So I just got my att moto x today and i'm trying to restore some app data with helium. It says you can do it without root but so far the app asks me to connect it to my desktop (something it never did with my N4) and then it tries to connect with the helium desktop agent. It does find a connection. I've downloaded 2 different motorola apps, helper and device manager, neither seemed to help.
Not sure what else I can do. Just want to get some game data transferred over (candy crush, minion rush, angry birds).
I think you have to copy the backed up files to the carbon directory on your phone's internal storage. The reason you have to connect to the computer and run the desktop app isn't to actually copy the files, it is to initiate the adb connection that allows for the backup/restore to work.

Yup, finally got it working. I had to download the drivers from the bootloader thread and then the adb interface it was trying to install finally worked. After that i've had success with all but 2 apps.

Awesome, I'm glad to hear Helium works with the Moto X. The dev claimed Motorola devices wont work but it looked like that's changed!
Can anyone else confirm that Helium works with the Moto X? I'm planning on getting the X during their Cyber Monday deal and Helium not working would be a deal breaker.

I'm having the same issue. Moto X will not connect to the Helium desktop app. Where do I get the drives you mentioned in the boot loader thread?

Apparently google was pushing new market update to all the android runnig phones, is th market update process working in our froyo port? I'm asking as I still have the old version of market.

Right here at attachements.
Works on my Kaiser
Just open the .apk with a file manager on your phone and install it.
It will replace the old Market.
Nice looking market BTW
Update doesn't work on mine...
Running Gingerbones 5.1 Odexed... Possibly due to the fact that Market is Odexed in this build.. :-(
why need update? the current market is working well on cyanogens 6.1, or no?

Oh, god no. My phone and pushing are not a good combination.
Can't connect my phone using ADB.
When I want to start up my pc and my phone is connected, it just freezes at the Splash screne until I pull my phone out. Then it boots normally.
Yeah that's probably because it's odex'd. I don't really remember on wich one I tried. If I'm not mistaken it was on Clemsyn's Final Froyo Build.
Downloaded it somewhere off Megaupload. Got the link from some video on YouTube.
I've managed to odex the updated market, and use Terminal Emulator to transfer it to my /system partition overwriting my original market, and it seems to work. Granted I had a gapps FC at boot, but restarted without a hitch.
So far no other FCs, and Market is fully working. Though not sure how many apps I still have available. :-/

I did similar, got the file, sent it to the kaiser, odexed it, sent it back to pc.
Edited my androidinstall.tar, replace old market with new one.
Its working so well, that it detected a gmail update and installed it perfectly (no manual input).
the old market gave me errors doing that, had to manual update.
Nice
Great work
could one of you post the odexed new market?
many thanks!

same here on polaris with scoot's Kernel With Separate Cache Partition.
also no dialog to choose between charge only/hard drive/etc when connecting to booted pc via usb.
adb does work though, just make sure the drivers are installed on your pc, connect and wait for >120s before calling "adb wait-for-device". once your prompt reappears you are connected and ready for e.g. "adb shell".
use "adb kill-server" and "adb wait-for-device" when you get disconnected (not exactly stable) - i use WiFi Keyboard and WiFi File Explorer from market instead.
Thinking about getting one of these to replace my Defy (I managed to beat up my Defy so hard I broke it -- I probably shouldn't be allowed a new smart phone :silly: ).
But I use linux. And for some reason Motorola have set it up so you need Windows software to mount it. I don't want to have to reboot my computer every time I want to transfer a file.
I'm not talking about root (I might not even bother -- but I *can* reboot into windows just to do that). I just want a phone that's compatible with my ordinary computer for ordinary file transfer. Is there a way?
Thanks,
AW: Can I transfer files under linux?

The problem when doing this is that you can't access everything, but I may be wrong.
The best way (thanks to purplet ) is to use Airdroid or something similar if possible.
Another way is to root and re-enable the USB mass storage.
Finally, you can use ADB if you're ok with command line.
So actually, I now see that this applies to all android 4.0+ devices, and you need to get mpt installed, then all is fine. If anyone else wanted to know, here are some instructions:
http://maketecheasier.com/connect-nexus-7-to-ubuntu/2012/12/27
http://blog.jeshurun.ca/technology/connecting-the-google-nexus-7-to-ubuntu-mint-over-usb
I'm looking to unlock my One and install a custom ROM onto it (such as Android Revolution or TrickDroid), but I heard that unlocking erases the content of the phone, and I know installing a custom ROM will definitely clear my phone.
So I want to know if there's a backup software that I can just plug in my phone, check all the things I want to backup (Txts, apps, musics, photos) and restore that after I flash a custom ROM. A lot of the games I play right now (Temple Run 2, Carmaggedon) have a great deal of progress in them, and if I just reinstall them then I will lose that progress.

Can you confirm that Helium works for you and how you got it to work please. I tried both on my HTC One X and my HTC One and could get it to work on neither of them. I read somewhere that this was because HTC phones will only connect through USB in MTP mode now where Helium needs to connect in the standard Disk Drive mode, which was removed in HTC's JB updates. Am I missing something here??
How I had to do it in the end was by using the tool in this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36499906 Some people found it didn't work but it worked perfectly for me
Couldn't get it to work on my stock HTC One. After installing Helium on the phone and desktop and with USB Debugging turned on HTC Sync pops up on the and shows me photos on the desktop. On the phone it keeps saying "Waiting for the Helium Desktop application to enable application backup on your Android." Cancel is the only choice. I can open the phone folders on the computer and see the folders. Wonder, do I just copy them across to a folder on the computer?
Hello all,
I have been creeping these forums for quite some time, but this will be my first post since I can't seem to get sideloading to work on my Galaxy Gear.
First of all, it was very hard to find the apk file i wanted (fat finger calculator), so I settled with an apk file for a calculator another helpful member developed himself. It was very easy to download, compared to other popular free apps. I don't understand why people can't upload the apks of other apps just liek he did.
I went through the steps to be able to sideload, but immediately hit a snag because my gear didnt have the usb debug option. I managed to find a solution by tapping my version number seven times (?). Everywhere else I didn't see people having this problem, or describing it in how to guides, very strange indeed..
Sideloading apps to the gear is described as "very easy", but as I finally got to the step to sideload the apk file in cmd after the above procedures I get an error that nobody has brought up as a potential problem, nor a fix for it. Hence this post.
I use the command: adb install C:\Users\SP Gaming I\Desktop\samsung\calculator.apk
and I get the error: too many files specified; only takes APK file and verifier file
Sideloading isnt as easy as it is described in countless sources, and there isn't a good, accessible step by step guide. Not that I could find anyway. I dont want to use any third party applications, and would really like to sideload through cmd and adb.
Can someone help me with this last obstacle i ran into? I can't find any information on what I am doing wrong. The app should be able to install with this command, no? I have the drivers and ADB. What am I doing wrong?
I really need a simple calculator on my gear, it would be so nifty in my everyday work/life. Please someone, help me!
-edit lol, before posting this, I wanted to try to install it from a simpler path: c:\calculator.apk
this actually did the trick and I managed to install the app! however, maybe someone will have use for my post since I encountered so mnay snags..
It is not easy....it is EXTREMELY easy. If you are running Null rom just use usb cable tu put the apk on you gear and then with any file manager install. Or I have also used the Google Play store on my PC and sent it directly to my Gear.
Do you have gapps?
Are you running null?

For the uninitiated, you are jumping over a few steps that may seem easy and obvious to you, but not for the first timer. Did you read my thread?
First of all, how would one get a hold of the apk file one would need for the installation process? All links i can find routes me to the google play store. If i press install there, it asks me which device I want it on, and can only find my mobile phones in that drop down list. It doesn't give me a raw .apk file. After some googling there seem to be some plugin for chrome to do it, but I run Firefox and I don't want to install chrome on my machines for various reasons. ALso by looking on the guide to fetch the apk with that plugin, it doesnt seem as easy as using any other plugin, I have to input my device id and things like that. Atleast a few steps only there to get the desired apk file downloaded.
I want to quote you again: "It is not easy....it is EXTREMELY easy. If you are running Null rom just use usb cable tu put the apk on you gear and then with any file manager install. Or I have also used the Google Play store on my PC and sent it directly to my Gear."
Oh lawdy, if it was this easy I would have had my calculator on my gear one hour ago, the moment I started researching if I could get a calculator. "Just use USB cable". On you it sounds like it would find the apk, download it, install it on my gear, all this automatically, only by plugging my gear into my computer with an USB cable. Maybe you missed that I didn't even have the USB debug option under "more info", under settings. Nowhere I read initially, it said that I had to go to dev mode by tapping my version number 7 times in order to get the USB debug option.
Maybe by judging by my first post and the process I had while doing this "extremely" easy thing, you would notice that I am a very novice user when it comes to these things. I am sorry if I upset you by reaching out for help. Get real man.
Easiest method that I have been using is Wonder share on a PC. My computer recognized my Note 3 and installed drivers before this. To get APPS I put on phone using app store, then Export to PC folder, then Install to Gear. with both look up by USB is very fast and easy to get from the phone to the gear you can also load music files and movies this way and put programs on your gear like the Apollo player or mX Video Player I'm able to watch movies and podcast on the gear this way and listen to music that is on the gear.

The reason is that your path has spaces in it. Command line tools treat spaces as delimiters between arguments. In other words, It thinks you want to adb install "C:\Users\SP", "Gaming", and "I\Desktop\samsung\calculator.apk". The fix for this is, like you did, either move it to another directory, or (even easier) simply put quotes around the file name. So, your full command would be
adb install "C:\Users\SP Gaming I\Desktop\samsung\calculator.apk"
As a tip for command line stuff in the future, do this.
cd "C:\Users\SP Gaming I\Desktop\samsung"
adb install calculator.apk
You can also use the Tab key to autocomplete file names when in cmd.exe on Windows, which will auto-add the quotes if they are needed.
As you mentioned in your other post, acquiring APK files in the first place isn't immediately obvious. You can use:
http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/
and just paste the Google Play link in and download, even without the extension. However, once set up, the Chrome extension is extremely easy to use; just click the button and you're done. If you really really don't want to install Chrome for your untold reasons, you can always set up a virtual machine, or use a program like Sandboxie to make sure it doesn't touch the rest of your system.
It does seem odd that none of the guides say that you had to hit the version number 7 times; that's actually been a part of Android since 4.2. All USB Debugging options are disabled until you do that, on any device.

Hi. I followed the directions off amazon website for manual update but it doesn't work and their instructions are by "corporate standards" lol. I am running 11.3.1.0_user_310084920 and I just downloaded update-kindle-7.4.8_D025_4849020.bin the latest from the amazon website.
Amazons website didn't say anything about a specific folder to put the update into it just said put it into the main drive folder. so I looked it up and there is supposed to be a folder called "kindleupdates" <hopefully case sensitive like this. I just created the folder on the drive and put the .bin into it then i went to the device menu and selected system updates then I click check now cause that is the only option available. after it runs it says last updated failed with a retry button now. when i click the retry button it doesnt work at all just flashes the text of last update failed.
I did this without creating the kindleupdates folder and also with it. nothing happens. and it only wants to connect to wifi if it is disconnected.
adb is working with my device fine if there is anything else i can do. I didn't push the file with adb though, i used gmtp to transfer the file and it is there.
for right this second i am just wanting to get this thing back to full stock since I have it rooted and i have multiple small issues with it like the status bar gone and chaning the build.prop for it doesn't work then work with anything else after since I have uninstalled to many system apps.
i dont have a fastboot cable but i seen and heard from stunts that it may not be needed because of buffer size.
i also unrooted this tablet and factory reset it and all to try the update as well. the root exploit is nice and quick lol
thanks to anyones help
