C6603 Touchscreen calibration is way off - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
The touch calibration on my XZ (10.3.1.A.0.244) is way off, or the touchscreen itself has problems detecting inputs correctly.
For example, it often doesn't detect my lockscreen pattern correctly. Also, using the Swype keyboard, I can see that the swipe lines it detects are very wiggly/zig-zaggy and it therefor often doesn't recognize the words correctly.
Is there a way to calibrate the touch layer of the screen (It's not rooted at the moment)?
Or should I send it in for repair? I've had it for less than 6 months, so according to EU laws it's still under full warranty (I don't want to send it in, though - heard to many horror stories...).
Any advice appreciated!
cheers,
Dr.

Xperia doesn't have touch calibration... You must dropped it. Screen can't stop working just like that. You crashed something inside the phone.

It was like that from day 1, just thought it was normal. I never dropped it, and it looks like new from the outside. The touch resolution is very low (=bad) on the XZ compared to the phone I had before (Sony clearly cheapskated on the touch layer, you can even see how far apart the touch sensors are in certain light conditions).
And it didn't stop working or something - but if I swipe a straight line on the Swype keyboard, the line it draws is zig-zag, because the touch module is either faulty or just of bad quality (I suspect the latter, unfortunately).
Every touchscreen can be calibrated, but it depends if the manufacturer wants us to "mess" with the factory state or not. I found some calibration software for older Xperias, but not for XZ, hence the question here.
I know I'm very picky about details like that (it's not like the phone isn't usable) but the phone I had before spoiled me, because it was so close to perfection, and the XZ just doesn't feel premium to me (except the price).
So, any advice or am I going to have to send it in?

One-week Review
I myself bought this phone a week back, and I must say, I am happy with the phone.
Fortunately, I didn't have the touch problem in my device. When connected to USB though,
the voltage levels are screwed somehow and the touch behaves abnormally. But still,
files can be transferred with ease. The processor is kick-ass! And also the notification LED!
The battery drain is there, which stems from the various junk-ware installed, but mainly due to
Media Storage and the Google Location Sync. Camera is pretty good for me. However, one downside
I found is the Wi-Fi reception. Sucks big-time! Keeps dropping signals frequently, however does not
affect speed when connected.
Taking both downsides and advantages of this phone, I am in love with my device! Rest is up to you
to decide whether the downsides are grave enough for you to change your choice to another model!
All the best! :good:

Biggest negative point of Xperia SP is its camera. Daytime photography is ok but nighttime pictures are crap. As u mentioned that the wifi router is in your mom's room so the wifi signal strength would be fine. Few people have reported the touch problem but that is when the phone is connected to USB cable or wall charger. Other times the touch response is great. The display is sharp and colours are good, but it is a bit reflective. This issue is when outdoors, but one can always increase the screen brightness.
Best part is the performance for its cost & that LED notification bar, makes the phone look sexy.
So if camera is not the most important requirement, go for it bro.

This issue is with almost all the Sony phones & not only the Xperia SPs. That is because the display used by Sony in their phones is not as good as the display used by some other manufactures like Samsung, HTC etc. However the problem is not severe. You can still use it outdoors if you manually increase the screen brightness a bit. I am from India & even my model is C5302. I have not faced any phone restart issue with my SP till now.
Good luck with your purchase & wish your mom a happy birthday.
P.S. Try to use the "thanks" button (on left side, below the profile picture) for saying thanks. It reduces the number of unnecessary posts written just for saying thanks.

You can have a look at Glaxy S4 mini, Nexus 4 or Glaxy S3. These cost about same as Xperia SP or slightly more. Xperia L is also an option.
But as far as value for money is concerned I feel Xperia SP & Xperia L are better.

Xperia Z1 touch screen problem

My touchscreen is really bad right now it has problems sensing touch
Two video examples which are exactly like my problem
1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj1P0X12r_A ----- Start at 0:24
2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0sqwwUoEPc
I thinks it's a software problem since most Xperia Z1 users are having this problem?
Thanks for all your help!
Edit: Apparently many users are having this problem... Just found another vid : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD_PS7EoQI8
In my opinion, its software problem related ..
I mean the sensor maybe need more tweaks and stuffs ..
Anyway, its just my opinion

Alright, thanks for your opinion... I'll try to go back to older firmwares to test wether it is hardware or software related
If this is a hardware problem, Sony will have some BIGGGGGGG trouble
EDIT : Okay, I have just went back to 524 firmware to test and I can confirm that the problem still persists.
As I wrote in the other thread my phone seems fine, tried 5 times. Someone said that it happened when you got in contact with the aluminium.
So I took the phone out of its case and tried, still fine.
More ajour the issue here

http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z1/xperia-z1-touchscreen-problems/td-p/410611
I've noticed a loss of touch across the right edge of the screen, most noticable when playing candy crush and i want to switch on the far right, but in normal use it's absolutely fine, points to software in this case.
If you want to know if there are problems then download a multi touch app and move your finger across every inch of the screen, if you lose contact you'll know theres a problem and you'll have some tangible evidence when you take it back to the shop.
Im so pissed at this crappy thouch screen.. if i type to fast and not hard enough it wont register it.. aspesially annoying with the spacebar.. its like 50/50 chance its gonna work each time.. is this hardware or software?? Such an high en product and it really sucks.. gonna go back to my s3 if this isnt fixable..

I'm starting to rather dislike Sony now . I can't believe so many problems can be found on a $5998 HKD, HIGH END smartphone . When I first saw an Xperia Z1, I immediately fell in love with it. I decided to save up all my money to get one, for a few months I only used 1/4 of my lunch money for lunch. And then you know what? I end up with a f*cked up touchscreen, bootloader unlocking problems and a yellow, ugly screen that don't want to see anymore. More then 6 of my friends are gonna buy an Xperia Z1 (cuz they saw mine) But I'm gonna make them change their minds and buy something else.
I thinking they assembling the product with different quality hardware for differen continent. I got mine all original and working fine. I just saying.
We are some people on the sonymobile forum with the issue.
I have a brand new Z1 on the Way from the store now.

I'm planning that also. However, I'm still giving my z1 a chance until the kitkat upgrade next yr.. If it really sucked again then it's goodbye sony and choose Nexus from now on.
I have the N5 and trust me, it has it's fair share of problems. The RMA thread is over 40 pages long http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515575&page=40
The speaker is an absolute joke (through headphones it's not bad), the camera once again is subpar and battery life is half of what I get with the Z1. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to like about the N5, just don't get pissed off at Sony and go Nexus and think all your problems will be solved.

You're right, However if switching to another device will solve our main gripe then it would not be so bad. I really dont want to give up on my z1 however it really sucks to have this kind of problem. Everything is working fine, no overheat, wifi issue, black screen, yellow tint. Just this annoying touch problem.

I agree, on a device this expensive it should defect free. I have the yellow screen issue but not the touch problem. The yellow screen is definitely annoying because no screen adjuster I have tried solves the problem. And when you compare it side by side with a N5 or HTC One, you really see just how bad the yellow hue makes the screen look. I guess I can live with it now and hope for a solution but it's a shame there has to be threads like these full of the typical QC problems that Android has become infamous for.

[Q] Sony Xperia Z as a business phone (daily driver)

Hi All,
I've been considering switching BBerries @ work to Sony Xperia Z for 2 reasons - 1. Android & 2. Apparent resilience to shocks, accidental drops
I've had several friends buy Xperia (TX mainly) and they reported a lot of instability. I'm generally advised against getting one for business purposes.
Now I've got more experience with Samsung phones and AOSP so my question to the community is. How good is the Z out of the box. Would you advise to flash a specific stable firmware or just going vanilla?
Lastly how's the resilience of the phone? There are some impressive videos on youtube as well as underwhelming ones (mainly due to the plastic protector that scratches super easily)
Oh and I'm open to suggestions as well for other models/brands (requirement is running android 4.2 at least)
Thanks

Is it that bad of a phone?
I have Go and Z as daily phones. I work for cnc & industrial maintenance. So far (about 10 months) both phones has survived without major failures. Few drops and lot of moisture and harsh environment. Best thing is you can rinse phone with water it it gets dirty. I would recommend to get GOOD screenprotector and for Z just some simple cheap case which you can replace if it in bad shape.
Only thing is using phones with gloves on. Basic thin gloves are ok but usually gloves with protection against sharp objects won't work.
And also speaker is the weak spot. Some of my friends clean the speaker with magnet if it gets dirty. I haven't tried this yet..

Thanks for your reply. Have you experienced any software bugs, restarts, etc? Do you have your email pushing to your phone all day over 3G? How's the battery life?
Thanks!
With Stamina mode on it's day to three days. I use K9 with listmail widget and it's working ok. No real problems, and using with dock it's good for office use. Depends quite lot of Internet usage and other stuff. But no real complain yet. Just new keyboard is not so well suited compared to old T9.

That's quite a lot of battery (if it even gets close to 2 days) What about without stamina mode on?
I love Swiftkey for keyboard. Give it a try
I just wonder if it'll last from Morning till Evening (6am - 8pm) on 1 charge with several calls a day and emails syncing all day as well.

Just to be sure, are you talking with or without stamina mode? In my experience Data eats quite a lot of battery life particularly when syncing all day. It oftens prevents deep sleep if you got bad reception.
And is there a 'better' firmware for the phone? I seem to see various issues with 4.3 on the Z

Screen on time isn't affected by stamina mode, as stamina mode only activates when the screen is off. Stamina mode only has a negligible affect on battery life in my experience in any case.
If I use my phone normally, ie make a few calls, send and receive a few SMS and emails with some internet browsing, then I normally have in excess of 80% battery remaining when I get in at night. I have all syncs enabled at all times.
The usage you describe will never drain the battery in a day.

The Z has a glass back and front screen. I cracked my screen while the phone was in my pocket during a meeting. Maybe the ZR or the ZL may be better suited for you if you tend to keep the phone on you/ on surfaces that may cause it some shock / damage, unless you're purely interested in water resistance... In that case, the Z1, Z1S, or the ZR may fit your requirements....

FullHd screens draind battery like hell.
I also use z as primary phone for work. 3 exchange accounts connected via push settings, linkedin account and also every kind of messaging application works on background. (Working international, everybody uses different mesaaging system, so i have to install all of them.)
Also social media applications like facebook, twitter, instagram, pinterest etc etc.
Bluetooth sbh50 connected allday. At least 3 hour call and 3 hour music over bluetooth device.
Several remote connections made with phone. Also wifi hotspot in day time.
Still i can get one full day with one charge.
I've allways set my device to one kind of network. 3g always.
if you use 2g/3g/lte section, phone will allways look for faster network in area. That mean your phone allways in search mode. That might kill your battery in several hours.
That situation is not for only xperia z, search mod will kill all phones.
Just keep in charge while you are sleeping, keep battery for when you need it. If you sleep and recharge for tomorrow, let your phone to sleep and recharge for tomorrow.
You might also consider to get Z1S. 720p screens more battery friendly. I have also xperia sp. Definitely more battery frindly because of screen.

I appreciate the details. May I ask what firmware you're on as well? I may consider the Z1S. As a reminder this is for use at the office by my colleagues who have been on black berries so far. So obviously they'll complain about the battery. But the scenario you described puts my mind at ease.
I'm using latest version .569.
But still if you compare with blackberry all smartphones will take lower battery usage. Because of blackberry devices a little dummy phones.
How big your screen you will consume more power, how fancy and complicate your device, will consume more power.
Recently my company renewed all phones. All blackberry users are still happy because of more friendly and powerfull phone.

Your opinion on this phone?

Hi guys, I currently have a Sony xperjia s and I love the device. However my upgrade is due in may (a long time away yes I know, but I want to be prepared) and I want to know your thoughts of this phone, pros and cons, etc.
I really dont want to move away from Sony but I have read some bad reviews like the camera shots.
Would you recommend this phone? Would you not? Any other suggestions you might recommend?

The yellow hue of the screen. double check first the screen of the phone before getting one. I hope your S has a great screen and if does that should be your reference. Yellowish tint is very much evident on gray areas like the notification bar. Though the latest update, .136, has the white balance and it resolves that issue but having an at least almost perfect phone at the beginning is better right. So far the battery drains fast but that is if you're a heavy user. Just use Stamina Mode amd you're good to go. Superior Auto is a hit and miss but when using manual it's great. Screen is awesome but it could have been if it is IPS like the one in Z1 Compaxt but then again it is AWESOME.

Phone is really crap! Bad screen, yellow hue, too much overheating I don't install games because of this, camera button very loose, other buttons feel like they are going to fall off, battery is good, but camera is crap even low light tripod shots are awful too much noise for such sensor, no 4K video recording, glass is not scratch resistant while holding the phone I scratch the back with my ring (I removed factory protection )... I've been SONY fan since Sony Ericsson and I gave this Z1 a chance after having Z and I must say I'm moving to Nexus ... Sony doesn't care about built quality anymore. If you want gaming this phone is pain in ***

still worth?

hey i wanma buy xperia z phone used person, is worth? how about battery ? i read in internet and i found sony SOD sudden of dead symphtom. guys whitch are using xperia z do you see any issies with your xperia z??? plz answer me i'm very dissapointed.
Well, honestly, I don't think it's worth buying at this time. I mean there are lot of good new phones with newer hardware available which will be best for buying even if u want buy a used phone. But if u want to play with your phone, like flashing different Roms, Overclocking etc. for fun purpose then you may buy Xperia Z. I've been using Xperia Z for almost 3 years and its my daily phone, didn't face much of a problem expect some screen issue like 1 or 2 pixel dead and LED bleeding... and some unable to receive call problems in some Roms...
so , i buy g2

xperia Z is one amazing device with
1. 2gb ram
2. from jellybean to kitkat and finally to lollypop (5.1)
3. never hanged (atleast the one set i have , never does)
4. no drmkeys issue ( you can simply extract by using various xploirts)
5. kernel by @shoey63 adds double tap to wake, and swipe to wake gestures!
6. no over heating issue like later sony devices
7. C6603 supports 4g
8. sleak design
low side
1. dying speaker,
2. if you make your device wet and it touches speaker(s) then until the material (clothtype) dries, you won't hear anything
3. cannot be used without skin or cover, device is so sleak that it will slip through fingers
so , is it still worth buying in 2017.. ?
if 5g had already came in market, i would've said "NO"
but i would say .... YES, it's still worth buying even in 2017 as the box material has dock, car charger, nfc tags, usb data/carge cable and wallcharger (some shipments also includes atleast screen protector)
there are many models in market having 2gb ram in 2017 on competitive prices. so if you find good deal on xperia Z (c6603)
i think you must buy!
@YasuHamed.. i think i buy z2 or maybe z3
