[Q] Backing up text message in WP8 and transferring to Android - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the subject states, is there a way to back up text message from my WP8 device and restoring them to an Android phone? Perhaps by saving to SIM or in xml form...
I have one text message needed as a means of validation for a contest, but I'm switching phones and am planning to sell my Lumia 520. Waiting until the contest is over would take 1 month, so I'd rather not do that.

Well, the built-in SMS Backup feature stores them to "the cloud" somewhere; apparently it's possible to find them if you dig around in the Microsoft account that you have linked to the phone. I recommend that you try some online searches. I've never actually done it, though, and as for restoring the back up... that's not something I can really help you with, I don't do Android.

I will look into it to see if it can sync if I set up a Microsoft Exchange account in Android, but AFAIK the cloud backup can only be synced with another Windows device.

Internet Pictures Blocked

Ok this may be a dumb question, and quite possibly Im missing something simple.
I have my email set to download the full message I'm on an unlimited data plan and mainly use the data plan for my email. so i'm not worried about data usage.
however my onto my question, when you open an email, a yellow bar at the top of the screen says "Internet Pictures Blocked"
I know its simple, and all you need to do is click the yellow bar, you read the message that says "To protect your privacy, pictures from the Internet are not automatically downloaded"
Bellow the message you click "download Internet pictures"
Easy, Simple, Almost hassle free, I know all that.
But not quiet Hassle free. and it had slowly became the thing that bugs me most about opening my mail.
Again I know Im probably missing something that is so simple most people don't even need to ask how to do it. But is there a way to make it download the full email including the images.
Iv'e had the x1 since it came out here in Britain, and maybe I should have asked earlier rather than, let it bug me every day. But I haven't because it felt like it was a setting i have not configured correctly. and i was just being stupid wasting peoples time with such a simple question.
But I put my hands in the air, I cant find it , I don't know how to do it. I give up. Can someone tell me what I'm not doing correct, and put me out of my misery lol
Thanks in advance for any help

That's a standard feature on most email clients these days.
It's there so that spammers can't hide your email address in an image request - basically the images generated by a script that confirms that your email address is valid.
When your email address is confirmed as valid its more valuable to sell on to spammers as a 'confirmed active' address.
You should only ever allow images to be downloaded from email that you are expectingand where you know the sender - therefore in any email the images will be blocked initially.
Full blown email clients may have a 'white list' for senders addresses that you will automatically allow images from, but not Pocket Outlook unfortunately.
Hope this helps,
FM
Is there a way to bypass that?
My x1 reads the email from 1 folder in my email account. spam, junk and items i don't require to check when out and about, are in other folders of the account and i check those when i get home.
Its just the emails that make it to this approved folder i check on the phone. and it would be good for the full email an images to be downloaded.
However i presume from what you are saying, that even tho i have taken precautions to filter and separate non important emails, that it is still in my best interest and for my own protection that the x1 does not download the images with the rest of the email. and that there is no actual way to change this setting
Thanks for your quick reply

I would like to download the images automatically, too.
No one with an idea how to fix that?

[Q] HD7 can't export contacts to SIM?

Hi all. Got my HD7 few days ago and can't find out how to export my phone contact list to SIM. There is the import function (to import contacts from SIM to phone) but is there the export function?
Does not exist. There was a nice Sim Manager in previous versions of Windows Mobile but it's missing in WP7. Even my iPhone had this feature missing and yes.. finally "there's an app for that" in the iPhone world.
Hopefully it's also an app for this Phone OS that will be coming. Some times (not all the time) I don't want to carry around my HTC HD7. Being able to export contacts to Sim allows for another phone to be used and still have all your phone# you might need.
or you could store your new contacts as windows live contacts so they are stored online and they can be imported to any WP7 phone. not perfect but one solution.
Yes... that would work but some of us have an older phone (candy bar style) as a back up or for travel (not use carrier data plan abroad). Not being able to transfer all contacts to sim would be an issue. I sure hope all the good things about previous Windows Mobile are brought over to WP7. Even some nice features of the iPhone should be implemented too.
I will say though... going to the cloud for data is fantastic. The idea would be to have access to all your info no matter what phone/internet device/appliance is being used. As I understand it Microsoft is really pushing for Laptop/Phone/TV as the interface. Just image being able to logon to any internet enabled device in the world, make a phone call, send email, Instant Messege or SMS, watch movie/TV all from your "Live" account. One day it will be possible !
I honestly could care less about this function unless they improve sim cards.
1. Names tend to get chopped off
2. Different "contact" for every number each contact has (1 for mobile, 1 for home, etc)
3. No other info makes it across (address, email addy, etc), at least on t-mobile
Now, if they improved the sim cards to actually store the contact the way its stored on the phone, then I could see it as a valuable thing.
HD7 cant export contacts to SIM
Hi
Leading on from earlier reply to this thread. What are the steps to
or you could store your new contacts as windows live contacts so they are stored online and they can be imported to any WP7 phone. not perfect but one solution.
Can you export the contacts on the phone to windows live account in one go or is it a case of manually creating a contact in windows live for each entry in the phone book on the phone
My contacts in my phone book have lot of detail in them. Emails, addresses, multiple phone numbers, notes, etc so having to manually type all of these into a windows live contact is going to take forever and is real pain
Also, what are the steps/instructions to follow to then import these contacts from windows live to windows 7 phone
Thanks
o wow im so disapointed that i cant back up my contacts to my sim card i realy hope a talented dev will address this issue with some new application
im t-mobel us!
i did store my contacts online but thats not going to fix the probums im about to face when the next update hits
we realy need a fix for this
Export contacts to sim is a must!!!!
Sync WP7 HD7 contacts
I have added new contacts directly in the phone but they were not sync to windows live. How can I sync manually? or How can I force the sync of all my contacts? Can I perform a general contact backup?
Thanks!
boooooooooooooooo
I'm a programmer and I'll have a go at implementing something. It may be the case, however, that it's just not possible to gain access to the sim from the WP7 API.
The reason I need to do this, is that I don't want to take my expencive WP7 phone hillwalking (can be very wet where I live) so I bought a cheap and cheerful candy bar phone for outdoor activities. I'd rather not type in a heap of contacts though if I can help it.

After some digging around I see that it's not possible. The WP7 API doesn't provide any access to the sim card. You can but a sim card writer very cheaply though. Maybe one of those can integrate with Windows Live contacts. Probably not.

If you've set up a windows live account, and have it on the phone as well, contacts and calendar are automatically backed up to windows live every time it syncs... go to the email settings and make sure the windows live account is scheduled to sync and not set to manual sync.
I flash my phone all the time and windows live always syncs my phone contacts and calendar back without loosing anything.

[Q] How to import contacts, sms with no cloud

Im desperate, i already spent two days to find a way how to import contacts to my lumia 520 with WP8 without using any cloud service like live, hotmail, google, etc. I had a diamond 2 with WM 6.5. I got my screen broken, only what i was able to do - syncing contacts with my computer. Now i have all the contacts in outlook, but i find no way how to import contacts to WP8 with no cloud. Pls. help. If there is a way how to import sms - ill be most happy man on that month
If you have WM 6.5 you can save/export contacts to vCard (*.vcf format) and copy to SD card. Next, you have to install Transfer my data and via this app you can import contacts from SD card.
With this aplication you can too transfer your contacts via bluetooth from your old phone.

I have no access to my old phone anymore. With broken display i have only outlook to be used as a source. Anyway, Transfer My Data app is working with bluetooth, no possibility to access SD card, which is in my case not a solution. Thanks for you effort.

Ok, here is the idea - is it possible to save VCF file to SD card on my laptop and use the laptop as source "mobile phone" via the application? On my laptop i have W7.
Im really getting angry on Microsoft. They always have to screw it up - they are so desperate for our private data.

Export your contacts from Outlook as a CSV. Then you can use Yahoo or Hotmail to import the CSV file. If it has the option to select CSV from Outlook make sure to use that option. It makes a difference if they specify. Whichever account you use you may want to clean your contact list because they will all be mixed in together. What I did was created a second Hotmail account and used that as my WP8 ID and for all of my MS Live account access. Imported my CSV file to that Hotmail account, then setup that Hotmail account on the phone contact list and everything imported in a few minutes. Hope it works for you as well as for me. I really prefer to use ATT address book but it wont work on my unlocked unbraded 520. If you can get ATT address book to work then that is by far an easier way. Login to https://addressbook.att.net/ and setup your account. I'm making the assumption that you have ATT as your provider. Once logged in and setup, import the CSV file there. Then open ATT address book app on your phone. Also set it up as your contact list in settings.
One other possible option: WP can import contacts from the SIM. SIM cards tend to only be able to store a really small number of contacts at once, so it may take several rounds of storing and importing, but it's a think you could try. If your old phone isn't currently usable for this, you could try having it done at a carrier store; they usually have the tools.
By the way, if you're so paranoid about privacy that you don't want MS to even know who is in your contacts list and/or you don't trust their privacy policies, I'm not sure that any modern smartphone is really going to work for you. A completely rooted Android phone with a modified, custom-built ROM, perhaps? All the major smartphone OS vendors use "cloud" synching for things like contacts.
Thanks for help
all of you guys. At the end i spent yesterday 3 hours to manually do that. I export all the contacts and sent them as vcf. Then i received e-mail to my Lumia 520, and one after one - it takes 4 clicks for one contact - added to my contact list. I had like 580 contacts - at least, after few years i delete some of them
Once again - BIG THANKS for your effort!!
Now the second part of the question - as im going to order new digitizer for my loved diamond 2 - how to export/import sms from WM6.5 to WP8 with no cloud?

[Q] How to backup contact on iPhone & restore on HTC One?

Hello guys,
I have a quick question as stated on the title. My younger brother is trading in his iPhone and switching to HTC One.
I haven't touched any iOS devices (or having in hands) for a while so I don't know how to test the instruction given on internet, so I am asking for real experts on our forum. Any advises would be appreciated.

When I switched from an iPhone to an Android, I went into my contacts and sync'd them with my main Google account (Don't remember how, but I do remember it was very easy). Then when I got my Android, when I signed in with my main gmail account for the first time, all my contacts were there (even the pics I had taken and assigned to my iPhone account).
I was recently (6 months ago) "between Androids" and had to use my wife's old iPhone 3G for about a week... I set the contacts to sync with Google and they were all imported in to my iPhone.

I also used Sync Manager to move from an iPhone 4 to the One. It moved all of my contacts, email, and SMS. The only thing it didn't move automatically were the Notes, so if you have any of those, make sure you copy them manually.
If you are on a Mac, you can sync your iPhone via iTunes to the standard Mac address book, called Contacts. Select all (command-A) and right click on any highlighted item and Export to vCard..
Create a Google account if you don't already have one, and open Gmail. Go to contacts, then import from vCard. Select the vCard and all your contacts will now be in your Google/Gmail account.
During the initial setup, Android will ask for your Google account and automatically sync your contacts.
I'm sure you can follow the same general principle on Windows with Outlook or whatever they use these days to accomplish the same thing..
When it comes to backup iPhone data, most of you would think of iTunes. But sometimes iTunes may refuse to work or you just don't have a computer at hand when you need to backup iPhone urgently. Apparently, in these cases, you can't create an iPhone backup with iTunes. Now you will begin to wonder whether you can back up data of iPhone without iTunes. Indeed, there are several iTunes alternatives to backup iPhone data out there. So U can find a third party iPhone backup tool, for example, iPhone Data Recovery. This data recovery program for iPhone enables you to backup iPhone data and recover them, including photos, contacts, notes, videos, messages, bookmarks, etc. You can use it to export the data from iPhone first and back them up on your Mac or Windows system easily.

Show HTML email inline images and auto load picture attachments within email? Lumia

Hello Windows phone users,
Last year I got my ageing Dad a Lumia 620 for Fathers day, thinking the simple tiled interface would be easier for him to get to grips with.
I threw the Hotmail tile on the main screen thinking he'd have easy access to any pictures I or my sister fancied emailing to his @Live.com account. Howver this proved not to be the case, hence the title of this thread.
Two problems.
How on earth can I get this phone / app to show HTML email inline images so that the likes of Tassimo and Shell who regularly send such emails can be read correctly?
and even with non-html emails, I need the app to auto load picture attachments within email?
What solutions have you found, is there an alternative app capable of handling @Live.com accounts?
Anyone?
Well, there is an option in 8.1 to always download full messages and Internet images, in settings for the email account.
Hopefully 8.1 will be officially released soon
