Hello ladies and gents,
I ahve a very simple question, i want to follow the CyanogenMod thread to change roms on my milestone because it is acting up on me and it def. needs a refresher, but my main problem is that my power button does not work anymore, and i'm afraid the only way i have for it to turn on is if i connect it to a computer...when i just connect the phoen to a wall it just shows me charging...but as soon as i connect it to a computer it officially turns on.
So, do i need my power button to be able to complete the rom change, AND, is there such a thing as a rom or an app that would allow me to turn the phone on with a different button????
Thanks for your help peeps it is greatly appreciated!!!
Did u tried alt+shift+del button combination on phydical keyboard to reboot?

Maybe 'reboot recovery' through adb or terminal emulator.

Since my power button is broken, if ever it shuts down or needs to restart and doesn't automatically, i don't want to have to unplug it and/or temper with it...so basically well, that was exactly my question; will i ever need my power button while flashing/changing roms on the device?
If not then i will go ahead and do the rom change.
My 2nd question was, since my power button is broken, my screenlock/unlock is also unfunctional and if ever my phone shuts off i can't turn it back on unless i connect it to a computer. Is there such a thing as an app or a feature(from a specific rom) that would allow me to configure the phone to turn on with a different button? Same thing for the screenlock/unlock.
I hope i explained myself better
Thanks for your time!!

Can't help you for the first question... Think it's impossible to boot without power button nor plugged USB.
But for the second, it's known that all CM (at least since 7) have this option : wake up with volume buttons
Some other ROM include it but can't tell you which one. Sorry.
What scoutme saying is correct, when the mobile is turning on and if u have pressed the camera button, it will trigger boot to recovery mode.
One more suggestion, why don't u use quick reboot widget, it has option to reboot to recovery. It does all what physical power button does. Try it out...

I've been dealing with this problem for about 6 months or so, if you are about to start from the scratch like sdcard partition and sbf and applying stuff I guess there's' no way you can do it...
All I did was downloaded the required ROM and placed in OR and I got a app for getting to recovery which is "Quick Boot"
Search on play store, its free ;which has got 4 options in it namely reboot, recovery ,boot loader and power off ...did it that way
Hope this helps

To wake up the device (booted device, that has a locked screen) you can slide out the keyboard. CM7 indeed has a setting to wake it up with volume keys. For CM9 I do not remember and CM10 does not have that option yet as far I have noticed (I could be wrong, though).
What ROM do you currently have? Motorola stock? CyanogenMod? What version?
If you have non-moto it is rooted and has a busybox installed. You can execute
Code:
reboot recovery
form Terminal emulator which will take you to recovery. You can also connect it to computer, open Command prompt/Terminal (depends on your PC OS) and execute
Code:
adb shell
reboot recovery
Ccommand
Code:
adb reboot
to reboot the device or
Code:
adb reboot recovery
to reboot directly to recovery should also work. I'm unsure if it works on moto stock.
(Make sure you have enabled USB debugging in Settings.)
After that you should be directly in open recovery menu. Or press Volume up + Camera button if "stuck" on triangle screen.
Keyboard key combo, Left shift + Right alt + Delete reboots the device.
No matter what method you used to turn on the device you should be able to boot to recovery: while device is booting press and hold the keyboard X (needs to be done early in the process) to boot to recovery if you have bootloader 90.78. For previous bootloader vesions the camera button should do the same.
To boot to bootloader you need to press and hold D-pad up while the device is booting. Afaik, command
Code:
reboot bootloader
will boot to fastboot mode which is of no use for flashing sbf files (I can only assume that 3rd party apps and widgets use that method to get to bootloader/fastboot). You need bootloader mode to flash vunerable recovery, if not done already.
As minor side note, you have posted a help request in a Development section. Plus, all of this has been discused already. It is mostly scatterd around but not impossible to find.

I get into recovery by plugging it in anywhere, PC or wall, then hold X while its booting, once the recovery screen shows up, unplug, let go, and press whatever buttons you need. If its not X that you have to press, press whatever you need to when its booting.

For your question 1, please install this in your phone: http://www.mediafire.com/?wvw2sde2eldw2x4
there will be two icons in your phone afer installed, one for power off (can reboot into Recovery)
,another one is screen off.
For the second, all CM6(cm7 not sure) have this option : wake up with volume buttons (setting>cm setting>input setting>volume rocker wake)
By the way, if the PowerLock.apk doesn't switch you to recovery, you may need to copy this to your phone:
http://www.mediafire.com/?kvq45p4nscjwf88
How to use 60autoboot_or :
1) copy it to your system floder first
2) change permissions as:
VVV
VXV
XXX
3) then move it to system/etc/init.d
4) REBOOT

My milestone is still on custom rom, which is why i wanted to change it!
i'm trying to follow the guides on how to do it but holy sh*t do i feel like a noob. i used to customize the **** of my old windows phone and i've been out of the cellphone game in a while so im confused as ****.
Nonetheless, you clarified some good points, i thank you a million times for your time and patience; i'm gonna go ahead and try to install CM mod on here and hope it resolves all of my problems lol (gl to me ...)
oh and the reason why i ''lol'ed'' is beacuse all the terms he used in his post i was unfarmiliar with, so it was foreign language and i was confused as **** lol
Hi all.
I have a Nexus one , rooted and unlocked. with broken power button
While i was going through an update using ROM MANAGER, the phone restarted then halted on the X screen, I can get in the fastboot screen (recovery) but without the power button i can't select any option and go further than that. and if the phone starts normally it stucks on the X screen.
I tried removing the sim card and SD , and tried the command "C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.4-
passion.img" it succeeds flashing the file .. but what shall i do next???
the google driver (ADB) is installed on the device manager on my PC, and recognized while stuck on the X screen. BUT if connect the device while on the recovery it is recognized as "ANDROID BOOTLOADER INTERFACE"
I also tried using SUPERONECLICK v2.3.3. but didn't work as well.
PLEASE HELP ME

How did you manage to fix your phone with a broken power button? I'm in the same situation; I have copied the PASSIMG.zip to the SD card as well.. how do I run it with a broken power button in bootloader?

Were you having a backup already present (Backed up using an App?) . If yes, then you can restore. But i don't think the other way around is possible.

If you plug/unplug 4 or 5 times phone boot itself (with an USB plugged in). Repaired a neighbour's N1 last month this way.
When phone boots, restart to bootloader and flash Blackrose, it uses trackball and volume keys to navigate, then what you want. You doesn't need the power button with this configuration (trackball could unlock the screen and to lock you can install some app or widget).
Anyway, I unassembled N1 several times (to clean it and to reconect the upper chip that it's been disconnected in a fall to the ground), maybe with a little care and seeing some youtube videos you can repair your button!

Is it stuck at the white HTC splash screen that says quietly brilliant or the boot up animation screen that has the beats logo on it?
If stuck at the splash screen just hold power and both volume keys to force a reboot and see if it boots up then. If it is stuck during the boot animation you may have to try a factory reset.
You may still be able to do a factory reset depending on where the update failed.
Hold power and Vol down for until it boots into the bootloader. Then press the power button again to select bootloader. In the bootloader list you should see factory rest, use volume keys to highlight it and power to select it.
This will wipe all your data you had saved on the internal storage, but that would be better than a non booting phone.
Best of luck.

Crushalot I have a similar issue with my HTC one like xiang5377. Except my phone is stock no root nothing, actually it was given to me to root. It has been a long time since I have rooted a phone and im lost here. My friend got the phone online which might have been his first mistake, second I believe it was from China. In any case lt me explain what has gone on, I have been looking for instructions in unlocking bootloader in fastboot mode which is not an issue, I found it but I am unable to get to the bootloader by pressing power key and VOL down.....strange so I looked under settings to turn off fastboot and the option wasn't there at all. When I press VOl down and power key it goes to some strange looking menue in Chinese REALY! OK so I searched Google and fopund a post that suggested it might be a fake. So I tried VOL up and power key and it took me another strange looking screen. I actually had the option for "normal" "fastboot" and something else:fingers-crossed: Nothin stayed at that same screen for ever....so I pressed VOl down and power and it reset. I went back to that screen gain picked the one option should not have and now im stuck at htc quietly brilliant sceen:crying: I have tried all kinds of key options and still nothing NED HELP!! I am unsure if the phone is internal sprint T-Mobile etc... 100% stock.

Might need some screen shots. It sounds like it may be a fake HTC One. Can you look at the bootloader screen on this fake and see if yours is similar:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362301
Or look here:
http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/14/fake-htc-one-plastic-mt6589/
If it is one the fakes then I'm not sure what to advise other than trying to return it and get a genuine unit.
If it is real then we might be able to do something. Are you able to reboot it by holding both volumes (up and down) plus the power buttons for 15+ seconds? It should cause it to reboot.

NO joy on reboot. I looked at that video and it seems to be the fake one, might explain why I wasn't able to get to the bootloader normally. This sucks now I will have to explain to my lieutenant that he got a fake one and I might have bricked it lol! What would you try next if it were real, or will I have to wait till it dies and still run the risk of it not booting up normally again. I was never able to get to normal bootloader.
---------- Post added at 04:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:45 PM ----------
Also looking at the video, it had the same black menu not the white menu I have seen in other videos, indicating a newer OS. It also did not show fastboot option under settings/power option
http://imageupload.co.uk/files/36ha7p8hdv926l90b0l6.jpg
On the pic above I actually clicked on: [UART Boot] option and im stuck
If it was real, it would respond to the normal reboot commands and allow us to reboot the OS if working or boot to fastboot so we can use fastboot commands to see exactly what we were working with and decide the next move.
In you case, you may just have to wait until the battery dies and then perhaps it will boot normally, as it seems the clones don't have the same button commands to perform operations. You could try different combinations of button holding to see if it will reboot.
There may also be some more information on the Chinese forums, but could be hard for a English speaker to navigate and fin the info needed.
If the seller sold the device as a genuine HTC One then, obviously that is illegal and you could try to use that angle to force them to return it.
Best of luck.

If the seller sold the device as a genuine HTC One then, obviously that is illegal and you could try to use that angle to force them to return it.
Best of luck.

That IS stock recovery.
if you want to get to the menu, I believe you have to simultaneously press POWER + VOL UP + VOL DOWN briefly (you're probably gonna have to try a few times to get the timing correct.

yeah any time in stock recovery (green or red), you may need to try several times to get to the menu (like the other post I linked)
Well, thanks to this post I entered the recovery.
I made a lot of combinations until I got the good one. You have to press VOL UP + VOL DOWN buttons together and a half second later press power button. :good:
I'm at this point and I get this quick error message then the phone reboots. What am I missing? I'm stock on my way to root. I'll see if I can catch that error message. Oh, it happens when I try to do the 'install from phone' option, or card, I tried both and I get rebooted as described.
Okay, something about 'check id failed' and more but it comes and goes so fast. One more time...
Okay, "invalid operation... rebooting...". Also, before all that it says something about missing cw file too.

Two years later this was helpful, even after being on Chat with Eduardo P from HTC and he couldn't tell me how to get into Recovery! Thanks! Managed to clear my cache after a recent update to 5.1. Hope it helps!
worked like a charm....

It was life saving for me Bro . I had no idea whatsoever to solve this. If you Don't mind, i have a kind of tricky question here, i had gone back to my stock rom that is sense 5.5 with android 4.3 because i liked the camera feature (the slow motion option and the sequence shot and the group photo edit, i really loved it:victory which is missing after the OTA update to sense 6 and android 4.4. Is there anyway i can retain those stock camera features, hope you understand what i mean. It would be very grateful if it is possible. Thanks in advance, and thanks again for saving me from the recovery issue.

No man, it's not possible, it's just possible to download an old stock rom with Android 4.3 and Sense 5.5 to have the camera app back, otherwise there is no any other option.
i cnt do it...can u explain????

No mean as in bootloader unlocked and can flash factory images
pratchaya, when you start your N6, do you see at the bottom of the screen a picture of a padlock with the lock open on one side?
1. Go here, https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
2. Download this, https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/shamu-nbd90z-factory-92e7bb05.zip
3. Power off phone, hold down power+volume down, boot into bootloader
4. Extract contents of zip to your computer
5. Flash fresh install of Android on your phone
Actually do this instead now that i've thought about it.
1. Go here, http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
2. Download the latest version of Nexus Root Toolkit (v2.1.9 as of writing this)
3. Install onto your PC
4. Use NRT to Flash Stock + Unroot
I use NRT all the time when wanting to flash beta images from Google. Never had an issue with it.

That's what I was gonna tell him, but it won't work if his bootloader is locked, or if he could just flash the recovery through fastboot and side load the OTA from there

Maybe i don't know this just because my bootloader has been unlocked since the day i got my phone.
But i would imagine that google's STOCK image would be flashable, even with a locked bootloader...
But if it's not, then that sucks.
But NRT has the option to Root+Recovery from the fastboot/bootloader...But once again, not sure if you need to be bootloader unlocked before that will work.
I guess you have nothing to lose trying and seeing what happens.
If he holds down the three button salute, it will take him to the bootloader where he can run fastboot OEM unlock to unlock his device then flash just as long he has unlockable in developers settings checked.

Hi, I don't know about bootloader lock or unlock.
But I'm a normal user , just use my nexus as normal user ( original from factory + update + upgrade + reset sometime ).
Is this mean bootloader lock ? sir.

Hi, I can't see any picture except these photos.
Well, that's puzzling. I've just restarted my N6 to be sure of my facts, and there is clearly a screen before the four dancing icons you show in your first picture. The very first thing that the phone shows on boot is a pure black screen with "Google" in big white letters in the centre, with (on my unlocked phone) the picture of an unlocked padlock at the bottom.
Are you saying that you don't see this?
=============
And while we wait for the answer to the question above, please try this:
- Power off the Nexus 6 completely.
- Next, press and hold Volume Down, Volume Up and Power simultaneously – don’t release the buttons until Fastboot Mode menu appears.
Note that this is not what you've already tried - this should get you into Bootloader mode, whereas you described the Recovery procedure in your first post. Does this procedure get you any screen? If so, please describe what you see.
(Further edit: just noticed that biggiesmalls657 suggested this on the first page, but I think that pratchaya appears too inexperienced to know what you suggested).

You guys are incorrect
This isn't possible unless the ROM starts and he can check OEM unlock in the developer options
And he can flash the OTA file with a locked bootloader but he has to have a working recovery
Have you tried a Hard Factory Reset?

I just said that!
Edit: Did you notice force closes before all this happened? Lots of force closes when doing a factory data reset sometimes means it's hardware with the internal storage. If you can't boot into Android to check OEM unlock button and fastboot doesn't allow you to flash while locked then I am not sure then.
