Camera. Is it REALLY 10 Megapixel ? - Moto X Q&A

I am very happy with my phone but I don't care for the over simplified camera interface.
I've installed a couple of different ones including Camera JB Plus, the 4.3 camera from the Google edition HTC One Dump, and Camera Zoom FX.
None of these cameras will allow a photo size larger than 5 megapixels.
So what gives?

Camera FV-5 shows 10.5 mp

Thanks. I wonder what's up with 3rd party cameras.

The camera on the X has a native 16:9 sensor. Since the other camera apps were designed for cameras with 4:3 sensors, they probably can't properly access the full size of the X's widescreen photos.

I'm thinking about getting that application. Is better than stock app camera?

It certainly has a lot more options to play around with than the stock camera. It certainly gives you a dslr feel.

[Q] Problems with HDR camera function.

I have taken some photos with the HDR stock camera function and some from an HDR camera app from Google Play.
The photo taken with the stock camera takes a regular photo. The other takes three. There is no high contrast definition (as is even displayed on the selection screen on the N3.
Has anyone else noticed this in their phone?
The HDR camera app takes three images and combines them to get a single image. You can reduce this to single shot in the pro version of the app.
Whereas the stock camera app takes a single shot.

The single shot is not an HDR image. It isn't a composite OR HDR. I think there is a problem.

Better camera quality

Can someone point me in the right direction. I have An HTC One, an iPhone 5 and the newest addition is my AT&T Galaxy Note 3. The problem I'm having is my HTC One takes the best pictures by far (day or night) I have read up on the GN3 and the camera, I've read that you have to set the camera at 13mp and to get better quality at night the stabilizer needs to be on. But still the pictures at best look 6 out of 10 maybe. Thank you.
The pictures I get of my kids with this device has better picture quality than any device I've owned so far. Even motion shots are unbelievably clear and crisp

If you don't mind me asking, what were your camera settings for that photo? Also how's your photos at night?
I have all those and a iPhone 5s and don't see them having pictures like you make it sound.

Yeah, maybe I have something set wrong. Is there any ideas you could give me?
The default resolution is set at 8mp. Open the camera and go to settings and select the 13mp option. You can also switch to 4k recording in the camcorder settings though for me it limits video to 5 min lengths.

Zooming limitation in photos

Has anybody else noticed that you can zoom only up to a certain extent i pics, I guess only to 100% of thr pic size. Sometimes the photos are very hard to view so I need more zoom. I searched a lot and the only thing I found out is changing accessibility settings and tripple tapping to zoom. This isn't a real solution to the problem, as it's very ugly and not practical. Does anyone know any mod to enable more zooming?

Thats a good question! i was never impressed with the camera on the HTC One and let alone the zoom. I had to pull the photos off and use Adobe Photoshop to zoom to the level i needed for detail. Doubt this is what you want to do but, if worse comes to worse.
FYI - HTC work on a better camera on these phones
The way HTC handles zooming in the gallery is by it's resolution. In order to zoom in to a photo more is by using a 3rd party gallery

It's not only in gallerg, it's also in FB and other apps. Any way to change it?

Doesn't anyone understand there is no zoom? The so called zoom is the same as cropping, which is limited by the resolution. Lower megapixels = lower level of cropping before pixelation

I'm pretty sure he's referring to zooming to photos he has saved on his phone or photos he is viewing on Facebook. I realize these phones don't have zoom and only digital zoom which is essentially the same as cropping. What he is trying to do is trying to bypass the limitations that HTC implementated to the zooming level on the photos he is viewing

Did you ever read my question? I was pretty clear I am talking abour SAVED photos, not camera app. I have had many phones, but this is the first that limits the zooming so much, it's absurd. My old Sensation can zoom up to 300%. I think HTC had done this because of the ****ty resolution of the camera

This limitation was set even before this phone with its ultrapixel camera. I believe it was implemented starting on the HTC one X series including the evo lte but I could be wrong. You can try aosp the zoom limitation isn't there

[Q] Alternate to stock camera?

So I'm coming from the Razr M, which was never a top end device even when it was released a couple years ago, but I like it's cam. I've noticed that, and maybe it's just me, but I really don't like how the Moto X pictures come out comparatively. I'm not sure if it's the app itself or the camera. I'd assume it's a better camera than I have on a 2 year old device. Is there an alternative camera app that maximizes the camera hardware? I've tried Focal but not a huge fan. Most of the other camera apps seem to focus on filters and editing. Which is great but I am just looking for a camera app that is better than stock. Either that or a tutorial on the stock app settings. If I was rooted I'd just try my Razr M cam. But not going to root this one for a good while. Any help would be appreciated m

Fv5 works well, but nothing launches as fast as the stock camera and you have to manually adjust settings to see an improvement. The biggest issue is the stock camera cranks up the ISO for some reason. The 4.4.2 update makes it less severe however and I've gotten adequate or better quality since the update.
Definitely 4.4.2 improved the camera. But I'm using better camera anyway....I really like it.

Remember that a lot of camera apps limit your mp to like 2....so a little hard to judge quality. Kinda dumb that they do that. Do a full version time limit trial would make more sense.

I will give a +1 to fv5. I have tried probably 20 camera apps on this phone, and fv5 is the winner for me. It gives solidly dependable results.

For those giving a thumbs up to fv5, I assume you are referring to the paid version, correct? If so, what mp is the output of the paid version?

What camera are y'all using

Stock or is there some better for nexus 7 specifically?

You mean Nexus 6? I use stock.
http://www.droid-life.com/2015/01/1...ext-purchase-if-you-own-a-nexus-5-or-nexus-6/ looks promising but lack of features.
Gives me hope that a better camera software will be available because stock takes awhile to take a shot.

16:9 would be nice. Obviously there will be no HDR + which I use mostly... Not sure if they'll do true HDR in the future.
i use the google camera and aosp camera. a better camera is good, since they started using the api2 with it. but it has an issue with focusing at the moment.
Manual Camera by GD Software is best overall camera. Worth every penny. You can find on App Store.
The camera for nexus is going to update with the new api's. You can Google it and its being developed on as we speak. Cheers

Using FV-5 for the RAW format captures if it's a photo I'll want to keep. Stock camera if I have to snap a photo to share on hangouts or FB.

Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
I've read about Manual Camera and how there are a few major issues with it (no front camera access, no videos, no saving of settings etc) but the positives are very good too (fast, good control, RAW). With a few updates it could become the best camera for the Nexus 6.
Reports that Google are updating the camera aren't all that informative and I dont expect the stock Google camera to have dramatic changes in post-processing abilities, speed, options or anything else. They MIGHT add RAW, but then the post-processing of photos through the stock camera (as well as speed) do not compared to other cameras out there (especially on other phones...Note 4, 6+ etc.).
If I were anyone wanting a new camera experience, I'd keep an eye on Manual Camera.
I can't help but feel the RAW thing is a bit of a gimmick on a phone though, and I say that as someone who shoots exclusively in RAW.
The benefits of using RAW are negated by the relative lack of quality in the camera itself (Compared with a DSLR for example) so realistically, I think it's a catchy term that'll appeal to those who aren't a big fan of the stock camera.
