Not sure if they sold this phone in Europe, but if you buy either the 860 or 862 you should be good. They have GSM radios that should work fine with a SIM unlock. If it's not unlocked you can buy an unlock code from unlock4moto.com for $6 and if the device isn't past the point of being permanently locked it will unlock.
Buy an droid 4 you can have 4.3 running on it, but with D3 you can swap the battery. Droid 4 has the 900mhz on 3g too so it has a greater compatibility. I bought my droid 4 cheaper than droid 3 (120 $ on ebay) and it's unlocked.

Hello, guys. I just came to USA and I do not how everything works here. I want Droid 3 as you can already know because I am posting here) I can buy this perfect device only locked by verizon but I do not like their plans so I think that AT&T will be good for me.
So as I understand after reading this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172521&page=1 the necessary steps are the following:
1) I buy the phone for example here Droid 3 by motorola .
2) I buy the unlocking code at ebay (the seller is freedomobile).
3) I unlock the device using above code.
4) I buy the AT&T SIM-card.
5) I activate the SIM-card
and everything should work. Is everything correct?
And one more question: will I have the warranty?
How about buying already unlocked phone here http://negrielectronics.com/motorola-xt860-droid-3-850-1900-3g-unlocked.html
Thank you very much.

I am not going to preach about searching or anything because it's quite lame IMO.
However, to answer your question, it won't work. From what I understand, Verizon was able to convince/modify/something with Motorola to prevent GSM networks inside the US to use the phone. I am not sure of the technical reasons specifically, but as far as I know, an unlocked Droid 3 just will not work on US GSM networks.
Besides, I strongly discourage against AT&T. There are reasons why people are willing to pay slightly more for Verizon.
Verizon tinkered with the baseband firmware which blocks all US GSM networks. We cannot replace the firmware unless we have an unlocked bootloader.

The D3 can be flashed to Cricket. The Droid 2 Global, which is also a global, can be flashed to Cricket. The thing is that VZW doesn't want their global phones being used on GSM bands (AT&T/T-Mobile) in the US.

So, the only way to buy the phone in USA is choosing the operator at first and then choosing the phone on the web site of the operator, correct?
And how about already unlocked devices by negrielectronics?
If you can get the proper unlocking code it WILL work on ATT. I know TeamBlackHat(which has a good reputation) sells these codes and has successfully done it.

They are pretty reputable. They sent Jon over at technobuffalo a htc sensation that was unlocked and could be used on att. I would say go for it.

XT860 (Bell and OEM) may work, read few success stories about it.
The regular XT862, which is verizon's version will not work definitely.
I'm not from the US though, but I visit the states every summer and I know that my upcoming XT862 will not work while i'm visiting

Have similar question with regards to this problem.
I am using a Droid3 XT862 that has been unlocked, and I'm living in Jamaica.
However for some reason I cannot get the phone to work with one of my local networks. I can get it to work with two of them, namely Digicel and Claro. But I cant get it to work with Lime for some strange reason. I know the phone is capable to operate on the bandwidths which are listed below:
Digicel: GSM 900/1800 MHZ, UMTS 900 MHZ
Lime: GSM 850/1900 MHZ, UMTS 850/1900 MHZ
Claro: GSM 850/1900 MHZ, UMTS 850/1900 MHZ
All of which can work on the phone, and I also believe I shouldn't have the problem because I'm not using a US network where use is firmware locked. But my network of choice is Lime who is the only network that offers 3g locally. When I put in my lime sim it says "invalid sim card/no sim" and when I try to register to the lime network the phone says "Your sim card does not allow a connection to this network".
Any suggestions/solutions?

(@wjones) Just head over Droid 2 Global section.
But before you do so, let me give you the bad news. TBH solution will not work on D3, neitheron does on newer D2G/DPro firmwares. It is all described there by CellZealot (TBH) in the D2G thread. Sorry, if you want D3 on AT&T, go buy Bell XT860.

I suggest getting the unlock codes from Verizon first. Some unlock code have been changed by Verizon and cannot be obtained by third-party vendors.

I got my code on Ebay from UnlockFusion, it's only 4.05USD now and worked flawlessly.
Then use instructions and files in this; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406812 to use the XT883 (chinese D3) radio and build.prop to unlock US GSM carriers.

I use unlocked D3 but this device is 512MB ram also there is no official ICS(no flash reader, no camcorder). If I can use D4 on gsm network, I'll upgrade!
from my DROID3 using xda app-developers app
Yes you can, but currently only with the leaked ICS firmwares. The stock gingerbread firmware does not allow it. Supposedly the official ICS firmware is due in Q3 2012
I made a thread here with instructions on how to do it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766479
Will this work if the droid 4 has a bad ESN?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Should be, the esn is usually used to activate cdma, for gsm you only have to activate a sim card and put it in...

Almost the answer I was looking for.
So could someone confirm this:
Bad esn doesn't affect calling via a SIMcard?
I know it's a very old thread, but worth trying..
ESN's and IMEI numbers are used for GSM phones(AT&T, T-Mobile and now Verizon also). MEID numbers are used with CDMA phones(Verizon,Sprint) and just because the phone has ics or jb doesn't mean it's unlocked. You still have to install a different sim card and put in an unlock code which you can get from Verizon if you are with them or pay for it online somewhere. Once the new sim card is installed into phone and the unlock code is entered, the phone will state that your device has been unlocked. Unlocking phones is mainly for overseas use outside of the US. I have much experience with this as I served in the U.S. military for 10 years and I took my old phone over with me. Upon arrival in the new country, you set up cell service with a GSM provider, install their sim card and viola! Hope I could clear this up for you guys! Not trying to sound mean, just informative.
EDIT: Bad ESN's or MEID's can be a bad thing but some can be changed or flashed over with new one's from third party service providers like PagePlus Cellular, etc.

Hey guys, just curious, as I'm having withdrawals from actually having a decent phone that doesn't make me want to use it as a hockey puck.
I have access to a tmobile Samsung galaxy s2, for a cheap price, if I were to unlock it, would it be capable of running on the Verizon network? Obviously with owning a d3, I have a sim card, would it work? Also, again out of pure curiosity, would an unlocked att phone work on our network?

It all depends on if the phones are capable of running on CDMA/EVDO. Do some research on the phones sorry I'm not much help
Sent from my DROID3 using xda app-developers app
Google (your phone model) specs and see if the radio bands are ones that are supported by verizon.
Sent from my XT860 using xda premium
No the SGS2 uses GSM and Verizon uses CDMA. Maybe someone would trade you phones?
Even if the phone has CDMA hardware like any Sprint phone, Verizon will only allow devices on their network if they are authorized for use on Verizon.
Hi guys I have one D3.I want to know can this phone unlocked and used in another country
Maybe so if it will unlock. Flash the 883 radio and build.prop and try.

yes it will mine did
Can be 100% is this will work after flash the radio becouse I buy this phone from ebay and I want to be sure
Will I re read what you put and see that you wont to use it over seas.
but I do know it works in the usa if you do it. The unlock codes are $6 usa bucks so it does not cost that much to try it any way.
if it don't work then flash the old radio back its that easy
Sent from my XT883 using xda app-developers app
AFAIK, a bad ESN is carrier specific. Meaning it's most likely ONLY blocked on VZW. You could almost certainly have it flashed to another CDMA network, or use it on GSM without issues.
The problem lies in that Verizon can hard SIM lock the phone so it only accepts Vodaphone SIMs. But that is rare. Get an unlock code from unlock4moto.com and it will be your best bet.
Sent from my XT883 using xda app-developers app
Best unlock
search this on ebay
"Unlock Code for Verizon™ Motorola™ DROID 3 XT862 MB870"
This is what I've used for my last 5 droid 3's. Super fast. Just make sure its not "subsidy locked" which happened to one of my droid 3's, it happens after too many wrong codes entered, and at this point there's no way to bypass it. Sorry I'm a new member so I can't post links.
