Storage issues- Irrelevant 'USB Storage' partition - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I have Galaxy S (int. i9000) and have installed CM 10.1 and using Semaphone as a custom kernel.
I don't know how did this partition named 'USB Storage' has come into existence leaving 'Internal Storage' just 1.5 GB.
I know that CM has been installed on this 1.5 GB partition since my phone in spite of having 12 GB free in the 'USB Storage' shows 'low memory storage remove some apps' and that 'Internal Storage' only has 0.220 GB free.
There is no ext. micro card inserted into my phone.
I would also like to mention that the break up of the storage partitions just keeps on displaying 'Calculating' even after leaving the phone in the same state a full night.
It would be great if someone could help me sort this issue by deleting this so called 'USB Storage' partition.
Thanks in advance
P.S.: Refer to the attachments.

Can someone please help me with this? At least point me in the right direction. Please?

partition layout may be changed and has changed in custom ROMS by developer of your ROM, so read your ROMs, developer thread, Here your internal SD card is known as USB Storage, which is what it is.

Internal memory is "locked"

Dear guys,
I have a very strange problem with my tab. The internal memory seems to be “read only” after restart.
Ai have this problem after I stopped a transfer between my laptop and the tab (a movie). The problem is that o can’t format internal memory, to fix any fat leaks. I try to wipe all, flash with every know firmware from h__p://w w w.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-p1000.htm, format internal memory from CWM. Every format command works (finish format ok),
I can used the space on tab (even accessing from laptop) but when I restart my tablet I have the old content.
My question is what the f__k is happened and who to fix it.
Many thanks in advance!
Any one??!?!?!
Any one??!?!?!
I can't help with the solution but fwiw I have exactly the same problem. Samsung's only suggestion was to send it in for repair but I'm hesitant to do that because all my data is still on the device. I've tried hard resetting it but everything comes back as soon as I reboot. I can remove or install application but they reset as soon as I reboot the Tab. I cannot make any kind of permanent changes to it.
It's very frustrating to say the least. Anyone have any suggestions for what would cause this? Mine is still a stock device with only a few market applications.
I also have some issues with internal "SDCARD" and that is that i cannot move anything onto it using andy SGT filemanagement system or the very bad KIES software. At the moment my external SD is full but the internal SD has like 14GB free and i cannot balance the storage!?!
If I move programs to SD will it me moved to internal or external SD and can I choose the setting?
The only way I managemd to move stuff into internal SD is to download files like films and music via DLNA over WiFi - those files are saved correctly were I want it...
any advise would be appreciated...
So this means that i can't repair my tablet?
I can't find any solution for this problem. and i believe that we are not the only one with this problem.
I send it to service... they replaced main board...
but canceled my warranty reason: unauthorized software intervention - root access
So... watch out for this. factory reset you tablet or mobile (if possible... in my case was not possible)
Thank you for your support.
I have the same
I have the same exact problem ,, anyone can help plz ??
Hi:
I´ve just discovered this forum. Hello...
Just the same problem here and Samsung doesn´t repair my device. Can you give me any help?
Regards
This is exactly the same problem I've encountered. Moments AFTER rooting the thing.
Which leads me to believe any and all warranty question is well out of the window.
Has anyone encountered a solution as yet?
I appreciate the posts above are a few months old so I'm hoping some sort of resolution has been found!
Same problem here too
Internal mem seems fine and you can delete things, but after reboot nothing is remembered.
Gave it to service (non samsung/carrier), They said that the p1000 is known for having bad internal memory problems.
They partitioned my 8GB external sd card and installed a Chinese MIUI rom 4.0.4 that is supposed to support installation and running from external SD mem.
The problem is they didn't remove the internal memory - so all old apps still exist there and can' t be removed (it probably mounts the internal mem and thinks it can write to it - but in practice nothing is written). So when i go to market and try to DL an app it says no memory left on device because it tries to put it on the internal mem and not the external.
Also, after reboot all the account setup wizard screen settings are forgotten and you need to redefine everything again.
I saw a thread on XDA that explains you need to remove the internal SD mem physically (and explains how to do it) but i am a little afraid to do it...
Anyone else try this ?
Also strange you need to change the whole MB for a faulty memory, why can't the internal mem just be replaced ?
Hi, please keep all question/help related threads in the Q&A section only. Thank You.

[Q] Use full Nook eMMC capacity for CM internal storage?

Just got my Nook Color tonight. I booted it from a CWM microSD card, installed CM 7.1 stable, gapps, and ran ROM Manager to install CWM to internal memory.
When I go to Menu, Settings, Storage, under the 'Internal Storage' heading, it says "Total space" of 5.09 GB and "Available space" of 4.68 GB. (One app installed so far)
Looking farther down the screen, it shows /mnt/eemc to have 1.00 GB of space.
Is there a way to combine them so that I have 5.68 GB of usable internal space to install apps to? Also, are those two the full available capacity of the eMMC storage? If not, can it be enlarged to maximum?
Also, further down the screen, it shows /mnt/usbdisk, with no space. Should it be left intact, or can it be safely removed to limit my confusion?
Thanks!
+1 to your question.
I'm gonna use my NC only as a tablet not any book reading so I don't think that 1GB is required.
Still let's wait for a dev. to give expert advice about this and possibly a how-to...
I would leave /mnt/usbdisk alone as it will be useful if you decide to use flash drives through nook tweeks in the usb section. As for the emmc data area, you can store data there with no problem if you are not going to use the nook as an e-reader.
By downloading the nook tweeks app, you will have access to the micro usb port (through an adapter) to transfer data between the nook and a flash drive or (using a powered hub) a card reader. You can also transfer data between the nook and a camera to directly save photos to the nook or view them. Usb host mode opens the nook up to another level and makes it a very functional tablet.
I use my nook with a digital camera on photo shoots so that I can preview my shots on a larger screen than that of the camera. You can check out my threads here concerning host mode. PM me if I can be of any assistance.

Hey there, I know long time but iI have some info to share since I'm having the same configuration as yours.
The 'Internal Storage' you're seeing isn't exactly the emmc. Its just that cm7 doesn't know its put on an SD. And it thinks the second or third partition of the SD (i.e. cm7 system partition) is internal.
Also that /mnt/eemc is the actual internal memory and thus these 2 can't be linked. However, the nook has another 5gb emmc internal partition callednmedia which you can possibly combine with emmc.

there are many threads about the NC partition layout and changing it. do a search. the 5g partition basically won't be used by your cm7 NC. the apps will go on the 1g. I repartitioned mine for 4g instead of 1g and 2g for /emmc. then you can set cm7 to swap the /emmc and /sdcard and then use the NC without an SD installed.

I was thinking something else.....
I wanted to merge internal data and media so as to get combined partition. I'm running CM7 off the SD card so I don't need to switch them. I was just thinking of merging them.

Yes, I understand that's what you want to do. However, those partitions are not contiguous space. Search on Nook Color partitions and you will quickly see why.
Specifically, look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371
which links to here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13971291&postcount=110
/dev/block/mmcblk0p6 is the "data" partition
/dev/block/mmcblk0p7 is the "cache" partition
/dev/block/mmcblk0p8 is the "/mnt/emmc" partition
You are wanting to combine "data" and "/mnt/emmc". Problem is the "cache" partition is stuck in between them.
The other problem is your NC uses these two partitions for different things.
I think the suggestion I made before, which is to repartition for 2GB+4GB as in the first link, then do Settings -> CyanogenMod Settings -> Application -> Use internal storage to get them to swap, is the best, simplest solution with the lowest risk. This uses the 2G partition for whatever normally is used for /sdcard by most apps (downloads, misc. files, temp storage, etc.) and 4G partition for your apps, and leaves your whole SD card for use solely for your side-loaded media content. This schema will not interfere with further CM updates or unnecessarily change the default partition scheme for which most of the devs are writing code.
If you want to become a Linux & Android master of partitioning and storage management, then you can probably implement a more custom scheme. In my last job I was a software engineer working on a Linux-based network-attached storage appliance and I wrote most of the system code dealing with disk and partition management, so you could say I know a lot about it, but still I chose the easy path for my NC.

Thanks for the info. But I'm just a highschool sophomore who loves technology. Can't do this unless someone has ever tried (and succeeded) before.
I'll probably use your method when I install CM7 (or CM9) onto emmc.

Problem mounting internal storage on JB Roms

Hi
Some time ago I tried JB Paranoid Android and my internal and external storage worked fine but switched back to ICS roms because of the problems JB roms had.
Now I guess they are more stable and wanted to try again so I installed Utacka's P.A. and I couldn't mount the internal storage. Some apps like camera said I had to insert an sd card. My sd card is mounted as my internal storage and the internal storage isn't anywhere.
I thought it was a problem with the rom so I went back to rocket miui and everything was fine.
Now I saw the cookies and cream Rom and wanted to try it but I'm having the same problem.
I searched in this forum for similar posts and tried ICS SD Binder and it doesn't work (or maybe I'm doing something wrong) and Remount Sd without luck.
According to Solid Explorer, my "Internal" sd's path is /mnt/extSdCard ("Internal" because in fact it's my external sd card) and I also have a /mnt/sdcard folder which says it's empty.
I would really apriciate any help and I'm sorry for my bad english and possible spelling mistakes.
Thanks

I had a similar problem, I used ICS SD Binder, checked all 3 options and rebooted. It worked for me. Did you check all 3 options?

Yes, I did. Every time I reboot ICS Binder force closes so I guess it isn't really doing anything.
Do you remember which original mount point you chose?

It force closes for me too. Though quite annoying, it still works. I chose the something that looked like mnt/ExtSdCard (maybe I didnt spell it correctly but it is the closest to that spelling.) I think the original was odb... Try and lets see if it works...

It's not working for me. When the phone reboots, at the beginning appears a message saying it's checking for errors on the sd card and if I enter to settings/storage it looks like if it is mounting correctly because it says internal storage 11 gb and it looks like if it is scanning it and external storage 29 gb. Then ICS Binder force closes and the external storage desapears and the internal stoage is 29 gb.

Note cant see internal usb storage

So my Galaxy Note has just stopped seeing the internal usb storage. I have a 32GB SD Card installed and can read that fine but the internal USB storage has unmounted itself somehow. When I go into settings and storage and try to mount the usb storage, it does not work, it just flashes up with "Preparing USB storage" and then nothing happens.
File explorers can't see the usb storage but can browse the SD Card fine. Some aps are running, some do not run properly as a result (eg Swiftkey keyboard works but can't access text prediction etc).
Presumably a file is corrupt somewhere and stopping the phone from reading the internal storage somehow but I am not very techy.
It is running the stock Samsung firmware with Android 4.1.2. I've turned the phone off and on a couple of times, taken the battery out etc.
Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Maybe formatting it is the last option if changing ROM doesn't help.
I haven't tried a factory reset yet, that is probably the next step. However, will that effect the EMMC bug? I guess the other alternative is to flash with a ROM, probably the same one I have now but as I have no experience of doing that, I will need to take some time to read up on the process etc.
Thanks E.Cadro for moving the thread.
Hello, I'm currently facing the same issue as well. For no rhyme or reason, the internal phone storage is not detected. Trying to find ways to salvage the memory as there are some stuff that's not backed up.
Does any one have any tips on fixing it before trying the last resort of formatting to factory settings?
Some details:
Stock samsung firmware running 4.1.2
Not rooted
Sent from my LG-E988 using Tapatalk 4
I'm just not seeing why a factory reset is such a big deal (from a safe kernel of course)
So you have to spend 20 minutes setting up the phone again...
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
Point is to try to save the storage as I have mentioned, some things (photos and stuff) have not been backed up yet.
Sent from my LG-E988 using Tapatalk 4
I resolved the problem by doing the factory reset. Not such a big deal but lost some data in the process that I could not back up because of the internal storage not being mounted. In my case the data I lost was not such a big deal as most of my important stuff was on the ext sd card or in a cloud somewhere.
After the reset, the note is obviously like new and running very smoothly. Makes me think I should do a reset every so often to clear out apps that accumulate and just to give the phone a fresh start.

[Q] KitKat Partitioning Issue

At the risk of sounding like a complete n00b, I come to you all with an issue I'm experiencing. I know it's an operator error, so bear with me;
I just recently flashed Milaq's KK build. I increased the /system partition using the new CWM w/ data/media to 512 mbs. Everything is running well, but all the apps I install are installed to the internal memory, which maxes out around 1.4 gbs. My question is, how do I make the default install location the virtual ext SD card?
I hope this makes a bit of sense to you all - because I'm about to pull my hair out here.
Thanks for any/all input on my current situation.
I understood the partition/directory structure in my previous CM7/CM9 installs.
But with the new datamedia storage configuration I'm confused to all the various labels for the memory storage areas.
I've read the document at http://teamw.in/DataMedia
but the situation is still not very transparent.
• Under Android settings I see "Internal Storage" and "SD Card" and "USB Storage".
• In ES File Explorer I observe:
/sdcard ->
/external_sd -> /storage/sdcard1
/usbdisk -> /storage/usbdisk
/storage/emulated
/storage/sdcard0 ->
/storage/sdcard1
/storage/usbdisk
• In X-plore I also observe:
/storage/0
/storage/legacy
• CM File Manager app top level directory is labeled as "0":
It appears there is various crossover in directory mappings. Is there a definitive guide as to the partitions, directory structures/mappings and symlinks that apply to the above memory areas. There is already enough contradictory posts in various development threads on this so not asking for assumptions/presumptions. Hoping to hear from an expert/developer who knows this stuff on back of their thumb.
And what controls/manages where new apps are installed?
Good Question I also would like to know
While looking around the internet, I found this as a potential option;
In terminal;
su
pm set-install-location 2
I attempted it, but haven't noticed any difference.

I think you are looking at this wrong. Instead of making Android use the external storage by default, you just need to make the data partition bigger and use that as your default storage. Milaq himself suggested this partition layout:
system - 600mb
cache - 200mb
media - 400mb
data - [remaining space] (i.e. ~11.5gb for 16gb TouchPads)
If you are going to go with Milaqs builds, The best way to do it is to move all your stuff from your sd card to your computer, wipe your sd card, use tailor in webOS to repartition to match what Milaq suggested and move all your stuff back onto your device in, I think, the sdcard0 folder (which should now have the majority of the space).

Thank you for your response - it was exactly what I was looking for. I knew I was overlooking a step.
I'll get around to doing that tonight.
Again, thanks so much.
I had the same question. But I just used tailor to resize the partitions. If it says file system error, let it fix it. As long as there are free space, all your files will stay.
Just posting a follow up;
Installed Tailor and repartitioned as per Milaq's instructions, and everything is working as it should be.
Thanks for the help, guys. Glad to know it was just my reading skills that were lacking.
