Heimdall Won't Recognize Phone - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my cousin's old captivate from him that he used to root/hack etc with and I want to restore it to stock. When I use Heimdall Frontend 1.3.1 on my Mac after putting the phone in download mode it says the phone isn't detected. My cousin doesn't remember what he did to the phone but now it says the firmware is "2.1-update1", the Kernel version is "2.6.29 [email protected] #2" and the Build number is "ECLAIR". I'm not sure what all it means but after googling I'm pretty sure that isn't stock. I'm not the best at doing this sort of stuff but I can't find any results or answers for what to do. Is there a way to get my computer to recognize the phone? Thanks

Android 2.1 Eclair was the original OS at the time of release of Captivate. 2.3.x Gingerbread is the latest update from Samsung. I'm not familiar with Mac computers, but you have to fix your connection/driver issues.

I'm able to mount the phone and see all its files and stuff when I plug it into my computer. Does that help to figure out what's wrong?

Google what USB driver you need for Mac computers.
Mounting as storage and Download mode are two different things.

I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be googling for. Sorry for being so terrible at this. How would I find the drivers? I can't find anything on Heimdall's website

Look for Mac OS-X installation package. Sorry, can't help you further, I don't use Mac computers. If you have access to Win 7 computer, then Odin one-click back to stock packages are super easy to use. More info in Development section, sticky threads in very beginning. Good luck!

You could always use mobile Odin to flash back to stock. Google mobile Odin. You can find it in the Google play store or probably find it here on XDA using the search feature. Just read carefully.

Wrong forum.
Did you install your samsung drivers, etc? You probably have since you were able to root. Did you open up ODIN then?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
If you are able to get into download mode, then there is no problem flashing back.
i didn't use odin to Root i just put a rom on my device and then flashed it through rom manager and recovery mod

Yes, this is not Development related, its general Q&A.
If you backed up your previous ROM. you can just perform a factory reset, otherwise you need to use Odin, make sure device is in debugging mode, and flash the stock ROM found here.

Flashing Back to Stock ROM using Heimdall

I am having THE hardest time flashing back to stock rom using heimdall. I dont know how to use it, unfortunately i cannot use Odin..if anyone could instruct me on a step to step guide to getting this done, that would be great. i cannot seem to find one after looking for a good hour and a half :/ i got to samfirmware.com but once i download it asks me for a password and i input it (the one it shows to input) and it doesnt work.
Thank you
Just wondering, why can't you use Odin?
Sent from my Cappy using XDA App
something like this
Code:
$ heimdall flash --factoryfs factoryfs.rfs --cache cache.rfs ..... --kernel zImage
just type "heimdall" and it will print the usage format. you can flash whatever you want.
Tell us what OS you are using. Do you have the most current version of Heimdal?
Also, try unzipping the firmware with a different tool.(what are you using)?
The reason I cannot use odin is because I have a mac and odin is not mac compatible. I am using precision v3.5. Firmware 2.2.1 I've used the normal text editor and zipeg. And I have the most recent heimdall

so since you are already on a 2.2 rom we will hope you are not having the mac sbl.bin problems.
steps are:
1 grab the stock firmware from here if you want froyo
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=963403
or find the equivalent eclair version in the forums or on the samsung firmwares site.
2 unpack the archive
3 unpack it again so you just have the various files in a folder. there are 4 important files in the froyo linked above and one .dll you can ignore.
4 put your phone in download mode
5 put the 4 file in the proper slots (see attached image)
6 hit start.. wait...
If Heimdall cannot see your phone you might be having the sbl problem. head over to the main heimdall support thread and search around... ther are quite a few mac users over there
Has anyone sucessfully been able to flash Samsung stock 2.2 using Heimdall?
For some reason when it's flashing factoryfs it fails at 43% "failed sending data packet"
I have downloaded KB1 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=963403
And tried the .zip file that Kies downloads during it's upgrade process, both do the same thing.
Ultimately I'd like to find a universal flashing method to be able to restore my phone back to stock. While also being able to flash Clockwork kernels for rebuilding CM7.
The only way I've been able to get CM7 to load successfully is to Odin1Click back to JF6 then use Kies (which requires a different USB driver) to get 2.2 loaded.
Then install USB driver for Heimdall, to flash a Clockwork kernel for CM7 load.
If something goes sideways this process starts all over again.
Reinstalling USB drivers over and over again is getting rather tedious.
Would really like to find out why Heimdall is failing when flashing factoryfs.
why would you upgrade to 2.2 to get to CM7??? you can go to CM7 straight from 2.1 JF6
Bootloader question?
I made a post recently asking "What's the diff between 2.1 and 2.2 bootloaders?"
Nobody knows (or few cared to share their knowledge with the group). The best answer I got was, (paraphrased) 'none?'

At this point in time I'd be happy if I could get in back to 2.1....can't get either Odin1Click or Odin to reload 2.1...both are hanging when it tries to write the factoryfs files.
Which makes no sense at all...I had used 1Click twice earlier today and it worked fine...but now it's crapping out and no clue why.
Making me regret leaving my laptop at work...last time I had this issue I did the same process from my laptop and it worked.
Even stranger, first time I went through this process from this PC it worked...but isn't now.
Tried to get back to JF6 using download from samfirmware.com and using
Heimdall...will flash everything sucessfully (see attachment) except factoryfs. If factoryfs is selected, it chokes at 37%....attempted to flash factoryfs from command line and Heimdall fails with error "Failed to send data packet" or something along that line.

UPDATE: CM7 lives again, after Odin took 7 hrs. to push factoryfs to my phone only to have boot animation go garbled and lockup. I took my phone to work, used Heimdall on my laptop to flash JF6 and it was successful, was then able to re-flash Speedmod Kernel and CM7 nightly-50.
Next time I have to do this with my desktop I think I'm going to use USB Deview and blow away any Samsung devices listed.
i installed all required files in ubuntu , but i cant see gui interface ? like this

Any help for doing this with 1.3, since I have lion and 1.1 won't work.
Running Lion and Heimdall 1.3
I'm also on Lion and can only use 1.3. I have a Tmo Samsung Vibrant and would like to flash back to 2.1. I was able to root the phone just fine when it was on 2.1 from my Mac but since I updated to the official Froyo, I haven't found a way to root it again. Thanks in advance for any help.

[Q] Root GT-I9000M Noob

Alright so after 2 days of researching and getting ready to root my Samsung Vibrant, I've realized since I'm in Canada it's considered a GT-I9000M.
Carrier: Virgin Mobile Canada (Essentially Bell)
Firmware: 2.2
Baseband: I9000UGL2
Kernel: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #3
Build: FROYO.UGJL2
Phone is compatible of going into recovery (3E) and Download mode.
Been reading a lot of issues with one click so I found a noob guide by user s15274n http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 that seemed pretty easy. Was going to use odin to bring back firmware to 2.1 stock JFD (t-mobile) and then root with update.
Now since I don't even know if I'm considered a vibrant or not and what would happen if I use T-mobiles stock on my Bell phone I'm back to being mind ****ed on this rooting stuff.
Anyway I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks
I am in the same boat
Dude, you just explained my situation. I have a Sasktel Vibrant and have been looking into rooting this darn thing for a while. Unfortunately, it at least appears more complicated for us with our different(?) phones. Our phones are almost the same one, unless you made a spelling error in your baseband version. Mine has a j in it. Here is my info:
Carrier: Sasktel
Firmware: 2.2
Baseband: I9000UGJL2
Kernel: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #3
Build: FROYO.UGJL2
I did find this article here that appears promising:
androidforums dot com/galaxy-s-all-things-root/264530-flashing-darky-v9-gt-i9000m-minimal-risk.html
but I haven't convinced myself that it will work, and I sure as **** would hate to brick my phone over something silly. Lemmie know if you find something.
The easiest way to root is to use odin to flash a kernel that roots your phone. Check the development section. I'd recommend using speedmod's kernel-good kernel, and easy to follow instructions.. I'm running a i9000m as well, on SaskTel.
have done a lot of reading over the last week trying to work out how to root my SGS i9000M, checking both these forums as well as android & phandroid, as well as googling the issue and trying the Market. I've also checked out many youtube videos on this topic but they seem out of date now. I note the most recent thread on here by liv4air (march 2011) but it doesn't really help with my query.
I am a total noob with regard to this - only heard about rooting a couple of weeks ago but I definitely like the idea. My 1st handset had to be replaced due to a sound issue (it had 2.2 Froyo) - was replaced with a handset sourced for Canadian market (linked to Bell - has lots of stock apps from them that are useless to me). I'd like to get rid of them to start with, but this handset is running Eclair 2.1 - didn't realise this for awhile after it was replaced and didn't actually understand the differences between the builds and firmware.
So now i've got GT-i9000M, Eclair.UGJH2
kernel [email protected] #2, firmware version 2.1-update1 (updated via Kies).
I have tried the one click root download which put the 'update.zip' file on my SD but when I tried to install this in the recovery mode (have discovered that I have the download and recovery mode buttons - also totally new to me!) there was a red error message:
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(status 7)
Installation aborted.
Have seen the Ryan ZA OCLF in Market too, but understand that the 'rooting' ability has been removed from that app.
Have downloaded the Odin3 program to maybe try to root it via this method but am confused about how to get kernels/which ones to get...or even if that's what I have to do! can find various kernels etc at SamFirmware but not really sure how to use them.
Am I even close to working out how to root this phone!?
Please help!
did you try to flash a kernel and root your phone from recovery ?

no I haven't - the only thing i've tried is the one click root method which brings up a box offering "root or unroot" and this is what put the 'update.zip file on my sd. In recovery mode I scrolled down to the update sd option (below reboot and above the reset to factory etc options - ie. 2nd of 4 options) and that is what led to the error message. Have seen this on other threads so assume it's an old technique that won't work on my handset?
I have Odin v3 and get open the program ok - at least so it looks like the screenshots i've seen posted in forums - but I haven't downloaded any kernels yet. This is the next step i assume. Have found some on Samfirmware.com (including one for my very own build) but no idea which of those i need eg if i download the one for my phone will that just be the same as what i've got now? How would i know if one contained a root? And once i download it do i have to save it to any special location in order to use it / when i open Odin will it automatically pop in as a kernel to flash?
if you are just looking to root.... on any 2.2 just download superoneclick program, make sure you are in debug mode, plug your phone in, hit start, 20 seconds later you are rooted... lots of videos on youtube fyi

For now am just looking to root safely. 2nd step would be to play around a bit and look at other kernels/ROMs etc that would suit me, and upgrade firmware to either Froyo or Gingerbread...but all that other stuff is gonna require a lot more reading on my part before 'playing' as i've come across loads of threads describing various errors/problems people are having after flashing this or that.
i've been told to use lots of different methods eg. the superoneclick that you mention, Darky's 9.5, EZBase/EZOdin, using Heimdall etc etc and just as i think i'm onto something good, anothe method is advised. You mention on 2.2 but i'm on 2.1 Eclair - will the superoneclick method still work do you know?
I do not know if it will work with 2.1... i highly suggested upgrading to 2.2 your local mobile phone provider should do it for you if you take it in, it takes them like 30 mins maybe (just take it in with a full battery) other option is to download Kies which is free online provided by samsung, it should upgrade you to 2.2
I think if you can find z4root.apk in the forums or on google it used to be able to root 2.1
there maybe another version of OCLF with root option around in the forums or google.
I still suggested you upgrade to 2.2

managed to upgrade form 2.1 to 2.2 via kies at last - didn't work a few weeks ago but worked the other day. so....back to trying to root! downloaded the superoneclick v1.9.1 - my antivirus did freak at it but i see that that's expected.
problem - when i open the rar file or try to extract the contents or run the application inside an error screen comes up saying there was 'unexpected end of archive' and that 'the achive is damaged or corrupt'.
could this be because my antivirus program did something to it? should i try to download the file again with my antivirus turned off?

i'll have a look at that section and at speedmod. just a quick Q though about flashing via Odin - is a kernel composed of the pit file and the 3 other files for pda/csc and modem ie would i expect to get ALL those components and put them in the relevant boxes in Odin? (I have Odin and can open it fine - have not connected my phone yet to check that the yellow box confirms connection).
Still struggling to find the easiest/safest way to root!
a kernel is only a zImage file. It is TARed to that you can flash it as PDA in odin. No PIT.

I am in the same boat. I dl'ed oclf from the market and it doesn't root any more.
I tried the update.zip method and when I did "adb reboot recovery" my vol buttons allowed me to select "apply sdcard:update.zip" but when I press the power key it doesn't execute the process.

Tried EZBase too last week. No joy there either. Got the EZOdin, the PDA/CSC/MODEM files but could not get the .pit file - the link just goes to either a blank webpage on 2 different computers, on my macbook it goes to some webpage which only displays about 3 lines of gibberish - some complicated looking code.
I assume I need all the components? I've noticed the speedmod kernel only requires the PDA .tar file (this looked the most promising method recently but not sure if that kernel will actually root, or if i need to be rooted first in order to flash it via Odin).
Oh, the other problem with EZBase I found was that the PDA/CSC/MODEM files downloaded as .tar.md5 files
...shouldn't they just be.tar? Did I do something wrong/can I just rename them .tar? Hence my reasons for abandoning the EZBase method as haven't had any joy answering those questions!
You wouldn't think a phone should be all that hard to root?
It's not hard to root. I have the i9000M on stock UGJL2 (Froyo) Downloaded SuperOneClick v 1.8 by CLShortFuse from this forum as there are no rooting apps any more on Market. Put my phone in USB debug mode started the program then followed directions. Try here for detailed instructions and a video if you want a preview. The directions are very good though and I chose it because I didn't want to use the 3E method.

all sounds easy as pie...you convinced me to try again with the superoneclick method. However.....
1. v1.8 is not available via the thread link - only v1.9.1 and drivers for 1.9.1 or v1.7
2. the little youtube vid showing instructions (which also makes it look supereasy) advises to download the latest version, so i downloaded 1.9 - this time i disabled my antivirus in the hope that it would not interfere with the file which is what i assumed happened last time.
3. yet again when i go to extract the files form the .zip file there's an error saying the file is damaged or corrupt so I can't get the application to be extracted.
back to square one. haven't tried v1.7 yet. maybe i'll give that a go, but i assume it will have bugs that are why it's been updated to versions 1.8 and 1.9??
extracting the 1.9 drivers also does not work - "unexpected end of archive"; funnily enough the application does actually appear extracted but when i try to run it as administrator windows says there was an error and forces the application closed.
so no joy at my end with this method!
i'll try v1.7 (just to see if it extracts successfully really).
nope - get this warning when i try to download v1.7
didn't get this even with the 1.9 download when it contained a virus so have elected not to try to get v1.7.
and so endeth the superoneclick method as far as i can tell......
FINALLY!
Success via SuperOneClick after all! Was going nowhere with the links on the xda thread so went to shortfuse.org and downloaded the v1.9 via that site (see attached pic for the link to click on).
It downloads a folder with all the required files/drivers etc. The application is within the folder and it opened fine when run as administrator. Followed the guide which is to essentially just tick USB debugging, not to mount the SD card and clicked "root".
It sailed through the process fine and then asked if i wanted it to install busybox as it was not detected. I did, and it did.
Superuser icon in my application as it ought to be. Didn't have to reboot or anything. Only literally just done it so not sure if there are any bugs/ill effects as yet from having rooted it but will report if i come across any.
go for it bob!

Captivate Spazzing Out! Help

So i was running that leaked 2.2 on my captivate. I have a mac, so i couldn't update to the stock 2.2. It has been getting really really slow lately. And freezing all the time. So i was going to find a pc to update it with. But then today, it just starting vibrating all the time. I turned it off, and back on. And the homescreen comes up and i cant click anything. Then the screen turns black and the capacitive buttons on the bottom are lit up but i cant do anything. I tried turning it off and on like a million times and i dont know what to do. Is my phone bricked or what?
got a problem with your laucher app.
take out SD card, boot into recovery with the 3 button method, factory wipe.
if that doesnt work,
boot into download mode with the 2 button and usb method and flash the official 2.2 stock with odin rom or if you are going to custom roms flash 2.1 with odin, then the custom rom with clockworkMod recovery (cwm)
Yay that fixed it, now does anyone know how i can update to the stock 2.2 on a mac? Also is there a working 2.3 rom yet that will work on the captivate.

And wouldn't it work the same using Odin weither it's on Mac or Win?

Dont know what that is, im not very firmiliar with android stuff. And i think the program to update is Kies not odin.
keis is the crap samsung gives customers to update automatically!
odin is the samsung program we use to program the phones with whatever-the-hell we want!
a jig puts you into download mode (this jig for samsung only) download mode is what you need to be in for keis or odin to flash your phone
Look up instructions for Heimdall.
Heimdall doesnt work on a mac until you update the boot loaders to the offical 2.2. Personally I think its crap and you still need a windows machine. Your better off just searching thru the development forum and flashing something cooked in there. There is a lot of really stable stuff in there as long as your not chasing the absolute latest and greatest. I have a mac and have been down all the roads. If your dead set on flashing official firmware parellels and virtual box do not work, you need a windows machine or you can use windows in boot camp on a mac.

yeah ive been using things from the developers forums for a while, and they always seem to be buggy, i would just like to use the official one for a while. I guess i will just have to do it on a friends pc.
If you use virtual box and have it running windows then you can do an offical update on what ever computer you want... virtual box is free and all you have to have the the iso of the OS that you want. Virtual Box runs on windows mac and linux. So with that knowledge everyone should be able to work and flash any rom on any computer
Good Luck

[Q] Heimdall Won't Recognize Phone

Thanks

Mobile Odin back to stock. Lite version is here on XDA, pro is on the market. All you need is a tar.md5 file, or a One-Click. Although you'll need a way to upgrade to the GB bootloader though, if you want to play around. Are you sure you can't bootcamp?
