Changing the IMEI number - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I own a Galaxy S I9000 with Slimbean 4.2.2 for a few years already.
I am in another country now for a few days and I received a message saying that my phone's IMEI is not registered and will ban me from using their service unless I pay a tax.
If I were going to stay for a Little longer I wouldn't really mind to pay for it, but since I am leaving in one week it seems to be quite stupid.
However, I tried to slve it the legal way by going into the office, but I won't be able to do so until Monday because it's closed
I have a backup of my efs folder for a few years and a new one I did today. i also checked the permissions and the groups it belongs to so I quite know what I am doing. I tried renaming the nv_data.bin and bak files so the phone wouldn't find them and restarted just to get a generic IMEI number but the phone didn't register on the network. I know that depending on the operator the phone might register or not, so in this case it's not doing it.
My question is how could I change the IMEI number. I tried my own methods but don't seem to be working ok. I am not sure if the phone won't just work if the IMEI number in the file and the motherboard itself don't match.
I know changing an IMEI is an ilegal process and I am unsure if this is against the rules so feel free to close the thread in case it is. I have no plans on doing ilegal stuff with it, mainly because it's my own phone
Any ideas?
Thank you.

This sound me like a scam.... : (
Since you pay to use the SIM card from that carrier, doesn't matter what phone IMEI you are using as long as that phone is unlocked for that carrier...

A scam can be possible. Altho it depends on the country you're in.. Also i woudnt reccommend it if you're there on a holiday of some sort.

Hi
Thank you.
No, it's not a scam. I confirmed it. And my phone has already been blocked.
The reason this is done, as far as I know it's because they want to prevent phones from other countries being sold here
Can I do what I proposed some how?
Thanks!

Hi
Thanks xsenman I am a bit affraid to do a full EFS restore since my pone is working properly, there's nothing wrong with it, just that it's IMEI has been blacklisted.
I tried to use now my existing EFS folder and using a nv_data.bin file from a friend so the IMEI would change. I tried setting right permissions and the right group, but the pone seems to always change those on next restart and sets only rwx for owner. I also tried to make a copy of the nv_data.bin of my friend to .nv_data.bak too
Any other idea

Hi
actually I did follow that but not all of it since it asks you to restore a efs you can get in the thread
However I didn't want to risk too much since my EFS is fine. And when I get back to my country everything will work fine because I can use my own IMEI. But since I am now in a country that has blocked my IMEI I am trying to use just a friend's nv_data.bin file in my phone.
However even if I set the same permissions and the group that you talk about in the thread it won't work for this file. This is what I tried already, sorry if I didn't mention it before
If I set 777 and root group to on my friend's file (as my original nv_data.bin has by default for some reason, since I think the right ones are 644 radio:radio) then the file permissions won't change in next reboot but still it will give me a generic IMEI number
If I set 644 root:root as indicated on your post on my friend's file it will change permissions on next reboot as commented in the earlier post
If I set 644 radio:radio to my own nv_data.bin file or 777 root:root as it's by default for some reason, it works., but again, it's my own file
So could it be that the phone knows that my friend's nv_data.bin file is from another phone? The same settings don't seem to work for a file that is not mine
Also, to let you know I am using Slimbean 4.2.2, I can't flash my phone to GB at the moment.
Thank you!

First and foremost, the moment you want to Flash, the rule of the thump is you should have a EFS folder backed-up somewhere else ( external SD card or PC or cloud)
so IF you do have a backup, than overwriting it would not be a problem as you can easily restore it with your backup ( this applies to any an all files and folders in the Internal phone memory)
if you are swapping IMEI the files inside the efs folder, nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 has to be overwritten. swap may not last as the moment you flash again, they will be conflict between IMEI in the Nand memory and IMEI in your folder when booting the new ROM also note networks will reject two phones with same IMEI trying to connect to their network
the normal steps should be overwrite, (not replace) than save, than quit all using the editing app than reboot
if it fails to stick, one way is
Copy Paste EFS folder with root explorer (meaning overwrite it) , after paste , save and quit using menu, power down phone and reboot into recovery and wipe cache before rebooting....this worked for some
you can always fix permissions in CWM too and read this for better understanding.
Take Note, Altering IMEI is illegal in most countries

Hi xsenman
Thanks for your replies. Sorry if I couldn't reply earlier.
I actually renamed my original nv_data.bin to nv_data.bina and nv_data.bin.md5 to nv_data.bin.md5a so I could put my friend's nv_data.bin and then set the right permissions and group. I thought this would have been enough but it didn't work.
Replacing the complete EFS folder "scares" me a bit just in case I get to mess something important. I guess this is because I really know that the efs folder is neccesary for the pone to work fine and I am affraid to mess something up. Even if I got a backup (Actually I got more tan one, since I did my first backup last year, and a newer one 4 days ago)
I asked my friend to give me a copy of his complete EFS folder but apparently he doesn't know to.
Thanks for your help.

Hi
Yes. I forgot about that one but I looked at it before. I wanted to ask you why do I need it and why can't I use my own since the important files are nv_data.bin only?
Sorry if I am making a mess with this explanation. I forgot to tell you that when I renamed my original nv_data.bin, nv_data.bin.md5, nv_data.bak and nv_data.bak.md5, I pasted my friend's nv_data.bin file but I didn't paste his .md5 file since I don't have it. When I restarted the pone the MD5 file got generated.
Shouldn't the dummy EFS folder only be used when somebody knows that it's EFS is corrupted but the nv_data.bin is fine?

that's what I noted from your first post as such I emphasized it, you only used one file, it should be two, that uploaded folder contain files from a broken i9000, so its more or less original , you can use only the two files in it. as i understand, you only want to use for a few days.

Hello
Oki, so since I don't want to mess up much with the EFS partition on my pone. Can I just overwrite nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 with the ones from my friend and then set the permissions and group?
I will ask him to send me the .md5 since he only sent me nv_data.bin
Would this work?
Thank you.

It should work, just overwrite files, and reboot after save and exit in menu, but if both of you are in the same network, both can be banned, if network decides to do so.

Thanks.
My friend will send me the file in a few hours. Once I try I will let you know.
I know about being banned but he's in my country and I am in another one at the momento. So nothing should happen.
His IMEI number will get banned in this country too after a few days. They are about to ban cheap Nokia pone I have too.
They just ban any phone that hasn't been bought in this country unless you pay that tax
Thanks!

Hello
I tried to add the nv_data.bin.md5 file from my friend. After restartng the pone I had my original IMEI instead of the original one or the generic one. So I think it's because it tried to restore the backup from nv_data.bak and nv_data.bak.md5
So, besides pasting my friend's nv_data.bin and nv:data.bin.md5 I tried to copy these files as nv_data.bak and nv_data.bak.md5 but after restarting I got a generic IMEi
I will try to ask my friend to send me nv_data.bak and nv_data.bak.md5 so I will replace:
nv_data.bin
nv_data.bin.md5
nv_data.bak
nv_data.bak.md5
with the ones from my friend and see what happens.
Thank you.!!

[APP] Product Code Fix *Beta 0.1.1* (12-21-2010)

Here's a quick app I made to easily change your product code back to ATT.
I plan to add more later on for different providers like TMB, etc.
I just wanted to see if this was of any use...

INFO:
It's written in C# using Visual Studio and just a warning... there isn't really any error checking.
I played with it a few times and it worked fine(but we all know how far working for one person goes).
How to use:
You need to be rooted!!!
Unzip to wherever and run Product Code Fix.exe
Then just follow 1, 2, 3.
SOURCE:
There really isn't a need for the source as it just runs the corresponding scripts.
But if you want to tweak anything just look through the scripts.
I didn't really comment them at all, but you should have a vague idea of what's going on just by looking at them. The only part that you can't tweak is the actual writing of the ATT to the nv_data.bin. For that, this is all I've got:
Code:
private void fixbutton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
FileStream BinaryFile = new FileStream("efs_backup/nv_data.bin", FileMode.Open, FileAccess.ReadWrite);
BinaryWriter f = new BinaryWriter(BinaryFile);
f.Seek(0x18800f, SeekOrigin.Begin);
f.Write(0x545441);
f.Seek(0x188021, SeekOrigin.Begin);
f.Write(0x545441);
f.Close();
MessageBox.Show("File changed successfully!");
}
TO DO:
Add list of other providers.
UPDATES:
0.1.1
Added "busybox chown 1001:1001 /efs/nv_data.bin" to restore scripts
If you have tweaked the scripts and would like to upload altered versions, please do!
*If you own a different phone (Vibrant, I9000, etc.) and would like to help me out in adding more providers, please pm me!*

many custom roms will change your imei (device id) to a generic #.
This isn't so much a problem as flashing to stock generally fixes the issue by restoring your original IMEI (which would be needed for warranty purposes).
The problem some have encountered is a particular rom flashing not only changing the IMEI but changing the product code that is embedded in the nv_data files. Even a restore to stock was not restoring the original imei's or nv_data files (product codes).
FYI if the automated method doesn't work for you try 1 of 2 manual methods:
Using Just your phone with Market Apps (PC and ADB not needed):

THIS DOES NOT FIX IMEI!!!!!!
This utility fixes the product code (changes your phone to AT&T product code instead of Korea Telecom).
Don't confuse one issue with another. Yes it is possible to f-up your IMEI and the only fix is to back up your nv_data.bin and restore. Product code does NOT equal IMEI.
Flashing stock will not restore IMEI or product code. Your nv_data.bin persists across all flashes with minor changes - there is no way to restore it to original except from backup.

Seriously...not sure what is lost in translation.
For myself...and it appears at least for a handful of others repairing the nv_data.bin file which restores your product code following the instructions contained within the fixes is what allowed the original IMEI's to BE RESTORED.
Sorry but you can't convince me that what i watched happen with my device and fix didn't happen.
If fixing the nv_data file and product code isn't what restored my original IMEI please explain how i now how my original IMEI vs. the generic 004XXXXXX (note: i didn't have original backups of efs of nv_data)
So in summary
for me RESTORING THE PROPER PRODUCT CODE via repairing and replacing the damaged nv_data files is what allowed for my IMEI product code to be restored. Maybe this won't work on all builds for some reason but i can POSITIVELY CONFIRM THIS WORKED ON MY 1007 build Captivate.
PS -- here is the disclaimer i added in my thread in response to a similar post by alphadog there:
*DISCLAIMER*
have already had one person post a response that this thread was misleading and stating that:
This thread is misleading. There is no way to restore IMEI if you didn't back up your nv_data.bin before it got messed up.

I have seen other users make this claim as well, however, they are either mistaken or what i experienced was a complete anomoly.
I had never backed up my efs folder or nv_data files prior to them being messed up (i didn't know they were there and had never used root explorer to view them until i had to research a fix). The first thing i did was use a hex editor to look at my nv_data.bin and its bak(s) and in fact none of them were good. They all contained wrong product code.
So the process i described was conducted without any previously backed up original nv_data.bin or nv_data.bak files.
I started with:
wrong IMEI
wrong product code
totally botched nv_data files with no backup of original unmolested efs folder or nv_data files
I ended up with
Restored original IMEI
Correct Product Code
Healthy/Correct nv_data files that i immediately backed up in multiple locations.
So if you didn't back up your original untainted efs or nv_data files and this fix doesn't work to restore your original imei and product code then allow me to apologize in advance for "misleading" you and trying to assist with your problem by posting what did in fact work for me.
Thank you for the fix. I've tried the other methods and would either not work, or they would screw up my imei #. I never backed up my efs folder and was lucky enough that it never changed my imei, only had that problem when trying the other fixes. I was able to repair my imei by making a backup of the .imei file(not imei folder) in the efs folder. Then using root explorer went to my efs folder, opened the .imei file in text editor, then replaced the generic imei with my original, saved and exit. Then I used terminal emulator, "su", "busybox chown 1001:1001 efs/.imei" without quotes. That is what worked for me to fix my imei.
For some good reason, I have never experienced any issue with either imei or product ID. Once I saw a thread about this, I used the method to see what my phone product ID looks like, and to my surprise it was the same as original (I do flash lots of roms). But one thing I don't do is 'ODIN one click to jfs6 stock' by DG. Instead I use the 3button fix ODIN to stock6 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439.
Therefore I don't know if DG version of ODIN 1 click to stock has anything to do with the imei or product ID messing up?
If anyone of you who had this issue or experiencing this issue, I don't know if you tried the 3button fix ODIN to stock or not to see if that fixes your issue with product ID and imei. (I didn't backup the original rom that came with captivate and I'm using 3button fix ODIN to stock and 1 click ODIN to do master clear).

I had no idea that file was even there... I've never needed to use this fix, but I thought people could use an easy app.
If altering that file changes your imei... That would make things a lot easier... But also would be easy for imei "spoofing" and I believe altering your imei is illegal...
EDIT: I wonder what that file is actually used for... Theres no way that they would just leave your imei out in the open like that. From the 15 min of research I've done while on lunch, your imei is stored on some kinds of OTP (One Time Programmable) chip. So that file is probably just reading that number from somewhere (like decrypting it from the nv_data.bin). So my conclusion is that altering that file is only a temp fix. Still need to do more research though.

Im not sure why it worked, but I had the generic imei after trying one of the other fixes and after altering that file my imei is correct now. Also we never really have our imei changed? Just the file on our phones reporting it incorrectly?

[Q] Convert contacts2.db to .vcf

Hi, I was using CM7 and yesterday morning when I woke up, it was stuck in bootloop at startup screen. I took a nandroid backup and cleared factory data options and installed new CM7.1 version (clearing cache or dalvik cache or reinstalling CM7 didnt help, hence had to clear factory data)
Now I have already used unyaffs to get the extracted contact2.db and contacts2.db-shm and contacts2.db-wal files... however pasting them in the com.android.providers.contacts\databases folder (using root explorer) gives me only 11 contacts instead of the 300+ it is supposed to have
I opened the contacts2.db file in notepad and I can see references to names and numbers in whatever sqlite format it is supposed to be... so my simple question now is.. is there any way to get the .db file to .vcf format or any other format usable by my phone ?
P.S. - No I did not use the google syncing feature or kies backup
Guys, some help on this... still without my contacts here..!
I cant post external links so google "convert contacts2.db to vcard", the first result will be this thread, the next three are the answer you're looking for.
Right... thanks! Unfortunately, the 3 links are for a ruby script and I have no experience with ruby... is that the only way ?
Put your contacts2.db into the same folder as contacts2-to-vcard.rb
install ruby, open command prompt and execute these lines
Code:
gem install sqlite3
gem install vpim
(path to contacts2-to-vcard.rb)/contacts2-to-vcard.rb > contacts.vcf
if you get this error
contacts2-to-vcard.rb:43:in `+': can't convert NoMethodError into String (TypeError)
open the .rb file in a text editor, go to line 43 and change it to
$stderr.print ""
I ran into this when I used it. after you edit the file run it again and you should have your .vcf file sitting in the same folder as the script file and contacts2.db

After some serious research on the web you are my true and only hero.
Sort of....
The only thing is, I don't get the vcard file. I just get the cmd flashing real quick listing my contacts. There is no way for me trying to time my screenshot button and get all my contacts. Screenshot: i.imgur.com/oXCye.jpg
I'm really new to this kind of thing.... I just put Cyanogenmod on my phone and damn god do I regret it. I have no idea what I'm doing. My backup didn't backup so now I'm just gonna have to live with myself. But I kinda do wanna have my contacts back. And I'm really proud of myself getting this cmd thingy flash before my eyes
anyways... what's next?
Thanks in advance
E: Ok Guys.... Problem solved.
If you open the File with Ruby CUI it will just flash real quick, but if you open it in cmd the list will just show and it won't disappear.
Then the > contacts.vcf part behind it and done.
Now I understand what I did and I fully understand you comment, and I feel stupid.
Thanks again

Thank You!

Don't mean to be mean, but if you haven't heard of the command prompt, perhaps installing a custom *Linux*-based ROM on your phone isn't the thing to do for you, until you learn the ropes a bit.
I managed to run the script, it also produces some output BUT I for every contact I keep getting the same error message :
Code:
Adding address failed: undefined method `to_str' for ["", "", nil, "", "", "", ""]:Array
Did anybody else get this message, too ?
Any idea what to do about this ?
Thanks !

Found this thread when searching for a way to convert a .db to a .vcf or any other way to import my .db contacts to my phone. I had performed a contacts backup using Huwaei All Backup, then rooted my phone and installed a custom rom, of course, not thinking that I was getting rid of probably the only backup/restore app that uses that filetype.
My solution was fairly simple. I found the All Backup apk but it of course wouldn't install on the phone, so I installed Bluestacks android emulator on the pc and was able to install All Backup on that. I then had to install dropbox on Bluestacks to allow me to move my .db to the virtual sd card, fired up All backup, performed a restore using my .db, then on Bluestacks used an app called Go Contacts to backup all contacts, which created a .vcf file, which I copied over to dropbox, copied over to my phones sd card, and used Go Contacts to restore.
More complicated than it should have been? Yes.
From now on, my contacts can stay synced with Gmail.
But overall the process took about 10 min including all the installs and whatnot, which isn't so bad considering I figured I was going to have to manually input my contacts one by one.
Hopefully someone looking to import a .db file into their phone's contacts will find this 'method' useful.

[ H E L P ] EFS folder and files needed!!! Phone bricked!!!

Hi! Anyone can upload EFS folder \efs) ? You can attach as zip file. Doesn't matter, it's important to be there all files.
I bricked my phone and I want to unbrick. Please, anyone who is experimented, please help me!
Best Regards,
Cristian Silaghi
NO one found this folder on the galaxy mini....the phone can turn on or not?? if yes u can unbrick...
efs folders are unique you have just removed your imei now if you don't have your own backup nothing can be done
now your mobile is a mp4 player if anyone uploads his efs file his mobile will also be a mp4player

Just because you're a Recognized Contributor, that doesn't mean you can bull****.
That is not true! Admit it, you don't know how pull the /efs ot from your phone
Like you said, /efs folder contains alot of things that are unique for each phone (WiFi MAC adress, IMEI, product code and what not), so we can't just give someone our /efs. Even if we could, the way of pulling those files from the phone are not known to me.
Wish we knew a way to backup it, when something like this happens - you just put the backup and away you go
just because am an rc that doesn't mean am bullying
nothing difficult in backing up efs file just go to /efs and copy those files to your sdcard and they will be backed up
but efs is visible only in operator specific models in normal phones imei is hardcodded in the mobile
mine galaxy s is of at&t and I can see the efs folder, prior of flashing roms on it I did a backup of that folder
and sometimes it got deleted then I just need to copy them back
can't see on original galaxy s of my friend
the thing is one imei cannot be used in two mobile there can be many conflicts and some also related to laws
only one sim can be used at a time on a single imei
that's why I said mp4player but you can still try to share your efs files if it works then just keep it else delete it
op if you have your operator specific firmware and it contains an efs.rfs file then you may have the possibility of getting back your imei
just try it, may work

Things on Galaxy S and on our mini are a little bit different for that /efs matter, because nvdata.bin is in devblock5 or something like that, an on Galaxy S it's in a different place. Strange, but it is that way, i tried all the Galaxy S tutorials to make a backup and none of them worked.
And yeah, you cant just copy the folder since that will **** up th permissions and then the files are almost useless.
Yeah, he has a great MP4 now, unfortunately :/
I know imei is unique, thats why i said ''if we could give our efs''
just copying the efs files works great for me
I never changed permission of efs files
and had done it three times by just copying
If you distroy your IMEI becouse of bml/efs you can repair it with JTAG. Write full dump then repair its IMEI (to be the one from you stiker). Generaly this is a Service job becouse you dont't have the necessary tools.
i don't have this /efs folder, but i still can browse internet, call my friends, do a SMS, play music. Just like a normal phone do.

if you cant see that doesn't mean you don't have efs
it is just that you cannot see it like you cannot see bootloader, kernel etc.

I need some help. EFS empty folder and no backup

Hi, Im Penny and Im from venezuela.
I just got an Galaxy Note, a friend gave it to me, but the problem is it cant accept SIM card.
I have read a lots of guides and stuff, but neither my friend or I have any efs files backup.
In settings there is no Bandbase (unknow), Android version is 2.3.5 and kernel is 2.6.35.7-N7000XXKJ4-CL641703 [email protected] #2
So, i read something about rooting and stuff, I already did, but there IS NO FILES in efs folder. And there is no IMEI neither
when i do *#06#
I tried putting a stock rom, but there still the problem there. I read in a forum a guy that someone gave him some
Galaxy Note efs files, he restore them and it works. So i really dont know what to do.
Can some give me some help and give me efs files and see if I can repair this? I really need this because im planning to selling this (because i need the money).
Thank you and sorry for my pretty bad english.
** Edit: TO THE MODS:
Note: If this post breaches any rules, please remove (I'm learning bout this)
I am having the same problem. If anyone have the /efs files, please send to me as well.
** I am able to use the hex editor, only will change it back to my original IMEI, not going to use other people IMEI.
TO THE MODS:
Note: If this post breaches any rules, please remove my post as well. tq..
No one in the right mind is going to upload their efs folder containing their imei and serials and addresses
It is possible to change imei but I suggest you don't do it as it is highly illegal and carries a prison sentence, but if you try then start with a hex editor and look inside the nv_data.bin - if you can edit it only edit it to your original imei or that's where you run the risk of being bummed by some big steroid infested guy in the showers.
TO THE MODS:
If this post breaches any rules then please remove it asap

[I9000] No Imei, no service on ICS custom roms

Hi there guys, I'm pretty new to all that custom rom stuff etc. so pls don't blame me for being newbish
I've been using a CF rooted I9000 with Android 2.3.3 for quite a while now, so I thought it's time for something new.
So I tried to update my old 2.3.3 firmare (CF rooted) to a new ICS rom.
First I tried it with Slim ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488096
Tried it with semaphore kernel first. It actually worked quite fine but I couldn't get any signal and apparently my IMEI is gone and aswell there is no correct modem installed as it says "unknown baseband version".
I also tried to flash CM9 instead with the build in kernel, but still no IMEI and no service.
Also tried to manually install this modem: radio-Cm-7-GalaxyS-JVU-signed.zip , but still no change and still "unknown baseband version".
I'm located in Germany using O2 , any other suggestions for modems?
Any suggestions how I get my service back to work on Slim ICS?
If not, how do I get my old system back? I made a nandroid backup but apparently the new CWM Recovery version is not compatible with my nandroid backup from the old system. I guess I have to flash everything back to stock with Odin and get the old CF root again, then I should probably be able to restore my nandroid backup.
Still it would be awesome if I get Slim ICS to work.
Would appreciate any help
This is such a common problem.
Problem:- lost my IMEI or changed on upgrading
Solution:
1) Download Root Explorer from Play Store and use it to
2) Search you internal SD card for sdcard/backup/efs
3) Copy nv_data.bin, nv_data.bin.md5 and nv.log paste them into /efs in your Phone memory
4) Reboot to get back your original IMEI
or
If you don't have the EFS backup, you can start from the beginning.. ODIN back to a stock samsung rom and root:
JVU
Mirror from Samfirmware: http://hotfile.com/dl/140301534/be88...U_OXA.rar.html
password: samfirmware.com
CF-Root= http://download.chainfire.eu/132/CF-...etrieve_file=1
after rooting, backup your EFS folder to your pc in case you lose your IMEI number again.
Flash your custom rom.
If you lose IMEI number just follow the instructions above to fix it without having to start from the beginning. Hope this helps you.:victory:
thx for the detailed instructions for the common problem^^
Still I wonder why that happens so often and why I haven't read about backing up my EFS in any instructions of Custom Rom (well I haven't seen a lot anyway...)
Shouldn't it be possible to export the EFS folder out of the nandroid backup? Cause I'm pretty sure I didn't back up that folder...
Anyway, if I got my IMEI back, do you think my "no service" problem will automatically be fixed aswell or is that a whole different problem?
I'll try to recover my IMEI when I'm back home but I guess I'll have to recover the stock one.
I still should have the stock rom data files somewhere so I guess it shouldnt be a problem to return to stock.
Sometimes the custom roms can create the EFS backup without you doing so, just check and see.
Anyway, once you get your IMEI back the "no service" problem should be fixed. They normally go together. I didn't know about this problem and had to start over from stock when it happened to me. Now I have an EFS backup folder in my computer in case it ever happens again. :silly:
getting slightly pissed off now...
There actually is a backup folder of EFS, but...
Tried it with ES file Explorer and File Manager, both should be able to gain root access but somehow it doesn't work. Don't wanna buy Root explorer...
Then I switched back to CM9 and noticed that there's no file explorer at all... This is getting annoying.
I'm might just switch back to stock, it's easier than trying to figure out how those custom roms messed up my system
EDIT:
Ok I managed to install Root explorer, the problem is that is says I don't have enough space in my /efs folder to replace it with my backup efs files. There seems to be 12.42Mb used and only 80k free in that folder...

As I told you I couldn't overwrite the files in the efs folder as my backup efs data files wouldn't fit into the new efs folder. Looks like this is a problem that hasn't occured to often when you never heard about it^^
Well anyway thx for the link to your collection of solutions, very helpful, should be sticky.
Had to go back to my stock 2.3.3 anyway, I'll try to flash to 2.6 first now, then CM9, then Slim ICS, maybe that works better
Just flash a 2.3.6 and then ICS.. it doesn't matter if you flash a 2.3.3 before

Finally a good solution, it helped me. thanks
So I just followed this guide now: thehelptimes com how-to-install-android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-on-galaxy-s-i9000
It basically says you have to go from 2.3.6 , same what you guys said
I used the SGSICS Rom now and this is working perfectly.
After that I changed to Slim ICS which is working now also correctly.
So everything is fine now I guess, kind of time consuming though^^

hello Sir ,
Can You give Me Clear Gide . I Am Not Understand It . Please help Me .
It is a bug in the rom and in my opinion with the modem, try upgrading to Jelly Bean
Check your imei number (in settings) if it is beginning with 0, then do the steps below )))
If you want signal, go back to 2.3.6, copy your EFS folder (from system) to your sd (with root explorer), install that rom, which you need, then copy your EFS folder from your SD to system, overwrite every file, that already exists (with root explorer again)(if you can't copy the files to system, press the R/W button) You need root for the whole process!!!
Enjoy,
Jelly Bean

regards,
Guys.... da guide easy enough to follow
for those whose dont format internal sd, there will be efs folder in /sdcard/ (internal sd) Juz open da efs folder, copy everything inside it into phone memory in efs folder.
folder will be in here /efs by overwritten everything, there will be 3 (usually file inside backup efs folder or juz copy everything (not da folder named backup, da file inside it)
then reboot
oyea u need to have root permission to alter system

NOPE, never use other ROMs meant for other phones on your phone.
S1 and S3 are not the same
you need to locate the i9300 stock ROM, preferably an early version and flash to get back your IMEI
First identify your model as branded versions, need branded ROMs
Galaxy S III GT-I9300 Galaxy S III International
Galaxy S III SHW-M440S Galaxy S III South Korea
Galaxy S III SGH-T999 Galaxy S III T-Mobile
Galaxy S III SGH-I747 Galaxy S III AT&T
Galaxy S III SC-06D Galaxy S III Japan
Galaxy S III SCH-R530 Galaxy S III U.S. Cellular
Galaxy S III SCH-I535 Galaxy S III Verizon
Galaxy S III SPH-L710 Galaxy S III Sprint
than go here to locate your sub forum and search for the earliest STOCK ROM , that your phone came with and flash that to recover your IMEI and also post there for help as someone there might have another solution
