I am wondering the pros and cons of using the version of cyanogenmod that runs from the sdcard vs the version that completely replaces the normal rom.
I suppose the sdcard version would be a lot simpler to keep updated with new versions and stuff.
I'm not planning on buying anything from B&N store on the nook, so I don't believe I need to keep the stock rom around for any reason. I just got my nook yesterday though, so I'm not sure if there is any other benefits to using the stock rom.
How is the performance of the SD card version? I would assume it boots slower than a native rom. And how is the normal performance after booting? Does anyone have any benchmarks on the differences?
Any other things I should consider?
Native install is much better, faster, more stable and easier to update.

I run one ROM on internal and have SD version as a backup and in case I break something.

Would be nice to see a BMM implementation on this device. I have 3 systems on my phone, and I love it.

HI,
A very quick summary to get you started:
The Nook color will boot first from a bootable external uSD card - so it can
be easier to 'try out' different ROMs without worrying about bricking the
device.
The internal flash memory is called 'emmc'.
You can root the stock ROMs, either the 1.01 or the 1.1 versions both are
based on Android 2.1, Eclair. You get Android market access this way and
can continue to use the stock Nook eBook app. There are rumors that
a version of Android 2.2, Froyo, with a B&N market is soon to be available.
Android 2.2, Froyo is available by ROM developers for installing on either
the internal memory or to run from external uSD cards. See for example
Nookie Froyo 6.8 in the developer section.
Android 2.3, GingerBread, is available as a pre-release from the
developers of CyanogenMOD ROMS, it is called CyanogenMOD7. They
release a new version almost every night, termed 'nightlies'. There is
a version for internal emmc or from someone else to run on uSD.
Current (3/23) versions have low frame rate hardware codec video
playback, but seem very stable otherwise. Phiremod makes a ROM
based on CM7.
Android 3.0, HoneyComb, has a very early release, based on
SDK version, not full source code.
To dual boot, see the thread in the developers section.
To overclock, see Dalingrin's kernels in the developer section.
To install new kernels and ROMs, see the ClockworkMOD (CWM) recovery thread
in the developer section.
Running a ROM from uSD can be as easy as downloading an image file,
on a PC, burning the image to uSD with "win32diskimager", then booting the
NC with the uSD inserted!
I am running CM7 nightlies and update when there are significant changes
or perhaps weekly - everything I have wanted to do has been working well.
Phiremod 5.1, based on CM7 is another good place to start.
As the NC has only one bottom button, you will also need some type
of on screen button system or button remapping to the volume buttons.
Most ROMs have something in them. I have liked Button Savior from the
market best.

So I bought my gf a nook. I am in a weird dilemma on what to install. She wants to do it on her own and finds the default OS on it boring. She needed a tablet. I installed Nookie Froyo which boots from the SD card. I think that may slow down the OS. So heres a quesition break down.
Whats the most reliable ROM? (I think FroYo will be a good OS choice)
What method should I use? Should I make her dual boot?
And anyone wanna warn me about some things?
Shes gonna be doing it all herself while I guide her. And I aint a newbie. Have an Archos 101 and I hang out in the Gen8 forums. Hi tho
Use CM7. It is the best rom out there by far.
If she doesn't like the stock rom then i wouldn't bother with a dual boot.

Someone else may be able to give you more information about the Froyo ROMs available for the nook color.. I personally don't have any experience with them so I can't really contrast the difference between it and the other AOSP ROMS available.
I've had the best experience with the CM7 Gingerbread Roms for the nook color. I'm currently running the 147 Nightly build and I've had no issues with it thus far.
The reason I decided on CM7 over the other available roms mainly stems from the community based around that rom for the nook color. They are actively putting out nightly builds with fixes every few days. As you can see by there nightly repo here http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly&device=encore CM7 is a very snappy rom with bluetooth support as well as usb device support in the works as well, I'd recommend you go with it.
As for method I personally just put it on the device itself. Running roms from a MicroSD card tends to be more of a hassle than its worth in my opinion. You've gotta make sure your MicroSD card has a high data rate or your system will be noticeably slowed down. The only time I'd recommend that is if you absolutely love the default nook interface. But from what you stated it seems like she doesn't even care for it.
I don't really have any warnings aside from following directions while rooting. Although if you've already rooted the stock rom via a MicroSD in CWR you can backup your stock, wipe cache/partition and install CM7 and gapps and be good to go. If you do go that route and install the rom to the nook itself make sure you update Rom Manager once your in CM7, you can then flash cwr to the nook so you don't have to have it on a MicroSD every time you want to update your rom.
CM7 it is. Thanks guys. Now I gotta make a step by step guide

I doubt she can wait lol
Thank you all for the answers. I got CM7 installed on it =]
Give miui a try, I ran the cm7 nightlies for a couple months and all in its a great rom after you make a few tweaks most importantly to me the LCD density.
Once I saw that miui was released for the nook color I tried it out and don't think ill go back to cm7. Its actually based off the cm7 nightlies but the whole ui is modified and think its alot easier to use for someone that is familiar with android a whole lot.
I could go on but do yourself a favor and give it a try.

I have tried almost every ROM for the NC. I would go with CM7, or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947071, which has been just as stable for me. If you like the Honeycomb interface, use that.
+1 for CM7... fan-freakin-tastic. Use the "Size-Agnostic..." steps to install to an SD card. There's another sticky for installing to emmc (internal memory). The SD path is nice because you can take the card out and reboot to stock, but I found emmc way more stable personally, plus you don't have to worry about having a bad sd card, etc.
CM7 for sure. Real nice, fast, and stable.
I personally use cm7, but you might want to try miui for her.

Without dragging this out too much, what are the specific benefits of miui. Or better yet, what does it give you that you cannot get with the regular CM7 and some tweaks?

It's a different design, very iOS-esque.
Like I said, I myself prefer CM7, but since you're setting it up for her I figured she might like somthing that's a little simpler.
Just try it, not like it's hard to flash a rom lol

Whats the best rom available right now for the N1? I haven't tested my N1 with anything in a while been running MIUI but I'm finding it to be sort of laggy now with apps installed.
Fastest? Hmm, pretty much any CM7 self-kang.
This one by samuaz is really fast: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416894
Is that the most stable rom available for nexus one right now?
with multiple full wipes to include system both are stable for me
with ICS by samuaz you need to follow op page exactly
Temaseks latest CM7 Kang with scroll zip is BLAZING
I use now ICS by samuaz, it's fast and really stable. But it's an alpha version!
When you think it's important to have a stable rom, then
use CM7. CM7 roms are as stable as stock, but better ;-)
worth upgrading to ICS or JB?
hello. I realize this thread hasn't been active in a while, but I am thinking to bring back my Nexus One from the grave so I can have a backup phone for my daughter to play with in the car/plane. I wanted to ask if it is worth installing ICS or JB ROMs that are out there. I just have the stock ROM in there now and I always struggled with low memory and lag with some newer apps, that's why I've upgraded phones (I've have a Galaxy Nexus now).
I don't have intentions to put a SIM card in there, so I don't really care about phone call features.. only purely from a processing and lightweight standpoint.
Has anybody played enough with GB vs ICS and/or JB and weighed if it's worth upgrading? I'm assuming that it's worth it because so many developers still have Nexus One ROMs... that's why I would just go ahead and install it, but then I'm thinking again if it's just going to bog down the phone if I'm going to only use it for simple games.
Thanks in advance!!
Ken
Hello! I have installed the CM10.1 VJ Jelly Bean 4.2.2 v6.0 that is based on CyanogenMod and Evervolv, and works fine for me. I also have installed all the /data partition in the SD card with the A2SD script that is incorporated in the ROM... it generates some few lags, but I didn't have had any problem of lack of space again.
In my opinion, this is the ROM of JB that best preserves the native Android interface, and in my case is stable (until 7 days without to require a reboot!).
Other JB ROMs that users frequently use are PARANOIDANDROID and PixelDroid.
Thanks for the quick response! That is the ROM I was thinking of as well. However, just as a comparison, I'm thinking to flash a clean version of GB back onto the phone as well. Any recommendations on any GB ROMs as well? Thanks!

Sorry, but I can't help on it. I didn't install any GB ROM further than the stock ROM. In my opinion, I think that a stable, complete and functional ROM might be CyanogenMod 7.2. Maybe other XDA members can help you better on it...

This is my main phone. In several times I though changing to other new Nexus device, but the screen size of new devices is too big for me! I like a screen size from 3.7 to 4.0, that is good to read mails, a brief navigation in the Internet, and other minor issues. For other intensive uses, I have my tablet Nexus 10 or my laptop.
At the moment, my nexus is running Cyanogenmod, although I am thinking about changing to a ICS rom, but I was thinking that they would have a lot of problems and not able for daily use, but after looking around, that has completely changed, now, here are some questions
Does ICS work faster than other type of roms like CM for example?
Using blackrose: Am I still safe to use this program even though I have a locked bootloader?

you can install wid locked bootloader. but you might loose recovery. so u might need to fastboot recovery
ICS for N1 is still in final stages of development(issues wid video recording & playback). it might not be as perfect as GB roms. but it will be cool.
u can give a try. and if not satisfied revert back to ur current rom

I was running BCM ICS CM9 for a while but found it to be a bit slow in comparison to GB roms. I ended up switching back to CM 7.2 once it reached a stable release since it has superior performance in my experience. The ICS development is coming along fantastically though and I expect to be switch back in the future; probably after a stable release is dropped. If performace is your highest concern I would recommend waiting, if you just want some ICS goodness then by all means you should switch.
In fairness, I'm using the original SD card that came with my N1. Considering all my apps were being run from the SD card, including system apps, it might not be a fair comparison. Perhaps upgrading the SD card would yield better results... I don't know.
I am running texasice ICS rom and even though there is some slight lag you can still run a fully functional (in my daily use) ICS rom. I guess it's a matter for you to try it and decide if you like it or not. If you backup your current rom switching from one to another is a matter of minutes.
Had my parents send me their hd+ so I could try and improve performance. I'm new to the nook and it's roms.Right now it's stock and it's weak.. laggy .. just plain poor in general. I'm confident in installing roms but there are quite a few ranging from 4.1 and up. I'd of course like a stock Android 4.x base. Are any of them rock solid stable? Of course I'd like to have 4.4 on it if it's at least pretty stable.. they will be using it mainly for internet cruising on wifi and that's about it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.. I plan on starting in a couple hours on the upgrade and it would be nice to have some direction on which rom to start with. thanks!

First check which emmc chip you got (download emmc brick check).
There is a possibility to brick your device with the MAG2GA chip and firmware 05 combination.
I'd recommend u the latest 10.2 nightly, it runs flawless and bugfree.
Some instructions:
Download these two for ur bootable SDcard cwm:
Win32DiskImager (tool for writing boot image to SD card)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager
NookHDplus-bootable-CWM-6028-for-stock-4GB-rev4-(05.15.13).zip (boot image for SD card)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613
Step to Step -> unzip the "NookHDplus-bootable-CWM-6028-for-stock-4GB-rev4.zip" -> write the image to your sd card with win32DisImager (try to take a 4 gig SDCard (worked best for me) and after that copy your wished rom and gapps onto the SD.
Now ur device should start in Recovery and u should be able to flash your new rom+gapps!

it's lacking many features and believe me you cant compare a fresh new build with one with much more time spend in.

I can certainly compare succulent's new build to other older builds. Just because it's newer and not as "established" doesn't matter. What matters is how well it works and it works perfectly for me. It may not have all the features CM10.2 has, but what I want in a rom is one that is smooth, stable, and bug free and it fits my needs perfectly. Back to the OP's question though, I think CM10.2 would probably be the best option for them since other people seem to be having some amount of difficulty with the 4.4 builds.
thanks for the reply's .. ended up throwing verygreen/cm11 on it.. didn't check emmc, got lucky I guess. Rom is fantastic.. haven't run into anything.. tested most things and it's running almost as silky smooth as my lg g2 with 4.4.
