If I purchase the MetroPCS version of the Lumia 521, would I be able to use Nokia Suite to download and install the T-Mobile version of the firmware? Are the firmware locked to the carrier-specific devices?
Product codes (sincde I can't link to the site that lists them):
059T039 RM-917 VAR NAM US METROPCS WIRELESS <- I'd like to buy this one because it's cheaper
059S0B4 RM-917 VAR US T-MOBILE SL <- then upgrade to this one

You should be able to swap firmware, but you still might have the issue where you need an unlock code to use a t-mobile SIM, as that's usually hardware locked. I can't say for sure as I don't own a 521 and know if they are pre-unlocked.
I debranded my 521 with code 059s000, and the SIM Lock is still active.
The answer to your question is no, buy the T-mobile one because you can request unlock code when you meet all their criteria. Getting a Metro PCS phone and the code from Metro PCS is probably tough if you are not a customer.
There still isn't any unlock services that is cheap on the 521. Until that happens, you probably want to get the T-mobile one.

Is that just carrier unlock or carrier subsidy unlock? I'm not too keen on the IMEI unlock scenarios.

I thought SIM Lock is all there is? The 521 is cheap enough to be a prepaid phone so I don't think there are subsidies.

I just recently found that out. Its an unlock to switch from something like att gophones to att's normal service or Cincinnati bell to att. Its still an unlock, but its probably a subsidiary in the first place.
There are 4 unlock levels and the one other I know of off the top of my head is a corporate SIM lock. Its essentially for locking a device down to one or two issued SIMs an employee might be assigned.

Lumia 521 t mobile pin code
Do you know how to get the pin code of a Lumia 521 t mobile, to be able to use it with another network service provider?

Hi, so I recently bought a used HTC Windows Phone 8X, but it is only for ATT, and I don't want to pay the $20 unlocking fee, so is there a software, or something I can use to unlock it, or do I have to pay for the code?
Thanks.
TO be honest, I haven't really seen any material on the HTC 8X, whether its a utility to extract roms or a source where they can be obtained. Hopefully someone can be a little more help than me just saying no.
Bump
You'll either need to call AT&T or go online and have get a carrier unlock code. The only roms available for the 8X are european.

As someone who has unlocked a few iPhones from AT&T via their chat service (I've never been an AT&T Customer), I can say it's worth a shot to try that first. It's free and the worst they can say is "no". Having said that, keep in mind that the T-Mobile variant of the HTC 8x is a different model than the AT&T one. The AT&T one give you LTE on T-Mobile, but they disabled HSPA+ over AWS. (The chipset supports it). The T-Mobile version is the same as the international version with the addition of AWS support in the radio.
I have a TMO HTC 8x and looked into this quite a bit.
Don't know about software, but you get an unlock code on eBay for under $5......

Is it possible? I have a lumia 521 for metro that I'm currently using to work on apps but my family plan is on AT&T. I'm coming from android so is there a ROM I have to flash to use a sim card for them?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
SIM unlock and ROM flashing rarely have anything to do with one another. SIM unlock (depending on the locking carrier) may be free, have a nominal cost, be only available on the grey market online, or be utterly unavailable at this time.
Be aware that AT&T uses different cellular bands than T-Mobile / MetroPCS. Make sure that the phone will work on AT&T first! You may find that you're unable to get any speed better than EDGE...

The bands are all the same so I'll try finding a SIM unlock, thanks.
Guys, I am looking for unlocking my Nokia Lumia 521 which is tied with the T-Mobile. I got it couple of days back when I came to US couple of days back, but I am based out in India and not been able to use it with the Indian Carriers.
Please read the FAQ... There aren't any ROMs that ignore the SIM locking mechanism. You'll need to either call T-Mobile (or MetroPCS for the OP) or purchase an unlock code from various online sites.

Hello there,
I got nokia lumia 635 At&T and I want to be able to use it on GSM network.
Will Flashing the phone help ?
or it is only by unlocking ?
and is there a way to unlock for free or I just should pay for some company and if so , which is the cheapest company out there ?
Thanks in Advance !
Kind Regards,
Zaza .
Hello, if you want to use this phone with another carrier you have to unlock it ! Contact ATT if you are an ATT consumer for the unlocking code. If you are not an ATT consumer you will have to buy an unlocking code. Search on ebay or Internet to find someone who can provide you this code.
Unbranding will help you to get ride od ATT's firmware and software that's all you can have with another firmware. Your phone will not be unlocked for using it with another GSM SIM.
Actually AT&T unlocked my GoPhone variant for free and I am not an AT&T customer. All they required were a copy of my receipt and the devices IMEI. Took 2 days to receive the code but at least it was FREE!!! This is a great little device and for the sale price it was well worth it!!! Unfortunately no success on unbranding due to platform security. So far only able to flash from prepaid variant to postpaid variant but since the device isn't compatible with my Verizon service anyways wasn't really worried about it. For $40, it keeps my 6 year old off my Ativ Odyssey and it's another device to play with and explopre for exploits. Worth it!!!
How did you contact AT&T - phone # / Email / Chat?

I want to buy the at&t gophone nokia 635 from amazon for $40 and use on tmobile.
How did you input your receipt on that site? Did you buy the gophone? It says right on that site that gophone must be active for 6 months first, and they also told me that on the phone. How did you do it exactly, and are you in the united states?
Thanks
I reached out to sprint for the unlock code to unlock my phone. The rep, via chat, told me that my phone is already unlocked to be used locally and internationally. I asked him to give the code anyway just in case, and he said "Unlocking code or MSL code is only for older devices that are not unlock capable."
I thought only Verizon's phones were sold unlocked. Has sprint started doing this as well on new phones?

No its uicc locked domestically if purchased through sprint until paid off, internationally yes its capable of using any sim on non domestic towers.
Once fully paid off etc you can ask for it to have a uicc unlock so it will accept a att sim etc.
I bought it brand new off eBay. Maybe that's why the agent said it is already unlocked?

A friend of mine tried to put a different sim on his Sprint phone outside of the USA and couldn't. He had to call Sprint to unlock it.

Is it a SM-950U or U1 ?
U1 is unbranded version and pre-unlocked. The U is the carrier variant.
The U would have been locked unless purchased full retail and active on a account atleast 50 days per sprint policy.
Sprint technically dosnt have to unlock it if it dosnt meet their guidelines.

Did you try inserting another SIM card in your Note 8 and see if you can place a call?
If it works with a card other than Sprint, it should work even abroad.

"Did you try inserting another SIM card in your Note 8 and see if you can place a call? "
I don't have one to try it. Otherwise, that would have been one of my first tries.
mine got unlocked automatically after ~50 days last fall
i didn't contact them or anything, one day it just ... happened
it was paid in full from Samsung since they had that sweet trade-in deal for Note7 owners

I had to wait 50 days, and it automatically unlocked. No lease, no payments.
Apparently the only way is to call them, If I buy this phone used would I have any chance of unlocking it in the future ?
hey all
i have one note galaxy SM-N960U
VERSION ONE UI : 2.0
AT&T USA ORIGINAL CARRIER
I need a Flash Rom to unlock it ,to work with my new carrier in Morocco
I think you need at&t to unlock it or pay one of those sketchy places online which I don't recommend.
CAN YOU RECOMMEND A FAST WAY
For me, when I paid off my phone (was on the AT&T payment plan because of a BOGO deal)
I was able to use the ATT website, enter the IMEI and some other bull****, then ATT emailed me the unlock code.
As far as I know, this only unlocked the sim and I switched to Xfinity Mobile.

OK, but now you need balance, not free, I search other method
Unlock a Phone or Device - AT&T Device Unlock Portal

This is what I used, it was free.
