[Q] Soft bricked HTC one - Help!! - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Noob mistake, so much easier with samsung phones.
Ive just sold my HTC one on ebay and attempted to return it to stock from android revolution HD 12.
unfortunatly after relocking the bootloader it seems that i chose the wrong RUU and now its messed up. Im in the UK and I choose a Europe version but it didnt work, in my fastboot screen the phone states my radio is 4A. 14. 3250. 13. But it said asia, needless to say I tried it as it was the most accurate match to my phone, and that didnt work either. The phone was bought unlocked from Phones4U in the UK, which RUU do I need.
Here is the link to the list of available RUU's
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39588860
any help would be appreciated as I need to get this working to send off, thanks

Which hboot do you have?
If you have 1.44 use the revone tool and you can use all the ruu that you want.
But, for which ruu do you need now, you have to give us your build number like 1.29.xxx.x

[Q] Want to restore TELUS unit to as stock as possible

Hi Guys,
I want to restore a TELUS Canada HTC One back to as stock as possible for warranty exchange purposes.
There is no RUU available for TELUS, but I do have a TWRP Nandroid backup. The device's HBOOT has been updated to 1.54, and the device is currently S-OFF / SuperCID via Revone and obviously unlocked bootloader with TWRP recovery. As well, the device is running the ARHD ROM.
What order / process do I need to follow to get this back to as stock-like as possible?

-Manually flash back the stock 1.44 hboot (and any custom splash you may have flashed)
-Nandroid restore (make sure it includes recovery, if not manually flash the stock one)
- Set CID back to stock
- S-on with revone
- Relock bootloader
Let me know if you need help with any of the steps.

The Nandroid should include the stock recovery.
The stock hboot can be downloaded here: http://d-h.st/qfc
It is from post 2 of sneakyghost's guide which has the instructions as well:

Curious -- since making a Nandroid requires a custom recovery, how would that Nandroid contain the stock recovery?

A few different ways. First, once you have a custom recovery installed, the 2 main recovery's used (TWRP & CWM) have an option to backup the recovery.
Second, when a new user unlocks their bootloader, they can then use fastboot commands to boot the custom recovery but keep the stock recovery installed and then it can take a backup of it. Example would be:
fastboot boot customrecovery.img
Also possible via a few different other more complicated methods.
If the nandroid you download doesn't have the stock recovery (the few that I downloaded for parts all had the recoveries, so I assumed it was a requirement before they would post a backup) then just give a shout around here and I can find a link for you.

Not sure why I'm having so much difficulty with this.
I've restored the 1.44 HBOOT referenced above.
I've restored the stock TELUS ROM via TWRP referenced above.
I can boot into the phone, but I have no touch-screen response now. Also, that TWRP backup did not include the stock recovery and I'm not sure which one I should push.
Tried flashing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41953560&postcount=32 and now I have a red triangle recovery.....
OK, everything is normal. The red triangle means it is the stock recovery.
The touchscreen doesn't work because you must have updated your firmware. If you still have s-off then you can downgrade that back to stock before s-on and re-lock. Go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2316726
Download and install the package he has for " Base 1.29 Firmware, original unmodified"
After that you should be stock and just need to s-on and re-lock the bootloader.

Here you go bud. This is the stock firmware from 1.29.401.12. It has the stock radio and recovery(just in case).
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36946918/1.29.401.12.zip
If you flash that, it should put everything back to complete stock in regards to the firmware.
Should be able to s-on and relock afterwards and should be no signs of mods.
Let me know if you need help finishing up.

Well now I've done it. Reflashed the firmware, put my CID back to TELUS001. Went back to S-ON, locked BOOTLOADER.
Now I am showing TAMPERED / LOCKED.
I reunlocked the bootloader, and am now showing TAMPERED / UNLOCKED, with stock recovery. I put back on TWRP and it shows TAMPERED / UNLOCKED.
I tried re-running REVONE and I am unable to go back to S-OFF.
What the heck happened?

Can you verify your hboot is back down to level 1.44?
If it is, we should be able to revone to s-off again, but we may need to try a few times.
Did you have tampered displayed before you went s-on?
It did display locked rather than relocked so that it good. However it must be picking something up as non original as that is what causes the tampered flag.

Yes, I am on HBOOT 1.44 from April 2013.
Tampered was not present before (I had hidden it with Revone). Tampered came back only after I re-locked the bootloader (with the stock recovery via firmware file you provided to me).
I tried to go S-OFF but I keep getting error 2 or 6 when doing ./revone -P
Meanwhile no issues doing 2 other phones with Revone (fresh out of box).

I had one phone that gave me trouble with revone. I tried it like 20 times and nothing was working. Then I ran all the commands in a terminal window on the phone rather than adb shell and it worked. Can you try that?
There are also some other good tips in the revone thread, but I forget them all and will have to read it again.
It wouldn't have been the recovery as that for sure was the stock recovery. Did you download the stock nandroid or did you make it yourself?

[Q] Help! Problems to unroot M7_UL!

Hello everyone,
This is my fisrt time writing in this forum, hope you guys can share some knowledge with me. Here is my issue:
I bought a HTC One to a guy a few weeks ago with barely no use. The thing is that I didn´t know at that time that the device was rooted with the MaximusHD. When I realized about it I reset my phone to factory settings and the new 4.3 3.22.1540.1 got installed. Thought it was ok but it is still doing some weird things so I decided to unroot the device to stock, also for warranty porpuses.
The problem comes when I try to download the RUU for my device due to I cannot find it. Should I do it through other method? Do I have to S-off to downgrade and install the RUU 1.29?
My phone is the following:
M7_UL PVT Ship S-On RH
Baseband 4A.17.3250.14
Hboot 1.54.0000
OpenDSP v31.120.274.0617
It is the european unlocked/international version bought in Spain.
I would really appreciate if someone could give a hand on this and guide me in through this process. I was an iPhone guy and now I'm freaking lost.
Thanks so much!

Thanks for the reply. I've tried to s-off my htc but it hasnt worked. So I downloaded the recovery stock version and after installing it, the device told me that my phone doesnt appear to be rooted and if i wanted to install supersu, i declined and then made a recovery. Phone looks like unrooted, although within the bootloader it still shows "tampered" and "Unlocked". The recovery mode that the phone had installed has disappeared so I dont know what to do now, should I continue to s-off the device and then put it down to hboot 1.44 and follow the unroot guide???
I would like to make sure my device is unrooted in order to gain warranty privilages just in case i need to send out my phone to htc...
Thanks!

You don't really have a choice, unless you have the RUU for your phone. Can you post the results of "fastboot getvar all" so we can try to figure out what to do.

Just a quick note here, "version-main: <blank>" I never like that.
BTW, when posting "fastboot getvar all" it's preferably to remove IMEI and s/n; we don't need to see that.
You should probably get s-off as @attanasi0 suggested and then run a "HTC__304" downgrade RUU. (You can only downgrade if you're S-Off)
Just my two cents

Right, it shows just OS- but nothing else...when i bought it the guy had installed the MaximusHD 13 and I updated through OTA to the MaximusHD 20 but wasnt going smooth so I reset it to factory settings and It installed the JB 4.3 (3.22.1540.1).
Today after trying to s-off without success, I downloaded the recovery stock version for the rom I had and flashed it and the recovery mode that I had before disappeared and the baseband upgraded to 4A.20...instead of the 4A.17 that I had before that. Did the guy who sold me the htc messed it up? is there anything I can do to set my device to factory settings?
Thanks for the help guys! I appreciate it!

Well from the information available, you have
- hboot 1.54
- m7_ul
- PN0710000
- CID HTC__304
this would lead me to assume you have a 2.24.401.x based phone.
I would try to get one of the following Guru Reset ROM:
2.24.401.8 : http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_2-24-401-8-zip/
2.24.401.1 : http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_2-24-401-1-zip/
flash one of them in recovery, then follow the rumrunner steps to try to achieve S-Off.
If that is successful, then you can downgrade back to stock, using this RUU (exe): http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/ruu_m7_...1-27_10-31-1131-05_release_310878_signed-exe/
check your "fastboot getvar all" after that.
Once you've done all that you can use revone (or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477792) to remove "TAMPERED"
and also revone (or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475914) to get you're phone "LOCKED" if you so wish
Keep S-Off !!

"black screen with a caution simbol in red" that's stock recovery, you need to flash back a custom recovery. download (if you dont have one) from the xda threads, then enter bootloader (shut off phone, hold POWER + VOLDOWN) enter FASTBOOT, connect to PC and it should change to FASTBOOT USB
then
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash recovery <name of recovery>.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
-> enter RECOVERY
then "install ZIP" in Aroma, deselect "stock recovery" so you don't need to flash it again.

No problem, TWRP you mentioned should work just fine. It's the same as installing a custom ROM. I havent used TWRP but it should say something like "install zip", then find the zip and flash away.
Hopefully, that will give you a chance to successfully run rumrunner; remember to read and follow the instructions to the letter!
Good luck and keep us posted (fingers crossed)

Well I installed the custom recovery, then flashed the stock rom 2.24.401.8 as you told me. Once I did that I ran rumrunner successfully gainning S-off.
Now I have to run the RUU but the one you suggested me is the "RUU M7 UL JB 50 HTC Europe 1.28.401.7 Radio 4A.13.3231.27 10.31.1131.05 Release 310878" but my radio is 4A.17.3250.14_10.39.1150.04L. Should I try to install it anyways? I've taken a look at the rest of RUUs and none fits my features...
btw every time I flash the stock version at the end it tells me that my phone doesnt appear to be rooted and if i want to install supersu, i always say no and after that my recovery always goes to stock, i guess it is normal, isnt it?

Go ahead and flash it, it will downgrade everything (now possible thanks to S-Off), and you will then receive the latest OTA package(s) to get to the most current version including radio.

Hey! I have tried to lock it but after typing adb shell I get this "[email protected]:\ $" instead of the # that you are getting. I've tried to type "su" after that but it says that the command cannot be found. Also, when I type the code "echo -ne..." it says that I have permission denied so dunno what to do now...
Im asking in the lock/unlock threat but they just told me that its because im not rooted and that i have to install a recovery and install superuser in order to be able to introduce the code, dont really understand why I have to root it afer unrooted it :S

You should have LOCKED it before running the RUU, because that's what made you loose root.
So before proceeding, can you give me an update of your status:
bootloader: locked/relocked/unlocked?
tampered?
ROM?
"fastboot getvar all" (remove IMEI and s/n)

Help me please! :(

My current situation is : M7_UL PVT Ship S- On Tampered relocked & unrooted again. No Rom installed, no backup, no recovery!
:'(
I tried installing RUU file but it failed, tried two/three different RUUs.
Also tried to achieve S-Off but maybe I'm to dumb & it didn't work.
I'm out of ideas, please help me

Im pretty sure you cannot boot into a custom recovery with S-ON
To remove the TAMPERED and LOCK the bootloader, you will have to S-OFF using rumrunner for hboot 1.5x or revone for hboot 1.44
The current Rumrunner can work with a custom rom e.g. the latest version of ARHD or Insertcoin ROM that has an unsecure kernel. To do this though you will have to unlock the bootloader using htcdev and install the custom rom and then S-OFF

Yeah you cant boot .img files any more with s-on or s-off htc removed it in the now HBOOT and fastboot.
Dont panic mate its really easy to fix
Simply download ARHD from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183023 make sure you have all the latest drivers and everything installed and rename the file to rom.zip you will need TWRP for this i believe and simply boot to recovery (TWRP) and push thw file to your sdcard using adb push rom.zip /sdcard (takes a while) simply flash arhd rom.
Once your phone boots you can use rumrunner.us to s-off the phone. Follow the instructions on their site. Once thats done boot to fastboot and use the command fastboot oem writecid 11111111 you will now have supercid and you can now flash any ruu you like. (unless you need to downgrade hboot.) If thats the case pm me and i can guide you through it on here.

I used to use ARHD but I switched to maximus HD because of the OTA and the 360 camera mod.
So to upgrade firmware you want to boot into fastboot and type "fastboot getvar mid" write it down then go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485651 and download the correct version against your mid.
Put it in your adb/fastboot folders and making sure your still in fastboot type "fastboot oem rebootRUU"
Once you phone boots into update mode you will see a HTC logo on your screen and nothing else.
Rename the firmware you just downloaded to firmware.zip and type "fastboot flash zip firmware.zip"
It will say say failed pre hboot update flush image again. Simply type the exact same cmd again "fastboot flash zip firmware.zip" and it will flash the latest firmware.
The progress bar on your phone probably won't go all the way up but as long as cmd says finished its done so just type "fastboot reboot-bootloader" and if you look your main-os will have changed.
That's it.
Your on the latest firmware meaning all the Roms should run smoothly and you should have no more issues with exposed.

Yeah afraid so. Tbf I don't know of that is the case for every phone but the m7_ul UK edition couldn't get it to work on any device I tried after contacting a friend who I have inside HTC's repair centre he claimed the feature does not work with the latest hboot.
I might see if I can get some other devices from work to test this further and if it is true for all variants then maybe enroll on a workaround

Both cid # and mid # MUST match the main-ver you want to flash. CID and MID require s-off to be modified.
i.e if you have a x.xx.161.x main-ver, you need corresponding MID PN0710000 and one of compatible CID like VODAP001 or VODAP102, etc... (Vodafone)
i.e if you have a x.xx.401.x main-ver, you need corresponding MID PN0710000 and one of compatible CID like HTC__001 or HTC__101, HTC__203 etc... (stock international)
If you have a CID that doesn't match your main-ver, your phone will not find any OTA update
If you have proper CID but wrong MID, your phone will find and download OTA, but will fail the update process.
f you want to convert using a RUU, both CID and MID must match otherwise the ruu will not flash.
copy/paste the output of this command
Code:
fastboot getvar all
minus emei and sn and it will be much easier to tell you what options you have.

So go to this thread and install adb/fastboot.
turn on usb debugging mode on your phone ''settings ---> developer option ---> check the usb debug box'' if developer option menu is messing from you settings menu do this: settings ---> about phone ---> tap the build number rapidly until you are prompted you unlocked developers option.

You'll probably encounter problem later in the process with win 8.1. Win 8.1 require hboot 1.55 for fastboot to work. During the process you will need to downgrade hboot to 1.44 to flash the international RUU. And your phone will not be recognized by computer when using fastboot and you will be stuck there. So better to find a windows 7 computer or maybe you could dual boot win 7 on the same comp.
now you should be able to continue with next step even with win 8.1
so start Minimal ADB and Fastboot, a command prompt should open. with phone connected to pc and usb debugging enabled, check that drivers are working properly with this command:
Code:
adb devices
should output this:
Code:
List of devices attached
HT(yourserial#) device

So does this procedure requires rooting?
And if it does how can a rooted device receive updates from HTC?
And once the whole procedure is complete will my HTC One be still rooted?
And i could get a window 7 pc tomorrow , so will continue the remaining procedure tomorrow.
If u could pls give the detailed procedure, i would perform it tomorrow and will let u know .
Thank u so much for helping out.

[CLOSED] Limitations/risks of downgrading HBOOT?

Hi all,
I'm considering downgrading my HBOOT from 1.55 to 1.44 in order to restore the 'fastboot boot' command (a bug that HTC admit to). What concerns me is whether a particular HBOOT version is compatible only with a certain range of firmware releases and so whether I risk bricking or bootlooping from a downgrade.
Another, related question. Is it safe to use, for example, an international HBOOT (*.*.401.*, likely from PN0710000) on my Rogers phone (*.*.631.*, PN0712000)?
Anyone know whether these kinds of dependency exist, or whether HBOOT and the contents of other partitions are completely independent of one another and no crosschecking is performed? It seems to me that HBOOT 1.44 is the real sweet spot given the simplicity of revone and the ability to boot from an image that's not on the device itself.
Full disclosure: I'm running an M7_UL on Rogers (PN0712000 and CID ROGER001), S-OFF, bootloader unlocked, no root with currently stock 3.22.631.1 firmware and ROM.
Thanks folks,
Ian

fastboot boot recovery.img was intentionally removed in higher hboot, not a bug.

Not 100% sure but I have downgraded to 1.44 many time and it did not caused any issue.

I used .401 1.44 hboot on a pn071200 dev edition .1540 and it did not caused any issue.
I don't really understand why you want to flash 1.44 back when you have s-off...? downgrade to 1.44 only if and when its needed.
Many thanks for the rapid and informative response alray!

That's the mustard right there! I don't know if anyone knows the definitive answer on all this, but my gut tells me that (for GSM single-SIM handsets at least) the further down the software->firmware chain you go the more generic the code becomes. Your findings seem to support that theory.

Yeah, it's because I would like to back up my stock recovery before rooting, so I want to boot a custom recovery via fastboot and use it to take a nandroid of the stock recovery. Again I don't know if stock recoveries are tied to a particular firmware or ROM release (any idea on that one?), but I'm trying to play safe!
In general I find there aren't too many Rogers images out there (HBOOT, firmware, OTA, RUU...) which makes the rooting dance that bit more tricky for us. I tried to grab the OTA file when I recently went stock to go 1.29.631.17 -> 3.22.631.1 but of course one needs to root in order to access /temp to go get the file and I didn't want to root before I took a vanilla backup - catch 22! I don't suppose you have a 3.22.631.1 stock recovery lying around do you? It'd save me a whole load of trouble
Cheers,
Ian

stock recovery can be extracted from the ota package in the firmware.zip file.

You can't make a nandroid backup of the recovery image but you can pull it using "dd" commands

yes, use the recovery that match the version of your phone firmware/software.

There is a recovery collection here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545227
but there is no 3.22.631.1 which is an old version btw...

you might want to take a look at what I have done: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54167697&postcount=1095
look under "for reference, here is how the recovery was pulled:"

Oh? Bummer In order to dd from the hboot partition I thought I'd need to be rooted though? And wouldn't I need a custom recovery in order to root? Or am I wrong and I can dd from fastboot or adb without root? If I can then this'd be an ideal solution and I wouldn't need the HBOOT downgrade after all
Huge thanks for the edit and pointer to how to dd without root!

Yes I've combed my way through every repository I can find, but like I say ROGER_001 is a poorly-served CID I guess if I was really pushed I could go SuperCID and use the TELUS one I see there!

Yeah the reason I'm so keen to have a complete path to downgrade to stock 4.3 is because I'm not convinced I ever want to go beyond 4.3. 4.4 makes Google Search become the shell, which is a line I'm not sure I want to cross

Yes you'll need either root or to downgrade hboot to 1.44, boot a custom recovery (fastboot boot), use dd from the custom recovery shell to pull the stock recovery from mmcblk0p34 partition. look in my previous (edited) post. I have posted a link explaining how to do it.
That's stormin' alray! Now I finally have a viable route forwards.
Big thanks,
Ian

just make sure to type the dd commands correctly, it could brick your phone if you make a mistake using dd commands...

Hah, yeah, touch wood I've never yet bricked any device using dd, but I'm clear how powerful/dangerous it is as commands go
Okay so I just want to finish up this thread for those who might use it as reference later.
I followed alray's excellent advice and downgraded HBOOT to 1.44 (using a 1.29.401.12 file from here) - I've been running if for a few days now and all seems fine. The phone was slower to shut down for the first few reboots - it would hang on the 'HTC logo' page for around 10 seconds or so - but now even that has gone away and it behaves fine in every way. So then, complete success running HBOOT 1.44 sourced from a 1.29.401.12 RUU on a handset running 3.22.631.1 firmware and stock ROM, that originally came with HBOOT 1.55.
FWIW I also successfully copied out the stock recovery by fastboot booting a custom recovery and using dd.
