Night build updates - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First, would like to thank the mods/developers for all the hard work, I am loving my Kindle Fire HD because of your hard work.
Secondly, I did search the forums about this question. My guess is this has been answered but I just didn't use the right keywords to find what I am looking for.
I am currently using Cm-10.1-20130726 and it is working perfectly, however what I wanted to do is update to the latest build. In order to ensure I do not brick my kindle or make any errors, just wanted to verify the steps that I need to do to complete this.
I have downloaded hashcodes 08/12 BETA CM10.1 + 3.0.50+ KERNEL,
Do i need to dl gapps or is my current install fine, if so can you please provide a link, searching provided a lot of results.
Then, what steps exactly do I need to do to update, i do not want to lose my current apps so i prefer not to guess on on these steps. Thank you so much for your help.

Generally if you upgrading between diff versions of the same rom, there is no need erase data, however if hashcode advised to flash it and wipe data, then you should.... I don't think I answered your question for this ver, but I flashed his updates without wiping, but am now on kinology, as my parents wouldn't let me use the credit card on the play store (and I don't want to crack apps, even if I bought them at the Amazon store)

Thanks, now to figure out how to boot into twrp again. Gapps updates, are not needed?

Hold the vol up button while the Orange kindle fire logo appears, you can flash the updated gaaps if you choose....just flash the rom (do nothing else) but if this new ver has an updated kernel, wipe dalvik cache, and cache partitions before flashing.

Just reboot, any wiping would have to be done before the rom... doesn't matter, good luck man

Did you install the stack manually or did you use FireFlash for TWRP?

FireFlash isn't at fault. I did the same thing when I installed TWRP on my Kindle. The image you're seeing is an actual Google Nexus boot animation, but why it's on an Amazon device, no idea. I do know it froze.
No, fireflash is fine, i just didnt know if you checked the tickbox to install the stack. The google animation? I'm assuming he's using the same tabletUI rom as me, it comes with that animation, if so, the reason its not booting is because the 1.5 kernel it comes with doesn't work with your Kindle, all kindles hardware is different so you need to go to the tabletui rom thread and download the updated version to flash or the 1.2Ghz kernel instead.
Hope this helps.

Katalystik can you put a link in for the tabletui rom thread? thanks!
So the guy who has the kindle fire 7 second gen gave it back to me cause he bought a fast boot cable. I went to flash a rom and now it wont flash anything it just says failed in red. Is there something wrong with twrp?
OK the tablet ui link is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265465
As to the part about twrp being messed up that is doubtful, I'd guess the zip your flashing was a bad download or corrupt, that usually what comes to mind in these situations, I suggest checking the md5sum with esfile explorer before you try to flash the zip, though I am not sure what you are flashing because I don't know if u found the tablet ui before I posted it or if your flashing something else, and I think jester didn't include the md5sum for his ROM... Also if u are flashing from stock to a cm build u need to wipe system, and do a factory reset and I always clear my dalvik cache and cache before I reboot into the new os.

[Q] Rooting and flashing questions

As of last night I had my KFHD7 setup just the way I wanted with root, Kinology and my customizing 99% done. Well, I decided to get cute and mess around with how the status bar looked and <wham>, I lost my entire user interface. I ended up flashing stock 7.3.1 back on using TWRP and all looked well because I still had the root and could just put Kinology right back on. I wasn't aware there was an update of 7.4.1 available, which Amazon snuck in my device immediately <thanks?>. So now I'm back to a plain ol' out of the box KFHD7 without root, TWRP and running 7.4.1 stock rom.
My question is, now that it's on 7.4.1, what is the proper method to get back where I was before with root, TWRP and Kinology? These are the 3 guides I followed before:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117&highlight=root+kfhd7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163135
Are they still safe to follow for 7.4.1? Thanks for any help.

The second one actually contains a procedure that goes through everything you need. In a nutshell, first root, then install freedomboot/TWRP, then install Kinology.

I tried your method and get stuck when trying to go to recovery. so i forced recovery with fire flash and chose reboot in recovery. then it showed a yellow triangle with an explanation point giving me two options reboot or reset. I rebooted and didnt try it again. What do I do now? I was attempting to flash Hashcode's ROM but it won't even go into recovery with twrp also the freedom boot didn't occur. If anyone can identify or solve the problem that would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't follow the guide correctly. If you at least did something right, you should've put freedom-boot in the boot partition, and TWRP in the recovery partition. That has to be flashed at the same time, and reboot into recovery. Custom ROMs are flashed afterward, not in FireFlash. What you're stuck at is the stock recovery. My thread in signature, #7, then #6.

CWM removal

i searched the forums for help but nothing has helped so far, so heres my problem:
i installed CM10.1 to my internal memory last week. i installed it with CWM, during the installation i installed the TWRP package hoping that it would install TWRP (i read somewhere that it should be installed during the process). once i installed CM10.1 i rebooted thinking it would boot into TWRP but........ nope! i installed TWRP from Gplay. the interface is epic and it seems like it might be a great app but when i select the reboot to recovery my HD+ just reboots back into CM10.1
im still able to boot into CWM recovery so im sure thats the problem so i need help removing CWM. there is no app installed and i cant seem to find the folder (at least not with file expert. i was hoping to be able to install the latest rom using TWRP but its proving to be harder than i thought. thanks in advance guys, any and all help is appreciated!
CWM is not part of the CM10.1 ROM. It is totally separate. It is not an app. It is installed in its own location in internal memory. To get to either CWM or TWRP recovery, you need to activate the reboot option in CM10.1. Go to settings, about tablet and tap the build number several times. That will activate developers options. Then go to developer options and put a check in advanced reboot. Then on power off menu you should be able to boot to recovery. If it is CWM in recovery, just flash the TWRP install zip from verygreen's emmc thread and it will be TWRP from then on, replacing CWM.

[Q] Home button doesn't work

I'm using Amazon Tate CM11 on my Kindle Fire and everything was going smoothly. After a few of the official updates, I don't recall which one, my home button stopped working. Everything else works fine. When I downgrade to previous updates, nothing gets fixed. Thank you for the help.
Did you try wiping cache and dalvik cache from twrp after downgrading?
Sent from my Amazon Tate using Tapatalk
Hashcode did say this next update would not be for the faint of heart. Might want to jump back an update or two.

Where did Hashcode say that? And I'm sorry, it's been a long time, I rooted and flashed using a youtube video back in March, so I'm not famiiar with anything. How do I do the fix?
Reboot into recovery and hit wipe, choose advanced, only check cache and dalvik cache.if you want a easy way to get into recovery you can use "adb reboot recovery" or enable developer menu and check off advanced reboot and your reboot menu in cm will give you the option. There's always the normal waybas well, hood volume up as soon as you turn the kindle on until you see the twrp logo. I think it is volume up, might be volume down, I don't do it that way much so it is hard to remember.
Also to refer to the question about hashcode, he said it on the cm 11 thread as a heads up on the latest nightly that he would be rolling out.

It was the volume up button. I followed your instructions, didn't work. Also, the top right menu doesn't pull down, which was a problem I had from the start of the home button problem as well.
I hate to reccomend a factory reset but you might want to go into twrp and factory reset it under wipe. Just backup any appdata for apps you want to save the data off of like games, I think you can do it with titanium backup, I just do it manually myself.

FIXED. I did a complete factory reset, I installed Flash Fire and reset through there. For some reason, THAT worked. Reboot into recovery after flash fire wipe and twrp did the rest. TWRP alone couldn't do it, I guess.

Slow system on CM 11 M12

So today I installed M12 with clean install. At first, everything was veery slow, like it needed 10-15 sec for one operation. Apps were opening to black screen or opening with huge delay. After few hours, it got better, UI is responsive, but apps are still opening slowly(no black screens through). How can I help it?

The only partitions that should ever need to be wiped are /cache, /data, and /system. Wiping some partitions other than these 3 (e.g., /rom and /factory) will brick your Nook.

I'm having the same issue as the OP. Followed these instructions to upgrade to CM11 M12 :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-hd/general/how-to-updating-hd-hd-internal-emmc-to-t2863171
And now stuck with a very sluggish tablet - any apps opening are really slow - has been like this for a couple of days now. Battery life also seems to be worse.
You suggested a factory reset - do you mean the factory reset option in the Backup and reset menu?
Almost tempted to downgrade back to 10.2.1 - it had its faults, but was still better than this.... but i can't find any info on how i'd do that - can i use my current version of CWM Recovery (had to update it to do the upgrade) and just flash the old version of CM10 and the relevant Gapps?

I performed the wipe data & factory reset as instructed after updating CWM recovery and before installing CM11 and the Gapps file - is that the option i could try now? That wont wipe anything "important"?
Also, if i was to downgrade to 10.2.1 could i do it by just copying the files to the internal or external memory and doing the following? :
downgrade the CWM recovery, reboot into the new recovery, wipe data/factory reset and then install chosen CM10 and Gapps?

Also, if i was to downgrade to 10.2.1 could i do it by just copying the files to the internal or external memory and doing the following? :
downgrade the CWM recovery, reboot into the new recovery, wipe data/factory reset and then install chosen CM10 and Gapps?
Thanks for the help!

If you only factory reset (in other words don't wipe /system) then your ROM stays and should still run, just settings and installed apps removed.
And yes on procedure to downgrade.

Yes I did it from backup and reset menu, but I think it did reset with cwm anyway, so it doesn't matter.

Just to share my observations. In general the performance is very good. Currently I'm on M12.
I'm mostly using it to read PDFs.
In the past I observed, that after a while of operation it gets slow and even the touchscreen is not responding properly. After a reboot everything is fine again. I couldn't observe it anymore lately, but not sure whether this is because of I did a reboot (before it becomes necessary).
A question because I first read the thread title wrong: will there be a CM12 for this device? Or other way around, is someone (leapinlar?) working on a port lollipop to nook or is intended to do so?
