A Noobs Guide to Getting Started with a Custom Rom on the Nook Color
So you heard about the nook color. How it's a cheap e-reader that can be pushed to the limit and you are wondering how you can enable this power for yourself. Well you came to the right place!

1. Why you should NOT use Honeycomb
So you've heard about how the Nook Color can run Honeycomb and you are thinking that you want to try it. I mean why not? It's a tablet OS and the Nook is supposed to be turned into a tablet right? Well here's how it is. Honeycomb unlike other versions of Android is not an open source release. That means that developers cannot see how it works and have to reverse engineer basically the entire thing. This leaves you will something that barley runt because of countless missing drivers and many bugs from the SDK simulator. Honeycomb is a very painful and unstable experience. Do not use it. Wait for the next version of Android codename Ice Cream Sandwich to come out. For now use CM7. To check on the progress of CM9 (AKA ICS) check out this thread where you can find the first alpha builds.
2. SD or Internal install
The first decision you need to make is if you want to install CM7 (Android) over your current stock firmware or to run from an SD card.
a. SD Install
The benefit of running from an SD card is that you get to keep your Nook's current stock rom along side your Android install. The downside is that Android will run terribly if you do not use the correct SD card.
When running from an SD card use ONLY a SANDISK CLASS 2 or 4!

b. Internal Install
I recommend you do an internal install just because it is more stable and a lot easier to troubleshoot and upgrade to a newer CM version. If you ever need to return to stock it is very easy (see part 3).
To install to your internal memory follow this guide
Remember if you have a newer Nook that came with stock version 1.2 or above you may want to follow the repartitioning instructions here to have more space available to save files.
3. Restoring to Stock
So something happened and you need to return to stock. You need to make a warranty claim, register you device with BN, or whatever.
Here is what you need to do
When you are done you will have a complete stock Nook to do whatever you want with.

Starting with N64oid 2.0 and above the new .32 Nook kernel used in CM7 does not work with N64oid.

Overclock/undervolt is included in the CM7.1 kernel.
Overclocking is built in to the CM settings. To undervolt you need to use the Nook Tweaks app.

Link provided by koolkid was for 1.0.1 but I think it was the standard procedure for any other version.
I'm eager to learn a new, better way.
I just substitute the full 1.3 .zip for the CM7 and gaaps .zips when booting with the original install image and it works fine. I recommend everyone who installs CM7 to the eMMC save their original install SD card for future needs and buy a 2nd one for use with CM7. The 1.3 .zip now seems to be missing from the drop box site though so someone will need to repost it. It was linked in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690&page=29

One suggestion for more info regarding an issue which many noobs like me may have: How to expand the partition to use the rest of the SD card. On my 16Gb card, it now has four partitions: Boot, 2x unallocated, and Storage. Using EASUS PartitionMaster, how do I expand the fourth partition ? Do I have to delete the two unallocated ? Any further info regarding this would be very much appreciated !!
If I use App2SD, which partition would those programs go to ? Seeing that I already booted from SD, the Apps are already on the SD, right ? No need to "move to SD" ?

For your first question: just right click the 4th partition, select resize and then make sure everything is selected.
For your 2nd question: I'm not exactly sure as I do not use an SD install. Maybe someone else with more SD booting experience can help but what I am thinking is that all of your apps are on the 2nd or 3rd partition but when you use app2SD they get moved to the 4th partition.

Unfortunately you cannot use the 8 failed boot method if you replace the stock recovery which most do when installing CM. That is why I used the method I did with this guide. It works no matter what is on your internal memory.

I'm probably slow but your provided link is for rooting the 1.2/1.3 NC using ManualNooter. It has nothing to do with reverse back to stock ROM.
And, the complete wipe near the bottom of the first post, again, has nothing to do with reversing if currently running custom ROM on eMMC.
A mod should definitely sticky this...most helpful thread I've read in the general forum yet.

I just got a refurbished Nook Color and after hours of searching and reading I came across your post. This guide is a like a mother-load of good links and clear instructions. Thank you for taking the time to put it together. It has really helped me understand what was needed to get my NC up and running.
This is a really helpful guide for beginner.
I want to ask some thing about the whole workflow. I've used other Android phones to play with rooting and flashing new roms, but NC is quite new to me. So still need to make sure about something.
In this guide, there is nothing about rooting. And when I use CM7 from a SD card, I don't have to do that and already got the su in terminal. So I suppose if I just flash CM onto the eMMC, I'll get root access anyway. I don't have to root it right now in its stock system, right?
-Updated the Restoring to stock guide to use a 1.3 and the newest clockwork it's on Android Central for now but I might move it over here if I get some time.

Nope, no need to root if you are going to flash CM7 because of the ability to boot a custom recovery from an SD card.
I have had my Nook HD for a while now. But now i would like to ask whether rooting is 1. Good for the device and 2. Unlock the full potential of the the tablet.
The reason why i'm asking is i want to sideload apps and be able to install .apk files to it.
Please advice.

You do not need to Root in order install apks. Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and make a bootable CWM SD and flash my extras zip which enables 'unknown sources' and allows installing apks.
You do not want to root unless it is absolutely necessary since there is danger of resetting your device. This is all explained in that thread.

I completely agree with leapinlar. It is not necessary to root, if you don't want to. You can still sideload, by installing "Unknown Sources" package compiled by leapinlar in his respective thread.
Downside to setting it up though, you need to have a microSD card. After that, you need to burn CWM (which is no problem), and then install the .zip. It's all easy, if you follow the guide(s).
However, I posted here to suggest to your a different ROM, perhaps CyanogenMod 10 could deliver what you want? Once I installed it, I'm never turning back to the default B&N ROM. It changes the "bar" at the bottom, into a black Android ICS+ one. I also find that more apps are compatible via Google Play too (one example, Sims FreePlay now appears in the Play Store).
It's completely up to you, all the best.
You can also side load apps if you sign up for a (free) Nook developer account. B&N has step by step instructions on their developer web site.
I suspect leapinlar's version is easier, but I haven't tried it.
Is it possible on the stock software that you can sideload apps like adobe flash? Looked high and low and couldn't find a setting in the settings menu.

There is not a setting that you can modify. But if you go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature, I have a flashable CWM zip that sets it for you. Look at item 3, Extras.

On my stock HD when I first bought it no root it said developer options and adb and sideloading were there. It was on 1.2 stock

Yes, you can still use ADB to connect and sideload apps, but it is very difficult to set up. My CWM method is much easier.

I can vouch that I added the side load option through leaplinlar method and it worked out great. I wanted to test out stock before full commit to cm10 but wanted amazon app store to download some apps to test.

Hello guys from xda-developers.com, I desperately need your help. I just got a new Nook HD+ and I live in a country where is very difficult to access to the internet by anyway. So, I can’t register the HD+ to Barnes&Noble site, nor purchase apps or get the HD+ working on.
I just want to use the Nook as a no-wifi stand-alone device for reading, watching movies, gaming, and using apps like calendar, calculator, alarm clock and so on by finding a safe way for sideloading apps and files locally from my computer to it. How I should do this and get the Nook HD+ completely useful? Now the Nook is in test mode, skipping first registration screen with OOBE procedure after a factory reset. I need detailed step-by-step instructions.
I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and make a bootable CWM SD. Use that to flash my Universal Root rev3 and my enable Unknown Sources and you can sideload any app you want. The hardest part for you will be getting a file manager working so that you can sideload. With no internet I'm not sure what you can do. If you don't have internet, how are you reading this?

Thanks. I did it and it worked up perfectly at first try. Later put reading files and apps on the external SD card and using OfficeSuite could read word and pdf files with no problems. But I could not find a way to run my own apps. How can I do that?. Sorry if that is a silly question but I am new to tablets world and I feel like a deer in the headlights (your saying) or like a cow at the movies (our saying). Greetings from Cuba.

Not sure what you mean, run your own apps. You mean after you installed them, finding them to run? There are two ways.
Sideloaded apps do not show in the stock app drawer. But you can open another screen that does show them. Go to apps and hold your finger on the apps title bar and push the volume up button. An new screen called extras shows. Your apps will be there.
Another way is to sideload an alternate launcher like zeam. Then when you hit the n key it gives you the option of using it by default instead of the stock launcher. Do it. Your sideloaded apps show there.

I meant: I want to run the .apk files I have on the external SD card which were copied on it by attaching the SD card reader to my PC. Explain me how to get those apps running or link to some tutorial. Thanks.

That is what I meant when I said you would have a challenge doing it without internet.
The problem is those apk files must be installed before they can be run. The normal way to install them after you flashed my zip is to open the apk with a file manager. When you do, a dialog box opens asking if you want to install. Easy enough.
But stock has no file manager to open the apks with. So you have to get one somehow. If you have no internet and no ability to run a store, there is no way to get one. You might try the 'files' function in stock to do it.
Edit: Actually I figured it out for you.
1. Find an apk for a file manager, like root browser, es file manager or other.
2. Copy that apk to your internal sd using your USB cable attached to your PC.
3. Open chrome with your app drawer.
4. In the chrome address bar type the following:
file:///sdcard/nameofapk.apk
5. Hit enter
6. It will ask if you want to keep it, say yes.
7. When it is finished downloading, click on the little down arrow in the top middle of the screen. It will ask if you want to complete the action using two choices. Select package installer.
It will install the apk, hopefully your file manager. Now do the first (extras) method I showed you in my other post to find the app. Then use the file manager to open more apks and install them.

I see I misused “run” for “sideloading.
Before trying that for sideloading a file manager tell me if there is another way to show the “extras” screen as it is difficult to get it show by pushing down volume up button and taping on App’s bar name. It not always work.
And why, if I see the Zem Launcher icon on Settings, Applications, My Apps, as installed, it doesn’t ask for choices when I push down “N” nook button.
Hope to make myself understood.

Yes, that extras screen is hard to activate.
But I have a fix for you. Go to settings and uninstall zeam. Then flash this file:

It is my old "extras" file (not related to the extras screen I was talking about earlier). It will re-install zeam and add root browser, which will let you install apks directly. And now when you do the n, it should give you the default choice.

I flashed the file and reinstalled zeam launcher plus root browser and could sideload the ES File Manager from external SD card but still have to active the "extras" screen to reach to it. Nook buttom doesn’t give options. When pushed down, it takes me immediately to nook side. Movies are not played back either. Is there a way to change completely the Nook system to convert it into a more friendly android tablet?

Yes. But I recommend making the CWM SD using my new procedure in my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. Follow item 1a, then do everything else per that thread you quoted.

The CM10.1.3. And yes, you can use that same SD to flash it. If you want to use Play Store, you also need to flash the gapps zip. Gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip from goo.im.

curently have cm9 with twrp 2.2. How do I start over and load the new ROMS that are out. Any help would be appreciated. I don't care about he current apps and don't have files I need to save. Can someone point me in the right direction? thanks

I appreciate the information but still have a question. Does the acme uninstaller remove the twrp and do I need to reinstall something else?

ACMEUninstaller2 (uninstalls Android and removes recovery, All versions) That's what it says in Rolands thread .

Hi there! I am trying to see if I can replace the actually Nook boot and shutdown animations on my Stock HD+.
I have gone back and forth for a while with CM 10.1/10.2 and 11 and for different reasons none of them are satisfactory for my user needs with my Nook. I'd still like a little "bling" though if I can pull it off.
I have a decent File Manager, but once I browse to the level of the /system/media folder I no longer have the ability to create or overwrite any files or folders. I realize this has to do with the permissions. If there is anyway to alter this I should have no problem with what I am trying to do, but I have no idea how or if I can change or bypass the permissions. I can see that the permissions for both the bootanimation.zip and the shutdownanimation.zip are "-r-" but that's as far as I can get. I can copy the files without a problem but I can't replace them. If anyone has a clue on how I can do this or can steer me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.
You need to have "root" access to do that. You can get root access by going to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and following directions there.

I really have to read through that and make sure I am understanding it all correctly.
So, basically if I use Universal Root I can keep my B&N Stock interface and reader as well as having more access to settings options and such?
It mentions 2.1.1 Stock on the thread, my Nook HD+ is currently 2.2.1 so I would have to revert to the 2.1.1 Stock prior to any of the mods mentioned on your HD/HD+ CWM thread?

You are correct about things staying the same only with greater access. Do not worry about 2.1.1 vs 2.2.1, it works the same.
