Name: AudiobookMark
I was frustrated by the lack of built-in support for mp3-based audiobooks so I wrote this app. It lets you load as many audiobooks as you have memory for. It remembers where you are in each file of each book (and of course, which file you are listening to for each book).
It has standard transport keys plus the ability to enter HH:MM:SS to skip directly to.

Is this a free app?
Its a 0.99 app, with a free trial that basically let's you use it without limitation, but pops up a message box occasionally...
Can you add support for a sleep timer? So you need to shake the phone every 15 mins or it will pause the audio book.
That sounds like a useful addition. Let me think through how best to implement it, and I'll try to add it in with "run under locked screen" update I'm working on...

I would also really like this.
Hey dbroome, this sounds like it has the potential to be an awesome app. I'm so used to the Mortplayer audiobook app on Android and really enjoy using it (great alternative to music btw).
So by mention of "remembers where you are" you mean bookmarks are automatically placed for us? I ask because a cool feature of the mortplayer app was the bookmark feature where you can tag certain spots on demand and go back to wherever you tagged. I hope you go far with this app, it really does sound promising.
The UI looks good too!
I had not heard of Mortplayer, I'll have to check it out, though I don't have an Android device to be able to get a good look at it.
You are correct in that the app places the bookmark for you. It basically remembers where you were in each file.
How do you use the "tag different places in a file" type feature in your audiobook listening? I generally am just listening to novels, and don't have any real need to jump to various spots in the same file.
The reason I ask is that I'd like to implement features users would use, but don't want to overly complicate it with feature bloat.
As an update, I have implemented and am testing three new features. Once I make sure it is working as expected, I'll submit the update to the marketplace:
1) Configurable port on the loader (8001 might not be convenient for everyone. Should have thought of this before)
2) Run under locked screen. Now you can lock the screen to save battery power
3) Configureable sleep timer (with optional shake to reset).
I hope to submit it in the next day or so...
Thanks / Volume / File Corruption
First I love the app. I have been writing down my numbers until this app came along. Thank you dbroome.
Second, I noticed the volume is weaker than the default music player; has any one else notice this?
Third, I received a file corruption error message saying it couldn't determine the file lengths and displays all .MP3s as being 00:00:00 in running time. The files didn't play, but after a reboot they started too but still display the zero length; anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks!
Also needs skip forward/skip back button that just goes 30 sec back/fprward. The current skip to a location is not usable when driving.
Bonus points for a ui redesign with bigger buttons.
Additional bonus points for a fast play (i.e. play back at 150% speed with no pitch shift).
For me to purchase, I need:
Play under lock screen
Uploader program to work (changing ports might help)
In order to determine the length of the mp3, the player has to actually open the file and then close it. The Zune software interferes with the player opening the file after upload, and as such you have to unplug the phone from the computer after uploading before closing the "I'm done" pop up box. I'm guessing that the 0-length issue might have been due to that. Try deleting that book and re-loading it to the phone, making sure to unplug the phone before continuing (or, alternatively, using the SDK's WPConnect.exe which doesn't interfere with the media being opened).
It might be useful to add a "determine durations" type button on the load screen that would let you try to determine them again at a later time instead of re-loading them. What do you think?
30 second skip could definitely be useful. I'll see if I can find a good way to incorporate it in the next update.
I really want fast play as well. Unfortunately the MediaElement player I have to use to be able to set positions doesn't support it. I'll definitely be watching the updates as they come out for supporting that.
I'm dreadful at UI stuff, but I have a friend who I can probably rope into giving it some love.
Play under lock and the configureable port are in the next update, which I will finish testing and submit tonight...
Cool. Bought it as an encourgement.
For UI ideas look at audiobook player 2. It is much easier to use while driving.
Suggestions
Your [skip to a time] section shouldn't be on the main page, but off a toolbar option.
Your play/pause button should swap between play/pause depending on state rather than changing the background colour.
Use images rather than text in the buttons [|<] [<<] etc
v1.1 has been approved and should show up in the marketplace shortly. This adds a sleep timer (with optional shake to reset), play under lock, and configureable port on the loader and phone.
Next update will hopefully be a ui re-do, possibly adding the "skip xx seconds" idea.
Downloaded the update for the app, re-uploaded the audio book, followed instructions on the pop up (after upload completed) and the software recognized the full lengths. Very nice! Thanks dbroome!! The mp3s seem to have uploaded a little quicker too or is it this just me?
FYI, using a colon within the name of a book crashes the app (at least it does for me).
Good find. I'll correct that.
Waiting on a friend with some design skills. If he doesn't come back to me soon, I'll go looking for free images to include on the buttons and do a general usability re-skin of the ui...
Is this the correct website: http://davidbroome.com/AudiobookMark
I am just getting Bad Request (Invalid Hostname) when I try to goto it. Also the volume seems low on my Samsung Focus. Good work though, I am going to buy it.
Thanks!
The website had a temporary issue and should be resolved.
I'm looking into the lower volume and should have at least an answer soon if not a fix...
it's a very nice little app and I'm using it now for a few weeks.
But I've found when you have to many audiobooks or when the aaudio-files are very big (about 6 MB's) the program can't determine the length of the audio-files any longer...
Maybe we can get an update for that?
The only time I have been able to load an audio file the program could not determine the length of was when I forgot to unplug the phone from the Zune software when prompted. I have tested files up to 50 mb. Of course, it could be file dependent. Did the file play even after the length failed to update?
Fortunately I am almost done with the next update that includes code to re-check for the length of files if it fails the first time. I need to finish the "Load from DropBox" functionality that I am implementing and then I can submit it. Hopefully this week!
Yes - I can start the player and I can play the file even when it says the length is 00:00:00.
This morning I've transferred some 300 MB audiobook-files to my HD7. After that I disconnected the device and it started "determining length of..." and it immediately started playing the first file (10.7 MBs) but even after 20 minutes it just couldn't find the length of the first audio-file so I stopped the program.
Name: Media Volume Settings
Marketplace description:
Have you ever noticed that after opening some application or game, the volume for media playback (from zune for example) is higher or lower ? Or that some games have the volume too high ?
This application allows to fine tune that internal background media volume, separately from the main device volume. It can also be useful when an application or game has background music too loud or too soft.
Please note it DOESN'T work while connected to Zune, which restores volume to 100%. Also note it can't control in-call, device or notifications volume nor can keep the settings after a reboot due to WP7 features/limitations, about which I can't do anything.
Trial is ad-supported
Updated in 1.4:
- customizable presets
- better compatibility through the Dispatcher (should help ?)
- better interface, up/down buttons
__
Please remember that you can't update a trial application in the marketplace at the moment. You have to uninstall and reinstall it.
Notes:
I've noticed many application that can alter background/zune music volume (Bowling xx is one) and also some others that had their internal volume too high, so that even at volume 1/30 it was annoying at night (Krashlander is one). Some of them are now allowing internal volume regulation in later updates. This application solves both problems. I'm also looking into adding live tile (with volume value), not sure about the possibility of it...
Available in English,Italian and German .
before reporting it doesn't work, please note:
- it doesn't allow to make general volume higher
- media volume is used by most application and zune to control background music and sometimes sounds too (so you can fine tune with this)
- there are applications that modify this volume at start. There are many of these that don't set it back when they exits (and that's one of the main uses of the application)
- at boot, you always have 100% media volume
- when connecting to zune or synching wirelessly, it resets media volume to 100%
- while connected to zune, you can't alter volume
- it can't control in-call, notifications, alerts, ringtones, or door bell volume. I'm looking into controlling your dog bark, though

Please, anybody voting in the poll above, leave a comment with your phone model (and if it works). Thanks
Thank you !
That was my problem exactly, I had to restart my phone each time some application modified the volume especially when I wanted to use Zune and the music came out quite low. In fact I thought something was wrong with the speaker...
I’ve actually even used it with a game which had very loud background music.
Thanks, I'm going to release a free, ad-supported version in some days.
Trial updated to ad-support
The application has been updated with ad-supported, unrestricted use, trial version. Buying removes the ads. Please remember that you can't update a trial version in the marketplace at the time, you have to uninstall and reinstall it.
I've also found out that comparing two omnia7, both coming from germany, that one is quite louder than the other, even on max volume (both media and main device volumes at 100%). I've also checked the device gain in through diagnosis codes and they are the same. However I'd say the quiter one is already loud enough.
Or maybe that's to point on the fact that the louder one has been debranded by flashing a new rom ? (warranty repair, came broken from an extremely rude german internet shop which refused to replace it ! If you are going to buy one in Germany I can pm his name, so you can avoid what I've been through)
You should add all the different volumes settings to it... like system volume, notification volume, etc. Then it could be a one stop place to change volume for all aspects of the device.

To the best of my knowledge, the wp7 toolkit doesn't allow you to manipulate device (system) volume. There is also no separate notification volume in windows phones, it uses the same as ringer/device volume.
link to zune market place
first of all nice application!
can you please tell me how to get the link to the application in marketplace once the application is uploaded. The only way i thought to view the application is search in zune software.
Thanks.
Thanks.
I got that problem too. First thing I did was trying to get something out of the assembly, but right in the middle of it I discovered the appropriate command.
I'm on the wrong computer now and can't remember what it is, but I think it's something that sound like OpenMarketPlacePage. If I remember correctly, you don't need to get the id, call the link, etc.
Version 1.3 with german localization
I've just pushed the update to 1.3 to the testing process. Besides adding localization for our german friends (who apparently couldn't understand what the application does), there are some interface tweaks.
Most importantly, I've found out that connecting the phone to Zune has the effect of resetting the media volume to 100% and keeping it there while connected.
Regarding managing other volumes, at the moment I can't see a way. I guess there are three volumes at least: device (main), in-call, and media volume.
thanks....
There are some reviews on the market which just say that it won't work. If anyone noticed that it fails to regulate the volume, please indicate which model of phone is tested on and maybe the carrier/nation as well as it's also weird it didn't work for 2 out of 2 australian users...
as of now:
Success on:
2 omnia7
1 dell venue
2 focus
2 hd7
5 unknown
Failed on:
1 surround
2 focus
1 hd7
2 unknown
Do you think you could control ring volume separately ?
Works on my Focus, although resets on reboot.
I like it, but I wish we could simply set the media volume level straight up (0-30) instead of fractions of the system volume. I'm assuming that's much harder to implement, though.

Unfortunately not at the moment. From the looks of it, the sdk only exposes a few stuff to manage that background music volume, probably in order to manage it in-game easily.
Even if with some complex way one could control other volumes, it wouldn't pass certification because it would probably not use standard calls...

Glad you like it. Well, again, it would probably be nice to manage it that way, but at the moment the way media volume is designed completely forbid this. In fact at the beginning I was looking to implement something like this, but my guess is that this is how the volume settings work. After adapting a bit to it, it actually makes sense too.
At the beginning I was longing for an android-like, 6 channel volume mixer, but now I think they were too many and this is an easier way to manage volume.
The fact that it resets at reboot is another technical limitation/feature. The media volume is a 'soft' settings and I can't control what starts when the phone reboots. It's also a feature because if the volume got incorrectly set by some application (muted for example!) then you possibly wouldn't have a way to reset it.
What makes less sense is that it resets to 100% when connected to zune, which also stops the music. I'm sure there might be some explication behind it, it's just a tiny bit annoying...

Forgot to clarify:
in order to open your app marketplace page, you can do this in the code:
MarketPlaceDetailTask task = new MarketPlaceDetailTask();
task.Show();
while otherwise to know the product id or even the link for the application, once published, you can see it in the app hub details page.

Yes the overall volume on this device is bad in order to listen to tunes you have to use a headset otherwise there is no volume.

Not old at all actually. The day I created it, I went through my installed applications and hand picked them. It was called something else and they changed the name only very recently.

I use evernote with skitch, but there are more 'notebook' style apps out there that I'm only vaguely familiar with. Anyone else have suggestions? Also, which stylus did you get? I was thinking about getting one for use with my nook and vivid.

Any stylus should work, it's a matter of how well it works. without the custom software like the htc flyer and with the big footprint of most stylii, notes seem to take up way too much real estate on my phone, but acceptable on tablet. Personal preference though.

Not true. Has to t least be capacitive.
Oh. I sorta took the capacitive to be a given. Probably shouldn't have though...
There was one I liked but I can't think of the name right now. Will post it when it comes to me though. Acase seems decent but they all look like bit of a rip off to me. Could just buy capacitive foam, wire, and make your own. Tons of videos out there on how-to.
I'm wondering if the HTC one will work with our phone, the one used on the Flyer and Jetstream.
That would be awesome. Even more if we could get the app that lets us pen notes while recording and then link them to our calender, like with the tablets.

hi people,
I'm looking to switch to WinPhone.
I've got a few quite good features on Android that I'd like to make sure I can have/reproduce on WinPhone too. May you help me with those ?
- Have ringer/notifications volume to get adjusted to ambient noise and/or calendar events automatically
- have a car mode
- have an event/place actions system (like Tasker or OnX)
Many many thanks
Fabio
- for ambient no...
- all this (car mode, task manager with close X) is available with upcoming GDR3 update or today for developer or via WP AppStudio...
notice: car connection with BT for hands free calls and audio reproduction is available long time ago in WP but with upcoming GDR3 come additional settings
I'd say it depends on what type of android user you are. If you just user the phone, sms, browsing and occasional app then you're fine. If you're a power user then you'll just get annoyed and frustrated at simple things that you use yo be able to do but now can't.
As I've said in the windows 1520 thread, its undoubtedly a gorgeous piece of hardware and is the prime drive for me to keep looking into windows phone. Dare I say it and definitely not trying to be a troll, but if it did run android, I'm sure myself and others would buy it in a flash.
Sticking with realities though, I don't think WP8 is quite there yet for the advanced android user. I'm still very concerned that without DPI settings/apps with phablet UI, that the 1520 is just going to be running blown up phone apps, like first gen android tablets, which is not ideal.
File browser is key and offers so much flexibility. Copying and sharing photos off your DSLR, sending whatever file you want through gmail, deleting downloaded files etc. Skydrive is not a suitable replacement, especially if you're not always on wifi/limited 4G data plans.
Apps is becoming less of an issue with most of the core apps there in some shape and using 3rd party official apps is not something I worry about. It is still an issue however for niche apps. Eg Niche medical apps, a reliable CHM file reader (reference text books), advanced pdf reader/editor with the ability to underline/comment/draw in.... I can go on. Even office 365 functionality that is supposedly a huge selling point is largely replaceable with Kingsoft office which is superb sans the synching (you just need the extra step of google drive).
Then there are the core google services which have really exploded in functionality to become more than just gimmicks in the past 12 months. – Chrome browser with its desktop session synching, google now with its local contextual searches, automatic G+ photo uploader (full size backups with auto enhancement unlike dropbox).
Lets not mention 3rd party accessory compatibility with Windows Phone...ie. there APIs are so closed that no BT keyboards work with it for example.
There's a lot which is being fixed and is "promised" to be fixed in upcoming updates from MS – unfortunately thats always been the story with WP as they play catchup, which I understand being a new OS. However, 12 months on, even basic things like notification centre, screen rotation lock, separate notification ringtones, separate notification/system volumes are still yet to be fixed/only being patched now.
In terms of positives of the windows phone os, to be honest there isn't anything that appeals to me that I'm not already experiencing in android. Metro UI I don't mind but can be hit and miss with no notification centre and when you're relying on 3rd party live tiles which don't always update frequently enough for your liking (and wit no option to change). Simplicity is always touted as a windows phone advantage, but to be honest I find android simple enough if you know what you're doing and the appeal is more for perhaps people new to smartphones. As an android user, the simplicity actually feels limiting as I can't get things to work exactly how I want it to. In short it's a matter of how much I can compromise when coming from Android to wp on the software side unfortunately.
Having said all this I'd still keep looking at WP due to Nokia's hardware and their general nailing of the camera (which android hasn't accomplished fully yet), but there needs to be a lot of improvement on the software side from MS and 3rd party developers before I can fully see myself changing platforms. As good as the hardware and camera may be, my smartphone is my mobile computer replacement and the OS needs to be able to function like that.
Perhaps when RT merges with 8.1 and a few more MS and Nokia updates roll out it'll get more capable and phablet friendly. But until that time I'm keep jealously watching and admiring in awe at the camera and hardware but deep down knowing I just can't do what I want to do on it right now.
YMMV.
Good luck!
Something like Tasker or automatic volume adjustment will require homebrew, or at least an OEM app; third-party apps aren't allowed to run continuously in the background (it's bad for performance and battery life) on WP.

youtube no, because when you switch to start screen or other app automatically stop playing (but only tried in official YT app and SuperTube)
Here Drive will run fully in the background (battery warning: don't forget to stop it if you take a break somewhere short of your destination!) and will override other audio playback to give directions. Start Here Drive, enter directions and start navigation, then hit Start (or press-and-hold Back) and go to your media player app. You should continue getting turn-by-turn prompts. It doesn't actually pause the audio, which is annoying - you'll miss bits of songs or audiobooks, for example - but it works.
Hi,
I always use MortPlayer to hear my Music (because of Folders). And often I can control it with Media-Control-Widget on my GG.
But there are 2 things I really dislike. First one is that I have to Pause/Stop playing to see the Name of the Track. And the second one is that I not see how late it is because there is no watch on the widget. That sucks.
Because of this I have some questions:
1.) Is there an alternative for Original Media-Control-Widget?
2.) Could I directly start MortPlayer with Media-Control-Widget? What I have to do?
3.) Is there someone who could rewrite this App/Widget to show clock and Trackname and rearange the volume-Buttons. If it is possible
I don't know anything about Android developing.
Thx forward.

I don't have any suggestions but some comments on your post. When I go to Media Controller, within a milisecond, it displays the name of the track, without me touching any buttons.
Also, what do you mean how late? You want a clock on the Media Controller? Why? I put the shortcut for Swipe Down on clock to go to Media Controller. It's easy access to both.
Yeah, I don't have that problem either. Clock would be useful I guess
Here's something to try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2610167 (look at plugins available)
Well before GG I've got an Pebble Smartwatch, and on MediaControl the Trackname and the clock will always be shown. This was very useful, because sometimes the Track starts and after a short while I will see whats the Name of the Track. But then I have to stop and start it. This is isn't very good. And I think there is enough space to set the Volume-Buttons on other place to let Trackname and clock always stays on display.
But now after I've updated GearManager to newest version here in forum, MediaControl only starts Standard Music Player .
