[Q]Things to know before installing a Custom ROM

Hi,
I have been looking through various custom roms for optimus 2x and intend to install one very soon. Before installing i have some questions
1. What is baseband? How do i know which one to use?
2. What is the best/recommended steps to install a custom rom? I know what you have to do before installing a custom rom, what i meant is the order in which you should install custom rom, kernel, some performance packs and baseband, etc.
3. What do you look for in a rom before deciding to install one?
And finally, how can i help the development community?

1. baseband is the software for radio in the phone. You dont have to flash new, you can keep on you baseband from original rom, its not flashed automatically when you flash custom roms by clockworkmod. you only need to download lg getril for example from market and install matching rill to your baseband.
2.
step1: root phone
step2: instal clockworkmod
step3: download zip file with rom to your sdcard
step3: power off phone, then hold volume down + pover on(first volume button) until the clockworkmod starts
step4: backup phone in CWM
step5: every thread with custom rom have the manual how to flash in cwm, its easy.
You can read about it on modaco optimus 2x forum. Lets google it.
There are basically two types of rom for O2X, the one is based on the modified stock rom. the second one is cyanogenmod based rom, i like the cyanogenmod.
You should use matching kernel to type of rom(cyanogenomd, based on ofiicial), kernel is closer to handle hardware, i can imagine it like kernel is between hardware and ROM, ROM is between kernel and user.
3. you should try some ROMs and decide what you like.

Your baseband is visible in Settings/About Phone. Try first to flash without changing it. Get the matching Ril with GetRil or LG Ril version in market.
To root you can use latest Superoneclick (see thread in dev section, it seems now to work with GB a well) or nvflash method (see rooting for dummies in dev section).
In the first case you instal cwm with ROM Manager from market, or your can flash it directly using Rusty!'s build (see stickies thread in dev section).
Nothing else to add to the above post. Two families of ROM as said, all coming from stock LG are based on 20L/M/O original ROM. Others are either cyanogen (see in Kang thread, as nightlies build bot is out of order for now) direct, or cyanogen derived (Miui).
Read carefully first posts in each ROM thread, and be sure to have always a back up.

No reason to flash kernel first it will be overwritten by ROM.
ROMs are always coming with a kernel!
First: ROM. A good thing is to boot then, and follow the First Run Configuration Wizard.
Second: Flash Kernel of your choice.
Third Power Pack if you want, mandatory with SPica's kernels to have all features.

No Problem = No change.
Golden Rule.

just to add.. don't forget to back up your messages/app data/whatnot with titanium backup or whatever
also note that a lot of the LG system apps will obviously be gone when going to CM7 for eg:
the camera for one thing has it's pros and cons. a lot of people seem to prefer the stock camera
the music player doesn't have a cool landscape mode
fm radio is **** with only 6 presets
sound recorder doesn't let you change quality
no built in memo pad (but you can always get one from the market anyway)
and the LG widgets (i like their weather and calendar widget)
"backup and restore" app which was quite useful (i believe it's made by Sprite).. but no worries since there's titanium anyway
although perhaps these system apps are backup-able as an apk in titanium?

Stock LG apps can effectively be backed up as apk, but they can't be run on CyanogenMod, so no interest.

I bought 2x 3 days ago. The lg gingerbread is fine. But not that impressive. I want to root it but the problem is rooting, voids your warranty. Is there is any way so that you can backup the android os given default (by lg), so that you can install it later to claim ur warranty later on. And is there is anything else? to do please correct me.

There are many stock ROMs over in the dev section and there are even guides to show how to restore it. So just use the search button and read
About rooting there is one guide I would recommend you using it because it really explains everything

Baseband can't be changed with cwm. Only smartflash. And a custom ROM always come with a kernel or it can't boot...

Better to go back to ext3, in case the new ROM doesn't format. And to be sure no residual file will be left and not overwritten, that could cause troubles.

Is there a newer basaband than 1035.21_20110725? This version is the same in all latest stock ROMS (V10D, V20L, V20M). Flashing the V20M (with smartflash) will have a different baseband although it will say 1035.21_20110725? I installed the leaked V20o but I have problems with signal loss after some hours in stand-by.

It's one of numerous LG inconsistencies... Different BB with same number.
It seems in fact they are not the same. Try different Rils with GetRil, the 20o one but also the 20l etc...

I did try different RIL when I had the V20o. I changed the RIL V20o Europe to V20L Italia which I had with V20M update which I did through LG official update. Do you think flashing V20M with smartflash and then installing the V20o will fix the problem?

Which Galaxy Note N7000 ROM recommended flashing for new user?

Greetings.
I am the first time user planning to flash my 16GB Galaxy Note GT-N7000 phone (from Asia).
Previously I have been hard bricked my phone (MoBo damaged) due to improper / incorrect kernel flashing ROM. Already sent to Service Centre for replacement of MoBo under warranty. Now it's in the progress and I should be expecting it back in the couples of days.
Anyhow, I still prefer third party ROMs with awesome GUI. I plan to "try" flashing again when my phone is back.
This time, I would take more caution while doing this stuff. My request is, for first time new user like me, which ROM is recommended (plus suitable Kernel type which is more power saving and low temperature operating)?
I mean here maybe pointing more to what I so call close to "Samsung Custom ROM". I think that should be more convenient and safer for me rather than trying completely on new AOSP type for the first time. This is only my own opinion

This is in no way development, please post in the correct section. Anybody wondering the reason why this user can post in the dev section is due to the amount of time he has been a member. We thought a user with a long membership would be aware of such a basic rule, guess not​

cleanote seems what you asking for. It's a clean rom based on stock, but very smooth

Honestly,i think every rom the Dev created are great.Just read through the OP of the each rom to see what rom is fit your style ( like you go to mall looking for shoe is fit you) and try it .Wish you luck...:victory:

I have viewed through few threads in ROM dev section. Honestly, I'm still digesting the contents and descriptions...
Also, I require Chinese input or viewing too (forgot to state).
So far, I have been read through Criskelo ROMs (I like its GUI i.e. close to GS3 too), Fusion ROMs, CM9 ROMs etc. Not sure if these ROMs may fulfill what I've been requested?? Safe Kernels (this really worries me from what I've been experienced before----hardbricked! scare!)?

I would recommend CRASH rom...you can request the DEV for your Chinese stuff...its touchwizz base...safe kernel and very smooth with NO BUGS at all..:good:

For the awesome user interface I would say Paranoid Android (CM9, not CM10).
For the chinese stuff, I think Criskelo's rom supports it"• ADD Chinese Keyboard (on request)"
I'm not really sure if that's what you're asking for.
I think PA also supports chinese.
I don't think there are "new users" roms. Just read carefully the instructions and you should be fine.

Hi, let's say if I would like to flash Criskelo ROM, which safe Kernel shall I choose to use?
Speedmod, AbyssNote, GL Notecore (never heard, is it safe kernel)??
I just got back my phone with default stock GingerBread 2.3.6 (correction) ROM, without any rooting after repairing

Make sure you read the details on Rooting and flashing your phone.
NEVER WIPE / RESET on ICS Stock Kernels/ ROMS..
There's a lot of info in Dr. K's Stock ROM thread..
As for what ROM to use - I'd say CleaNote is probably what you're after, very close to stock with bloat removed. Bundled with the Dev's own Kernel...
Anyway, Good luck and remember to read, read and read again before you start messing around and bricking your device again..

Should I flash any safe kernel before installing CleaNote ROM (as recommended)? Root required?
Also, what is "bloat removed"?

First your anwwer to what OP stands for it means "Original Post" .
Secondly, as you are on stock GB, you are safe from the Brickbug & can very well flash as you like, but keep in mind two things:
1- Read, re read & follow to the point the ROM developers installation instruction.
2- Do not Wipe / factory reset from any unsafe kernel. Only wipe from a safe kernel, i.e., GB & in case of ICS those with their MMC_CAP_ERASE command disabled like Speedmod K3-11, GL Notecore, etc.
Pls. read the stick section for additional information
By the way I would recommend Kingdroid Notemania Version 5.1.1 (With S3 Touchwiz UI Mods) with Speedmod Kernel for ICS K3-11 (Good performance & better battery)

I've downgraded to stock GB ROM 2.3.5 (XXKK1 in my region). Then, I used InitialCFRootFlasher (CF-Root-SGN_ZS_MUL_KK1-v5.0-CWM5) to root + CWM as guided by owner of the OP. Would both different XX and ZS kernel types affect anything in term of phone functionality?
Finally, I found SuperUser and CWM in the menu as per attached pictures. Rooted, right?
What would be my next step to flash Criskelo v10.1 ROM? Thanks.

Your next step should have been second after rooting gb, back efs up, see my profike page, statistics and then backup thread I started

[Q] ROM Options...

Hey guys and gals,
Noob here, only installed 1 or 2 ROM's in the past, but I would now like a hand deciding on a suitable ROM for my needs on my Galaxy Tab P1000 (UK/European)
I would like a ROM that is nice and responsive, has good battery life and is fairly customisable, and I guess most come already rooted? I would prefer it to be ICS or JB too I have looked about and seen a few CM10 ones, some MIUI ones and various others but I am lost for choice, I have no idea what ones are best.
I want everything to work (all wireless connections, camera etc...) don't mind things like auto brightness or similar as that isn't major. The main reason for wanting to change from the stock gingerbread is because I find it unresponsive and boring.
Sorry if this is in the wrong section, thought Q&A was my best bet.

Quick question,
For the MIUI v4 ICS ROM, which I like the look of alot, it needs a "restock" and install Overcome or a CM9 guide to be followed. (ROM link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613842 )
However, do I still need to do this as I haven't already installed any custom ROM? If I do can you give me a feint idea how I can approach it? Or can I just wipe cache/data etc.. and install the ROM?
Sorry if I am being a pain, not had to do any of this before.

Many has your problem.
The thing is, newer ( well, post April 2012) ROM use new MTD layout, which need you to come from stock, or from same layout.
If your custom ROM were GB, no issue. They are stock BML partition, which the new rom can convert upon install.
If it were cm9 or 10, watch the mtd layout. The installer isn't made to convert older mtd to new mtd, so need restock.

Think I have got it, can someone please confirm my steps to make sure I am doing it right?
1. Flash latest CWM recovery using Odin
2. Make Nandroid backup using CWM
3. Flash GB-stock-safe, then flash Overcome kernel 4.0.0.tar using Odin for both (do I do these separately or is there a way to flash them together?)
4. Place MIUI v4 ROM and GApps etc.. on Tab's SD card.
5. Boot into recovery, wipe cache, wipe data and flash ROM.
6. Flash GApps and patch's etc...
7. Reboot into ROM
If it doesn't reboot into MIUI I need to reflash the ROM as the first flash converted my Tab to MTD? Is that correct?

Cwm is contained in kernel.
If you are willing to forgo backup, must start with GB stock safe v5
Then overcome kernel.
By then you have a cwm recovery.

Got it all installed/flashed last night. Went all ok and I worked out that the kernel included overcome cwm after reading a guide from the link in your Sig.
I suppose its good that I love the ROM too

Few questions, CWM Backup, Custom Stock, Gingerbread...

Slowly getting use to my Note, and totally loving it... Yes, I have joined this party very late... But trust me, this device is PREMIUM compared to my last phone... So enjoying all what it has to offer...
However....
1) Is there a way to check your backups in CWM?? Just did a backup of what has taken me 2x days to finely tune the ROM.. only to find it failed an MD5 check and so wont restore.... - POINTLESS backup
2) Is there any official Samsung Stock Roms (UK pref / International) that are converted/flashable via CWM?? (Dont mind if they are GB, ICS or JB) I will of course be using Philz Kernel if its ICS based....
3) Are there any CLEAN Gingerbread roms available, either based off official Samsung GB or if there was a clean CM7 build...??
Other than that, I think most things are cool with the N7000

I was in CWM and started the backup, watched a bit of TV and came back to find the phone had rebooted, didnt tell me if it was successful or not, just ready to use phone again. Would of been nice if CWM had failed for it stay on that screen and show an error. I have since wiped the phone and now the backup is useless... All the files are there, and all 1.2Gb of data is present in seperate files. Not sure if I can flash them one at a time, although not a great way to restore...

I wondered if there was a STOCK (DEODEXED) Gingerbread Rom that can be flashed in CWM, or if there was ever a build of CM7 for the N7000 note... As far I can see there is no CM7, which surprises me as the phone shipped with Gingerbread and the phone itself was considered premium at the time, so would of thought the CM team would of done one...??

sorry i misunderstood what you were asking. CWM should NOT automatically reboot, so to me that means you had an unsuccessful backup. It should at the end say something like backup complete... also, regarding a million files in blob folders for CWM, that is not the best format. in backup settings, change the format to "tar" not "dup"

if you want the info, search for the difference b/t deodexed and odexed on google, its interesting..
But yeah LSZ is a little old (almost a year now).
I would go with something XXLT4, LT5, LT6, LT9, or LTA (in order of newest, but there have been no major changes since LT4, so LT4 is fine), if you can find one. be sure to always include /preload in your full wipe procedure when flashing stock roms.
Another option is to just flash a FULL stock ROM, then Flash PhilZ (PC Odin or Mobile Odin) - but beware using odin and not have all the knowledge puts you in the DANGER ZONE of killing your phone with the brick bug

to Install GB via flashable zip, you can flash via Mobile Odin or CWM - or if the thread has special install instructions, follow those

As for CM7, they just never did it... CM9 was first.
Also, I know you're looking for stock stuff right now, but CM10.2 is a MAJOR upgrade from CM7. The official CM10.2 nightlies are pretty amazing.
But thats all opinion, the stock has a lot of cool features and benefits... just not for me (i used to love it, but its too bloated and slow)

Rooted and xposed, if i skip an Android 5 OTA, will i be notified for Android 6 ?

Hi,
I haveandroid 5.0.2 stock rom rooted and xposed.
I recently be notified about a "little" Android 5 OTA update. After discussions, i undesrtood that if i want to make this update, i could have to reflash my rom, reroot mydevice, reinstall xposed, etc.., so i think i will skip it.
But if i skip it, will i be notified for "Android 6" ?

Wrong section.

This OTA should be the stagefright fix., you will need this update to receive/install android 6. You have to be on the latest firmware to do so. But if you are rooted with custom recovery you will have to go back to stock anyway, so you can flash a firmware including this fix than.

Anyway, to update my phone to this stagefright fix Android 5 OTA and when i will update to android 6 OTA, i will have to flash stock "unrooted" firmware, so i will lost all my apps and data.
With my olders phones i used cyanogen mod to have a "pure Android" with some tweaks, but with my Motorola Moto G 2, which is already "pure Android", i was happy to use "only" Xposed for just the tweaks i want. BUT, i didn't understood that i could'nt update Android whithout the hard process of reflashing stock, reroot, reinstall xposed, reinstall my apps.....
So i'm thinking to flash Cynaogen mod on my Moto G 2, but could you confirm :
-Future update, including big one's like CM 12 to CM 13 can be installed without having to reflash anything and so without lost data ?
-I can install xposed and modules on Cyanogen firmware if i need extra tweaks not included in CM ?

And yes, I´m talking about stock firmware. To receive OTA updates you´ll have to be on latest stock recovery/firmware and be unrooted.

So you don´t need to have a nandroid backup to go back to stock.
But you will lose your apps and personal data of the internal memory, you can backup your apps with titanium but basically it´s the hard process.
Even if you use cyanogen mod you maybe can dirty flash the small updates, the step from cm12 to cm13 demands a clean flash and your data will be lost.
Xposed is working on all versions imho, rooted stock, cm or other custom roms. A lot of custom roms have a bunch of nice tweaks on board.
At the end of the day you have to options:
- Flash latest stock firmware and recovery (with the loss of your personal data) and wait for official motorola 6.0, then flash TWRP and root your device the recommended way. Flash/install your favorite tweaks and rootapps like xposed (There is a 6.0 OTA of the brazillian soaktest available, which works on XT1069 and XT1068 but I think that´s not what you are looking for).
- Choose one of the upcoming custom roms based on cm 13 sources which bring a lot of tweaks with it and can be used with xposed also. Some are already available but still have some bugs, you´ll have to decide if it´s worth to wait until everything is more stable (Your personal data will get lost also).
I´m on a custom rom and kernel and I will wait until my favorite rom will be availabe on 6.0 or another one will satisfy my needs as a daily driver.

I make regular titanium backups but you're right, it will be a hard and long process
I have also "link2sd" which link a lot of my app data to my external sd card.., i don't know how titanium will restore all this kind of settings...

I would choose this option but if the "small updates : for instance from android 6 to android 6.." are not easier to do that whit rooted stock rom, i have no reason to switch to CM. I have all tweaks i want with xposed and 3 modules (gravity box, pbmc and APM+) but i just would to avoir to have to do a hard process each time there is an android update..
I´m on a custom rom and kernel and I will wait until my favorite rom will be availabe on 6.0 or another one will satisfy my needs as a daily driver.

If you are on latest stock rom you will be notified on your XT1068, no matter if you are rooted or not. You won´t be able to install it when you are not on stock rom/recovery and with system changes like xposed.
About updating:
Most custom roms are cm or asop based, so there is no big difference between CM "official" and other custom roms.
In some cases you can dirty flash the small steps (6.0 to 6.0.1 or something like that) which means you have not to wipe your data etc.
A dirty flash is often possible but not recommended because you can have problems like fc´s afterwards or even worse softbrick your device.
In most cases you have to clean flash a new version which always means take the hard road. But I did this procedure very often now and it takes me one evening to set up my phone incl. installing apps, tweaks and so on.
If you chose a stock rom with xposed and your favorite modules the update process is similar to the one on a custom rom as far as wiping is necessary. But you have to do some more work.
You have to flash stock recovery again, full unroot the phone and revert the system changes you made, often the much safer way is flash back to an untouched stock rom which includes a stock recovery. The stock recovery can be extracted from the firmware and is always part of it. So if you flash stock the recovery will become stock too.
The advantage of a custom rom is not just the inbuilt tweaks, they are often more fluid and battery friendly than stock roms,they are mostly pre-rooted and xposed works on the most of them too.
The update process depends on the rom here, sometimes you can dirty flash the small steps, sometimes it always needs a clean flash.

-No need to flash untouched stock rom before update.
-No need to reroot after update.
-No need to reflash custom recovery after update.
But both custom and stock rom has these inconvenients :
-Wipe necessary after updates. (sometimes littles updates can be did without wipe with custom roms).
So i think i prefer to choose custom rom, and i think that the best solution for me is to wait a CM 13 (android 6) stable release. Do you think it is a good solution ?

In the meantime you can try a 5.1.1 rom like minimal os which is rock stable.

As you are from france I suppose you have the european firmware on your XT1068 which is the one with "DSDSALL" in it´s name.
Please confirm that in your "about phone" settings (firmware version and build Nr) !
Just for your info: DE stands for germany,BR for brazil,GB for great britain and so on.
So if you are sure that you are on the european firmware the second firmware from above is the right for your phone: RETAILDSDSALL_XT1068_5.0.2_LXB22.99-16_cid7_CFC.xml.zip.
LXB22.99-16 is the latest 5.0.2 build.

Yes, I think the stock firmware in the post above ( RETAILDSDSALL_XT1068_5.0.2_LXB22.99-16 ) has the latest update included. Hi,
I didn't made any flash since our last discussion and i'm always on Android 5.0.2 without stagefright fix. I will choose between CM13 (when it will be stable) and Stock MM when it will be official.
Meanwhile, i downloaded the update by mistake and it prompt me to install it every day. I can only report it but not fully cancel it.
Do you know how or where i can delete the downloaded file ?
