I just got my Nook Color and am looking into how to go about rooting it for CM7. I checked out CM's Wiki page on it here and it mentioned using uNooter. I haven't read about this tool anywhere else and Google searches for it turn up practically nothing. Is this not the right tool to use? The forums mostly seem to mention ManualNooter, Auto-Nooter, etc. Also is it possible to flash CM7 on the internal memory and avoid using an SD card altogether?
Never heard of unooter and I've been reading theses forums since December. Auto mooter was to root the older firmware 1.0 ,1.01,and 1.1. Manualnooter is for the newer froyo firmware.
Rooting stock is not required to install CM7.
You simply need to create a Clockworkmod recovery microSD card and you can then flash CM7 (which is pre-rooted) from Clockworkmod.

Thanks. I figured this would be relatively easy compared to rooting and putting CM7 on my EVO but reading on here there seemed to be a few different approaches. Will that method allow me to flash CM7 to the eMMC, and after that point will I no longer need the SD card to boot? I ask because I don't have a card on hand and am considering backing up the contents from my phone's card and using that.

Correct.
You only need the SD to install a bootable CWM then you can flash CM7 from that. After words when CM7 is installed to eMMC you are able to use Rom Manager to install CWM to eMMC as well, so everything will be set up on the device's internal memory. SD is needed only for the initial boot of CWM to install CM7.

Thanks. From reading around it seems you can't use a phone or the Nook to mount the card and write the image, so I'll have to buy a reader and might as well get a card for the Nook at the same time. Since I'll be flashing CM7 to eMMC does it really matter if I get a class 4 or above card like many suggest? I'm not sure what's in my EVO but that is my benchmark. Class 2 seems to be what comes up in searches the most.
The general consensus it's to stick with Sandisk SD cards for the Nook. There are others that work as well but Sandisk it's pretty much a guarantee of zero issues. You can usually score an 8 GB class 4 Sandisk at Wal-mart for a Jackson.

Transcend 8 GBs have worked beautifully on all 3 NC's in my house.

I was the one that put together uNooter after being contacted by the individual that maintains the CyanogenMod wiki. They wanted a universal Nooter that would only root the device, install Superuser, ADB, RomManger, and work on all versions of the NC software. They asked that it be called uNooter. It is not released anywhere else, so that is why you did not see any mention of it on a Google search.

That information is really only relevant to running a ROM from the SD card. If you're only using the card for storage, or to get CM7 on eMMC, manufacturer and card class don't matter.

I wrote my image over USB to a card in the NC without a card reader. I've seen wiki guides saying there's a greater chance of the write getting interrupted, rendering the card unusable at least in the short term, but it worked for me. It was only when I wanted to revert the card to storage that I ended up needing a card reader. The links in my sig have a little more info about using the NC as your card reader, but you're probably better off just grabbing one.
Also, while CM7 does not require an SD card, many apps do. Your experience will be somewhat limited without one.

Great to hear directly from the source, thanks! I'm surprised more people don't point to your tool on the forums given that it's right on the CM Wiki. At this point I'm a little confused about the various approaches to do this. Does your tool install ROM Manager directly into the stock Nook interface, and then I flash from there, versus booting CWM off the SD as people mentioned earlier in the thread? Sorry if that's completely off-base.

Yeah, I thought about this as well and figured I'd want a full-time card for the device so I ordered a card with SD adapter. I figured the specs didn't matter at all for a data card but picked up a class 4 Sandisk anyway.

I received notice this past Monday that the cleaned up version of the CyanogenMod wiki was online, so not a whole lot of exposure for people to talk about it. I believe the old wiki had listed the different Auto-Nooter and Manual-Nooter that went with each software version, thus taking up a lot of space and confusion. AN and MN are more tailored to people that want to stick with the stock software, but enable full Android Market access. People that want to go from stock to CyanogenMod don’t need all the extra software that is bundled with AN and MN just to be able to flash CyanogenMod. By eliminating all the version specific software I was able to create a version that would work on all current, and hopefully future, software versions.
Yes, my versions will install Rom Manager directly into the interface. You would then allow Rom Manger to install CWM Recovery, and then you can download and install CyanogenMod from the device. You could also take a full backup of your current stock rom. Using uNooter or bootable CWM will both get you to where you want to go, it is really up to you on how you want to get there.
Instructions for installing CM7 to the eMMC using CWM on a SD card (which can later be reformatted for storage) is in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227.
GMPOWER and bigbob23: Thanks for the info, that was exactly what I needed to clear everything up. I suppose backing up the stock ROM would be useful in case I ever needed to restore it for warranty purposes or anything. I'm not sure which approach I'll go with, my SD card came today so I'll be reading over both techniques and giving one a shot!
Thanks again.
I went through the process with uNooter as outlined on the CM Wiki and it went perfectly. The only thing was I had to use SD Formatter and the earliest 0.1 version of Win32 Disk Imager to get the image to write to the SD card. Not sure if that problem is specific to Win7 64-bit but maybe I can mention it on the wiki.

I am glad that you got everything to work right. I think the problems that you might have experienced are more associated with win7 x64. My replacement laptop with win7 x64 will not be here for another two weeks for me to test it on, but in the past I have had to use Unlocker almost every time to unlock the usb drive before I could proceed with flashing using Win32 disk imager. On my current windows 7 x86 setup, I have yet had to use Unlocker to be able to flash an image with the win32 program. HERE is a post with people having problems in the past with win32 disk imager on win7 x64, they took the same path that you did with Panasonic SD Card Formatter to fix it.

If you see "Read Forever" when booting (stock) then "Yes" you have the latest firmware.
ADB after uNooter?
Above, GMPOWER mentioned ADB as one of the items uNooter installed. I've rooted with uNooter in part because *nothing* *else* I could find would actually boot on my NC and in part because I liked the idea of a relatively minimal root. I figured I could then push any apk's I wanted to add with adb.
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be working. I used "NookColor Tools -> All Settings -> Development" to enable USB debugging, but 'adb devices' shows nothing. If I plug in my G2 with CM7, adb finds it just fine, so I'm pretty sure I've got the computer side of things working. Any hints about getting the NC to play nice?
As an original Nook Color owner from its first day availability, I am now ready to make the leap to the HD+. My primary reason for this is the 8.9 inch screen which emulates "trade paperback" size which has always been my reading goal along with enhanced video.
I have put my NC through numerous iterations over the last two years plus and finally did a full conversion to Android 4.1 a few months ago bidding a permanent farewell to any remaining vestige of the BN software. As the final remaining issue for me was "reading in store" which I no longer need, it was not a difficult decision.
In perusing this forum, I appear to have run afoul of trying to determine if there is a currently viable track for complete conversion of the HD+ eMMc as I simply do not need or want the BN interface. I know full well there are rooted, sdcard, and "hybrid" variations well explained in this forum but simply cannot find or continue to overlook any mention/instruction for full internal conversion as an option.
Am I simply overlooking that info or are we not yet there? If that goal has not yet been obtained, what would be my closest non sdcard option?
I have nothing but accolades and praise for those providing us with the fruits of their efforts. My multiple and varied experiences with my NC provided a truly fascinating experinece and learning curve starting with basic rooting up through several dual boot variations and now in eMMc Jelly Bean and all of its remarkably functional glory! It is clearly continuing with the HD and the "+" and I wish to express my deepest thanks for those continuing efforts in advance.
Any reasoned advice, suggestions, and/or direction would be appreciated.
As yet there is no full replacement of the emmc. The boot loader lock that even checks system makes it very hard.

I too came from the Nook Color and have enjoyed the versatility of that device. Unfortunately B&N has locked down this device to make it more difficult to modify it. Your only two choices now is to modify stock with my CWM zips or opt for running CM10/CM10.1 from SD. You can get my CWM zips from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature.

Get the HD+ and put cm10 via sdcard on it. If you use the right sdcsard (class 4? someone will correct me if I'm wrong) and dont look back. I came from the nook color 10.1 emmc myself. I know how soul crushing it was on there. Lag, reboots, lag, poor display, lag. Did I mention lag? I'd like an emmc too, but seriously you won't notice any difference. Its an amazing tablet with cm10 on it.

I have also had the Nook Color and the Nook Tablet.. the Nook HD/HD+ are awesome. I have always choose to ditch the stock B&N expereince. Currently booting CM10.1 from mircoSD on my NookHD, thanks to some awesome work by others, and its honestly great! maybe a few tiny little lags every now and then, but nothing close to a deal breaker. And its still early... so it can only get better from here. Going HD or HD+, you won't be dissapointed.
Actually this is strange that we dont have still bootloader lock hack. All tech things that i seen on xda forum are ulocked. And now some BN can lock it
I want help but i dont have knowledge for this stage. And with other words i need it too (run custom rom from emmc)..

Thanks to all for your comments, updates, and suggestions. I opted to take the "easy way out" this time around and d/l n2a's $19.99 version for the HD+ and installed it on a 32 GB card. Oddly enough, could not get it to run on a new Sandisk Class 10 but it ran on an older class 4 or 6 card that I had used for converted film storage with my NC. Any idea why that happened?
BTW, when formatting a card for the HD+ should we use FAT32 or NTSC?
It is great to have a full JB interface back!
Not at all enamored of the current BN interface which I hope now to leave alone and eventually replace when full eMMc access is achieved. If JB could be made "ready for prime time" on the NC, then I am sure that it is just a matter of time until one of you has a full blown "Eureka" moment and shows the way to a full and total conversion of the HD+.
Will keep you all up-to-date regarding my experiences with the N2A setup.

This quote at this thread is about SD card formating:
For first time install only (you will need 4G or bigger sdcard, smaller ones are not supported and not tested):
gunzip cwm image and write it to your sdcard (entire sdcard not just one partition of it), use either dd on Linux/MacOS or Win32 Image Writer for those impaired by Windows.

Not all cards are created equal. The recommended card for running a ROM is SanDisk class 4. Others may or may not work well.
And it does not matter what format you had on the card originally before you burned the image to the card. It gets overwritten.
But for using an SD with stock, the card should be formatted Fat32 or ExFat. NTSC does not work.

Hey all,
I got a Nook HD+ a few days ago and started doing some of the things listed here on the forums. One of the issues that myself and others have in the Android Development forum (which, because I am a new user, I cannot post to) is that the ROM will randomly reboot. The file /proc/last_kmsg was requested, so I'm posting it here in the hopes that it helps track down the issue (attached).
The best I can tell from that is that it seems to be freaking out about an I/O error and then losing track of the filesystem.
The SD card I'm using is the SanDisk Ultra 32GB Class 10 card.
Let me know if I need to add any other information.

Unfortunately this is kind of a known problem, which is Sandisk class 10 cards (U1 really I think?) do not work stably, I have one myself that's like this. (actually they are hit and miss, works great for some, does not work for others including myself).
Class4 is what bullet proof.
I get these io errors on my U1 sandisk card even in stock, seems to be something hw-related.

Hello verygreen, I have a sandisk micro-sd same as yours (IIRC) and what I did was to replace it with another. The newer sandisk u1 that I got doesn't throw any I/O errors but still occassionally reboots with all your kernels except than with the 12/31 one (even though I haven't checked it as extensively as the others).
So what's with that? Do you think the instability isssues we're encountering are at least partly due to the kernel?

Thanks for responding. I'll look into getting a different SD card. I mainly got this one because it was on sale at Best-Buy and with the ~30 minutes of research (I really, really wanted to do some toying with my Nook that night), seemed to be the best one.
I'll also take a look at the "working SD card" thread and respond if I have any extra info.
Hi, I might have found a reason why HD+ reboots when using CM10.
The reason is WiFi (or its driver),
when WiFi goes to sleep it sometimes cannot reactivate the driver, well Android tries to load this driver, but fails for some reason and this results in kernel panic.
So workaroud for it is to disable WiFi sleep in Wifi advanced settings (make it always on or something), and turn off manually if needed.
However after the tablet wakes up there is a chance it still fails to load a driver and fail miserably when you try to activate WiFi manually.
But until wifi is off, it will not reboot.
I am using:
-0108 build of CM10
-sd boot image ver 3
-SanDisk 64gb class-10 (UHS1)
This has nothing to do with sd card though, cause people with Class 4 getting reboots as well.
I think removing Wifi driver from CM10 kernel and re-building it from the stable source should fix this problem. Sorry don't have kmsg logs, will attach later.
p.s cannot post to dev, so posting here.
Thanks!
SD Card Install Setup
I'm trying to get CM10 on my Nook HD+. I downloaded and installed the img file (#3) fine and put in in the Nook and CWM came up and followed the instruction for the install. 16 gig Sandisk class 4. It created the 4 partitions. I then poped out the card and put it in my Windows machine. The boot partition came up with 100+ meg and couldn't see the other partition unless I used the Partition software. In the notes it says to copy the cm*.zip into the SD10CARD partition..I CAN'T SEE IT IN WINDOWS? I tried to install Andriod tool kit (adb) with no luck.. Says it can't find the Android devices.... Would this work any better with Apple or Ubunto. Ideas?

Yup, a Windows limitation. You can use mini-tools partition app for windows to see them, or better yet, Ubuntu, which will identify all partitions and allow you to transfer zips to the CM10SDCARD partition.

Ideas?

No no no. For copying CM10 zip to SD you must do it over adb and your nook connected to PC (win, mac, linux). I seen that many guides here lacks this info and this confuse users. Basically you do it this way:
Make SD card for CWM
Boot up you nook to cwm
On cwm mount SD card
Attach with usb cable nook to pc
Copy CM10 zip to sd (look to command example). You can copy additional zips on this step too (GAPPS or other needed stuff) After copy you can remove cable
Reboot command on CWM
You Boot to fresh CWM
Hi All,
I have a Nook HD, recently purchased and then updated to BN 2.0.6 firmware during the BN registration process. I used the sdcard-cwm-early5.img.gz as referenced in Verygreen's post here to create a bootable CWM SD. I then installed the CM 10.1 build posted in thread by Bokbokban here. Finally, I installed latest gapps from goo.im. All seems to be pretty good, excepting that sometimes, seemingly randomly, the device will reboot itself, at which time it bypasses the SD during boot and goes straight for the stock BN rom on the emmc.
Any ideas on how to proceed? I haven't seen a pattern in the reboots yet, so I am not sure what may or may not be causing them. While I'm not exactly a newb with all that is involved with rooting/flashing various android devices (I own 5 of them), I could use some guidance on how to troubleshoot or diagnose problems like this.
I am confused. You used an HD+ image from verygreen and an HD ROM from bokbokan. How did you make that work? They should not have worked.
But if you really only used HD files, the reboot problem is probably the brand and class of the SD you used. It needs to be SanDisk class 4. We have that problem a lot on the HD+. It is cause by a kernel panic when trying to write to SD.
The solution is to get a better SD or use bokbokan's new Hybrid SD setup that puts /data on internal memory so SD speed does not matter.

Thanks for your prompt reply. To be clearer, I did not use the HD+ image, but I did use the CWM image Verygreen posted, 'sdcard-cwm-early5.img.gz', as that version supported using CWM to read .zip's from /emmc (in other words, those that were downloaded via BN stock browser).
At the risk of sounding like I am second-guessing you, I think it's worth noting that I had no trouble with many things related to writing to the SD card: writing the CWM image, booting into CWM from the SD, writing the CM10.1 image onto the card, booting from the 10.1 rom, etc... So if it is, as you say, the card having write issues and causing a kernel panic, I'm wondering how I can prove that. I will check the kernel logs when I get home.
I'm using a Sandisk 'ultra' class 10 16gb... I get that 'class 10' generally means 'crappy for small random write requests', but I've had good luck with this particular card on other platforms that are sensitive to consistency of write speeds (G2, Nook Color). However, I'll try a class-4 Sandisk per your suggestion.
Follow-up question: I can't seem to find a solid guide that shows how to install to emmc... is that a new frontier for this device? Is it just that nobody has bothered, or is there a problem with original bootloader supporting that?

The internal bootloader is locked down pretty good. Some day someone will be able to break it, but for now no one has.

I would like to turn my Nook into a simple android tablet for web surfing etc and have tried to find any coherent install instructions with download links that still work but so far failed. Given how old the Nook hardware is I do not want to spend money on any ready made image.
I do not care so much what flavor of ROM to use as long as Web browser, Youtube and the Android marketplace works so I can install some basic apps.
Anybody that can point me to a good guide?

In search of the same thing. I've got the BNRV200A what about yourself?
Same boat here.
Found out factory reset. Power on, let go and (almost?) immediately hold power and "n" for about 6 seconds like I had read elsewhere.
I end up letting them go before the "read anywhere" text disappears.

All CyanogenMod seems to be down, in favor of LineageOS?
Not sure if I need ClockworkModRecovery (CWMR) depending on which OS I want.
I see Froyo mentioned a lot, but not sure if those sources are old as well.
That being the android version 2.2 that matches what the Barnes & Noble OS is built on top of.
Found a good guide, old or not, that goes through those and ideas. I'll probably stick to SD card installation when possible and not the eMMC route.

It seems to get anything started we need adb access to install CWMR in order to install other OSes, and for that, one would need the Windows drivers for the Nook Color: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882751
So I am out of luck for Macs. adb root responds "Error: no devices found".
After a successful adb, some commands: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078855
If I get that working, I would continue with the Rec images form the instructions in the CM13 thread, and somehow with LineageOS files. The CyanogenMod (CM) file seems easier to picture without having completed the process yet, as that is simply an image file to write directly to the SD card.
I guess LineageOS would install from zip which I'm guessing is what I need CWMR
A nice vanilla ASOP / Android install might be recommended as well, as that seems to already be ready into a format for burning directly to the SD card, and for the Nook Color to boot off of without any internal modifications or previous PC preparations: https://www.lifewire.com/turn-nook-color-to-android-tablet-2740672

I found a YouTube video today that included all three links that seemed to be dead everywhere you go in order to put CyanogenMod on nook color. I followed the directions downloaded the links and what do you know? I now have a nook color Android. Why not just post a link here. I've been trying to find everything needed.
I'm looking for CM10 or 11 + the appropriate Gapps. anyone have any luck finding links that aren't dead?
I would really like any information on this as well. I have an early ROM on my Nook Color already, but I think it's an eMMC.

cm-11-20160815-NIGHTLY-encore.zip seems to be available at https://archive.org/download/cmarchive_nighlies .

What I used, back in 2016...
I've got a NookColor and had successfully rooted the NookColor (Encore) with CM. I haven't really touched it since then, but I wanted to see if I could use it for anything else, or get a small OS on it to use it as a Calendar, Weather and such, or see about using the screen with a Raspberry PI 3b or a MiSTer and such for any other projects.
Here's a link to what I used, I don't remember the process (If I can find the links, I'll post them). However, here are files I have and used.

and acclaim if you have a nook tablet
https://web.archive.org/web/20161224225308/https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=acclaim
BUT! i would not suggest flashing gapps as it basically makes it unusably slow, use apkpure or micro g. i would also suggest enabling stage fright video in the build.prop, less battery drain on youtube/youtube vanced.
Did anyone get this working? I have the BNRV200A running Nook 1.4.3 OS. I haven't found a way to get the SD Card to boot to recovery to install CM. All the CWM .img files don't get it to boot to recovery, only to the normal Nook OS.

Yes I am running kitkat right now.
Bnrv200a? I'm not 100% sure if that's a different model or just a typo, but the nook color eyeballer sd image is here,
SD: http://tinyw.in/0Vw
Emmc: https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2746421&d=1400215845
And the nook tablet here,
SD: (little bit more complicated than the nook color) https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583
Emmc: http://www.mediafire.com/download/0f5fjkjvxp1hga0/flashable_CWM_6.0.4.5(2).zip
Make sure to flash the eyeballer image with win32diskimager.
Then here is a link (windows) that will show you how to restore the SD card to its original state after flashing the eyeballer image with win32diskimager

Yes, BNRV200A. It's a Nook Color. I tried the 1 gb eyeballer and can't get it to recovery boot. Not sure if I tried the Emmc, but I think so. Will look at when I get home. Using a 16 gb SanDisk sd. Thanks so much.

Oh, it is the BNRV200A, I thought it was just Bnrv200 :silly: I'm not sure why its not working, what speed is it? I was using a class 10. And after you flash the image the computer should that the SD card is smaller than it really is. And you flash the Emmc after you boot into the clockworkmod SD image, it installs on the internal storage.
Edit: sorry, it's been forever since I rooted my nook. The first install you are supposed to flash this, https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2787369&d=1402239353, to the SD card, and put any roms or gapps on the same SD card, the image on the SD card will automatically flash whichever cm rom you put on the SD card plus gapps if you put them on there, which I do not recommend, because it shows down the device a lot

So I tried flashing this and the eyeballer 1gb and neither would boot into recovery or install anything. Just boots to Nook OS again. Were you using Nook OS 1.4.3 when you did the flash/installs?
SD card is actually 16 gb, class 2, Samsung. Only thing that has booted into recovery was the img/zip here, but it was not for Nook Color, and the size limit after flash was 90 mb.

Oh, ?um, try a class 4 or above.
