Not really sure where to post this, so hopefully this is the right place.
So now that I have my Verizon Moto X rooted, I was hoping that the Wifi Tether apps would work. But unfortunately I can't seem to tether correctly because the system keeps checking my subscription status with Verizon and tells me "my order did not process successfully". I assume this is due to having a grandfathered unlimited data plan.
I was able to successfully tether using FoxFi before I was rooted, but I really hate being forced to use a PIN to unlock the phone because of the custom certificate.
On my Galaxy Nexus with the same plan, I had no problem tethering on custom roms. Is there a working app or exploit that can bypass the system check on the Moto X? Here are 2 screenshots I see whenever I try to tether.
Thanks :good:

Wireless Tether for Root Users.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=android.tether
I have used this for years on every android smartphone I have owned. Its a lifesaver. Quite often, a Verizon 4G LTE connection is a superior network connection for a laptop than any public / hotel WiFi that might happen to be around.

Doesn't work, tried it. I think I need to modify the entitlement check on the Moto X but don't think anyone has figured it out, yet.
Use the root, download an SQL editor and find setting storage database. Change line 65 to 0 and reboot. Viola, free tethering.

So I followed this step by step and am able to turn on tethering. However, my Nexus 7 tablet does not find the network at all. Tried this with several other Wifi tether apps, and the same thing happens. No obstruction from the subscription check, but no network found
Try rebooting your phone, and then verifying the instructions in the guide.
If you kept turning wifi tether on / off while you were testing earlier today and haven't rebooted yet, it is likely that the WiFi driver is in a glitched state.
BTW, the WiFi access point you will find with this is wlan0. This method seems to ignore SSID name settings. I would also recommend disabling encryption, just for testing purposes.
This isn't ideal, but considering how immature the Moto X rooting / tinkering efforts are thus far, it is "good enough" to get by until the knowledge base around this device matures.

Rebooted, verified instructions, and tested with a laptop and Nexus 7. Can't find the network with "Wifi Driver Reload 2". However, with "Wifi Driver Reload", a network appeared as "wlan0" (ignoring the SSID I specified) and I was able to connect without encryption. So I've made some progress, but I will need encryption to work.
Any thoughts?
That is as far as I have gotten too. Honestly, I am provably not going to invest any more time tinkering around with this, since it works and is "good enough" for now.
The long term solution will either for someone to tinker with WiFi Tether app enogmugh to find the exact settings for the Moto X, for the WiFi tether app developer to release an update that supports the Moto X, or for someone to figure out how to disable entitlement checking.
In the short-term, if you are concerned with having an open WiFi access point, you can always turn on Access Control setting to filter out by MAC address.
Again, not a perfect solution, since MAC addresses can be spoofed, and unencrypted data packets sent over WiFi can still be sniffed. But to be honest, I highly doubt that anyone is going to be going through all that trouble for a payload of data of unknown value to them.

The OP posted a solution using adb and then I also posted a method in teh thread using RootExplorer. If you haven't got it yet.
I am rooted and used TitaniumBackup to uninstall several Verizon apps, including the VZ Hotspot app. I'm now able to use the native tethering successfully. I'm pretty sure it's the Hotspot app that did it, but can't be certain. Can anyone else verify the Hotspot app removal is the key?

I didn't install any other software. After a reboot the vz hotspot app is still installed but disabled and tether still works. You do see the little popup message when enabling tether that credentials are being checked, but it allows you to tether. AFAIK disabling the following is all I did.
You most likely have tethering on your plan. Freezing the hotspot app will not get tethering to work the check is done in a whole different apk.

Pulled from the VZW Droid M entitlement check thread.
Therefore to help some out, buy SQLite (original RAZR and MAXX owners should be familiar with this) from the Play Store.
The path will be "data/user/0/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases"
So select data > user > 0 > com.motorola.android.providers.settings > databases > settings.db > settings
After selecting settings a list will pop up. You can do one of two things. Tap the magnifying glass and type "entitlement_check" and search for that, or scroll down to line 68 (yours may be a different line) and select it.
Tap the pencil icon.
You will see a new screen that has _id "auto", name "entitlement_check", and value "1". Change the "1" to a "0".
Hit save.

My contribution.
You can use the free version of aSQLite Manager, it won't access /data itself, but if you mount root read/write and copy the settings.db out to somewhere (I put it in Downloads). Edit the file according to the directions above, and then copy and paste it back into data. Enjoy your unlimited tethering without dropping $2.99 for an app. I'm still tempted to get either aSQLite Manager Premium or SQLite Editor to support the devs, but if I can do something for free I like to go that route first.
I performed this on a new Droid Max on Android 4.2.2.

Sadly, this doesn't work on the Moto X. There is no entitlement check in any database.
I have a work phone and I'm supposed to be able to tether. However I get that message saying that I have to call a phone. I talked with our telecom department and they said it should just work. So I'm confused why this is doing this.
I know I can root my phone, but I rather see if I can stay stock and get everything I want out of the phone.
This may be helpful to some.

**UPDATE** Great supplementary guide by Amil: http://www.amilkhanzada.com/2012/03/how-to-enable-select-network-on.html?m=1
Hello All! I'll get straight to the point.
I was playing around with some files, and noticed a bunch of configuration files in the '/system/etc/motorola/' directory. This directory is filled with custom setting that are applied after a factory reset. Here are some examples that I have played with:
File: /system/etc/motorola/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/settings.mkitso:
Setting: - Enable the 'Unknown sources' check box (Allows you to install non-market apps)
Code:
force_only_market_apps=0
File: /system/etc/motorola/com.motorola.blur.setup/defaults.xml
Setting: - Allow you the option of bypassing the Motoblur setup altogether
Code:
<boolean name='ShowSkipSetupMenu' value='true'/>
File: /system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone/defaults.xml
Setting: - Unlocks the mobile networks, 'Select network' and 'Operator selection
Code:
<boolean name='network_select_menu' value='true'/>

I have completed a test and can confirm that "Use Wireless Network" check box is "agps and wifi positioning" controlled with one check box. I would argue that the suggested modification to display the AGPS checkbox is legacy feature and unneccasary. Exposing both check boxes in the GUI will most likely get the files out of sync that these check boxes write to. You can confirm that the "Use Wireless Network" check box enables agps by using maps over cellular data (3G required) with GPS and wifi turned off. You'll notice that maps will find your location. This is agps. While we are on the subject, the menu option with the "2G check box", has been replaced with the 'Select network' menu with 2G/3G/Automatic.
I kind of wish that the original posts would be updated as people are being mislead in this thread. The AGPS configuration does not need to be modified. In this situation, the stock settings are already optimized for agps, wifi and gps as well as the optimal server.

Here are some other interesting setting that I haven't had a chance to play with yet:
File: /system/etc/motorola/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/settings.mkitso
Setting: - Unknown
Code:
dun_enable=1
Bluetooth_Dun_Enabled=true
Not sure what these do, but if you find out, please post it in this thread.
Thanks and I hope you all find these settings useful. Also, from my limited testing, the settings are only applied after a factor reset. This helpful for mod developers and those of use who that factory reset our devices often--the setting are automatically applied after a hard reset.

INCOMPLETE METHOD
Here is the complete method. I decided to post as I had some issues getting the described methods to work also.
Thanks to to mistadman and crnkoj and liranm2. My post is simply to join all of the items into a single method and provide information on what the resulting un-greyed settings do.
End result is that this method works flawlessly providing that all of the following steps are completed.
1) Edit the following files:
/system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone/defaults.xml
/data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs/settings.xml
/data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs/com.android.phone_preferences.xml
/data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs/_has_set_default_values.xml
Setting:
2) When I initially tested, I found that the files would revert to their original state after rebooting, but on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108181 member liranm2 states that YOU MUST DELETE THE BACKUP XML FILES THAT ROOT EXPLORER CREATES.
3) Reboot phone.
In summary, the above changes provide un-greyed options under Settings, Wireless & networks, Mobile networks as follows:
1) Select network
2) Operator selection
'Select network' provides the following options:
2G only = GSM only = lowest battery consumption, with slowest data speeds
3G only = WCDMA only = highest battery consumption, with fastest data speeds
Automatic = GMS auto (PRL) = medium battery consumption, with fastest data speeds when 3G towers are 'preferred' over 2G towers. This is based on what the towers advertise as being available. i.e. if a 2G tower has a stronger signal than another 2G/3G capable tower, then use 2G.
Automatic uses less juice becasue:
2G uses less juice
a stronger signal will yield lower transmit power consumption by the phone, i.e. don't force 3G if there is a stronger signal available at 2G.
'Operator selection':
Search networks = see all of the providers that your radio is compatible with, i.e. providers transmiting on frequencies your device supports.
Select automatically = will prompt every time your phone moves between different services that your provider offers that are not considered roaming.
On AT&T's network, using Any Cut to run Activity, GSM/UMTS Options provides a slight variation of the above menu. This can be used without modifying files. Instead we get a 'Use only 2G networks' check box which causes the phone to switch between GSM Only and GSM auto (PRL).
All of the methods described have the same result as dialing *#*#4636#*#*, then Phone Information, Set preferred network type. The acronyms shown on this menu most likely do not mean what you think they mean, hence the descriptions included in this post. Alternate method is to use Any Cut to run Activity and select Phone Information (thanks Vangelis13).
I'll post a link to this on the GingBlur thread to see if Ken will include these changes in his next version. My opinion is that having these settings would take the phone closer to a native build.
BTW Nice comments from crnkoj. Although I did not need to modify any settings.db files in any way, those files have some pretty interesting fields in them, just nothing that appears to be network_select_menu related.
Files listed below are for references purposes only. DO NOT MODIFY!!!
/data/data/com.andoird.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
/data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db

No this is not a sim unlock, it is supposed to allow you to select EDGE instead of HSPA+ however I was not able to get this to work after rebooting.

Unfortunately, you will have to perform a factory reset in order for the changes to apply. As I said before, this only works after a factory reset.

basically there are even more hacks possible in the subdirectories of the /system/etc/motorola/ directory. Thers one for sms delivery notification aswell, and the max allowed number of sent MMS/SMS at once (to different recipients), thers more things in there that i dont even know what the parameters mean. As for some of the hacks the values are being duplicated in /data/data/ and than com.each.particular.setting at first boot (ie when the phone is new, factory restored or sbf flashed) and is than maintained there, so even if you would change some of the settings in /system/etc/motorola/ it might not have an effect until you either factory restore (which is mega unconvenient) or go to the respective directory in /data/data/ and edit (mostly the files are saved in settings.db in those directories) the values in the settings.db there. by cleverly modifying those in the /data/data/bla bla and putting in read only tags into the settings.db you can in fact modify some things that are at times rather bothersome.

you dont have to factory restore it as a matter of fact. just go to:
/data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs edit this file: _has_set_default_values.xml which is a duplicate of the one from the /system (the defaults.xml) and write true in it, reboot and voila you have 2g/3g selector enabled.

Crnkoj, you are absolutely correct! However, making changes there will be lost after a factory reset. The beauty of modifying the configurations via the '/system/etc/motorola' directory is that the changes will become permanent.
So modifying both locations would probably be best for those who don't factory reset as much as I do Thanks for pointing this out crnkoj. I should have mentioned this in my original post.

You need to be rooted, than you can change these settings/databases to enable sideloading.
Hello, does anyone have an inkling whether I would be able to tether my unlimited data with Verizon with the Nexus 6 out of the box?
Or will I have to root the device...
No idea. But my guess is you'd have to root it.
On other phones, Verizon has software that checks your plan before you can enable native tethering. Usually, you have to root your device to disable it.
But since unlocked phones don't have that software installed, you shouldn't have to do anything.
AT&T blocked tethering with my unlimited data plan on any device purchased from them, but tethering worked out of the box on the Nexus 4 and 5.
Unless Google changed something to play nice with the carriers, you should be able to tether without rooting.

To some degree this is true, but also false.
Yes, with an unlocked device native tethering does not require root. However, with the Nexus 5, Google added into their Kitkat build.prop a tethering provision that would report tethering back to your carrier. Without editing the build.prop tether provision, you'd be charged for tethering unless your data plan allows it. In regards to my tmobile plan, I only had 3gb of tethering. Editing the build.prop tether provision allowed me to go beyond my 3gb hotspot allowance.

Thank you for letting me know about this! Somehow I never got flagged by AT&T for tethering, but maybe that was just luck.
Currently I'm using Verizon with an unlimited data plan, just like bonaina. If I understand you correctly, tethering with a Verizon unlimited data plan will "work" on the Nexus 6 out of the box — but unless you edit the tether provision, Verizon can see that you're tethering. In which case, they may choose to bump you up from the $30/month unlimited data plan to the $60/month unlimited data + hotspot plan. Does that sound about right? I say "may" because I've used a MiFi and USB modem with my Verizon SIM card numerous times, and they haven't changed my plan or even given me a warning. (Obviously they know I'm sharing data with those, because that's all those devices do.)
Nevertheless, it's probably best to play it safe and follow your advice. Does the build.prop tether provision edit work the same way in Lollipop?
I use FoxFi

4. Open "build.prop." It should give you the option to open in a text editor
5. Add "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" at the bottom - without quotations.
6. Reboot and enjoy
You're welcome to try the tethering apps in the Play Store, but I tried a bunch (including FoxFi) and nothing worked for me. You almost certainly need root access to activate the native tether function for Verizon. The feature to check with the carrier before activating a hotspot is native on Lollipop.
Matt
Edit: Tru does not equal true.
Does this method work for T-Mobile ?

That's because there's a typo. It should be:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Add it to the bottom of the file on a new line by itself.
Works fine for me on Verizon, and I have unlimited data without a tethering plan.
haha just tried it with it correct, and it works great on my unlimited plan too. thanks!
Sorry about that, that's a horrible place to make a typo.
is there a faster way to turn it on? like adding it to the main notification drop down?

once you turn on the wireless hotspot it should automatically populate a quick toggle in the notification drop down window.

Awesome!
Worked like a charm. Thanks for the info..... Seems crappy that we have to root our phones to use what we signed up for.
Has anyone come across a ROM that's dedicated to HotSpoting?
My thoughts are this:
1) Is there anything for this phone like a SafeStrap where you can change roms just by rebooting?
2) Could a rom be written to disable pretty much everything except hotspot (cannot receive text messages or phone calls, no apks are trying to use the internet in the background, etc...)?
I don't know how to make roms, so I am not going to say it sounds easy, but it does sound much simpler than a lot of the full OS roms I see.
Thanks guys!
I mean, there're 3G router for 30 dollars that can do that, and you want to use a fully featured phone that costs 150 USD$ o more for that?
Mmmmm.....

yeah but there's already ROMs that have the ability to do Wifi hotspot. so why wouldnt you just flash one of those and call it a day.
not like you're really going to see any better battery life by only having it as a hotspot. that **** kills the battery

My phone already does hotspot. I just changed permissions and have been good to go.
I can't get internet out at my house, so I use my phone's hotspot (and an antenna and amplifier I put together) so I can still game. When I get a phone call, or a picture message, it will lag like crazy, or dump my game.
This is why I would like a very simple ROM that would not allow for anything but a hotspot, or even just the ability to turn everything else off. I also noticed that if I can keep my unused RAM above 1gb, it hotspot's better.

I have looked into 3G routers, but then I'd have to pay for another phone line, and I'm not looking to do that. Then there's companies that sell internet service that is unlimited and 3G, but they are about a $500 start up fee, and about $125 a month after that. That is CRAZY!
Unless I've got it wrong, and I can somehow clone my SIM Card for the 3G router? I'm definitely no 3G router expert. Thoughts?
In that case, you can install Android Firewall and block everything except tethering and there's an app for blocking all calls. I think (my opinion) that's easier than a full hotspot rom having to switch back and forth. You can also make an script for enabling both or use tasker.

Yup, that's what I got. Also I got another apk that blocks startup apks (BootManager), and with both of them I got better signal.
Thanks for the help.
I have also noticed that my battery life has increased a lot. I was 40% more efficient since doing this yesterday, and about 40% more efficient this morning too. I'm assuming it's because of the BootManager.
Does anyone know the programs to allow through the firewall in order to get the hotspot to work?
I tried allowing everything (by clicking the check boxes) and that didn't work unless I clicked the box that says 'all apps'. I'm assuming what I need is not populating and so the only was to get it is to click 'all apps' which defeats the purpose. :-/
And does anyone know if the hotspot is a stand alone or if it uses other applications in order to work?
Thanks again!
If you go to settings, there's an option "Tethering support". You have to enable that in order to tether to works.
Just a thing: If you modify your traffic or DNS or whatever with another program (example, AdFree that blocks ads) the adds will be blocked also to anyone that connects to the hotspot.

I didn't find a 'settings' on it or a 'Tethering Support'. I only see when hitting menu: Firewall Disabled/Enabled, Log Disabled/Enabled, Save Rules, Exit, Help, and More.
Then under 'More', I see: Show Log, Show Rules, Clear Log, Set Password, Set Custom Script.
There is also the Mode in the top left that lets me do White/Black list.
I would love to go into 'Tethering Support if you can guide me there!
I don't know if we are seeing the same app but this one has that option

Droidwall hasn't been updated in ages and doesn't have toggles for tethering.
I use AFWall+, which built off the concept of Droidwall. It has an entry you can whitelist for Tether & DNS.

Ahhh. Yeah, this program looks much much better. I'm out for work all week, but when I get back home this weekend, I'll give it a try.
Thanks for the help!
EDIT: I don't have tethering in the options like you, but it's just another application on the list so I checked it. Is there anything else I need to check to make it only hotspot? Like the phone and text one, or the DLNA?
I tried the old Lollipop trick - using an sql editor to dig in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/
Now, when I looked in that directory, it was empty. Looks like they moved those settings elsewhere to try to force more people to pay carrier tethering extortion fees.
Anyone know how to get a Marshmallow Nexus 6 to tether? Without paying? Hold the sanctimonious lectures.
yes, i tether every day, no issues. but my tmobile plan includes 7gb tethering. if you want to tether illegally, go back to lolipop. oh, btw, i dont have to pay for tethering, as tmobile lets me tether enough, legally.
What's illegal about tethering? The FCC already told Verizon that tethering was not illegal, nor is it theft. Contrary to popular belief, I too pay my phone bill. What's so magical about tethered bits that makes them such a burden on the carriers compared to non-tethered bits?

its legal unless you have unlimited data. then its legal for the providers to put limits on tethering. tmobile offers all their limited plans unlimited tethering, but their completely unlimited data plans get only 7gb tethering. why only 7gb? because its meant for your mobile devices, not to add data to your home internet. read the law, understand it, instead of just listening to what others are saying. magical, nothing. but those that are tethering for their home internet are ruining the services for others. anyways, im not innocent, but i actually know what the law says. and it is stealing.
I'm on jdx 4.0 on cricket. I tether no problem and cricket says you can't tether.
I tried editing build.prop and changing apn to ipv4 but no luck... Not sure if I was doing it right, I used to do the database edit with sql editor. Can anyone post what needs to be changed/added?
as long as your carrier allows it, Use Root Browser to edit build.prop open with RB Text Editor and add net.tethering.noprovisioning=true at the bottom. Save reboot

you need to set SElinux to be permissive in marshmellow to edit system files. many dont know this, since their custom kernels have it set to permissive already. but you can get an app(not at the play store) or set it via terminal emulator.

i posted a link to a SElinux app in this thread.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/issues-editing-build-prop-marshmallow-t3222551
I edited build.prop in recovery and can tether fine.
Sent from my Nexus 6
Works fine on LightRom with T-Mobile for me.
After I edit build.prob and reboot, my tablet will connect to the hotspot, but it had the exclamation over the WiFi icon and won't connect to anything. Any ideas?

I just received my Note 9 and have been playing around with things. After doing a little research and piecing together a couple of different posts, I can confirm that I have Sprint Hotspot working. The steps are as follows:
1. Download Shortcut Master Lite from the Play Store.
2. Open Dialer
3. Dial ##brand# (##27263#)
4. Say yes/accept everything - phone reboots
5. Open Shortcut Master Lite and select the Menu (three vertical dots in the upper right).
6. Select App Explorer, and then All Apps
7. Navigate (scroll down) to com.test.LTEfunctionality and select.
8. Select the first item labled "LTEFunctionalityTest" and select launch.
9. Scroll down to LTE APN Setting and select.
10. Select APN2 LTE/EHRPD internet
11. Scroll down to APN type and select.
12. Add "DUN" to the setting (it should read "default, mms,DUN") without quotations. Also make sure there is no space between the comma and DUN.
13. Select Menu and save your settings
14. Reboot
Congratulations, your device now has Sprint Native Hotspot!
Update : You must reapply if you update profile!
Disable automatic updates so that profile updates do not remove!

Nope, I have the Sprint version. Ordered directly through Sprint
Didnt work for me. Anything else you tried that might of made it worked for you?
edit: wth? So earlier I was messing with another method through adb shell and I was afraid maybe I had messed something up so I wanted to undo it all. The guide said to use this commands
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_required 1
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_apn null
then I removed the DUN from apn setting on shortcut master and now the hotspot works? makes no sense but I'll take it lol
Edit 2: Apparently my plan comes with 10gb of hotspot which is why it was working after removing all custom settings. I just went past the 10gb and it has now slowed down to 2g speeds (text from sprint)

If you believe this worked for you, check your sprint account usage because I'm pretty sure all new sprint unlimited plans come with 10gb hotspot so you might be using that up thinking this worked. That's what happened to me lol

Worked perfect for me. Older plan and do not pay for hotspot.
So it seems to only work for people with no hotspot plan then. Can any of you guys with it working enable it and then dial ##33284# and look under active apn connections and see what comes up? You should hide your ip tho if you post a screenshot. Mainly looking at what is under Active APN 1 and 2

With mine turned on and my laptop connected it says "There are no Active APN Connections"
I've been messing around with this for the last couple of days and I figured I would post here everything I have tried and my findings in case someone with more knoledge in this wants to try and figure out a working fix
I had an s8+ previous to this note 9 that had hotspot enable by this two adb shell commands
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_apn "APNDUN,n.ispsn,,,,,,http://mms.sprintpcs.com,68.28.31.7,80,310,120,,default,dun,mms,supl"
while the hotspot is on, I dialed ##DEBUG# and can see TWO separate active APN connections to n.ispsn and I have internet on my phone and my laptop that is connected to the hotspot.
Now on the note 9, I tried those exact commands and got "couldn't connect to APN" followed by hotspot not enabled in account. Looking a bit closer I noticed that through Shortcut Master edit thing, the note 9 only has one APN instead of the two that all other galaxy phones have had to this point. Instead of
Code:
APN2 LTE Internet
&
Code:
APN2 EHRPD Internet
there is now only one called
Code:
APN2 LTE|EHRPD Internet
. This also has x.ispsn instead of n.ispsn like on the previous galaxy devices so it seem the are now using Sprints new APN. I swapped those in the command above and entered this on adb shell
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_apn "APNDUN,x.ispsn,,,,,,http://mms.sprintpcs.com,68.28.31.7,80,310,120,,default,dun,mms,supl"
This allowed me to enable hotspot but after connecting my laptop to it I got no internet. I checked again under ##DEBUG# and Active APN Connections shows just one Active APN to x.ispns. I tried different ways of enabling the hotspot including date off->hotspot on->data on. data off->hotspot on->connect laptop->data on. But still no internet. It seems that the hotspot is not setting up a connection to the APN x.ispns at all which is why I get no internet.
In the mean time, the app EasyTether Pro does work to set up a wired connection to a PC so that's what I'll be using until a fix is found for this. Sorry for long post lol

I am sorry you are having so many problems. Are you on an unlocked version? Mine is Sprint branded bought directly from Sprint. This may be the difference. I came over from the Pixel XL and the steps there involved editing the build.prop file and an ADB command similar to your steps.

Yeah so is mine. I can't think of why it would work with someone but not others. Can you check on shortcut master again to see if you have n.ispsns or x.ispns. Also what plan do you have with sprint
