stuck on slash screen, No recovery, Bootloop

Hi all.
I tried to flash my HTC one from recovery (twrp) after doing a factory reset within twrp. (I thought at the time a had stock recovery, I didn't. I had twrp.
Now my phone won't boot. Gets stuck on splash screen. If i enter the bootloader (which works no problem) and choose recovery, it starts recovery, pops up with twrp splash screen for second, then reboots to frozen htc splash screen.
Fastboot is working.
I've tried clearing the cache using fastboot. samething
I've tried flashing other recoveries,. nothing samething. (others in different predicaments have been able to do this successfully)
I've been reading that returning back to stock using RUU.zip method is the only way to go.
I want to try that, but before I do, I must make sure I understand it correctly and I've done all I can.
Relock the bootloader? Can I unlock it again?
Find a RUU.Zip that matches my OS version
Flash using fastboot.
I've been looking through HTC1GURU at his collection of ruu.zip but can't find anything that really matches my OS.
Any suggestions and advice will be most welcome.

There isn't any ruu for orange (.61 base) only a nandroid backup which require a working recovery to be flashed. if you don't really care about staying with the orange sw, you could simply restore your phone to international EU version (.401 base). You already have s-off and the proper mid, so it will only require to downgrade hboot to 1.44, change cid to HTC__001 and run the 1.29.401 ruu.exe. you can use this guide

I don't care about orange sw. I'll do some reading. I do have a nandroid backup. No good to me, unless I get recovery working.
Not too confident about downgrading the Hboot, but i'll read and read.

downgrading hboot is pretty easy
just follow the steps under ''If you’re on hboot which is above 1.44'' from nkk71's guide
then change cid
then run ruu.exe
but do not use a win 8.1 computer (compatibility issue with hboot 1.44)

Thanks for that last bit, what about Win8.
I've spotted the steps that apply to me, just playing them out in my head.
Out of curiosity after a downgrade the HBoot, will it be locked and s-on?

windows 8.0 should be fine, but definitively not 8.1

OK, a little lucky positive progress.
I managed to flash clockworkMod recovery, don't ask me how, maybe erasing the cache lots of times did it, i'm sure it was a recovery I had already tried. I checked my download list and confirmed I did download it., so i would of tried to flash it two days ago. Funny.
Still stuck on splash screen, but can boot into recovery. (clockworkmod)
Please, what is the best way to proceed, I'm thinking nandroid backup, but like I said, I couldn't care less about orange. I would love to put Mike1986 stock rom 4.3 or 4.4
I'm unable or don't know how to get folders or files on the phone's internal SD card, because it doesn't boot up a rom any more. Y-cable?
I'm concerned with all the "can't" at the bottom of recovery screen.

Softbrick (kinda) problem

Hi all,
So let me explain. I was given a HTC One for repair and the person just told me that her child did something wrong in the settings and the phone didn't boot anymore. The phone was on an older stock ROM and didn't get past the HTC One logo. Something was corrupted because the startup sound was cutting off before it had played like it should.
anyways: the phone is S-ON and I have unlocked the bootloader via HTCDev. I can install CWM, CWM Touch and TWRP but can't install any Sense rom because of the antique HBoot 1.56. I can however boot into CM 10.2.1 stable with no problems and ARHD 9.4 but with nou touch. On both ROMs firewather and rumrunner fail (usb debugging is on and root also for adb and apps).
Possible fixes I think off:
-Install an older ARHD version like 42 or 61 or 62 that is compitable with my firmware (but can't find them anywhere);
-install an insecure kernel compatible with CM10.2 (can't find one);
-Somehow just revert back to a Sense rom, wich I can't.
I just want S-off but every s-off tool fails. Is there another way to instal RUU exe or ZIP without S-OFF or at least upgrade the damn antique radio image that belongs in a museum ?

Hboot 1.56 is not that old the current is 1.57! You can install RUU being S-ON the RUU must be the same or higher version, signed and the bootloader has to be locked/relocked. For Sense ROMs you might try TWRP 2.6.3.3 it seems to work best. ARHD 81 should work with your phone you have to wipe in Aroma before you install it.

I couldn't get ARHD 81 to work, but if someone is in the same situation here is what I did:
1) Relock your bootloader with this command:
fastboot oem lock
2) download this signed radio file : https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=file-thanks&fid=23622183712460395&mid=70&download_id=t0kvkiiupbv0r5gakftasij7d5&tid=1412801244&hc=731cbdd91c39e4104b17bb47e6236fd9614838fa88b158009a1006be6b2ec5ea
3) Place the file in the same platform-tools directory for ease of use and insert this command:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
4) Once the phone reboots into a black HTC screen enter:
fastboot flash zip <name_of_the_file_here_without_quotes>
5) Normally it should succeed and tell you to immediatly flush, if it fails reattempt to flash the zip and it will succeed.
6) Download your prefered Recovery, mine is CWM but TWRP is even better sometimes and enter:
fastboot reboot-bootloader and then fastboot flash recovery <recovery.img>
6B) EDIT: to be able to flash a recovery IMG with S-On you need to unlock you bootloader again.
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlocktoken_bin or whatever your unlocktoken is called
Then accept the security warning on your phone with the volume keys and power key.
7) Once succeed enter recovery and flash Maximus HD
8) Once done please enter bootloader again by pressing vol- + power or bij selecting advanced, reboot bootloader in recovery.
9) Because we're S-On, we need to manually flash boot.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img and if you get bootloops fastboot erase cache
Once this is done you should be able to boot into the rom and everything should work. Flashing this has upgraded my hboot to 1.57. Now I will report if I succeed to get S-off.

Well I couldn't find an RUU that was signed and for my version. Also I don't know why but I couldn't get ARHD to work. Maybe I need s-off or another recovery but even with elemental X it didn't boot.

Okay so what I want to suggest you do is for starters go in unlock the bootloader as re locking it before doing anything is pointless when once everything is fixed is when you'd need to do it. Also I recommend that you install the custom recovery first and flash the rom from there rather than trying to flash it using fastboot as then at least we can get a standard recovery message which may be easier to find an answer for, I recommend using the very latest twrp recovery from their site as that should be able to flash all roms but make sure you install a stock sense 6 rom as the phone needs to be on the latest update with the kk radios and obviously that means having an hboot of 1.57 which would allow you to install custom roms that are running on kk otherwise you'll have issues and if you've followed what I suggest and it doesn't work a logcat and even a video of what is actually happening will help a lot to see what's going on but first things first is make sure that phone is on the latest hboot and the latest radio.
Also what version of phone is it? is it a m7ul? I'll send you an ruu link if I know what version we're looking at

The phone is allready been returned to the owner, it was just a repair job because the phone was out of waranty and nobody in this town could fix it. in fact, some idiot that didn't know what he was doing flashed the wrong hboot version (other phone/model) on it somehow and it was a mess.
I did manage to repair it trough an RUU I found I think or I did install a custom sense 6 rom... I don' remember exactly but it had a mismatching hboot version that's all I remember

[Q] help with reverting to stock/updating firmware

Hey everyone,
I have looked everywhere but havent found a way to return to stock. I simply want to return to stock so that i can update my firmware. My details are as follows:
S-ON
Hboot: 1.56
OS-4.19.401.11
my bootloader is unlocked, obviously
I just need someone to direct me in the correct path.
Ive searched a lot but havent gotten far,please, I appreciate any help i can get from.

You can follow nkk71's guide in my signature.
If you don't want to go completely back to stock just to get OTA you can flash this Guru Reset 4.19.401.11 in TWRP. In Aroma just select stock recovery and radio, when you reboot you will have stock recovery, stock rom. To get the OTA updates, you will have to relock your bootloader. You can use this command in bootloader/FASTBOOT USB:

Thank you so much! i searched a lot for my versions reset tool. Just one last question. When i update my firmware and OS now and make a nandroid backup, will that nandroid help me revert back to stock after i have rooted my phone again?

Yes, it will make it a little easier. You will need to make the nandroid backup the first thing when you boot into recovery the first time before you root the phone. Save it to your computer for future use. If you are able to get the stock recovery from the firmware you can use it with your nandroid backup to get you close to stock. You would flash the stock recovery with the same commands as you flashed the custom recovery.

[Closed] How to Return to Stock Recovery for OTA Updates

Hello all again. It's been almost year since last here, and clearly I have learnt nothing in the meanwhile.
First, specifications:
I have an HTC One M7 (AT&T) that had been updated to 4.3 OTA, then unlocked via htcdev, flashed with CWM 6.0.4.3 recovery, and then rooted with the Superuser zip on the CWM site. The device remains S-On.
Now, for the detailed inquiry:
I've been in the Stone Ages (see, Jelly Bean) for a while and have been planning on updating my phone for some time. However, the easy way, i.e. OTA, requires that I return to stock recovery. Now, as far as I know, this would require the use of an RUU (I'm not quite sure which one - perhaps "RUU_M7_UL_JB_50_Cingular_US_1.26.502.12_Radio_4A.14.3250.13_10.33.1150.01_release_318450_signed_2.exe" from AndroidRUU?) which would require that I lock my bootloader (correct?) which would also happen to wipe my device. I was hoping that I might be able to flash the stock recovery image (which I have been unsuccessful thus far in finding on my friend Google, since I assume it was deleted from my phone when I flashed CWM?) without having to go through an RUU. Is such a thing feasible? Where would I find the appropriate stock recovery image file to do so? And is there a way, once I (hopefully) receive the OTA update, to copy that new stock recovery image to my PC before I switch back to custom recovery to avoid bothering all you fine folks about this again?

You can install stock recovery using fastboot command.
However to apply OTA, if your phone is S-On, you must lock the bootloader.
You don't have to lock bootloader if your phone is Soff, for OTA, just stock recovery is good enough.

Just flashing the stock recovery will probably not allow you to successfully install OTAs. You have to have stock rom, stock recovery and possibly some /preload/ files that were deleted when you unlocked your bootloader. The quickest way to stock for OTA would be to flash a RUU. I would propose this route:
Option A
Lock your bootloader
Flash RUU 3.17.502.3
Receive OTA updates if they are still available
Option B
Lock your bootloader
Flash in bootloader: firmware 4.18.502.7
Flash RUU 4.18.502.7
Flash in bootloader: firmware 5.12.502.2
Flash TWRP 2.6.3.3
Download Guru Reset 5.12.502.2 and place on your sdcard
Boot into TWRP and install GURU Reset
For complete stock Say no to installing Root when exiting TWRP and Flash the Stock Recovery

Thanks for the feedback. I was a bit surprised to find out about needing to re-lock the bootloader even with stock recovery since a bunch of other places I looked said that I could use an unlocked bootloader as long as everything else was stock (just couldn't find a way to return to stock recovery without an RUU - which would require re-locking the bootloader - at the time). Used this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545227) from Majmoz's signature and got the relevant recovery.img from it. Since I had it, I figured I might as well try it before going through the process of re-locking the bootloader since being bounced out of the OTA and then going through the full process of relock-RUU-OTA anyhow was the worst that could happen. Turns out it worked.
So, for posterity's sake in case anyone else should come across a similar issue, everything I did (most of it probably unnecessary, but who knows):
-Made CWM backup (in case I happened to need to re-lock the bootloader which would wipe the device data to factory)
-Pulled that backup to my PC in case flashing to stock recovery wiped it (adb pull [backup directory, e.g. /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup/[folder]])
-Went into recovery from the bootloader, fastboot, plugged in the usb, and flashed the stock recovery (fastboot flash recovery [the downloaded stock recovery .img file in the platform-tools directory])
-Went back to the bootloader menu and entered the stock recovery and rebooted the device from there (I recall having to do that when I flashed CWM for the recovery to "stick", not sure if it was necessary here)
-Went into AT&T Software Update, let it download off the Wi-Fi, and let it apply. Did its thing with the image of the green downward arrow within the circulating arrows followed by reboot a few times, the "Android Update" screen where it runs through your applications, and voila, I am now on 4.4.2.
Updates:
-Have downloaded the updated stock recovery image.
-Flashed CWM Recovery back onto device
-Re-rooted via CWM (confirmed root)
-Made a new backup through CWM.
Now, if only I could figure out what the issue with the LTE signal is since I've never fiddled with that - guess I can heckle AT&T tech support for that.

Flashing a recovery will not wipe anything but its a good call to backup on your computer :good:

no but again its a good practice to check if the recovery is working correctly.

Have you checked you preferred network setting (GSM/CMDA/LTE AUTO)?
Is your apn correctly configured?

Good to know: the backup directory actually showed as empty while I still had stock, and then each backup's folder reappeared when I put CWM back on - was patting myself on the back for a few minutes there.

It worked! Used *#*#4636#*# to pull that up (didn't know one could do that!) and, sure enough, it was on "WCDMA Preferred" for some reason. Switched it back to "GSM/CDMA/LTE AUTO" and my long-lost signal has returned.

I got an OTA update named OTA_M7_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_TMOUS_7.18.531.35-7.18.531.2_release_450302.zip with size about 180MB.
Did anybody else get it?
I can't apply the update though because I have twrp and the phone is rooted. I was wondering if someone else got the update and applied it successfully on a rooted phone.

and the answer is probably yes since I don't see why T-mobile USA would push an ota update only to you
7.18.531.35 is the t-mobile US equivalent of 7.17.1540.35 which is the latest version with the stagefright 1.0 vulnerability fixed.
I can't apply the update though because I have twrp and the phone is rooted. I was wondering if someone else got the update and applied it successfully on a rooted phone.

You need to be on 100% stock rom including stock recovery to install ota updates. Better to return to stock using a ruu before applying the update imo since many users soft bricked their phones when attempting to install lollipop ota updates on stock rooted phones. If you need the RUU, look in the RUU collection thread, there is a 7.18.531.2 RUU posted there (link in my signature). Don't forget that questions should be posted in the q&a section, not in general. :good:

Thanks for your help. I found the RUU for my version. So, since I need to go back to RUU flash, I will need to re-setup my phone from scratch again just for getting this OTA....sucks!!
I wish they would make it easier to update modified phones. Just overwrite my root changes to /system and destroy my recovery but keep my /data and /sdcard. I can recover from that much faster than doing RUU and set up from scratch!!

So, if I restore system and boot partitions from my backup to stock, can I sideload the OTA ZIP using TWRP?

It is, you'll loose root every time you do an ota update.

The ota is flashed using the stock recovery, and the stock recovery is also updated in that process.
So, on m7, isn't there way to flash stock on /system and stock recovery through fastboot and then take the OTA? I have done that on at least Samsung and Moto phones in the past and it worked fine.

No, the updater-script will only work with stock recovery
I should have made a recovery.img from the original stock recovery partition.

You can't backup the stock recovery directly from the phone (actually yes you can but it requires s-off and its somewhat complicated.
Do you know if I can find the stock recovery here somewhere?

It was possible to update a stock rom + rooted phone simply by flashing the stock recovery back in the past (on kitkat roms and eariler) but it looks like its not possible anymore on lollipop updates. So much ppl posted here with the same problem: "Phone is stuck at HTC splash screen after installing update on stock rooted phone". Example here and here
The biggest problem if the ota install fine but the phone is stuck at the booting screen (like in the link above) is that your firmware will be updated to 7.18.531.35 so you won't be able to use the 7.18.531.2 RUU anymore unless you achieve S-OFF or edit your MISC partition.

Thanks for the great help! I can't thank you enough.
One question: if I do fail to apply the OTA zip after restoring boot, system and recovery to stock, I will still be able to get TWRP back on the recovery through fastboot and restore my full TWRP backup to get a working system back, right? Is there a gotcha in that route?

yes, even if the ota installation fails, you''ll be able to access fastboot, flash back twrp and restore your twrp nandroid backup. :good:
