the amazon os on it and just have a custom recovery? Because if you follow this guide, your kindle is going to boot loop unless you flash a specific file from kinology instead of one of the files in the tutorial. Here's the link though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909

Well, I wanted to install cyanogenmod or similar, please advise me. I got this model because I read that it had many custom roms. This tablet is for my parents so I'd like to foolproof it. As much as I've tried the original software I can't find any reason to keep it, it is complicated and very limited, I don't want a stock based rom either.
OK good, that makes thing easier, simply download a ROM of your choosing and the gapps flashable zip that go along with it, and put them on your kindle before you start any of the process in that tutorial. Once you follow that tutorial there is one key thing you must do, check the first check box that more than likely will have red text under it about your bootloader version being to new. If you don't check that you will probably get a red screen that you can't fix without a fastboot cable. That pretty much covers it, just make sure to read through the tutorial, it's very informative. Oh and if you put a cm 11 or cm 11 based ROM, make sure to flash the most recent twrp flashable zip (from the dev section for your device) from within twrp like you would any other ROM. I believe hashcode recently added selinux support to twrp and its required to flash the cm 11 ROM. Any other questions just reply back!

To use fireflash, it really works best if you use fastboot to downgrade to 7.2.3. Hashcode has a 7.4.6 bootimg here http://hosting.crackflasher.com/get.../Hashcode0f/tate/kfhd7-freedom-boot-7.4.6.img (from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128848&page=50 ) to use if you're already on 7.4.6 Amazon firmware and use TWRP 2.6.3.1 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128848 The firmware your Kindle is on must match the bootimg file you flash.
Just remember to drag and drop which ever ROM you want onto the internal SD card before flashing because FireFlash will flash TWRP as long as you check the boxes the op says to. Stack override for one. You should be able to access TWRP and flash the ROM from there.
Make sure to read that OP a few times so you don't have issues.
I have gained root acess and now I've been trying to install 2nd bootload and TWRP following this tutorial;- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1bLCuQN0-U
It says
" If you have a different version then 7.4.6 then look here for the freedom image you will need http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/tate/ "
But there seems to be no image for the 7.4.8 version. Should I just use the 7.4.6 version?
I also checked out the Installing Kindle Fire HD 7" 2nd-Bootloader + TWRP Complete Tutorial thread but it says I need to revert back to 7.2.3 before starting.
Please help.
Long story short you don't need to downgrade technically. What needs downgrading is the bootloader, also the 7.4.6 will sorta serve its purpose, you need to flash it for second d bootloader, however the current 7.4.6 freedomboot isn't compatible with 7.4.8 in the sense that it compares the freedom boot version with the os version and if they don't match it boot loops into recovery, which isn't a problem if you plan on flashing a custom ROM, so to make things easy just remember to put the ROMs you want to flash onto the kindle ahead of time or it will be slightly more difficult to do so once it starts boot looping into recovery. I recommend the fire flash method if you are not comfortable with a lot of command prompt commands, but in that method there's always the risk of you not seeing the downgrade bootloader option, its there, its just a lot of people tend to not see the check box next to or above the red warning text, and when its not checked you reboot with a nice red screen only a fastboot cable can fix. Just remember if you use the method you are doing, please for the sake of all that is good check the md5sum of the bootloader file you are going to flash to downgrade the bootloader, if you don't and its a bad download you will end up with a expensive paperweight.

Uh.. that seems complicated. Can I just downgrade my version from here and then follow the thread?
Thanks for taking the time out to answer this.
I mean you could but it would be a lot of extra work that's not needed. All you need to do is stick the ROM and gapps on ahead of time, downgrade the bootloader, and do the rest of the instructions as it says in tutorial.

Hey im a noob at this so I was wondering if you could make a more in depth tutorial on how to do that. I have kindle fire hd7 7.4.8 but they dont have a boot image ughhh help please???
That doesn't matter, just follow one of the 2 main tutorials foe your device and use the latest boot image available, make sure you loaded the ROM and zip on ahead of time and all should be fine.

once you it you won't be able to get into kindle os, thus why you need a custom rom on the device ahead of time so you can flash it when it bootloops into recovery mode. If you downgrade it you can still access the kindle os, but it takes a little longer and you have to download another few hundred mb of data.

Ok, great that totally makes sense now. I was missing that you could downgrade once you have TWRP installed. Got TWRP running and I'm making my first back up. Thanks for all you help stunts513! You previous posts and walkthroughs were very helpful!
I need some assistance with unbricking my kindle fire HD I had rooted it and tried to install a custom rom using FIRE FIRE and it bricked my device as it was the incorrect bootloader.
