Yes, Definitely the only way, Samsung intended for their phones to be upgraded.
In the past (could be due to Microsoft animosity) KIES was a headache to get it to function, But lately it has improved, so yes go ahead and connect it with KIES and follow its directions to the dot.

It could be due to some modifications you had made or some updates had made to the build.prop would cause KIES to believe its not one of their models that has an upgrade. In that case IF you are not using a branded phone ( some Branded models use only KIES Air for upgrades and cannot use international firmware), you can chose a ROM even 2.3.6 (the final gingerbread version for i9000) from the firmware for your region and use odin3 to flash. Flashing guide and firmware from here

[Q] About risks of flashing froyo and branded phones.

So on samfirmware you can download the froyo firmware and other files, and now I'm wondering: how safe is it, if I have a branded phone (austria (drei)), to flash the firmware? It says for jpm I need to first flash another firmware from there, so I'd probably do that too.
What does really happen though? Will it be unlocked and/or unbranded, could it break something, and is there a way to backup my firmware in case something goes wrong?
And how would I get it back when flashing breaks something, like if download mode then doesn't work anymore or something.
Oh and, hi I'm new here
I also have the SGS from Drei.at. If you would like to unlock your phone,
it's turned out to be (surprisingly) very easy: just download from market SGS_Unlock.apk.,open it - and you will get your code.
Now, if you want your phone being unbranded and running better than before, but not Froyo although: you can make the registry hack and upgrade to the latest official build via Kies. Here is what I did:
".....I changed registry from
"SoftwareRevision"="I9000NEJG3/I9000DREDRE/I9000NEJG1/I9000NEJG3"
"ProductCode"="GT-I9000HKDDRE"
"HIDSWVER"="I9000NEJG3/I9000DREDRE/I9000NEJG1/I9000NEJG3"
to
"SoftwareRevision"="I9000XXJF3/I9000SWC/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3"
"ProductCode"="GT-I9000HKDXEE"
"HIDSWVER"="I9000XXJF3/I9000SWC/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3"
Now after upgrade, I have:
I9000XWJM2/I9000XEEJM1/I9000XXJM1/I9000XWJM2
GT-I9000HKDDRE
the 3 branding is gone, but in the phone it says :
Firmware version:2.1-update1
Build number ECLAIR.XWJM2........"
Now the phone runs much smoother, I don't notice any lags (before I had a lot of problems), and have some minor improvements overall.
The only thing I would like to mention is: now after upgrade, if I am going to Firmware upgrade in Kies, it says: "This device's version cannot be updated" instead of something like before: there is no update, as you are running latest version.... Not sure why this happened, but at-least I know that there some people also got this message.... may be it's because at first I've upgraded the phone and then unlocked it, but I don't know.....
Not sure yet how serious this situation is for upgrading the phone via Kies when Froyo will come out officially, didn't have time to research it... But in the worst scenario I always have the possibility to do it manually - 3 buttons download mode is working.
I know this is not exactly what you were asking for, just thought may be this info also would be any helpful.
Nothing stops you from re-flashing your carriers firmware either, so make sure you have a backup using rom manager or check and see if your original firmware is on samfirmware.
Also, backup your /efs folder just in case, and make note of your apn settings.

This is a really strange combination of firmware.
NE stands for H3G Nordic (Sweden)
Are you sure it was like that?
I900ONEJG3 would make much more sense (-> ONE Austria)

No mistake here, I copy-pasted that from registry before upgrading.
Thank you.
I also want to debrand my orange galaxy asap... I have unlocked it already and have backed up the efs folder.... Download and recovery both work... Not sure if i should go the KIES root or odin... But i freakin hate kies

[Q] GALAXY S GT-I9000 "This version of the device can not be updated".

Iam using samsung galaxy s GT-i9000, my android froyo version is :
FROYO:2.2
Baseband Version:I9000JXJPB
Kernel Version:2.6.32.9 [email protected] #53
Build Number: FROYO.JPJPA
PDA:I9000JPJPA
PHONE:I9000JXJPB
CSC:I9000JPJPA
I am getting the error in samsung kies "This version of the device can not be updated."
Please can any one tell me how to fix this issue . . since i really want to upgrade my galaxy, "ALSO TELL ME IS MY PHONE ROOTED OR UNROOTED" please reply . . . .
If your phone is rooted you have what is known as 'superuser' permissions. You can confirm if your phone is rooted by downloading a free terminal emulator from the android market. Tupe 'su' in the terminal and you will get a request for superuser permission. If this happens you have a rooted sgs. I am not sure about your kies error though, however if it persists there are many alternative ways of upgrading your firmware and can be found here on xda.
Hope this helps

stupid question: what kies version do u have?
Download Kies version 2.0.0.11032_12_9 from here http://tinyurl.com/3c8rkjp
I'd try doing what ManMountain suggested first. Update your version of Kies first. If there is no option to update through Kies go to the Samsung website and download Kies from there.
I have the latest version of samsung kies ..... I downloaded it from samsung website .... Please tel me how to root n install ginger bread offcial version ....
Official version Gingerbread you wait until Kies has the version for your phones product code .It is not a worldwide release its rolled out over days or weeks .
"This version of the device can not be updated."
= no update yet for your phone try in a few days .

Im not sure that is entirely correct...
Kies SHOULD say "Latest firmware already installed"
If you have the this device version cannot be updated you will need to do the kies reg hack to make it pick your phone up as something else and then install FW that way.
You may have to do a couple of FW installs to get onto GB

Download Root Check from Market very handy to find out if you've successfully rooted or not.
To root read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
To upgrade to Gingerbread read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037584
Read everything carefully until you're comfortable trying it. If you're not then don't, the good people on here make stuff like this a lot easier for all of us, so it shouldn't be too daunting
Bear in mind the official Gingerbread roms in the link above may not be for your region, they weren't for mine, but I upgraded anyway and everything's working fine (though the auto-brightness seems to have a mind of it's own).
Read, and re-read and best of luck if you decide to go ahead
Kies SHOULD say "Latest firmware already installed"
Never ever seen that or it reported its always been as the OP said and is even as i write .
Users should also be aware that Google have pulled the current update and i would not be in a rush to update yet .

i have the same problem! "This version of the device can not be updated"
and this is not about kies...before flash any room i had eclair (orange romania).
and after apears the froyo version on kies but there was no way to upgrade through kies...don't know why
maybe something is locked on the phone!
Kies is useless...
I had the same problem. Kies detects the new firmware version, starts to download it and gives the message that the device cannot be updated.
After wasting several hours I downloaded the JVB firmware from samfirmware.com and flashed using Odin in minutes. Anybody facing this issue should forget Kies and head to samfirmware.com...

The location has nothing to do with the update from kies. Even our friend Darkpal told us so here. I am in the Middle East(UAE) yet I was able to update to the latest Asian firmware although my tab has CSC for Philippines. There is also one report here of somebody from Malaysia who has updated to JPD.....
And even if he cannot update using kies I already provided the DXJPD file for him to flash.
CHEERS!
after tried with kies for my whole saturday daytime, i am still unable to upgrade tru kies. restart phone, computer, reinstal everythings. finally, i am almost give up. so, just use the one you gave= DXJPD.

Do you have a carrier locked galaxy tab?
no. it is unbranded gtab. i tried also your gingerbread (DXJPD). unfortunately it stuck at samsung glow text. go to recovery, it said E partition not mounted. now revert back to froyo.
my step using odin: put the.tar in PDA and click start with .pit file empty and repartition untick.

[Q] Still can't get stock fw on properly

Hi if someone can help id really apprteciate it. Dunno why this is confusing me so much.
Anyway I want to put stock uk firmware on my galaxy s so I can sell. Pretty sure it was the unlocked stock firmware.
I tried doing the reg hack on kies - it finds update and then says device version wrong.
I tried using spooffw - for some reason it updates the pda ok but doesnt update phone/csc (click ok and it reverts back to whatever it was on before)
I tried installing JM1 from samfirmwares and whent into kies and again says cannot update on this device.
Can anyone tell me what I need to flash onto this bloody phone so I can get kies to upgrade to the oficial fw.
I would like to put on a 2.1 rom and then have kies upgrade then I know its stock. I downloaded jf3 but that didnt come with phone or csc ? where would I get them?
first of all its not a bloody phone
then why you want to use kies? you can flash a rom by odin easily, just do some study for how to flash a rom and proceed,
kies sometimes have strange behaviours, personally I never used kies after I tried it once
I take it you want not the stock rom but the rom provided by the phone provider .
Two routes one replace the original rom you saved .
two flash stock rom lower version than current rom on Kies . Use a method of spoofing the correct codes for the original product .
Kies only updates if the correct codes for product firmware device and hardware are showing . Once you go the unofficial flashing firmware route Kies may not find these codes until you find the correct codes .
Stock = Samsung firmware Original = network branded that came with the phone .

Hi flashing a rom isn't the problem but flashing a rom that makes my i9000 appear un tainted by custom roms etc is where I'm having the difficulty. I wanted to do the final update via kies then I would know that kies thinks my phone has genuine firmware. If it wont update via kies then this is a clear message that the phone has been tampered with and I may not get the money from the company.

You are right I want original firmware. Main problem is I have no idea what this would have been. I didn't make a copy as my first upgrade involved doing a kies reg hack before there were any custom roms and I stupidly didn't take note of what I was currently on. What I do know is that my phone has never had any operator logos or software on it. (unlike my gs2)
I have tried doing the reg hack on kies 2.0 but apparently thats not properly supported yet (can I use an older kies 1.5 or something? or will it ask to be upgraded?)
I have tried using spooffw but step 3 (where you set phone and csc) doesnt work, when you press ok is reverts back to whatever it had on before no matter the value you enter.
Does anyone know of an o2 stock firmware that has been uploaded somewhere? ideally with pit, csc modem and pda. then I can hopefully use odin and then confirm that all is ok in kies?
Or if I am going to go the spoof route (probably with kies 1.5 as 2 is not playing ball) does anyone know what values I should use for each?
Thanks
well on www.samfirmware.com there is a list right at the bottom for provider FW, maybe one of them is o2 firmware, check it and see if any of them stand out as the one you had firstly.
why do you need o2 firmware specifically ??
you can sell your phone with JPY 2.2.1 stock and no one would be the wiser .

jpy? so is that a firmware you could actually get on a device brought in uk? which specific download should I choose? Once downloaded and flashed if I connect to kies will it be able to do future updates?
EDIT woohoo I did as you said and used UK JPY found here
http://www.multiupload.com/PZNPALHVDW
and its now being picked up in kies saying latest firmware installed. Excellent now I can sell it without worrying.
bit sad it was definately the best phone ive owned and there still doesnt seem to be much out there that can push it to its limits (let alone the s2) still the extra screen size and better pixel layout are definately worth the upgrade.
Thanks everyone for your help.
If thats not it i uploaded O2 JPY within the last month linked in two posts .Dont know where though .Its probably mine on Sammy anyway .
Flashed direct as PDA via Odin . If problems after with modem . Unzip file extract modem flash file again as PDA and also the modem file is what i did .

My gnote issue

hey all,
i'm new to the forums here at xda-developers but i'm in ire need of some advice/help if you would not mind sharing your experience.
Okay the issue.
I have a galaxy note gt-n7000, it will not update via kies or via the phone itself at all for months. I'm from England and i purchased it on contract from carphone warehouse; some vital information about the phone are as follows:
Android version - 2.3.6
Baseband version - N7000XXLPT
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.7-N7000LA6-CL907341 [email protected] #2
Build bumber - GINGERBREAD.XXLA6
CSC - XEU
I have tried several things to fix this such as:
Factory restting everything - the sd card, the phone... No eval.
Attempting to change the CSC to a different one from XEU
Waiting to see if any more updates are as followed
reconnecting/rebotting my phone to ensure the connection is okay to Kies
Another issue of this phone is that it will not download anything from the website such as bus timetable PPFs in which it used to be beforehand, i am completely stumped by it
thanks for your time to read this and hopefully help,
Nozz.
P.S I don't really want to root my phone cause my warranty will void otherwise.
have you updated the kies? use latest version of kies to update it should work.
Since youre factory resetting, i presume you dont care for any data loss... You can go to recovery (turn off phone then press and hold volume up+power+home until the phone turns on) then do the factory reset there... (this is not touch interface.. You have to use volume buttons and the power button to select your option):highfive:
I entrust you to do this since you said youre running 2.3.6 but DONT DO THIS if you manage to get to Ice cream sandwich!!! We can never stop reminding people of this... DONT EVEN DARE to factory reset under settings on a stock Ice cream sandwich n7000..

Yeah, according to Kies it is the updated version, and i also updated a galaxy s2 with it to ICS the other day...
Will going into recovery mode then factory resetting it work ?
thanks for your help,
Nozz.
Just factory resetted it, and once again it is coming up with it saying it is not possible tp update Via Kies :/
And Kies is fully updated
Also another thing i forgot to mention, the phone wants an update has it says new firmware is available through downloading from the phone then installing that way, however when i try this, it all goes okay, reboots, comes up with the little andriod symbol then it stops at roughly 20%, reboots and says it was unsuccessful, try updating via samsung kies.
thinking of just getting rid of it, but it's a contract.... Sigh.
nozz.
somebody made a program that you can use instead of KIES, it is called Checkfus.
google for it, or search the forum, i am sure you will find it.

Hi there,
I would suggest not to update more on Kies as Kies sometimes KIES(OTA OR the PC one) is quite not more reliable sometimes, sometimes you can upgrade sometimes you can't.(Just like a woman on her monthly periods )
Anyway, I would you recommend by just flashing it thru PC ODIN. Download your stock ICS software from this page -> www.samfirmware.com and look for the firmware on your region. Flash it and you should be good to go.
:good:
i'm quite new to flashing phones, i've flashed computer motherboard bios, but i can get inside them and change the mobo if it goes wrong however i cannot do that with a phone :/
Which one is safe for my phone, considering it's current build etc?
Advice would be appreciated.
I can't seem to find firmware that is suited for my PDA, CSC and Phone codes... Or will any UK firmware work?
Nozz.

Here you go bud ->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 (courtesy of Doc Ketan, of course)
If you narrow down a bit, there's a firmware for UK there(Carphone Warehouse to be exact)
According to CheckFus there is no such ICS update for my specific phone, aka pda/phone/csc.... hmm... and also i can't seem to find any roms for my specific phone either...
I really don't know what to do now
Could someone take alook at my numbers in my first post and help me, as i'm pretty much at the end of my tether with this phone
i'll relist my phones information:
PDA: N7000XXLA6
PHONE: N7000XXLPT
CSC: N7000XEULP4
Build Info: Friday, January 20 05:38:08 KST 2012
That build info looks slightly dodgy considering this is supposed to uk phone, and i'm pretty sure UK gingerbread didn't come out at that point... hmmm.. got me thinking.
anyhow
Thanks,
Nozz
