UPDATE: It appears that Sprint has fixed this issue with the MJA update (Android 4.3). When you insert a non-Sprint SIM, the APN settings become editable.
Sprint has for some reason disabled the ability to add or edit the APN settings on the GS4. To get data with a non-US SIM, you need to put in that carrier's APN. On the Sprint GS4 these settings are greyed out (as of MD9 at least)
Before going any further, YOU MUST BE ROOTED. You need to edit system files to make this work, and for that you need root. You will also want to have the SIM card for that carrier in the phone, since when you add an APN it links it to that carrier's network. In other words, if you do this with the Sprint SIM, the APN you added won't show up when you put in the other carrier's SIM.
Open the file /system/build.prop in a file browser, such as ES File Explorer. This post has a more detailed explanation of opening the build.prop file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1948558
Add the following lines, then save, close, and reboot:
Code:
ril.sales_code=LOL
ro.csc.sales_code=LOL
You can also likely use one of the many build.prop editors in the Play Store.
Now you need to add the APN settings. This menu is hidden on the stock ROM, so we need to get into it a different way. If you're using Nova Launcher, you can add a shortcut to your homescreen for APN settings. The other method is a dialer code:
Open the dialer and press ##DATA# (or ##3282#)
Go to Edit, and put in your MSL (Instructions to get your MSL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271618)
Scroll down and select Others, then LTE APN Settings
You're now at a list of all your APNs. Press the menu button, then New APN, and put in the information for your carrier. You should now have data!
Sometimes, however, the phone will only use GSM/EDGE (2G) even when a WCDMA/HSPA (3G) signal is available. The trick is to force it to use WCDMA only. I had to do this on my phone, but others didn't have to, so I think it's carrier dependent. If it shows E next to the signal meter, then it's on EDGE and restricted to dialup speeds. If it shows H, H+, or 3G, then it's using WCDMA (see above screenshot).
To do this, you need access to the Testing menu. Normally you use the dialer code *#*#4636#*#* but this is disabled on the Sprint S4. If you're using Nova Launcher, add a shortcut to the Testing menu. Otherwise, use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aebeinroth.telinfo
Then go to Device information, scroll down, and change LTE/CDMA auto (PRL) to WCDMA only.
In my experience, WCDMA preferred is not enough, it will still for some reason prefer GSM/EDGE. You will need to have already put the phone in GSM/UMTS network mode first or this won't work (Settings, Connections, More networks, Mobile networks, Network mode).
When you want to go back on Sprint just change this back to LTE/CDMA auto (PRL) then change the network mode from GSM/UMTS back to LTE/CDMA.
Nice guide. Only suggestion I have is to add in the bit on how to get your MSL if a newb doesn't know how.

Hello. First of all I want to thanky you for the information in this thread.
I have a question. In LTE APN Settings I don't have nothing and when I press menu I have only the option reset to default.
The phone is unlocked and rooted. I have modified the build.prop file.
Any suggestions? Thanks and best regards.

Yes. I use the stock ROM. Can you give me a better ROM?
Thanks in advanced for your time and effort.
Hmm, I'm using stock, and the end of my build.prop is very different from yours. It should be the same since it's built into the ROM. It looks like entries might be missing from yours. Have you modified your build.prop in any other way?

Here it is. I wouldn't replace it or make changes without having a backup of your current build.prop first. You should also really make sure you're on the stock Sprint MF9 firmware. What is your build number from Settings, More, About device?
Jdq39.l720vpuamf9
I wanted to try to set this up but i have the same problem as pirvu. i am on stock rom with mf9 odexed hotspot mod (did i say that right?)
i get only the default reset option when i get to the APN screen. i have not modifed my build.prop file yet as i am being very careful before i try anything.
The phone doesn't work with the build.prop file from Ingenium13. Thanks again Ingenium.
I have flashed the phone again with the standard ROM. Attached is my build.prop file.
I didn't manage to change the apns-conf.xml file with a standard apns-conf.xml. I have used for this ApnBackup and Restore and Titanium Backup.

Just a quick question to understand apn. Since hardware is the same. Would flashing a T-Mobile rom like the Google play edition on a sprint s4 allow you to use T-Mobile network or is this a impossible theory?

No because it still keeps the sprint modem (where the lock is). But you could try odining tmobile s4 software ( it could brick your phone). Good luck.

Okay my Vivid has its bootloader unlocked and is rooted. I also have the AT&T official ICS updated installed.
Does anyone know if there is a ROM or something in the works to provide the free wifi tethering to the phone without having to pay for AT&T plan?

there you will find what your looking for
you have to sign up to see the vivid sec.
the build your looking for is the generic build ...but i think that there is a work around to get w/t working with the regular build
edit: i took this from there and here is how you do it on your rom as of now....send thanks to homeslice976 for this
Install android_wifi_tether b11 (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-t ... k&can=2&q=)
Go into settings and set your "Device Profile" to Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GSM).
Tick the box for "Routing Fix"
Start Tethering
Connect from computer
Boom - tethered
Note: You may or may not need to use access control to allow your computer.
Note 2: It's very possible that you'll run into IP conflicts with the general setup. You might have to go to Change LAN and pick a new subnet.
Note 3: Problably not a bad idea to setup encryption
Note 4: I was initially getting DNS errors - don't know if it was Routing Fix that corrected it, or using OpenDNS DNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) was what fixed it. So, if after doing everything else, if it's still not working hardcode OpenDNS servers for DNS Servers on your wireless connection
Any build should support Wifi tethering. WildChild's Illumunati Generic ROM supports it natively, but if you would like to do so manually on any build including stock, please follow these instructions:
-You will need SQLite Editor from the market, a paid app
-Go to Dialer Storage, then select telephony.db
-Select carriers, then scroll down to Numeric 310410
-Next change the value "apn" from broadband to pta

Sorry to bring this back from the dead...
I am in Canada on a Bell SIM card but running AT&T firmware (rooted stock, s-off & super CID).
This method does not work for me. Perhaps because my Bell APN info is different. Touching up my Bell APN in the manner described above removed my data access. Thankfully, its simple to put the info back into the line you edited and reboot to restore data.
Bell has WiFi hotspot free included in its rom, I just like the visual difference of the AT&T rom "4G" rather than "H+" on Bell.
I notice the Bell RUU is 30+ mb larger than the AT&T RUU. I wonder what the difference is between them to enable WiFi hotspot?
Bell RUU also removes a lot of languages for some reason. USA English is removed, and locale is set to Canada by default with no option to change it. Any idea how to change locale?

Tip:
1.) it may run down the batter the first day. this is due to ics indexing your files on your sd card. i even made it lag out with 9 gigs of music
2.) Dont run smart actions or disable data or anything for the first day running it. it needs to index.
3.) for good sound go into settings /sound /wired stereo devices / disable effects it stacks so it will sound bad with both enabled.
4.) if battery life is still bad delete all the pictures off your phone and any thing else(format sdcards). and turn off 4g global. if your phone has been running for a while use smart actions then.

That patch is a hack for the original gingerbread firmware. ICS-based stock ROMs have some level of GSM support out of the box, at least this is true for 213 and 215. Olegfusion's debloated 215 ROM also includes additional GSM enhancements such as build.prop tweaks and addition of all the necessary APNs for data.
I was just asking if anyone had tried this particular ROM on GSM yet, and if so what steps they took to make it work.

Only TW roms based on a T-Mobile rom will have the T-Mobile wifi calling. ATT ports will not have the T-Mobile wifi calling (unless of course that rom is based on the T-Mobile rom, in which case it would be a port of a port). Furthermore, no CM or AOSP based rom will have the T-Mobile wifi call. It is a T-Mobile exclusive feature baked into the stock rom.

The original post has a file that installs the AOKP files ... which has a different phone/contacts/web app that all work in tablet mode
S-Note/S-Memo are still broken and right now i think they will continue to be for a while atleast, i dont see that anyone has been able to do this yet with the ATT or International Note or anything along those lines so it may never happen.
I also tried to update to the newest TouchWiz Launcher ... Epic Fail ... it crashes every time ... will keep everyone updated.

This a touch wiz rom, but it is not the T-Mobile version of WiFi calling so when the phone tries to access Att's VoIP server the server freaks s out because this is not an Att account. To prove it have you noticed when you first open your contacts it tries to sync with your "Att" account (that you don't have.)

As the title suggests, this is a trick to write any PRL. This is confirmed working on STOCK MF9... too lazy to check MDC and MDL.
Please report back if you are successful or not on MDC/MDL.
No SPC/MSL needed
No root needed
No computer needed
No renaming to test.prl
For more info on PRLs themselves checkout this thread.
For an alternate method for GS4 PRL writing in Touchwiz check out this thread.
To write a PRL in an AOSP rom you will need a PC, DFS and the diag script found in this thread.

4. Hit the OK button when finished. PRL write menu should open and a new shortcut made on homescreen.
5. Select "Write PRL" then pick the PRL you want to write. PRLs must be on the root of your internal sdcard.
I suggest not messing with any of the other options unless you know what you're doing.

What PRL are you guys using? I'm using 56013 which is supposed to have VZW 3g roaming, but after finally getting roam control working, all I'm getting is EVDO 1x.

Let's not turn this thread into a which PRL does what thread. That's what the PRL thread linked in the OP is for. 56013 does have 3G roaming... but that doesn't mean everywhere... and using roam control doesn't always work the way the PRL was intended. The only true way to test the PRL would be to roam naturally(not forcing it) or reading the PRL in a PRL editor(ex. QPST RL Editor) to check for how your area is set up.
To write a PRL in AOSP you need a PC, DFS and a diag script to force the phone into diag mode. AOSP PRL writing is outlined in THIS THREAD'S OP and the diag script to use for the GS4 is in THIS THREAD'S OP.
I seen this in the apns menu. I wonder if the bottom option will unlock international voice

Nope. APN is entirely separate from any sort of SIM unlock. Once your SIM is unlocked through Sprint... and you use an international SIM.. the APN will toggle itself to that setting. APNs can also be viewed via the ##DATA# > Edit > More/Other > LTE APNs menu.
The only thing useful in the entire menu is the Write PRL function.
Nice to know

Will this work on an s3?
Unfortunately, I get a component unavailable (invalid) error. Double checked that there were no typos. Running 4.2.2 on stock. Any suggestions

shouldnt be much else to it. I confirmed it working with MF9.. another guy in here said it works with MDL.
I'm actually on MDC right now so let's see... yup works on stock MDC as well. Sounds like there's a typo you're missing... or you're not 100% stock. I just got the unavailable error mysel and noticed I had a space between two letter by mistake. Good luck :good:
Not sure what's going on. Tried again, no dice.
I've included a screenshot maybe I'm missing something. Thanks

working on GS4 ROMs on the GS3?
Anyone happen to try this on one of the mod'd GS4 stock ROMs on the GS3?
I'm running a CM ROM and would love to just flash a mod'd GS4 ROM on the go to be able to change PRLs without having to use desktop DFS CDMA Tool software to change PRLs.
@autoprime - any idea if this method would work on the Sprint GS3? My wife gets terrible reception at work but she's leery of me rooting her phone.

no clue but i'm going to guess no.
I'm on the stock rom Sense 6 OTA. I am unable to receive MMS using the HTC Messages app because the connection settings for MMSC does not have a value in it. I'm using 8sms (Vanilla messaging app) from the Play Store using the correct MMSC value and it works fine. Although it works, I would like to have the integration of the messaging app with Sense to work again.
I can't seem to edit the APN setting because it is grayed out under Settings > Mobile network settings > Access point names.
I have root access but S-On. Is there an Access point configuration file that I can update? Is there a way to be able to get the setting to be editable?
Below are the settings for the HTC messaging app and 8sms vanilla messaging app.

A little update on what i've tried. I tried enabling APN settings as described in
this post but after I reboot the build.prop file reverts to its original file including timestamp of the file.
I then tried editing the APN directly via apns-config.xml file under /system/etc but the file doesn't exist.
Still at a lost.

Have you tried using an app called Tweakker? That fixed an APN problem I had when I was using ViperOne.

Unfortunately the app doesn't have sprint in its list of carriers. Thanks anyway.

Try looking at the 2nd post of that thread, even though it's for Samsung devices.
EDIT:
Check this out as well.

I've tried method 1 from the first link and moving the files works but as soon as i reboot the app disappears.
Method 2 works thats why im using 8sms for now.
I havent tried method 3 yet. I was hoping someone on xda had my problem and solved it first.
The second link does nothing.

Take a look at the posts here and look for the VVM fix. That might help.

Downloaded and had a look. It flashes a kernel and replaces the existing Sprint files with possibly new/unaltered ones. Best to do a nandroid backup before flashing imo.

Good thing for nandroid backup. I flashed the file and all network was lost. Thanks for the suggestion for this file though.
