I'm giving it some serious thought. I have been trying to move away from running custom Roms and its not that easy. I've been running android since DEC 2009 and its in my skin. Very hard to break this habit! I'm thinking that the moto x just might be the phone that I won't have to mess with to be happy but I may be delusional for who knows what lurks in the long run...

Will they give us our money back if we return within 14 days? It's not very clear on the website terms and conditions. Has anyone contacted Motorola and asked?
I'm right there with you guys, I had a nexus 4 (but sold it due to weak reception and limited storage), then a s3 running cm10.1. I wanted a solid phone running aosp and I think the moto x could be that phone. Mine came today and its almost pure stock android. Only the camera is really different. My only real complaint is the lack of wireless charging.

I know what some of you mean, I'm almost sick of HAVING to root, custom ROM a phone because the offering out of box is still awful, whether it's the skin, bloatware, etc.
There's still so much benefit to rooting that honestly, I feel Android is useless without it still.

Yes I called. You have 14 days starting the day you receive your phone. If you bought the card from att for the moto maker than you can return to store. If you customized without that then you ship back to moto for full refund - 36 dollar restocking

Wow and here I am thinking I was the only one on XDA of all places that was getting tired of custom ROMing. It's not so much a hassle for me as much as I feel that there are some drawbacks to using a custom ROM. I feel that any slowdowns or battery drains, which are getting fairly often with my Nexus 4 on 4.3, are due to CM10.2/PA/AOKP's code and not present with stock ROMs.
As much as the customization is important too, I'd almost give it all up if I can get a smooth, clean, and battery friendly ROM out of the box as intended by Google/Motorola. Tired of all the variabilities. As such, the Moto X is attractive.

Sold my N4 and got the X a few days ago. Couldn't be happier.
If Google had a restore system that worked like Apple's does I wouldn't even root.
I was thinking about picking up a $199 Nexus 4 or paying the off-contract price to get the custom Moto X.
The more I think about it, while the Nexus 4 is a fabulous deal, it's just cheaper really. No LTE isn't good for me where I am since LTE is very fast in St. Louis. The hardware customization cannot be understated.
The other features such as Active Notifications and Touchless Control, which won me over originally on my X decision, don't exist the same way on the N4. So it's still a big difference to me. If I already had the N4, it would be tougher to sell now since the resale value instantly just dropped. But I am still thinking Moto X.
I am torn between purchasing the Moto X off contract (for 550) or buying the N4 at the price it is now but then possibly regretting it since google is putting it at this price because of a new Nexus along the way some time in October, which I am assuming it will be somewhere in the 350 range like the N4 was.
But then again if the Nexus 5 (or whatever it is called) is still cheaper than the Moto X it makes it kind of easier to decide still on what to get.
Doesn't the N4 not have LTE? Seems like that would be a big reason to get the moto X.
I haven't received my X yet, but I think the only thing that is going to bother me is not being able to wifi tether to my laptop. Hopefully this is something that can be enabled if someone just figures out a root exploit (as opposed to a bootloader expoit and a custom rom).
I had the nexus 4 and it was stolen. I just got the Moto X and it is great. However I miss the nexus 4. I loved slim bean on it. All the custom features along with root really made that phone the best phone available especially for the price. Don't get me wrong the active notifications and always on capability of the moto x are awesome but not for almost 600 dollars. I'm going to return it in 14 days and hopefully the nexus 5 will be out. If not I will just get a cheap nexus 4 on craigslist until it does. Since Google just cut the price I should be able to find one for around 100 bucks. That is a ridiculous price for such a great phone. I will miss the always on Google now functionality but will live without it. Who knows maybe the nexus 5 will have it......

Ok so got the moto x and loving it so far. I have only had it since 1030 cst but this is great. I don't have to worry about root or roms and the phone just works. It is very snappy and love the screen colors. Once again something I had to customize on my n4. Anyway great phone so far.

I tried to like this phone, but I have come to the realization that I just don't. No bumper, charging mat or screen protector has helped me enjoy it anymore. Getting this device to work correctly on at&t is a nightmare, I'm having connection issues to this day. No apn, imei or change of plan has fixed it. The phone has light bleed, which is frustrating to look at and buzzing which is annoying to hear. Rma is not my thing it takes to long and I've heard to many horror stories.
Stock android is nice though I feel the experience of say the note 2 is better. I'd rather have a skinned version of android and then when I am looking for a vanilla look and feel I can ROM aokp or cm 10 which seems to be the better version of stock android anyway with added utility and customizations.
Think my run with at&t and my nexus is over. Time for a new beginning with Verizon LTE which is available 100% in my area where at&t is not and I think I'm going with a droid DNA.

Good choice man! this device is not for everyone :good:
As for me AT&T works fine in my area, never had any problems. Had a few friends not getting signal earlier with their sprint iphones and I let them use mine to make a call :silly:
Hey man, it's your choice! Pure capitalistic decision here. You are not satisfied with the device, which you have every right to feel that way. It doesn't fit your needs and you like the Note 2. You don't need some AOSP zealots approval to move on. I hate AT&T personally. They treat you like crap, and though they are the No.2 carrier, with GSM, I wouldn't go back to them for all the tea in China. If I was a high roller, I might consider Verizon as they hands down have the best coverage in the USA. Their 3g is slower than my T-Mobile... and even sometimes their LTE, but good luck getting ANY 3g coverage in upstate NY (aunt lives there) on T-Mobile outside Rochester proper. If you would be served better with a Verizon Note 2, go there brother and be happy with your purchase! I personally don't want to go back to touchwiz (been AOSP too long), but the phone is awesome! Has a beautiful screen, expandable storage, great processor, 2nd best Android battery life (Razr HD Maxx being No.1), S-Pen, multi-window multitasking, etc.
Don't think you have to have a Nexus or the acceptance of the Nexus crowd. Vote with your bucks and your feet. Wish you well with the Note 2.
Are you going to sell the Nexus?
I personally have had zero issues on AT&T via Straight Talk and love this device. I would highly recommend sticking with a GSM provider though, if you have service in your area, T-Mobile perhaps? As GSM unlocked devices gives one much more freedom to move carriers, plus, I suffered hell with Verizon, they are by far one of the worst companies I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with; never again.
Either way, good luck.
It's called T mobile?
I honestly never see the purpose of these threads. The forum isn't your personal blog. And I don't think any body necessarily has any care what you're saying (as mentioned previously by the person who said cool story bro). If you don't like the phone that's fine, just be on your way. Not being mean or anything but the general forum isn't ones blog

2. NOTE 3
3. MOTO X PHONE.
4. A possibly revamped s4 with a snapdragon 800
5. HTC ONE AND S4 Google edition.
Just wondering who is trading their nexus 4 for what phone and for what purposes?

I will never buy another phone that isn't in the Nexus line as long as Nexus is being made. I came from the iPhone 4 to the Nexus 4 with zero experience in any Nexus device, or even Android in general, and I can tell you that pure Android is the best Android. I have a bunch of friends who hate Android solely because they bought a low-end phone that was running an outdated version of Android and had low specs.
"Yeah, but you should buy those Google Edition phones! They're so good and still show off pure Android!"
Yes, but at the same time, no. It's what AOSP 'should' look like, but it isn't truly AOSP. The OEMs still have to input their proprietary drivers/kernels to make it compatible with that hardware, so it's still customized. Android is developed for the latest Nexus device, and Nexus is made to show off the latest Android. I will sincerely buy every Nexus device that will ever be made because it is so open (and cheap). The freedom granted to OEMs, or end-users, is ridiculous. One line of code to unlock the bootloader? For real? Why WOULDN'T you buy Nexus? Come on.

Historically, not all nexii are as cheap as the N4. Just ask galaxy nexus, nexus s, nexus one and google one owners who bought devices from play. They paid an arm for their devices!! I could flash Cyanogenmod and be good to go. I mean I had the EOL idea too but now I'm rethinking it. And to think what goodies may come in the fall. The Galaxy S4 LTE-A with a 2.3ghz processor.... Which one y'all this going to be the best? Right now I have the Moto X and it's the best phone I had so far but what about these other great phones are they just as good or better? Will the Nexus 5 be like the Moto X just with a bigger screen and a little differences? What y'all think?
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk
I have the SGS4 and honestly I'm so over skins on android. so no matter what the specs on a phone I'm done with anything skinned. That said I am torn between the Moto X and nexus 5. The 5 maybe has better specs but I really love the X and want motorola and the USA made X to do well. So in in the fence. 60% Moto x 40% nexus 5
I tried the Note 2 last year and hated the huge size. So for that reason the Note 3 is completely out of the question (even though i'd love it).
The LG G2 is out of the question for me also because in my opinion if i'm gonna get a 5" phone it's going to be the Nexus 5.
That being said, I love my Moto X. I have one more week to return it to AT&T and decide if I want something else but i'm not sure what i'm going to do.
From what I can tell the only advantages to the Nexus 5 will be the larger screen, the fact that it's LCD (which I prefer) and the development will probably be awesome.
The Moto X has SUCH good battery life, comfortable size, active notifications, and as someone else mentioned... built in the US which I like.
I'm pretty torn between the X and the Nexus 5 and ultimately i'll probably end up keeping the X and if anything i'll sell it down the road and pick up a Nexus 5 off contract.

I know I hate skinned android and I dont have much time to flash or keep up with the latest ROMS, so LG, Samsung, and HTC were out for me. I picked up the moto X and I will probably hold onto it for a little while and then sell if for the nexus.
That being said, the X is an awesome phone. Great form factor, active notifications are awesome, good battery, no lag or issues.
Would you switch when N5 comes out?

You can ask this question about any new device that comes out. Would you upgrade from your current phone to a newer phone? And my answer is that if your current phone does everything you need it to, then there's no point in upgrading.

If there was no point. Then no one ever would. Most phones now a days do everything one needs it's about want when upgrading

N5 pros over MotoX
- colourful LED notifications
- strong dev community
- processor
Moto X pros over N5
- everything else
So unless those few things bother you, just stick with the Moto X
If the Nexus 5 releases with a larger battery option I will be all over it.
If it has the same size battery as the moto x I will not be picking it up.
This phone has me absolutely addicted to all day battery life.

N5 probably won't be on Verizon at the $400 price point. But I would be all over it on a gsm carrier.

I'm getting the N5 the moment it's out. That doesn't mean I'm switching though. The Moto X will likely remain my primary phone. I just like wasting my money on things I don't need.

I was stuck between these two but this no long delay and the amazing reviews of the moto x by everyone has made me lean heavily this direction now to decide between the tmibile version or the developer lol

Lol what? And the fact that by the time the Nexus 5 comes out the Moto X will be two android releases behind? Also the speculated always listening on the Nexus 5 as well the X doesn't have much over it.

Why do you assume that's how it will be. I am willing to bet on it the X will receive 4.4 and skip 4.3

Am I the only person here who couldn't care less about what version of android the X gets updated to? The phone is perfect as is. I bought it for the features it was advertised to have, and Motorola delivered in spades. From this point on, if it never receives another update, I will still be just as happy with it.
Switching seems a bit crazy, but if I didn't already own the Moto X and wasn't majorly dissapointed with my Nexus 7, then yeah, I'd probably go for the Nexus 5, since I think it looks nice and its cheaper. Either way, I already own the Moto X and I'm very happy with it.

1) Moto X got rid of the LED notifications because they're using active notifications which are more helpful.
2) Yes that may be true
3) Processors aren't everything but fine.

I agree. 4.3 was an incremental update and 4.4 barely more than that. On this device I doubt either update will really make much of a difference... Not that I don't want them, it just doesn't seem important when the phone runs spectacularly as it is. That's the same reason I don't care about the lack of development.

Yes, processors aren't everything but the N5 with out a doubt has a better CPU and GPU and will have a better dev community which will lead to a better working phone. Active notifications are awesome but only if you're near your phone. If your phone is charging on a desk a couple of meters away from you and you hear it vibrate how will active notification tell you what happened?

Yep, no development doesn't bother me either. I have root and xposed framework. Don't need anything else. If ever a phone came with perfect software out of the box, it's the Moto X.

It still flashes on screen every few seconds if you have a new text, email, missed call, etc. The only time this feature auto shuts off to my knowledge is at night (configurable) and when the phone is in your pocket or face down.
Besides all that, I'm sure the N5 will be a great phone with great support, however the chances of it coming to Verizon are slim to none so its not even an option for a lot of us.

You wont be able to tell what it is. With an RGB LED you can set different colours to represent different types of notifications.
Anyway, I keep hearing everyone say Verizon has terrible phone options. What's so special about Verizon that you guys stay (I'm from Canada)?
Verizon has the best signal, but has a soviet union business model and is expensive. However it works everywhere. Only reason I stay is cause I use my phone for business. My bonus is sticking 20+ gigs to them every month
For those that came from the galaxy nexus, let me know if you've been happy with the moto x.
I was all set to ditch Verizon and buy the nexus 5. However the nexus 5 has not impressed me as much as I'd have hoped, and my wife is still worried about T-Mobile's service.
What worries me is losing control of my device. I would like to at least have root for backups and tethering. An unlocked bootloader would be nice too.

You're going to love the moto x coming from a gnex I guarantee it. Better screen, much better battery life, way better performance overall, feels good in the hand and the screen size to device ratio is pretty awesome. Its like all screen looking at the front. Verizon actually pushed the first update fairly quick by their standards and there is root now available for the update too. Its not as easy to root/mess around with this phone as the gnex but its not that bad either.
What he said. This phone is leaps and bounds about the GNex. It's one of those things that you're just going to have to try. If you don't like it, just take it back. But I can guarantee that you won't take it back.

If you liked the gnex then you'll love the X.. trust me.

So is the moto x bootloader unlockable and relockable or is the only option the developer version? I'm thinking of sticking with my current plan which would be cheaper than shared data even buying the phone outright.

All are unlockable except att , Verizon and mexico nextel.
Just to clarify, it would be staying on Verizon.

From what I understand the Verizon boot loader is locked. But you can use safestrap to partition up to 3gb and install a custom ROM to the partition. You would then "dual boot" and select to boot to the custom ROM.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I've had the Gnex, GS4, and now the Moto X. All with VZW.
Moto X is the best phone I've ever used.
Get the Dev Ed if you can.
I had the GNex on Verizon and loved it, then I (stupidly) went to T-Mobile and got an HTC One and had nothing but problems from the phone and the carrier, and I'm now happily back on Verizon with the Moto X. I feel confident that I've made the right decision for the next two years. As the others have stated, this phone is monumentally, significantly better than the GNex. Think of it as the GNex 2, where they took all the issues from the GNex, fixed them, and then added a few even more amazing things to really top of the whole experience. You have absolutely NOTHING to worry about if you get this phone. The only thing this phone lacks in relation to the GNex is the unlockable bootloader.
Posted from the comfort of my Moto X.
Pay full retail and get the Dev Edition with unlockable bootloader. Right now you have options for rooting the stock versions, but that may not always be the case, and unlocking the bootloader is the only way to insure complete control over your user experience in the future.
Hashcode and dhacker do brilliant work with SasfeStrap to give stock users options to have limited ROMs but even they will tell you to get a dev device if you can afford it.
New changes in the security in 4.4 KitKat will further complicate rooting and running modified systems on all devices that aren't bootloader unlocked and have custom kernel/boot.img. This is how the intend to segregate the user base into those willing to give up their warranty and take responsibility for managing their devices themselves and normal users. Basically developers and extreme enthusiasts in one group and everyone else in the other group.
^Moto diehard, right here.
You rocking an X, cell?

Well I would but I don't like the looks of the half white half black, and it may cost significantly more.

Yes sir! Well...two actually...I have T-Mobile and the VZW Dev editions.
I also am a current Verizon Galaxy Nexus user and considering the Moto X. I have unlimited data and because of my usage it is in my best interest to pay full retail for the phone (trying to hold out for the wooden backs).
Now when you say that the battery life is better, how much better? What is your screen time to total time ratio?
Any signal issues?
How much has the software update improved the camera?
These are my and I am sure others main issues with the Galaxy Nexus. I loved the form factor, the closet to pure Android we Verizon customers could get. The Moto X appears to be the next best or closet thing Verizon customers can get to another Nexus at this point.
